I don't think it lives up to what I've heard but it still is amazing albulm. The first track really sucks me in especially with the synthy opening. I think Ping Pong and Headcase are very good also. When listening to the albulm I think its important to keep in mind that it is a concept albulm, bringing you closer into the mind of Mr Hawtin. I think the vocals are a very important part of the albulm which relates directly to the concept behind it all. I'm constantly amazed on how dark the albulm feels. I will agree with Dennis and say that it is a must buy when it comes out in October. -K - Original Message - From: Dennis Donohue [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, August 05, 2003 1:17 PM Subject: (313) Plastikman - Closer Please forgive me if this has already been discussed, as I haven't yet seen anything about it. After giving Closer a few listens, I have to say that I'm very impressed at not only the musical quality but the way in which Plastikman was able to keep that traditional Plastikman sound, yet meld it into a new album that isn't walking on exactly the same ground that he's walked before. The whole album plays out like an album should, a full context of itself, with each song becoming a part of a greater whole, which is very enjoyable as a listener. All of the compositions include somewhat basic production methods, but used in a sort of finesse that really uses each part to its potential, instead of relying on tons of layers to tune out things that don't quite work. The very industrial-inspired vocal work is pretty non-descript and not over-the-top or cheesy, as one would suspect simply given the description. The heavy use of delay and reverb gives every production a lot of space and feel, ala Consumed, but the songs all have more of driving presence akin to the direction of earlier albums (sheet one, musik). This album is a marvel in keeping pace with expectation without dissapointing the faithful followers of a specific sound, while adding some new elements. Definitely Plastikman, but at the same time, definitely new. Buy on site. -dmd

LAURIE ANDERSON BRINGS 'HAPPINESS' TO AUSTRALIA Internationally renowned New York performance artist LAURIE ANDERSON will be in Australia this month to perform her acclaimed new solo show 'Happiness' with dates in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Anderson - multi-media priestess, classically trained violinist, ex cheerleader, poet, composer, ventriloquist, sculptor and film-maker - is one of the most diverse, fascinating and renowned performance artists in the world. She is certainly the only one to achieve and maintain household name status. This new work is one of her most personal and sees Anderson performing as DJ in the performance. Happiness is in part a self-portrait. In my past work, I have often mentioned things that I have seen or heard. This is the first time I have used so many experiences from my own life, which in this case has become a kind of touchstone for thinking about deception and fiction, the stories we tell ourselves so that we can go on. In Happiness the music is a pulse and a metronome. The sounds are a combination of keyboards, violin, and digital processing as well as several MIDI triggers. I get a lot of pleasure out of DJing these sounds which allows me to improvise. Unlike the technically more complex multi-media shows I often do, Happiness is meant to be flexible and in the moment. Re: [313] Does anyone compare to Hawtin?
Well, After having missed only this Hawtin Party over the past 4 years I have to say that the last Control left me feeling a little empty. I love a loud sound system just as much as anyone, but even wearing earplugs the entire night my ears *still* rang for seven days afterwards. 1500 people jammed into a club designed for 500 is really no fun either- no room left to boogie without punching some poor guy behind you in the head :-) Also, I'm really, really, *really*, sick of City Club. Expecting people to stand for 12 hours is unrealistic, and sitting on the City Club floor leaves one literally filthy. The other thing that bothers me a bit, is that at Integral, U, NYE 1999, and the +8 party at Saint Andrews, a lot of attention was put into the physical environment- transforming it into something that it wasn't before. The past series of parties at the City Club, the club has been left essentially untouched. I really don't like seeing the same old damn club exactly the way it was when I was a goth kid at 18 years old. It leaves more than a little to be desired Despite a couple of glorious moments at Control I and Jak, I still feel that something very fundamental was missing- what exactly that was I can't put my finger on. I've been really hoping to hear something deeper and funkier, more along the lines of de9:ce, but that still hasn't happened. I respect Hawtin as a producer and a DJ- it was really his sets on 96.3 when I was a teenager that introduced me to Techno. I've been a Hawtin freak for years, but nonetheless I have to say that I am ready for something truly innovative from him, and I know that he has the ability to do something completely off the wall compared to what he's been doing. What he doing is played out. It's time to move on. just my 666 cents jim - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mxyzptlk [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Kent williams [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, June 04, 2002 6:07 PM Subject: Re: [313] Does anyone compare to Hawtin? The fact is, he played very little 140bpm boom-boom-boom He seems to be taking cues from the Perlon guys and getting into weirder rhythms that are still funky and techno and housy all at the same time. Yes, there was a few hours of techno KREKC!!! But over the ten hours I was at the party, I found myself getting down as often as I was bangin' my head. Please don't speak about partys you did not attend. Its really bad form. I am no veteran of his DJ sets, but I was pretty unamazed at his DEMF set a while back. Re: [313] Does anyone compare to Hawtin?
