This is why expecting freebies from labels that are running limited

It DOES happen on rare occasions though.

Well, there is the concept if the 'record pool', where a bunch of DJ's group
together behind a 'sound', and promote the f*ck out of whatever they decide
they like by creating a group chart, then everyone in the group gets
assloads of those records because everyone who produces that style wants
their records charted through that pool. But this is not terribly common in
the world of dp house or
dtroiiit
t techno, because it's not generally driven by a mob mentality. :)

Basically, if you got some connects wif some labels, they may give you some
rekkids, otherwise, it's all about you convincing a label why they will
uniquely benefit by you getting free material from them. Tall order in
general, since most of us play what we like regardless. Why is Peacefrog
gonna give you a double-pack 4 free if you're gonna buy it anyway, or if you
don't buy it, why the hell does Peacefrog care? It's gonna sell out anyway.
This is why expecting freebies from labels that are running limited
pressings is a bit rediculous. By all means, if you have a case you should
try though. It's not hopeless. It's just that it's no different than any
other type of business. You need to justify yourself and quantify the
rewards of your promotional activities.

Note that Kenny Larkin has nothing to do with the last track Derrick May
plays in his mayday mix. There are 3 tracks on transmat 020, he plays the
A-side and mixes it with the B1. It is the B2 that is by Kenny Larkin...
just an error on the tracklisting me thinks.

My 2 cents...

I personally hate the silver sonys. I have owned the pair just under them..
the Sony V-600. I make music into the wee hours of the night with these and
they are comfy and no sound leaks out. They fit over your whole ear instead of
ON your ear like the silver sonys. I have had them for 6 years now and Its
nice to mix with them as well because they are a totally closed cup design and
when your cuing you dont have spillage from your monitor into the headphones.

If my v-600s break.. Im goin to buy some new ones. They are about $100...

I don't think pressing vinyl will totally become a part of the past...after all
they still have to press the controller vinyl for FS. It IS a more cost
effective solution to djing...not to mention the weight factor when traveling.
Plus you could drop your own tracks, convert them to mp3 and BAM!...play them

Excellent point/idea. Not only can you have a complete studio without buying
all the hardware now, but also a production facility. With that, all you'll
need is a mini dat for sampling while out of the house. I think we all should
buy some stock in Stanton! ;)

I probably wouldnt bother buying any more scratch/breaks records either -
making your own by knocking together samples and encoding them would be
quality. You could even batch simialr sounds on the same mp3 and categorize
them [crazy vocal, orchestral hits, wooshing type sounds etc]. It would be
great for taking samples of films/tv etc too and be able to scratch them
10mins later :]

RE: [313] FiNal ScrAtch - finally roadtested...

2002-09-19 Thread Darren Longton (Merch)
Got this from the FS forum...when I asked the same question.

this is a rather mythical theory which i've been looking into alsoother
theories are over-eager RIAA preamp curves, vinyl characteristics etc.

if this feedback theory really would be true then you would be able to hear a
difference in every different room due to different positioning of speakers, DJ
booth, walls, anti-feedback solutions etc.etc. furthermore in a large room the
low frequencies would be returned rather late (think about sever ms's, probably
over 10ms or even 20ms) before they could be picked up by the needle/cartridge
again, which would create a very floppy delayed doulbe-triggered kind of
effect on the bassdrum

i find it hard to believe this is the case, but i am very interested in other
people's thoughts about this.

If this really would be true an effect like this could be replicated by a delay
line which is lowpass filtered and added to the signal after a few ms's..

When I first heard of final scratch, I was convinced this would be the
future of DJ-ing. Not FS by itself, but in combination with normal vinyl. (I
am convinced I will always still be using vinyl, if only not to be totally
dependent of computers) And when I saw John Aquaviva showcasing the first
version here in Utrecht I was even more convinced.
I do keep missing one remark in this whole discussion however. One great
aspect about playing music from vinyl is feedback; the amplified music,
specifically bass, reflects back on the record and gets picked up by the
needle again and amplified again. Too much feedback leads to rumble, but
just enough creates this fat deep bass sound we're all so addicted on. Final
scatch can never recreate this, since the records don't contain the actual
music.

So far this is the only real flaw I can find in this whole setup.

Unless the FS guys already thought of building in some kind of feedback
plugin? If not, FS or Native Instruments, you've got work to do...

