Re: New subscribers?

2018-10-24 Thread Suzanne Heinrichs
Hi there-
I've been lurking since the beginning of 313 (Morgan Geist's first post maybe?)

I love Detroit techno (and Detroit). I have a show on
intergalactic.fm's Dream Machine that usually features a track or two
from a Detroit artist. (I even got to check out the Packard Plant the
first time I went there in 1994!)

In my opinion, Drexciya and Detroit Escalator Co. made some of the
most beautiful music ever.

Love reading all your posts, and I'm super happy people are posting again.

So good, thanks for tip! Didn't come up on my bandcamp feed because I
follow the other account.

Was sorry to hear about the issues with Peacefrog but hopefully that has
been resolved now.

and as for me being mad, or offended.

hm how do I say this. First pardon my crassness:

When as a black man in america, has getting mad about how two allies
perceived a beef/misunderstanding about some black shit between themselves
ever done anything for me...ever.

When I see Denise or Joe in whatever capacity in the near or distant
future. I'll dap em up.

The end.

Denise, Moxie is RA's go-to-person to narrate their docs. Yes, it would
have been better if they had used a Detroit native and artist, but there
are a myriad of reasons why that isn't the case, none of which I would say
are racist. The most obvious one is that they probably never thought of it.
It is a great idea and it's a pity - Stingray would have been perfect -
that it didn't happen, as it would add extra legitimacy to the project. And
if you mentioned it to RA heads, they would probably kick themselves for
 not doing it.

I can actually ask someone if you want, who is an employee at RA, if
 they had actually considered this.

 - Instead of being pumped that a documentary like this was released and

Resident Advisor didn't credit Andrew Duke when they first posted the

putting. They're using the voice of the colonizer to tell the story of
brilliant, musical escape from enslavement and forced labor. Escape from
 the colonizer.

Oh here goes Denise, making everything about race. But this actually
all the way super duper is all about race and racism.

And how much electronic music culture coverage is based in europe, the
birthplace of imperialism and colonialism? A lot.

Music fans and writers should be more concerned about preserving and
protecting and respecting the culture that made this music.

Why didn't they ask Cornelius Harris to narrate? Why didn't they ask
John Collins to narrate? That would be meaningful to artists and fans
 alike.

Re: Why Drexciya Took Detroit Electro Underwater

2018-10-24 Thread Aidan O'Doherty
Ladies and gentlemen, we've only got the band back together and already
we're squabbling worse than Fleetwood Mac

Denise, Moxie is RA's go-to-person to narrate their docs. Yes, it would
have been better if they had used a Detroit native and artist, but there
are a myriad of reasons why that isn't the case, none of which I would say
are racist. The most obvious one is that they probably never thought of it.
It is a great idea and it's a pity - Stingray would have been perfect -
that it didn't happen, as it would add extra legitimacy to the project. And
if you mentioned it to RA heads, they would probably kick themselves for
not doing it.

I can actually ask someone if you want, who is an employee at RA, if they
had actually considered this.

Thanks,
Aidan

Name one who was fucking offended by the video??

Go ahead, I’ll wait...

Your ignorance is truly astonishing.

That video was dope, informative and above all RESPECTFUL.

I suppose my “way of thinking” hasn’t caught up to me yet because I’m still
tight with my D peeps. I put out records with and stay at Wilhite’s place
when in town, Atkins would stay at my house back in the day when I’d bring
him out to LA and Kenny personally walked me into Soul Skate last Movement
weekend.

For some reason they don’t give a fuck about all this but YOU do.

The only thing that comes close is my man Mike Grant taking issue with
white European artists using black artwork and artist names on their
releases. I think we can all agree that sucks.

“The paradox of black cultural movements -- Techno, Hip Hop, Jazz, Blues etc --
is that it is dependent on the majority culture -- i.e. mostly white -- to
support it, because they are the ones with the numbers money. Remaining true
to that culture without diluting it is always a challenge, among all the other
challenges to being an artist.”

Artists can bow down to the white dollar or make revolutionary art, huh. Kenny
Dixon seems to do both.

White people are on our way out as a majority. So your old ways of thinking
won’t hold true in even five years, and they don’t hold true for many people

Are we doing interdictions?  If so;

Greetings. My name is Joe Marougi and my artist name is Joe Babylon.

I founded the Plug Research label back in 1994 with my friend and dj
partner Allen Avanessian.

I used to hire Detroit artists to play at parties in Los Angeles back in
the mid 90’s as an attempt to create more awareness for the sound (plus I
was a big fan so I enjoyed it).

I started another (vinyl) label in 2010 called Roundabout Sounds and have
put out releases/tracks/remixes with the likes of Wilhite, Wade, Huck,
Grant and the last ever track from Aaron-Carl.

“I’m very happy to be here!” (said in Prince Akeem’s voice)

Re: Why Drexciya Took Detroit Electro Underwater

2018-10-24 Thread Joe Marougi
Wow Denise you must really be fun at parties. What the hell are you
talking about?

That was an amazing video tribute to Drexciya and the “oppressive white
woman” was blowing them the whole time with mad props!?