Greets, Still, what's to say that techno has to have soul or funk - why can't we have some industrial sounding stuff? Oh, there's nothing wrong with industrial at all, that's really what led me to techno. I think a lot of Fred Giannelli's work has an industrial feel to it (in a very good way.) It's the swedish sound that I'm growing tired of. I still expect something a little more than that from Hawtin though. I love hard techno, but it has had it's time and place. I listened to nothing else for several years, and I'm ready for something different. I realize that this is my problem, and not Rich's. I still think that it is undeniable that Rich's Dj sets for the past for years have not really changed in sound, despite the addition and use of several really cool toys. The potential is there for so much more. Rich, being one that speaks of shifting gears when he gets in a rut, I think could use a little constructive criticism for getting stuck in one :-) jim - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Greetings All, Anyone pick up the new hermann kleine cd 'our noise' yet? Not quite as epic in scope as 'kickboardgirl,' but a most excellent disc nonetheless. It even contains an excursion into jesus mary chain styled pop. These are the guys that introduced me to the whole Morr music sound, which I seem to be listening to more and more of lately. Re: [313] The Great White Hype...was IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!
I was trying to find the words to express these exact thoughts below. Thanks for doing it for me :-) jim http://www.assasins.net We can talk about the machine and how it effects us until we are blue. I think it's obvious that we know who the demons are here..it's just a matter if you make it your choice to challenge them on a daily basis or you are one to choose your battles. For me, the most important things I get out of these discussions is the lesson to question things that seem a bit too easy and try and kick the machine as often as possible. I don't think it will ever be broken (though maybe when we get a black, female US president) but at least it personally feels good to challenge it as much as can, as often as I can. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Stright from their webpage: The company was founded, among others, by the Berlin-based computer music project Monolake in fall 1999. Since their beginning in 1995, Monolake have always written their own programs to realize their vision of sound and structure. They have performed live electronic music in clubs and concert halls around the globe, so it comes as no surprise that Ableton's first product offers a solution for live performance. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Anyway, to get to my point, when I stopped in recently... the clearance bin I knew was gone! They still have a section of cut-outs, but it does not provide the 313 addict with any material. I can only guess that they may have decided to discard the old material. Oh well... years before this sad occurrence I was feeding my vinyl habit at Bent Crayon. [313] New Tracks
Greetings All, Just a quick note to let you know that I have two new tracks available at http://www.assasins.net the first track is entitled Tabla Jam. It is a collaboration between myself and John C. It is a very long (24 minutes,) and almost meditative track. I know that the size of this file will not be good for those on modems, but you should be ble to stream it ok. If interested, email me privately and I will burn a CD. I'm quite proud of this track, so please let me know what you think! The second track is unagi. It is a bangin' techno track in the style of Utility Plastics. I experimented with several parts of the song falling in and out of time with each other. The track is hard, but still remains lighthearted. thanks jim - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I suspect that he used electrix' repeater a bit as well. The perfect tool for loopoopooping, I've already heard people slag on this CD. People aren't happy when Hawtin's bangin', and they aren't happy when he's minimal and (imho) funky. No winning is there? jim I listened to the cd once online (i was real icky about listening to it more than that, since i prefer to support the artists), and i really enjoyed it. The only track 'sample' i could pick out right away was spastik, and well, its hard to miss that one. It was a difficult cd to classify (as we humans love to do); deep at times, downtempo at times, house at times, but i don't remember any 'hard' moments. You can tell that hawtin has really gotten into using sonic foundry's ACID program. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The repeater allows one to edit loops on a pee cee or mac, and then drop the sound files onto smart media. From that point syncing, stretching, pitch shifting, etc can all sync up to midi. Pretty schweet. I'm the somebody: hopefully the encoding for this doesn't get messed up. If it does, i'll re-edit it. and not really feeling argumentative, if you don't agree that's fine with me: http://www.bobmarley.com/life/musicalinfluences/punkyreggae/ Well, Bob was influenced by punk at least. and the show the brought the connection to light for me on pbs: The Ramones, Patti Smith, Talking Heads and Blondie light a fuse in America that explodes in London with the cynical inner-city punk spirit of the Sex Pistols and The Clash. Sharing a sense of alienation and rebellion, they champion the Bob Marley-led reggae movement. - http://www.pbs.org/cgi-registry/whatson/template.cgir?s=WVIZt=2p=1490c=d; d=2001-08-13 Punk explores two late `70s musical innovations that shaped rock and roll through the next decade: punk and reggae. In New York, members of Blondie, Talking Heads, Television, and the Ramones tell how they inadvertently created the cynical, urban, stripped-down sound that became punk rock. In London, punk takes off with the Sex Pistols, and members of the Wailers and the Clash recall how Jamaican reggae, another musical form of rebellion, crossed international boundaries, deeply influencing punk and pop rock. