Re: (313) DEMF Schedule Released!!!
Well, to my mind it's a no brainer -- Inner City will be meh, Derrick May plays everywhere all the time. Robert Hood is a monster, not to be missed. You know how every DJ that plays banging minimal techno sounds the same? Robert Hood doesn't. His sets are hard as nails, and always exciting. I've seen DJ Bone and T1000 be excellent playing hard and fast, but Hood is unique. i agree with our man Kent here, it makes my decision a lot either, no sophie's choice during the first night. Mr. Hood all the way, I was kinda hoping the new album would be available by this weekend, but I may be getting ahead of myself. jw On Mon, May 24, 2010 at 10:03 AM, kent williams chaircrus...@gmail.com wrote: Well, to my mind it's a no brainer -- Inner City will be meh, Derrick May plays everywhere all the time. Plus Hood is billed as 'live' which make it a pretty rare performance. Hopefully it is 'live live' and not DJing with efx, like some of his other 'live' billings have been. Re: (313) DEMF Schedule Released!!!
Inner City's performance may be only so-so, but I would still like to hear them live. Given that their sound is from a different era, it will likely be a welcome stylistic change in music. Derrick May may play everywhere all the time, but he never plays near where I live so it would be silly to miss the opportunity to hear him again. He's always played well and interestingly when I've heard him so I see no reason to skip him altogether. That said, I love Hood to bits!!! Granted, I was truly disappointed with his amazingly lackluster set the last time he played the main stage at DEMF, but I can forgive him since I've heard him play enough times to know that he can send me into orbit in a way that very few DJs can, especially when he plays in smaller venues. The fact that he'll be playing live makes me super curious. Changes are opt for May and Hood and pop into Inner City occasionally I hate having to float from stage to stage, but sometimes it can't be helped. {}0+| On 5/24/2010 10:03 AM, kent williams wrote: Well, to my mind it's a no brainer -- Inner City will be meh, Derrick May plays everywhere all the time. Derrick is 9-11, not 9-10. That means that both Hood and Inner City will be performing during his set. I would rather not have to interrupt listening to Derrick's set to hear the other performers, but I also don't want to miss Hood or Inner City. That's the prob. Honestly, if it were the only thing going on, I'd love May, but he's going to be playing records (and likely the big room tracks most 313'ers don't care about), but Hood live will melt your face off and then rush your t*ts off. Just to chime in - Inner City were billed to play here in Glasgow a couple of months ago and a couple of people who's opinion I trust went along and said it was...more than a little dissapointing to be generous about it. RE: (313) DEMF prediction
I bought an online copy of that track. I don't know what the fuss is all about. To me it seems just like an old fashioned, run-of-the-mill [and off the conveyor belt] 'minimal' thing. It's got interesting effects but tbe sounds are flat, cold and tinny, and the whole thing is s quite soul-less and meaningless, even in our world of dance music, in which the 'meaning' of music is opaque [at best]. If that becomes a DEMF anthem I will make a rubbish track myself and make it available for free so that *I* can have the next DEMF 'anfem'. The only thing interesting about it is the moniker of the artist, in my view. I am not saying anyone claimed it was good. Merely giving my own couple of cents worth. One DEMF tip for all -- if you're in one spot and you're enjoying it, don't be tempted to try a different stage because it might be better! You end up spending the whole weekend walking between stages, and you still miss the good stuff. It's like traveling in Europe -- do you want to see places, or train stations? All true but when I did see KMS in Europe (at Berghain in December 2008, following an off-the-hook live set by Octave One), he stayed away from the anthems and played deep and well. Wish I could have the dilemma of the DEMF schedule, but I can't be there this year. In a way I don't mind taking a break but the best part of the festival is seeing all of you plus the rest of my extended Detroit family... fh - I've no doubt that Kevin Saunderson will show up to be on main stage for this, and who knows, maybe they've worked up something live-ish (or Live-ish perhaps) to perform, but I can't get that worked up about missing this. The last time I saw Saunderson at DEMF he played a pretty generic big room hands in the air set*, with a few cheesy prog-house tracks in the mix. I'm more of a small room, sweat on the walls kind of person, so it did nothing for me. Nothing would please me more than to hear afterwards DUDE, It was AMAZING! but my hopes aren't high. *this is a real problem, especially in Europe, where they still have big room events. There's a certain kind of least common denominator set that gets a big reaction from a large crowd of pilled-up punters. So the DJs that play out 2 or 3 times a week all the time tend to streamline their sets to What Always Works. And just as all cars optimized for drag coefficient will tend to look the same, all perfected Big Room DJ sets will look the same. That's fine if you want the biggest reaction from a big crowd, but it's generic and uninspiring to anyone who actually cares about the music. It means that Richie Hawtin, Sven Vath, Kevin Saunderson, Benny Benassi, Carl Cox, etc all sound the same. RE: (313) DEMF prediction
You're wrong. It's amazing. Not very minimal either. And it has a melody! Which is why people might think it could be a big tune at DEMF I suppose. (313) Oni Ayhun OAR003
Since people are debating this record, and not everyone's heard it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpUdR4HZ6Bw Oar003-A http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3grTvaQ8pAM Oar003-B A side sound like the guy has been listening to Carl Craig (or maybe Sierra Romeo or East Island -- it has a very Eevolute sound to it). B side starts out like a dubbed out version of the A side, I'd be more likely to play this. It's pretty much irresistable -- like the man knows his UR catalog well -- stonking beat and nice melodic material that builds over time.
Re: (313) Oni Ayhun OAR003
I quite like it (the B, A didn't grab me at all). Reminds me of Four Tet and Caribou of other sounds around at the moment. robin... FWIW, I was speaking of the B side when I mentioned my DEMF prediction. I will be shocked and amazed if I don't hear it at least once. That melody is irresistible!!! (313) OT: DEMF Friday airport pickup/cab share?
So my flight to Detroit gets in on friday at 11:30-noonish. Unfortunately the rest of my crew won't be in town until 2 or 3. I am trying to find somebody with a similar or slightly later flight who wants to share a cab to downtown Detroit. Alternately, looking for somebody w a car to pick me up at the airport. Staying at the shorecrest but getting me close or even to Detroit threads or melodies and memories would work too. Sent from my iPhone
