RE: [313] This Is How You Get To Be The #1 Club In America...
Well said D. Motor is a business, not a non-profit organization to save techno. When they pay out 10 grand to bring in a big name techno DJ and the club is half empty they eat it HARD. The bottom line is trance/progressive/whatever is big right now in clubs and despite the fact I think it is garbage, the kids who do listen to it love it and are willing to pay to go see it. This event will attract all sorts of people and make some money for the club which is always a good thing. I have no problem having DRQ people there on Saturdays if it helps pay the bills and get the people I do want to see (even if it is once a month). The reality of the club scene in Detroit is that is not easy to make money and keep places open. Look at Temple in Ferndale which went down in flames in record time (i shudder every time I see that EAW system there collecting dust). Dan is a bright person and is fully capably of running his club anyway he sees fit to stay open and he definitely knows the difference between a night for the kids and a night for the adults. -Original Message- From: diana potts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, February 28, 2002 8:02 PM To: (Truth Be Told); 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] This Is How You Get To Be The #1 Club In America... oh...what the heck... I don't understand why everyone is so surprised to see Motor behind this. Someone mentioned that Motor brings in diverse acts and used the example of booking such acts as Matthew Herbert. Ummm..do you think that just because Herbert is a bit more indie-techno he doesn't cost some MUUULA? PLUS Where ELSE is there to play in Detroit?? There's that hole St.Andrews with the shite sound, or the State Theater (that's as intimate as a football game) or the Detroit Contemp (yeah-sure, that can be afforded) Sure, acts like this might not cause major attendance-but acts still cost MONEY and motor's claw they've clenched into the city makes it VERY difficult for other venues and promoters of quality personality and good intentions (yes an oximoron, but possible) to survive. Motor may loose money on nights like that, but i'm sure they'll be fine. There are just some times when you have to let the silver shirted scary people have the batcave (err..i mean motor). Which is most of the time. (here is where I'll refrain from my speech of the good nights at Motor or how it USED to be) I often refer to Motor as the batcave because it's dark, often scary and holds truths we're probably better off not knowing. --- "(Truth Be Told)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Motor Productions presents- > > DELTA HEAVY > > Sasha & Digweed on tour > > wsg: Jimmy Van M. > > > Truth > > I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it for > myself... > > > _ > Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN > Hotmail. > http://www.hotmail.com > > > - > To unsubscribe, e-mail: > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > For additional commands, e-mail: > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > __ Do You Yahoo!? RE: [313] how was kooky at motor?
Off the hook. D records definitely has the skills to do things the right. Music was exceptional with Rex kicking it off with a set of tight, pumping techno. Having the lights turned off ala Cheshire was a nice touch. Fred went on a little past midnight and rocked the place (of course). Tom cleaned up with a particularly dark and brutal set that kept the place bumping till close. I think what really made the night was the people who brought the right vibe. A lot of faces from the past were there and an overall happy crowd. Any D Records/Paxahau event is not to miss. -r -Original Message- From: jenn without the -ifer [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2002 6:33 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] how was kooky at motor? i went there around midnight and there was a huge line that i didn't want to wait in so i didn't go in. how was it? --jenn without the -ifer - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: [313] Re: DEMF 2002: The Sexy Adventures of Carol Marvin313
Oh, they should not be on the logistics end of it. When I say promoters get involved, I mean from a creative angle. Obviously the reason PMC is in on all of this is they know how to handle an event this size. But of course just because an event is big does not mean it is any good. Incorporating some of the aspects of the Detroit scene on an event this size would definitely be something best handled by people who have done it first hand. A lot of the people involved throwing events here work their brains out on those events and I have no doubt would do the same given the opportunity to "do it right". And yes I know several promoters who have worked on and are qualified to work on "concert festival" size events. -Original Message- From: Dan Sicko [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2002 2:40 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [313] Re: DEMF 2002: The Sexy Adventures of Carol Marvin313 Heh. Well, I was kind of joking about DJ worship, but what I was really hinting at is that techno, house, electronic music, what have you ... are in an entirely different context at an event like DEMF. It's not a club, not an outdoor "rave," ... it's a concert festival. RE: [313] Re: DEMF 2002: The Sexy Adventures of Carol Marvin313