Maybe you’re forgetting a few things:

- RA (or no one at all for that matter) are OBLIGATED to do anything in a
certain way. Their money, their resources, their business. As long as it
was done with integrity and factual etc then there shouldn’t be a problem
with it.

- Apparenly they felt that the woman had the voice they wanted to lead the
video. Umm, let’s see...maybe because the fucking AUDIENCE they target
look and sound like her?? And again, it’s their dime not yours or mine.

- Instead of being pumped that a documentary like this was released and
hopefully generated some more awareness for very well-deserved artists you
have to come in with your miserable take and try to shit on it.

- You’re the only racist here by saying that a white person can’t make
something about black people, especially when it’s geared towards MORE
white people (their audience).

- For fucks sake, this was a totally positive project and you’re trying to
make them out to be slave owners. Are you jelly that you didn’t make it??

The only thing that sucks is if they used my man Andrew’s interview without
asking him, but that’s far from any sort of racial bias or angle.

That’s like someone starving being given food then complaining it isn’t
filet mignon.

Pathetic.

Re: New subscribers?

2018-10-24 Thread kent williams
I don't think that the answer to the questions Denise raised is feeling bad
about being white. My own answer is to try and be conscious about how
being a white person (in the US or Germany or wherever) means that you
don't experience what people of color (and minority cultures/communities in
general) live with, day to day. Being a good ally (and this goes for men
with respect to women, LGBTQIA+ as well) means listening, not centering
yourself in the discourse, and above all, not being a schmuck.

The vitality of Detroit Techno (and this is also true of Jazz and Blues,
also original art forms that originated with people of color) is that even
as a music by and for black people, it is about an inclusive world, a
vision of what the world could be. Personally, as a big dumb white guy, I
have always cherished the welcome I've gotten in Detroit. Techno comes
from people of color, and there's a whole political and cultural context
for it, but it has never been exclusionary. The strong connection between
musicians in Detroit and Berlin is an example of how this works. And even
the most Afrocentric people in techno, like Underground Resistance, has
never been about excluding white people. Mad Mike is famous for taking
visitors from overseas and giving them the full Detroit Pride tour.

As for a white woman narrating the Drexciya video, that's pretty far down
my list of what's problematic about it. For better or (often) worse, RA is
a bunch of white people selling dance music to white people. That is the
context of that narrator's voice.

The paradox of black cultural movements -- Techno, Hip Hop, Jazz, Blues etc
-- is that it is dependent on the majority culture -- i.e. mostly white --
to support it, because they are the ones with the numbers money. Remaining
true to that culture without diluting it is always a challenge, among all
the other challenges to being an artist.

And by blathering on in this forum, perhaps I'm violating my own
prescription by centering myself. So now I'll shut up.

Hello everyone - my name is Jason, I'm from Glasgow and I've been on the
list since the 1990's (can't remember exactly when)

I produce music mostly under my own name and run a label focussing on
Glasgow based artists called Iridite - www.iridite.com

I also run a small store called Signal Sounds that concentrates on
electronic music production and Modular/Boutique synths in general
(Denisehit me up if you're even in Glasgow!!) - www.signalsounds.com

I still buy music but my available time to listen to is as close to zero as
makes no difference but I still love getting the odd recommendation from
here and I follow Kent's Bandcamp recommendations eagerly :)

cheers

Re: New subscribers?

2018-10-24 Thread denisedalphond
It’s healthy to question our perspectives and good to acknowledge the ways that
people with white skin do not suffer. Even if it feels awkward or uncomfortable
sometimes, it’s that way for everyone, and it’s better than ignoring other
peoples’ experiences.

And we as techno fans have the luxury of answering to the great city of
Detroit. Michigan is a racist place. So I think, what do my music idols
experience at the grocery store or at the airport or the bank or from cops,
probably some bullshit from white people that look like me. And then I get
really embarrassed.

And pissed off. And then I think of creative ways to fight back.

You don’t have to do that as a techno fan, but you can. It’s an option. And
it’s fun.

Hello new'- and old'sters.

Was just wondering if I ever „properly" introduced myself here. Apart from „Hi,
I’m Ronny. I like Techno.“

The recent Drexciya thread, articles and thoughts made me think. You know, I’m
a caucasian, born and raised around Hamburg/Germany. Hence my personal
experience of being a victim of racism is about zero. Then again, being a
german, you’ve got to reflect about these things. Imho.

Crap, this is awkward. I have no concept about what it feels like to be
historically oppressed because of the color of skin. Neither was I raised in
economical circumstances as close as those found in Detroit. The weight or
burden of that combination I can at best try to imagine or feel. This is a
tough topic for a cultural ‚bystander‘ wanting to approach it in the most
respectful way possible.

What I do have a personal experience with:
Living with Angst or anxiety if you will. Being risen to function, showing good
manners on the surface. Avoid looking inside by any means. Getting a good whack
of post-WW2 parenting.

For long I thought Techno mainly appealed to me because my parents didn’t get
it. But that’s not an emotional response, right. What I found in Techno was a
strong sense of place. Where I was allowed to breathe, think and feel. True
freedom.

So, I’m aware that if I say „I kinda get it“ it’s still lacking cultural
background. Yet, where can one draw a line? And can anyone relate at all?
