(313) MINIMAL'S KINGPINS TAKEOVER LONDON
HAWTIN VS VILLALOBOS: MINIMAL'S KINGPINS TAKEOVER LONDON (London, UK) - On Saturday 29 September, not one but two of techno's brightest stars will be plying their wicked trade in London's best clubs. Yes, with Minus boss Richie Hawtin hosting a label night at The End while Ricardo Villalobos is top of the bill over at Fabric, it looks like London is going to be the scene of a very interesting showdown indeed. Over at The End, Richie Hawtin and his Minus mob are playing as a part of the Beatport presents: Minus event, which also includes appearances from Marc Houle (who'll be playing live) and Troy Pierce on DJ duties too. The recent Bank Holiday Lost party featuring the Minus crew was apparently one of the best parties of the 'summer' London has just endured, so those who weren't able to make it now have a second chance to witness the minimal maestro Hawtin and his crew in action. Lest we forget, Minus was set up by Hawtin to be an outlet for the new, more minimal direction his work was taking in 1998 - way before the current vogue for the sparser, stripped-down techno that is now all over clubland. Meanwhile in Fabric's Room One, there's the mercurial Mr Villalobos, alongside Bruno Pronsato, who's playing a live set, and Jamie Jones, the East End's own minimal maestro - whose tracks Panama City and Panic have been absolutely essential so far this year. Robert Hood is also playing at the club (in Room Two, alongside Slam playing a live set), so the Farringdon club has its down techno legend in the house as well. This could be the biggest weekend that London's techno community has seen in a long time. And it seems the question is...where will you be on the night Regards, Martijn

(313) TECHNO ARCHITECT MILLS TO OPEN FASHION STORE
Maybe old news for some u...i found this on the web... If you are trained as an architect, and grow out to become one of the world's most prolific techno artists, why not start your own fashion store? The latter seems to be the case for Jeff Mills, who is starting out his own fashion store in downtown Chicago with his long time partner and Axis record head Yoko Uozumi. They recently started a project they call the Gamma Player Shop, as an expansion of what creative abilities they have and inspired by, or simply because Jeff doesn't want to be touring the globe at an older age, offering a selection of special international fashion brands, with an emphasis on Europe and Japan. Of course, music is not left out of the equation, as Mr. Mills has compiled a CD for the special opening of the store, labeled The Universe By Night, offering a host of special edits and previously unreleased tracks. Although we debate whether techno is so suitable for an up market, 'haute couture' fashion store, Mills is by no means the only techno icon to delve into fashion. What to think of Ellen Allien, who recently announced her own clothing line? The Gamma Player shop will open March 15. The track listing to its opening soundtrack is included below. Track Listing: 1. 14 Dreams 2. Gamma Player 3. The March 4. The Art of Barrier Breaking 5. Now Is The Time 6. The Nomads of Niger 7. Time Machine 3 8. Place De La Bastille 9. Gata 10. Moody 11. Now from what I can tell, it's a bunch of stuff associated with GSR, who put the mix CD out, and I even like some of the tracks, but The True Electro Experience? BULLSH1T. I always kinda liked Acquaviva's DJ style precisely because he really had his own style -- maybe a little glitter-makeup clubbier than I usually go for, but he sold it, and had enough taste to avoid the worst excesses. But I'm sorry to say it sure seems like he's gone all Peter Tong on this one... # Note: Any views or opinions are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Channel Four Television Corporation unless specifically stated. On the 'folk' tip, I just got sent the new Alexander Tucker album on ATP - it's brilliant. On the electronic tip, listening to The Eurythmic's 'Touch' LP always reinvigorates my love of electronic music. That album is the mothership for me because I heard it when very young, it had a profound influence. Arpanet's 'Wireless Internet' LP is also really doing it for me. I'm on a bit of a 'Donaldfest' at the moment.