Thats my point though.. Carl is not a promoter and is not as qualified as the people who have been throwing parties here for years. I'm sure PMC has thrown large, successful events but I thought that this particular event (DEMF) is supposed to be a reflection of what is at the core of dance music in Detroit and I KNOW that PMC knows absolutely nothing about that. World party (a large party that was held at Cobo Arena in '93 or '94 for those who don't know) was a bomb and illustrates that corporate entities can not cater to the tastes of people they do not understand (or have a just have a rudimentary understanding of). The new board is definitely a step in the right direction but IMHO if the festival is to be to its full potential it should be a joint effort by everyone who has worked for and made Detroit what it is today. PMC obviously understands this by choosing people entrenched in the Detroit dance culture but the scene here always went beyond the DJ's and producers. I have no doubt that if PMC was going to run the show on their own they would simply look up the "Top DJs" list in Spin magazine and book accordingly, and I am sure this is not what we want. My hope is that this years festival will give people a real understanding of what this city means to us and not just the glimpses they get by seeing Detroit DJ's or in the press. This is my interpretation of what Carl wanted to do in the first place and why the first year was such a success. -raph -Original Message- From: glyph1001 [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2002 1:03 PM Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] Re: DEMF 2002: The Sexy Adventures of Carol Marvin313 I'll even say further that Pop Culture themselves has experience in organizing (or have been involved in) huge events and festivals in the past (i.e. as far as I know, the 'World Party' and the Jazz Festival) so that's the 'promoter' component there. As if Carl had previous experience in putting together a huge festival on his own. To be quite frank, it seems to me alot of 'buddies' were picked to play the last two years. Flame, flame, --G. RE: [313] DEMF 2002: The Sexy Adventures of Carol Marvin
Heres my $0.02. If you read the link to the various reactions you will see that Kevin Saunderson makes a very legitimate point: No promoters. I have always been weary of having a DJ/producer book the event and was hoping that Carol would do the right thing and bring in people who are qualified to put this together. I can think of at least a half dozen people who have worked their brains out in Detroit over the last 10 years who have every right to be on the panel. Having an all musician panel could be more about personal tastes of the artists than the event as a whole. I guess we will have to see the lineup and whether or not Carol will give the panel the freedom it needs to save some face this year. RE: [313] Motor Rumors
Ok, let me quell some rumors. Seeing that my room mate (the hostess with the mostess..) works at motor I can say that motor moving is a rumor PERIOD and last time i looked (which was friday) Dan still owned the place. I am sure if they were going to move they would announce it and if they did have secret plans that no one knew about I am sure they would not have dropped 10 grand into redecorating the place last month. BTW, to answer someone's question about new years in Detroit bars: from my understanding, bars can stay open on NYE until 4am. Other than NYE, bars can stay open till 4 am in Detroit if they have a kitchen but (obviously) can only serve till 2. They are several places that use this loop hole, such as space {dryheave}, but I don't know if this is true in Hamtramck (were motor is). Also, regarding the police: Hamtramck is so broke that they can hardly afford police atm (they are in the process of deciding if they want to dissolve the police dept in the city and hire wayne county sheriffs instead) so seeing more than one patrol car in one place at the same time usually mandates a large explosion or dead bodies. I have been going there about every weekend for the last 8 months and never saw any cops waiting for people outside. On a side note, Hamtramck is WAY sketchy so if you are going to park far from the club do yourself a favor and dont walk alone, it seems that anytime anything happens within 15 blocks of the motor the club is blamed for it. r- -Original Message- From: Rob Theakston [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2001 8:56 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [313] Motor Rumors i don't know about the moose lodge rumors. but i know that dan sordyl is still owner of motor. kip winger is selling his pants on ebay. how nice: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1487496065 -Original Message- From: Paul Jenvey [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2001 8:44 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] Motor Rumors Quoting now-- Motor is surrounded by a residential neighborhood so it makes it very hard to stay open past 2am.
