I've seen the band once, about a year ago now, and thoroughly enjoyed
what they were doing. I can only imagine that they're even tighter now.

Anyway, here's some words and pictures from that particular gig last
year.

Subject Recloose Live Band Show

I've been in New Zealand for the last two-plus weeks on vacation.
Had a chance to catch Recloose DJing at Sandwiches in Wellington
a week ago, and Matt's new project, the Recloose Live Band, at a
street fair in Petone just outside Welly last night. At the corner
of Jackson and Buick, would you believe.

The band is an eight-piece jazz/funk outfit playing mostly
originals and really is quite good, staying away from the cliches
that plague these kinds of efforts.

They have a brand-new CD out, Backwards and Sideways,
recorded live at the San Francisco Bath House club in Wellington
last November:

http://www.myspace.com/reclooseliveband

The CD doesn't have my favorite track, "Sanctuary," but you can
hear it on Matt's Myspace page:

http://www.myspace.com/mattchicoine

I talked with Matt a little and I think he misses tha D a lot
(who doesn't of those who emigrate), and making a living doing
music is hard anywhere but harder when your main markets
are 10,000 miles away, but he's scraping through and doing it
grand. So, good on yer Matt. And will someone PLEASE book
this band for the Detroit music festival this year!

(313) Calling SF / Seattle / Tacoma 313ers

2007-02-03 Thread Benn D. Glazier
Well it's been a while since i've posted on this list, but some of the
older heads might recognise the name from the mid 90s on this list.

I'm hitting SF in late Feb and will be around the west coast for 10 days
or so.

I'm aware Stephen Lammers (aka Horsepower) is over in SF but if there's
any likeminded heads who are around town between the 23rd and the 3rd of
March in SF, Seattle and Tacoma then this Australian would be keen to
hear from you.

>From the site:

MESSAGE FROM MAD MIKE::

Hello this is Mad Mike co-owner of Submerge mgmt. We appreciate your
patience as we have had the site down the past couple of weeks. During
the next few weeks, we also ask for your understanding and input as we
mold the new site for functionality. In an effort to better serve you we
have been making some vast improvements to the site specifically in the
areas of credit card protection, customer selectable shipping options,
and more payment options coming soon.

Technology has always been a friend to Detroit electronic music. From
the miniature hardware pieces of the 80's to the fax machine in the 90's
and now the internet and computer software.

Technology has always been key in this music staying free and
independant. We have been introduced to (often by you our customers) and
found technology that has consistently brought cultures together and
made a global dance community possible. Electronic Music could possibly
be the only form of music that the fans of the music actually contribute
by being more than just a consumer!

A customer from Australia designed our web shopping cart system! Former
customers now run our mailorder and websites here in Detroit!! This
bringing together aspect of technology is unique as input from customers
has always been vital to our survival and we appreciate it and want it
to continue. Technology can be a dual edged sword also. As our internet
site becomes ruthlessly efficient and less prone to human error it at
the same time could become cold and unforgiving.

Thanks for your patience and your continued support.

I jumped on in Dec 1994 from memory. Lurked for a while, and then asked
the dreaded question about Drexciya.

I remember Otto, Matt McQ, and then the Australian contingent, Jason
Martin, Tony Tyquin and Patrick HAF .. Alan O was on the list for a
while.. ooh it's a bit hazy. Minimal Nation was doing the rounds, Carl
Craig was monstering it with Throw under the Paperclip People moniker,
and Juan and Orlando gave us Game One.

I know I copped flak about the Drexciya question, especially from Teep.

I don't post much now due to being in a job as opposed to having a few
hours a day to waste at uni.

Re: (313) techno LP's

2004-02-09 Thread Benn D. Glazier
Here's a few

Earth & Nightfall - John Beltran
Black Buildings - Detroit Escalator Company
Remain - Ismistik
Internal Empire - Rob Hood
Landcrusing - Carl Craig
Atlantis - X-103
Seven Days - Kenny Larkin

It depends on the purpose of the album. Sometimes an artist releases an
album in CD format which is a slew of 12 inch releases, and does so, so
the everyday home listener can have some music in their collection by a
certain artist.

Whereas some artists which actually compose an album in the more
traditional sense, whereby there is a flow of tracks and a theme between
all the sounds - X-103 is a just one of many prime example of this.

Just a note.. Damian Donato wasn't the artist on the 100% Juice EP. It
was (DJ) HMC. Damian Donato (aka Dames, DMZ, Outpost Uncorporated) is the
label manager for Juice Records and the release was licensed to Music
Man, where on its release the error was made.

I don't think you'd call the music at Voodoo techno these days. Not even
that 'tekkno' music.

If you love your breakbeat or your hands-in-the-air house, then Sydney's
the place for you.

I've been living in Sydney for almost 4 years now after living in the two
Australian cities which could hold claim to the title of techno capital
through the 90s, being Melbourne and Adelaide, and in that past 4 years,
there's been not a lot to speak of (on the 313 tip) bar Chinese Laundry
and The Dendy (S*P*R), which as mentioned has both now passed on. It's
also not through lack of trying by promoters and djs, Sydney has what
could only be described as a superficial dance music 'scene' which is
more focussed on the things that don't involve the music so much.

That said, the resistance is growing. ;)

I'd certainly say Southern Cross is the Juice/Dirty House etc. record
that I played the most in a club next to Life Support System which was an
anthem in Adelaide, however my favourite? Tough... Blue Harvest by
Paddee, Analog Dialogue, Secret Weapon, Out Of Order, Dragonfly... in
fact many of those were huge club hits in Adelaide, along with Phreakin',
which was probably the release that got the most notice. I also do
believe it was the track that took him the shortest time to do.

HMC is semi-retired... that's probably the best way to put it. He'll
occaisionally play a party, do a 6 hour set of the old times if you like
- playing house, techno and everywhere in between. Not sure if he's still
buying records, wouldn't be suprised that he is.

The Juice Records website is back up and running and label manager DMZ is
up to no good again - http://www.juicerecords.com.au

Rob Little is HMC's brother and he's had one release on Adelaide label
Undefined.

2003-12-05 Thread Benn D. Glazier
We're talking about a venue in Sydney which has multiple levels with DJs
playing different sounds - over 2000 punters it can hold. What can Honkys
hold - a few hundred?

It's always going to be a different dynamic with such a difference in
venues types. Derrick was good in Sydney, and his level of 'good' usurps
most DJs, however maybe he just didn't feel the electricity in Sydney.

Here's my review on the night -
http://www.inthemix.com.au/p/np/viewnews.php?id=13137

As for home, we arrived maybe 45 mins before his set and left 20 mins
after. Danced near the front buried with friends, and tried to ignore the
surroundings.

Sure it was hard to handle the few idiots around the place, but hey...
you've got to take the good with the bad.

Sam - you heard HMC DJ? One of the few seamless DJs that rocks my world.
;)