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/rocknroll/rnrtv.html By combining a punk attitude with the rhythms of reggae - a musical import from Jamaica popularized by Bob Marley - bands like the Police, the Pretenders and Elvis Costello and the Attractions created a hybrid that proved both infectious and commercially acceptable in a way that hardcore punk was not. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/rocknroll/rnrpunk.html The Sex Pistols had broken up the previous year and the Clash were considered the standard bearers of Punk. The concerts were the scathing attacks of fury that had earned the group its reputation as a high energy concert draw. The band returned to the UK after the tour to begin writing for their new album to be produced by Guy Stevens who had produced the Clash's demos for Polygram in 1977. So much material had been recorded that the album was set to be a double. (Time is Tight a Booker T cover the band had been playing since 1977 was recorded for the LP but was not included). The title song was released in advance of the album (the album's working title was the New Testament) with the flip side Armagideon Time. That song hadbeen a reggae hit for Jamaican singer Wille Williams in 1978, but the Clash's version was so far superior to the original it has since become to be associated with the band as their song. http://members.aol.com/secretsun3/history.html Roxane by the police came out in 1978, well before the 1988 date you cite. Then there's always regatta de blanc in 1979, walking on the moon. I guess it really does all come down to one's definition of punk after allbut I think there is enough evidence of cross-polination. and no, I am not iggy pop. jim http://www.assasins.ner Somebody wrote: ~~ Well, Back in the day Detroit had a largish punk scene. The only influence Dub and Reggae may have had on punk is the message they tried to get across. Ska was directly influenced by the rhythms and sounds of Dub and Reggae as is apparent in the music, however Ska-punk cross pollination really didn't happen until about '88 when Operation Ivy hit the scene. Unless you consider The Specials and The English Beat 'punk', I'd really like to know where you got this idea. Without him might hardcore and drum bass never been realized? I haven't wanted to get social sciency on the list...but I have questions about this. Are we making a distinction between primary and secondary influences? It seems to me that a primary influence--like Mojo--would have to be an influence that is direct. I listen to Mojo ergo I am influenced. I listen to Kraftwerk, ergo I am influenced. It also seems to me that a secondary influence--like the Jamaican one here--would have to be an influence that is INdirect. Kool Herc created the breakbeat...some disco DJ picked up this and influenced someone in Chicago...who happened to spin while Derrick May was working in a record store. Herc is an influence then...but not a primary influence. peace lks - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Unfortunately, the black hole known as Force Inc has claimed yet another producer... Errr? Gez has been quite prolific over the past several years. [313] repeater info and link
http://www.axemusic.com/links/manufacturers/menu_links/electrix_home.htm Repeater is the next step in the evolution of loop-based music production. To the studio musician, it gives a power to arrange audio that was normally reserved for MIDI. Live musicians can safely sample and integrate loops into their performance with almost no learning curve. Repeater's algorithms are tailored to making the looping process simple and intuitive. NEW! Download the Repeater Manual and take a deeper look into its features (PDF file requires Acrobat Reader). This is a Public Beta Manual with facts and figures subject to change in final product. Repeater Features... -Loop Point AssistT algorithm takes the tedious pre-production work away from creating the perfect loop. Loop on the fly! -High quality pitch shifting and time stretching algorithms gives you creative control over a loops tempo and pitch. Completely change the loop's vibe with a few control tweaks. -Audio Beat Detection automatically syncs recording and playback to any rhythmic audio source, such as a sample CD, vinyl, or a kick drum. -Intuitive interface means a short learning curve so you are having fun and being creative faster. -Repeater has an 8-minute (40 MB) loop limit. That's larger than any other hardware, looping device. -Repeater can have up to 99 loops with 4 tracks per loop. -Control the level, pan, pitch and position of individual tracks. -Independently Slip each track position much like you would