Joost

I went to the Plasa light/sound show in london the other week and finally
got a chance to roadtest F/S on the uk distributor of stanton's stand :]

I was thoroughly impressed and I would say it is very difficult to fault - I
gave it some solid scratching + crabbing and it held up fine as well as
skipping the needle about, spinbacks etc etc. The software is pretty good
too - you can see a waveform of the tune and its not too difficult to skip
to a break etc. The 'record box' functionality is quite nice - they had
house/hip-hop/breaks/etc boxes set up on F1-F9 keys.

After I'd finished dribbling all over it I had a chat to some guys on the
stand...from what they were saying it sounds like u need a Linux partition
on your laptop/pc but they give you a distribution in the box [not sure why
they couldnt have F/S on a bootable linux CD as that would be way less
hassle]. I think UK retail is between 450-500GBP. They were running it off
a compaq presario notebook [not sure what spec] but the guy said anything
around the 500mhz mark should do the trick. Spare records are gonna be
around the 15GBP mark too.

in summary.*I WANT ONE!!* :]

Did they do any promotion outside of e-mail?

And how far out did they start promote? not very.

it takes a distinct combination of artist, venue and promotion to make a

Well...the artists were there, the venue was PERFECT, but there WAS a lack
of promotion. Obviously. I just think that most of the people that are in
the scene now, are more of the commercial/progressive persuasion. Not to
many purists left.

I was out of town, but i doubt i would have gone anyways.

Did they do any promotion outside of e-mail?

And how far out did they start promote? not very.

it takes a distinct combination of artist, venue and promotion to make a
night go off. i don't think this was done for this event.

There just SO much to pick from on your mix list. (about $1,200 for every mix)
A friend of mine, Amy Ricketts has most of them...I just can't remember which
are deep and which are aren't. I remember there's even one that sounds almost

I've heard of quot; The Surgeonquot; from Detroit and

ever heard
of quot;Surgeonquot; from England.

Let's let quot; The Surgeonquot; keep going and make
it big and
we can let the lawyers do the rest.

To tell you all the truth, though, I was actually
thinking about going to see quot;Surgeonquot; and
Juan's B-day
party because I thought it was Anthony Child so I could
see how people could get disgruntled about it. I'd be
pissed if I had already purchased my tix.

I'd probably also be pissed if another artist started
using my name. I'm not sure how I would handle it
though. If I found out that there was another artist
already using my name (like there is on mp3.com) then
I'm not sure what I would do. If he was huge (as in
famous) Id probably step down though...

This may be due to the differences between American English and Proper

Well, here is what I think. Delete now...

I've heard of quot; The Surgeonquot; from Detroit and
 that he is
a really good house/booty DJ. I am a huuge fan of
quot;Surgeonquot;. Technically he's not even using
 the same
name. Plus, it is a different stlye of music. I
 wouldn't doubt if quot;The Surgeonquot; hadn't even
 ever heard
 of quot;Surgeonquot; from England.

If he was huge (as in
famous) Id probably step down though...

just put them back. as it's always better to keep them as they were
designed. it's pretty much the same if you have 15 monitor and it can
do 1024x768 resolution at 75Hz refresh rate and you run it 1600x1200
resolution at 85Hz refresh rate. probably doesn't last for long. (okay
a bit extreme example but you get the idea)

I have played on all kinds of tables, Sl's pitched up, regular ones, Vestax,

Nah, been playing with them for almost 10 years now, no wandering as far as
I know, although if you play oldskool chicago and disco like I do you do get
used to records bpm-ing all over the place :-) the advantage of that is that
mixing straight-up perfect bpm-tracks turns into a picknick ;-)

So does the new Denon tables DP-DJ151's...I just bought some...I like the
feature, but they still have to iron out the new functionality. Unfortunetly
it also creates a slight chorus effect while maintaining the pitch. kindof a
bummer.

I imagine this will come in time, but its a very cpu intensive task to be
done realtime in software - F/S looks like it probably has enough trouble
doing all its current dsp on a PIII. At present vinyl touch classic
(www.mixmachines.com) does this but with hardware dsp.

This would work, but why couldn't you dynamically correct the key based
on the amount of pitch? There should be a mathematical function for
determining the amount of skew and correcting it. That way, you could
record everything and the original speed and speed it up/slow it down
without affecting the pitch in real time.

you could pitch the record up or down when digitizing it (only down

RE: [313] please help

2002-08-29 Thread Darren Longton (Merch)
I would try that first. If that doesn't work...if I remember correctly, you
reboot and press F8 while it's booting so that you enter into the windows adv.
options menu, then select last known good configuration.

yes i installed the new media player along with explorer 6 a month or so ago
for the computer that runs 98se, that i use for internet, downloads, and
various odd jobs.

do u know how one might do that similiar function in 98se?
also would uninstalling media player work and then just stripping it's
program folder of all its contents? or does it hide this somewhere else in
the registry or in the windows folder?
i have spoke with many people and noone has a clue.