RE: (313) Hawtin
Steve Rachmad played a great set, altough he was on a bit early DJ Bone ROCKED the place...this man needs to be booked more...GRREAT! Sven Väth, think of him what u want (i know he's not loved very much on this list) ..this man is still up there. He pulls large crowds and plays with the audience, not ur avarage bangbangtechno but a subtle style of minmal, elektro and techno.. great mix, played for 3hrs, and he got me dancing and jumping, loved it! Dave Clarke is man for ur techno, now he's a bangbangtechno man...proper skills, loads of effects and scratching..high tempo and besides that Mr. Clarke was even jumping and smiling an dancing behind the dex, and that's not often to be seen:-) Remark: a boy and a girl climb upon the stage to dance in front of Clarke during his set, he looks at them, stops the music and doesn't say a word but only looks at them and only restarts the music after he looked them of stage...seem like he doesn't like dancers or so:-) Only heard half an hour or so from Hawtin, sounded allright..large crowd in front of the stage but still it seemed to miss a spark to get the crowd going. Also heard Misstress Barbara, she changed a bit from banging techno to minimal techno but her set her was banging all the way, was allright so to say. There was also a stage with the now so popular rock 'n rave bands..guitars and dancebeats with a punkattitude. Now where have i heard that before??? Nid and Sancy, anyone?? Nice festival, weather was fine after all and so were the beers www.3voor12.nl will have sets from the fesitval up a in a few days. Berlin [EMAIL PROTECTED] rocks. Maybe some parts are like that. But we either didn't get in to those - difficulties on the door at Weekend Friday and Watergate Saturday (though I have been in before) or avoided them via the helpful advice of 313s own Berlin bible Roman. As far as I'm concerned it's all about a city that's both full of history and fabulous old architecture yet's as decaying-industrial and counter-culture as you like. I haven't been to all the clubs on the planet (yet) so I don't know for sure but somehow I suspect Berghain's up there. Massive. A maze. Incredible soundsystem. Which just churns out that wonderful sound of continuous hard tech like some faceless machine (no DJs on podiums there). Get there on Saturday night, if you like you can leave on Sunday night. People wandering around naked. All sorts of strangeness afoot. I wouldn't like to do it too often but it's fun now and then. And that's just one place. We managed to visit 6 places over the course of Friday, Saturday, Sunday and all were good in some way or other - Maria and Sternradio also get a special mention. Thank goodness I stayed in bed late on Sunday night (= 3am Monday morning) when 2 of our party had a sudden rush of blood to the head and decided to go out again managing to go to 4 venues before we enticed them back to the hostel with text messages an hour before we were due to leave Monday dinner time. Apparently the place they left last (some mad gay club under a railway arch on Alexanderplatz) was still going strong. Where else are you gong to find that at 11am on a Monday? OK Ibiza but this is a respectable capital city - maybe Marsell's gaff (sadly missing from my CV, must mend this soon).

My take on steve bug (oh yeah, HI LIST! Been off for awhile): Dessous (his label) WAS one of the more forward thinking deep house/techno labels not afraid to cross lines stylistically and take a few risks at the deeper end ('99-2001 ish). Then they got caught in the acid/electro/house/uktech-haas loop and the releases got pretty samey. Head up arse. Some occasional good stuff in between the crud though. Steve as producer also used to get into my head as he always had an affinity for really round solid bass and melodic synth and string lines that are just right up my alley. Then he started taking notes from others coughjohn dahlbackcough and his personal stuff followed in the vein of his label. He got lost in a definition of sound and hasn't made it out yet. Steve as a dj. Always spot on when it comes to making you really feel the good stuff. He's one of the few left with such a high profile that I can tell still wants to connect with the crowd and push them to their limits whether he's going deep or spastic or wonky. Love him on the decks. Smooth. Just my take. Anyone heard this one? Nation 12's long-lost album, Electrofear is going to be released by Tape Modern Records on the 14th of November. The album includes John Foxx's collaboration with Tim Simenon, Remember, plus Nation 12's second single, Electrofear.? However, most of the material has never been heard before. In total there are seventy-seven minutes of music including vocal-led John Foxx songs such as Shadow Dancing, Your Kisses Burn and She Was, as well as very different versions of Cities of Light and Invisible Women. The album was rescued from obscurity by a John Foxx fan and then restored and mastered at Serendipity.

