(but it is just as bad in the origianl notes as in the transcript, I'm afraid) The point is whether we really think Jeff is adding a great deal to the history of Western philosophy with all this? Of course the validity of temporality (or not), the beauty of the oppressed and rejected are noble topics and further, this is not to suggest there's some sort of elitism about who can make a point or write anything on a particular subject ... but at the end of the day (upon which a dog will have his) facile, primary school sentiments are easily recognisable as just that. If you buy CDs to be touched deep down inside by the liner notes, you will most likely be disappointed. if you want to read about time and space, get a book by carl sagan or stephen hawking. turn to mills when you want hard techno. I personally think mills is being a bullshit artist because his writings sound a lot like your average guy trying to project intelligence through abstract CD liner rantings. dont get me wrong, he can write whatever he wants on cds and records, and I encourage him to do so. I just know better than to waste my time reading that wankery. remember, time and space = stephen hawking, banging techno = mills. [313] a story?
well this is a funny story i would like to tell u people here. i am a dj and i am from israel, in case u don`t know Psy-trance is huge here, techno is very small, and yes when people here talk about techno they only like hard stuff, like most people here really like hawtin but not like carl craig and such.(i think that all the techno people here r less than 1000). we did a couple of nits we got like 90 or less people inside. now a good friend of main who is a goa dj but gives much respect to detroit told asked me and my partner to spin is the small room of a big Goa party, i mean they play stuff like 145BPM and even more. it was very funny but sad too. i kicked off with stuff from SND,basic channel, and alot of minimal dub music. after that we did play alot of micro house stuff from poker-flat,playhouse,palette,kompakt force inc. ,7th city, raygun and such. except for a couple of friends who likes us no one did even pay attention some people looked at the SND record like it was a crazy thing from mars. after 2 hours i got the idea no one cares so i played a killer set of good minimal techno and mean ass elektro (there was only 1 guy who did breakdancing!!!- that was my audience). i finished with the last 7th city with duvante and Lig. i didn`t know if i should cry or lough. thats the story wanted i wanted to share and i`ll be happy for some remarks. How anyone can describe that as an example of lazy production is beyond me. I guess that I have to say out front that I am an all-out fan of The Other Day. Tracks like Sleeping Giants and Spider Formation just do it for me - and in those terms (while some tracks on Every Dog... were good) I felt like the production as a whole did not have that oomph (statement of intent) that came through in The Other Day. I felt like I was listening to Invisible Orchestra again. Kent: 'Lazy'? Err, as a producer I can tell you they're anything but. hmmm... perhaps I've just spent too much time over the last few years listening to jazz-flavoured hip hop (pls. don't bring a Kid Loco record _near_ me). The tracks by Adult., Perspects and DMX Krew are the ones that stand out strongest on the album IMHO. An entire weeks worth of events were recently dedicated to this sound deemed electroclash by the event's promoters in NYC. (I'm hoping that term doesn't stick btw). This li'l sub genre seems pretty strong in Germany and other parts of Europe as well. I've had the album for some time, and every time I listen to it I look forward to and ponder what kind of impact, if any, it will have on bringing the sound stronger/closer to the states-though from the number of mullets in nyc, it's already caught on quite well here;) Another artistic and fine job by Ghostly. my medicated dog is licking the carpet for no good reason, diana --- Rob [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Friday December 7th, 2001 Ghostly International presents... chapter II: Disco Nouveau A Ghostly evening of electro, disco-punk and neo-new wave. Re: [313] anti-technology
first of all, the emphasis should be on the music, not on the insturments. the instruments are the organon you cannot make music with out the instruments but, it is only an instrument. many people claim that technology drives civilazation and humanity into progress, and can only help the human race. as i feel it in the long term technology isnot something u can check in terms of good or bad. we have a fact, people can make music with computers, i can still remeber doing an article for a professor which was about electronic music and if sample based music is real music. my conclusion was that its not the instruments that counts but rather what the artists is doing with them.same goes with digital music. its even more then that with this technology i can even start my own radio station (something i cannot do in the REAL radio since my country sucks big time). but there`s a price to pay as allways. and we keep paying it every day. Being enabled to create by a piece of software is not equivalent to being able to create. More people creating because they _can_, instead of because they feel the need (read, inspired) to is more likely to increase the amount of uninspired, lackluster music out there (those records you put back in the bin and try to forget about). I hear the argument that this will help people who didn't know they had the ability to create music to discover it, but are the ends worth the means? -Original Message- From: Samuel Hobbs [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, October 30, 2001 7:29 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] anti-technology i have wondered recently about the fears of technology. ever since the beginning of the use of fire, people have sought to simplify their lives by combining and simplifying processes. computers are only the most recent example of this process. music that was once only with the physical manipulation of air is now possible with the tweaking of knobs and buttons. entire symphonies can now be written on computer and less and less organic, real music is being made today. is this a problem... i think that technological advances lead people into a realm of unknown territory, where the rules are altered. ultimately those who acclimate themselves to these rules are those who succeed. in this issue of technology and music, i think it is necessary to agree that there is no loss here. no one person is prevented from expressing themselves in musical terms with this advent of new technology. now one is prevented or chastized for using established methods. in fact old school recording methods are probably considered chic by most on this list. the only thing that is happening is that more and more people are able to create with this new technology. many may ask how is this good? i ask how can it be bad. -sam __ Do You Yahoo!? Re: [313] technology
here`s my 2 cents. my defenition of techno (when people ask me what i spin thats what i answer) is music with some sort of feeling. innovative and kool. i know that as a genere TECHNO was created in detroit. i love detroit - but i think good music (or techno) is created in many other places. defenitions are bad! as for trance i have mixed emotions about this genere since in my country most of the people who like elektronic music are into trance (goa, psy, or progressive). many of my friends are dj who spin this music. the early stuff were great lots of emotion but in a weird way their scene is more like drum`n`bass no more new innovation. the progressive music for me is just rubbish with no soul. Well real Detroit techno was over before it started in some respects. Kind of like the Velvet Underground -- by the time anyone paid attention it was long since gone. Later on it was seminal in influencing a later generation. The people nowadays that call what they do techno, and more particular Detroit techno are influenced and informed by the originators, but Techno stopped being 'TECHNO' when it spread beyond a very exclusive scene that only really involved a few hundred people in and around Detroit. Which isn't to say that good music in the dance idiom stopped in 1990 -- it's just not the same thing. There's a global dance culture that has as much to do with fashion and pills as it does with music, and thousands of people producing music on every continent, each with their own agenda. About trance: I've seen a couple of trance DJs that I really liked, and it was because they have taste and seek out interesting things outside the mainstream. The real problem with trance is the same problem with things like filter house, drum and bass, and two step: Specific, limited production tricks and rhythms, that a producer should use once or twice and then try something new, become codified and serve as the basis of a thousand slight variations, all inferior to the original. That there's a market for all that cheap repetition says something about the utilitarian nature of dance music -- DJs always want something new and slamming, but it can't be so new they lose their audience. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