in a software multi track application like a ProTools or Cubase. -The overdub feature lets you build multi-layered loops on each of the 4 tracks. -Resample lets you bounce 4 tracks to 1 or 2 and re-record effects into the loop. -Overdub regeneration lets Repeater act like a very long delay line. -The undo function lets you experiment, overdub, edit and record without the fear of destroying your work. -Reverse play and record adds new creative possibilities to your work. -Double loop multiplies the recorded loop allowing you to create a bed for overdubbing a longer phrase. -The front panel trim controls allow you to easily edit the start and end points of your loop. Memory -Carry your performance in your pocket! Front loading Compact Flash media gives Repeater virtually unlimited memory expansion. Repeater comes bundled with a 16 MB Compact Flash card to complement the 8 MB internal memory. 24 MB means 4.5 track minutes. -The largest single card available (as of this writing) is 256 MB or 49 minutes of uncompressed audio. Need more memory? Just swap cards. (read more about the Compact Flash media) -Purchasing the optional Sandisk ImageMate gives Repeater Mac and PC compatibility (suggested retail $29). The ImageMate sits on your desk and acts like a removable disk drive, treating the flash memory card like a diskette. Drag and drop files to your hard drive and back. Record loops on Repeater and transfer them onto your computer for integration into your recording software. (read more about the ImageMate) File Format -Repeater records uncompressed WAV files giving you high quality audio that is compatible with other environments. Remote Control -Any TRS style 3-button foot controller (like a Digitech FS-300) gives foot control over play/stop, record and tap tempo. -Repeater can be operated from a MIDI foot controller for Hands Free use. -Full MIDI control also means you can sequence your loops to create complete song structures. -MIDI keyboard control over the pitch offers real-time manipulation over the sample. Experiment with melodic variations of the loop. I/O -Repeater's digital out means easy integration into the digital studio environment. -The High quality Phono Preamp makes it's easy to sample from vinyl. -Repeater's stereo Insert lets you integrate any effects unit into your loop. Assign the insert to individual tracks, the output or the input of Repeater, all from the front panel. -Repeater can be configured for Individual track outputs. -Repeater's front panel instrument input and headphone output means, plug and play looping. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

my original message didn't come through. Re: [313] jak
Hello all, This was the best party i've been to in years! I met a fellow 313 member on the people mover, which made me happy, and the night only got better- despite everyone bum rushing the doorI left about 6:30 am, and you could literally still hear the party 5 blocks away! He threw down some nice funky stuff, and that twisted version of nitzer ebb was amazing. Not to mention: I called you- but you weren't there and Don't worry, I won't hurt you... The price loop just about made me go completely ballistic. Other than Jak: Kenny Larkin's set was immaculate. Kit Clayton impressed me way more than Autechre. John Acquaviva dropping that track (what is it) which made the sun come out :-). Seeing Laurent do 'Acid Eiffel' live. D. Wynn's set (except for the damn m.c.) Regrettably I missed Fred Giannelli's set.sigh... Overall a great festival, but I do wonder whether or not it can retain its' integrity next year. jim - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, May 29, 2001 2:00 PM Subject: [313] jak In response tot he inquiry about jak, it was insane! [313] afterparties
Hello all, Please accept my apologies in advance, as my digest subscription was on the fritz for a while and I've just been able to re-subscribe. So,other than Motor, what afterparties are going on over demf weekend (I hear groans)? I'll be coming up with a bunch o' people from cleveland. Is there a 313 mate grate, or meet and greet? just in case you can find out what I look like here: http://brainwashed.com/coil/images/live/coil-jim-steve.jpg I'm the one with the *very* red eyes and beer. thanks, jim - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
New Tracks
Greetings All, Please forgive my non-participation in the list lately. The work demon has given me no peace :-). However, I do have two new tracks to make up for my lack of participation. The first is called Morticia, which is a slow and spooky track along the lines of Hallucination LXV. The second I finished quite some time ago, but haven't announced. It's called Foundation, and is a bit more dancefloor oriented. I would appreciate it if you could take a minute or 13, and check the new tracks out. Also, I now have a new website as mp3.com decided to charge a premium price for slack ass service: http://www.ampcast.com or http://www.assasins.net thanks! jim
mea culpa
greetings again all, I realized this morning that I uploaded the wrong mix of 'morticia.' If you have the patience to check it out again, you will be rewarded with a smoother mix and a new synth line. My apologies for posting twice, but I'd rather have people hear the track in mostly finished form instead of a very rough mix. thanks jim the embarrased
Re: [313] I need to vent for a moment...