In between a busy DJ schedule, Steve also reserved few weeks in 2006 for studio work, as some major labels are awaiting for his EPs and remixes. Parallel, he is involved in the project initiated by Dutch dj-legend Joost van Bellen, for which he is remixing Sebastian Bach's St. Mathew Passion-project that started in 2003 and culminated on Easter 2003 when a selection of Dutch producers and visual artists presented their outcomes. (313) DE9 Transitions
I gave this new mixalbum by R. Hawtin a few good listenings over the past few days and i do not know what to think of it. He did a great job in cutting, pasting, mixing, morphing and restructuring all the trakcs and putting them togeheter again But i cannot get rid of the feeling that it all sounds a bit dull and sometimes boring...i mean it just goes on and on in the same Tempo, and there's clicks, hicks and ticks everywhere but i do miss some peakpoint stuff...As said, great job in what he did and the way it's been put together but some more action would have made it more exciting for me. Do some of u have any thoughts on this mix??? Martijn
RE: (313) DE9 Transitions
As said, i respect the man for taking things further and trying things new, i mean the mix is good, no doubts about that. But i do find a it bit to much fabricated, everything has been put togheter so carefully and so thought of that it doesn't sound spontaneous anymore. Dunno what it sounds like when he plays this stuff out live..haven't heard hem recently. But hey, that's great about music..it sounds and means different to everybody and that's great! I dunno - my fave mix has always been the Mixmag Live CD. Quality from start to finish. I prefer the Transitions mix to 'Closer To The Edit' - I always felt that the concept of DE9:CE was stronger than the final product with that one. I also think the DVD mix is better than the CD. However, I think the main issue for me is that I feel Hawtin has been substituting techniques for soul for a long time - this is just my opinion and I am not dissing him at all. For me, I prefer a more raw energy than something that feels like it is the carefully-considered execution of some pre-existing blueprints. The clicks, ticks, beeps and creeps have their place and can generate their own funk - but I'm probably more inclined to side with Martijn here. You can have too much of a good thing. I've only heard/seen it once so far, and not all of it at that, but I definitely thought it was the best of the three (I've never really had time for the other two). I'd probably have to hear it again to say if I thought it sounded flat overall, but on my first listen, I didn't have that impression, and it's *precisely* what I would listen for, as I thought that was precisely the downfall of the previous two. I was actually quite impressed! Best recorded Richie Hawtin mix since X-Mix 3 if ya ask me. I also thought his track selection was a lot more interesting than the previous ones. Heaven 17: Out on September 26th is Before After, the newest album from Heaven 17 and their first in over 9 years. Announced since the year 2001, Before After offers Heaven 17 in old quality: pop melody, disco beats, warmth, exquisite design, soul and electro-funk. Fronted by Glenn Gregory, the band also holds Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh as members who both have pioneered British synthesizer pop through The Future, The Human League and Heaven 17 itself. They are responsible for two of the UK's greatest electro singles: Being Boiled and (We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thing and elevated the role of producers to the level of artist in the 1980s with Terence Trent D'Arby and re-launching Tina Turner's career. In recent years Martyn Ware has recorded music with Vince Clarke, Ian Craig Marsh has been involved with soundtrack work while Glenn Gregory's ambient pop group Honeyroot caught the public's attention with their version of Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart. -Oorspronkelijk bericht- Van: Odeluga, Ken [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Verzonden: donderdag 24 november 2005 09:01 Aan: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: 313 Org Onderwerp: RE: (313) Heaven 17 Really? (313) Speedy J Collabs
Anyone heard their album 'metalism' or seen them live already?? It sounds quite allright to me..pounding! Chris Liebing and Speedy J Collabs session format: The focus of the show is collaboration and improvisation. They will both be on stage performing together for the duration of the show. as with the previous collabs sessions in detroit and rotterdam the way they perform totally blurs the boundaries between dj-ing and playing live. for the music they draw from a huge collection of custom loops, tracks and sound which they generated during their studio sessions in the past 2 years, and there will also be use of other people's music (the last remaining element of dj-ing in the show), however, everything can be manipulated, morphed, re-arranged and treated on the fly. The live-act will take minimum 3 hours, if possible 4-6 hours.

(313) Turn the volume down....
UK CLUBS TO TURN IT DOWN It's not everyday that DJs are told to turn the music down, especially not by politicians but now 365Mag can reveal that has just happened. The UK government is set to reduce the level of noise in British clubs by up to 5% from April 2006 with a law that is intended to protect the hearing of those in the music industry. When the new levels are passed by parliament in the Spring, employers in clubs and venues will be expected to protect their staffs hearing with a reduction in volume and a decrease in time spent exposed to excessive noise. Lawrence Waterman, President of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) says: We need to help employs who work in the music industry to understand the risks of noise exposure. According to UK Heath and Safety statistics, around 170,000 people suffer from work related tinnitus, deafness or other ear-related problems. DJs who suffer from damaged hearing are Rocky from X-press 2 fame, Laurent Garnier and Tall Paul, who consulted a specialist in the late 90s, only to be told he had done irreparable damage to his hearing. This law raises the question of the use of ear filters once again. DJs such as Roger Sanchez, Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier, Sander Kleinenberg and Erick Morillo all use custom-built earplugs to protect the ears from those dangerous high frequencies coming out of the monitors. Maybe the familiar ringing in the ears the next morning after a club-night could about to become a thing of the past for those on the dancefloor too after purchasing these plugs, or is that 'whistling' sound simply an integral part of a good night out?