RE: [313] Final Scratch...

2002-08-19 Thread Darren Longton (Merch)
There already is a company that's copied the concept...I can't seem to remember
the name (of course). The UI is a little more graphically heavy (looks really
cool tho)...but it comes with coded vinyl and connection pieces as final
scratch does.

(the UI controls for each disc look like the large controls on a dj style cd
player)

...I think it's a little cheaper also (probably not much cheaper)

My main query is whether it's really worth buying it. The software may be
patented, but I doubt whether it's possible to patent the principle of
records as an analogue interface between the dj and mp3. Of course some
comany's going to try and copy it.

Hello all. I have a certain question concerning a certain record I
purchased a couple of months ago. The label simply reads 'Confuser' and
bears the names Tobias Marco. For the longest time I had no inkling as
to
what the origin of this album truly was. As serendipity would have it, I
was mindlessly leafing through an old issue of URB the other night, and lo
and behold I see the name Confuser 1 in the reviews section. (If I
remember
correctly, the guest columnist was Regis.) From what I gathered the
artists
responsible were none other than Tobias Schmidt and Marco Carola. Is this
correct? The tracks are amalgamations of samples from classic house and
techno tracks. Am I way off base here? Now, was this a one shot deal, or
the beginning of a continued series? And is Confuser simply a project name
or a label spinoff? Thanks in advance for the inside scoop.

WORD..
DEDBEAT
3
DATE: 8th,9th,10th, November
LOCATION: Pontin's Holiday Village, Hemsby, Norfolk.

The Story So Far.
After it's capture in late February the hip hop-electric-funk hybrid finally
escaped the evil scientist laboratory where it was being held. Efforts to
clone and mass produce it's vibe proved futile. Evading security cameras and
bypassing the guards it broke loose. Missing for months the melodic mutant
was recently detected roaming the coast of Norfolk in pursuit of it's only
source of nourishment; subsonic vibrations otherwise known as bass. The
renegade outfit known as Dedbeat are secretly assembling a base camp in the
direct path of this insect like being. Their aim; to infiltrate the
misunderstood entity and form an Audio Splinter Faction responsible for the
freedom alternative soundwaves into the blah, blah, blah...

Hmmm, a touch dramatic but nice visual imagery all the same. We get a bit
carried away at times and actually believe we're some sort of justice force
with divine objectives for music. But then again perhaps we're just up our
ar*e, chin stroking buffoons who like the sound of our own voice? - Why not
come along to Dedbeat 3 and make up your own mind, bouye! We got
some awesome acts for you (the original Brand Nubians back together!!!). And

Hey all-
I know it's a big and open question to ask but I'm curious to hear who - in

the one whose got it and manages to bring it to your heart every time.
And I'm talking only DJs here.

Now I know that people will want to argue about what is soulful and what
isn't - personally I don't care - and I really don't want to hear any
negative comments please - I'm just interested in the positive. I don't
want to see this go down as a Richie Hawtin doesn't play soul music
thread - if your grandma is the most soulful let me know and I'll respect
your opinion. Give some examples or details if you want.

I'm not looking to stir up controversy - just want to see who makes the
list(s).

Please keep this a fun discussion (argue off list).

Does anyone know of any local (313) shows he's to be playing @? I've been in
CA for the past couple yrs. and haven't picked up any flyers in a while.

thanks,

Claude Young goes to WORK too...the man sweats and dances
more than the crowd does sometimes. ;)

Indeed, he is a true working DJ in every sense of the word. I've never seen
him give less than 110% in a set (though I'm sure every DJ has their 'off'
nights, I've just never caught him on one of his). I've said this before on
313, but even when Claude plays harder/bangin trax (which is quite often) he
just just soaks them in funk with his mixing style, he adds the soul with his
mix hands even if the records themselves are intrinsically lacking it by
themselves. YOu kind of have to see/hear him in the mix to understand. I
realize it sounds a little corny, but it's true. He can make even the stiffest
pounders funky by what he does with them, the overlays, the faders, the
cut-n-scratch and pauses, drop-ins, etc. Everything to Claude is a hotmix tool.

I guess in some ways that's why I can stomach the harder Mills DJ sets, for the
same reasons... they're hard but still funky funk funk. That's the only kind
of hard techno set I'll go out to see anymore, if an agressive/funky DJ is
playing them. I realize how spoiled I was being by Detroit, seeing some of the
gigs I happened to catch

cheers,
Matt