Or just get a macintosh. :-) jim (sorry, couldn't resist) I run a P3 733MHz with 128Mb of ram and have never ever had a recording failure, but the average problems are clipping and defragmentation. I use a 20GB partitioned drive and send all audio to the non-OS partition. You should always up your system virtual memory and never point it to your OS partition. This is accomplished through the System Icon under the Control Panel. I would also recommend getting all the Windows updates for Win98, and regularly look for more. Uncle Microsoft is still pulling it apart and fixing problems inherent in the DOS layer. Cheers todd
Re: [313] re: demf
Yikes! I knew it went up, but I didn't know it went up *that* much. FWIW the rooms were $150 last year. Every room I've ever stayed in there, has a hide-a-bed as well as the number of beds you order. So it is good for large groups of people jim In case anyone is curious...I called the Athenium and found out that a room with 2 queen beds is $270/night. yes i have too much time on my hands today... O/T RE: MAX
Greetings all, This is rather ironic as I just downloaded the demo version of max on saturday...The user tutorial alone is 250 pages long. You can do some incredible things with this piece of software, and at least in the beginning it relatively strightforwars, but alas I think it would take me a year at least to get the fundamentals downsigh Looks like my next purchase is gonna be reaktor (and a new mac to run it, argh!!!) jim
Repetitive music
Greetings, This quote just came over to me from the Coil list. It was so damn funny, I just have to forward it. The original author's name was not included, so I can't give proper creditanyway here goes: Computer games don't affect kids, I mean if Pacman affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive music. http://www.mp3.com/zarathustra http://www.assasins.net

convextion
Greetings All, I recently picked up Derrick May's latest mix up cd, and it featured a classic track that I was never able to ID from Convextion. This track absolutely floors me every time i hear it. From what I can tell, it looks like they had 2 releases out of detroit back in 96-97Does anyone have any more info on these guys? out. jim p.s. FWIW, I have 2 new tracks up on mp3.com. The first is called formula (1), and the second is nox-turnal-transmissions. If you have a chance, please check them out and let me know what you think. I could use a little constructive criticism...the link is below. http://www.mp3.com/zarathustra http://www.assasins.net
Re: [313] err...
Fred- Are you buying it? I got in a rather lengthy discussion over a few beers this past weekend on this topic. Admittedly, I have more than just a slight buzz going at the time but..After about an hour or so discussing the ford focus commerical I came to the following conclusion: 1.)Hooray for Juan, the man has skills and talent. He deserves recognition. 2.)This is a sad day for Detroit Techno. Whether we like it or not, it's been co-opted. I will always love this music, it's a part of my blood. I'm just left with a lingering question: What now? out jim http://www.mp3.com/zarathustra http://www.assasins.net
GENESIS P-ORRIDGE
Hello all, Not to burst anyone's bubble here, but word has it that his performances as 'thee majesty' are well...ass. Caveat emptor. The throbbing gristle and ptv back catalogues are so good it just makes me wish he would give up and retire already. though he does look quite like the english school marm in drag out jim I know there are a few out there in 313 land, who would be extremely interested in this event! Tracks
Greetings All, I have a couple of tracks available for streaming at http://www.mp3.com/zarathustra that I am slating for my first release. The track names are hallucination lxv, and sufi twilight. I'd appreciate it if people would check them out let me know what they think. Please be forewarned, some of the other tracks up there are decent, but some of them are certainly less than stellar. thanks in advance for your input, jim