F242 at the Effenaar in Eindhoven, was HARD!! (as in volume), but to be honest they are bit over the hill for me with all of their classic tracks getting some 'moderntechnoreworkupdate' and to it doesn't do justice to their music...it makes it even sound 'outdated'. But there's hope, check this: Front 242 will play 2 nights in Brussels at the Ancienne Belgique on March 3 and 4 2006. The double night will celebrate Front 242's 25 years of existence. Included in these two days event will be 2 different Front 242 concerts with DJ- and band supports, late night shows in de AB-Club and special guests as well as an 'classic set' in the orginal 'warfare' setting . Also available will be an art installation and exhibition on the band's history and artwork. Since both nights will be very different one from the other, a combi-ticket will be available allowing the biggest fans to enjoy both nights. Tickets will be 24 euro per night or 40 euro for a combi ticket. -Oorspronkelijk bericht- Van: Klaas-Jan Jongsma [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Verzonden: woensdag 9 november 2005 19:17 Aan: Blaauw, Martijn de CC: 313@hyperreal.org Onderwerp: Re: (313) For the old-skoolers! RE: (313) Joe Lewis (Or Louis) (was Frank de Wulf)
To get back on the orginal topic: I dug out my copy's of the 'B-sides' by Frank de Wulf and gave it a listen last night...sounded a bit dated but brought back some great memories.. great music which kicked off a great time in music as well! Now, where's my whistle... -Oorspronkelijk bericht- Van: Odeluga, Ken [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Verzonden: dinsdag 8 november 2005 16:42 Aan: Dan Bean CC: 313 313 Onderwerp: RE: (313) Joe Lewis (Or Louis) (was Frank de Wulf) Sure Dan. It doesn't say that he claimed the material to be solely his own creation. On 8 Nov 2005, at 15:21, Odeluga, Ken wrote: Jamie Read, had at some point done precisely what he's now accusing 'Joe Lewis' (also known as Joe Louis in earlier releases) of doing: releasing jointly-produced work without crediting the other producers. I don't see any evidence in the discogs post for that. *Read it Dan* Read was keen to have his music released on Relief Records, a Chicago label with cult status in the underground UK scene. He gave the DAT, which contained music that had been worked on by all four aforementioned UK artists, to Joe Lewis for the purpose of giving to Relief as potential material for the label. Some time later 4 of these tracks appeared on Relief as a Joe Louis release called Back To The Beginning. *** Still see no evidence? Now with such a history, and with what looks like a 'tit-for-tat' move by Joe Lewis (releasing the tracks again without crediting Jamie Read) it seems implausible (although not impossible) that 'Joe Lewis' wouldn't tell Peacefrog all this when handing over the tapes. Why on earth would Joe Lewis tell Peacefrog that he didn't make most of the tracks on the LP? Precisely because he didn't! I feel Peacefrog are being a little disingenuous in claiming not to know. They know now, but didn't know at the time, why should they? I'm saying they did know at the time. Do keep up man! Ken

If you donate money u get more priviliges (dunno if i spelled it right but u might get the point:-) and making it easier for u to find stuff, also u get to jump over the peeps waiting in the qand yes, the search abilities have gone a bit downhill that's true, it could be that lots of peeps have wondered of to other p-2-p stuff?? Question: any other p-2-p programm that u find good besides Soulseek? Martijn Ps. I'm quite digging this new Hard Fi album called ' stars of cctv'...it's non-techno but very the Clash! I've been using it for a while now but to be honest I'm not finding it as useful for listening to rarities as I hoped. For example right now I'm searching for Aquarian Project, t'n' i (I'm after tracks by these 2 I was tipped off about by posts on this list!) and Instant House and coming up with zero results and for Insync and only getting 3 results (but that does prove my setup is actually working in some fusion). At the time someone recommended leaving the search going for a little while, these have been going for days. I remember at the time someone saying you can get anything you want - Bulgarian folk bands etc., obviously this isn't what I'm finding, what is other people's experience? F
