Re: [313] Betr.: [313] 313 rumor...

Re: [313] not black enough
when I say rhythm I 'm talking about rhythm as a focal point versus melody. That is an African musical concept. And if it's Latino influenced that's still African. Where do you think they get their stuff from??? Rhythim is Rhythim, Five
Re: [313] I saw the future...
NEVER.
Re: [313] Old UR album
I'd be interested to buy one of these Five
Re: [313] Juan Atkins....
whether Juan Atkins has a drug problem or not is none of our business and has nothing to do with his music. This list about music, not people's personal problems. and if a great musician does have a problem, what are the fans supposed to do??? corner Miles Davis after the show and give him a speech or do a fan based intervention Most of us on this list don't even know him and if we did we wouldn't be spreading gossip on some weblist. It's none of our business and quite irrelavent. grossed out Five
Re: [313] not black enough
American radio just like everything in America is divided into White and Black. Detroit Techno is not considered Black because it is not embraced by Vibe magazine or programmed onto R B station formats. Rock and Roll is seen as a white music even though its innovators are Black ;Chuck Berry, Ike Turner, and others. So that a Black rock, funk and roll band like Fishbone (all Black band) can not be sold to the public by most marketing departments at major labels because they don't know how to sell this Black band doing white music. Wynton Marsalis (Black) is a superb Classical musician and a mediocre jazz player. When he won grammies one year for the best jazz and classical albums the people who run Jazz at Lincoln Center (New York CIty Jazz Program) gave him charge over that program. The implication is that they would rather have a Black man in charge of Black music like jazz instead of a White music like classical. Comprendre Five

Rare Records
hi all: I'm looking for some rare house records, does anybody have any good sources for this type of thing thank you, Five
Stupid Question
Hello All: I am a native Detroiter. I love all the 313 artists that we talk about on this list. I am sad, jealous, and frustrated that everywhere else in the world gets to attend parties Djed' by these marvelous artists except those of us actually in the 313 I know that it's about radio, and major label support here in the US, for artists to succeed. But I refuse to accept the way things are now for what they will be from now on I love all kinds of music; Afrobeat, house, RB, rock, jazz, P-Funk and a little reggae. But why can't I go out right here in Detroit and see Moodymann??? The DEMF was an anomaly, and unfortunately I wasn't here for that but I did download lots of the archived webcasts (big-ups to Groovetech). But I know in the beginning Techno was something that lots of Black kids enjoyed at places like the Music Insititute. I never went but I got into house a few years later (Ken Collier). Now when I go see Derrick May at Motor it's mostly white kids with glowsticks. Now that's cool but I don't like the way it seems this music is marketed as being white and I know that has a lot to do with the bullshit at places like Vibe magazine. Then the Black kids think that techno is it Black enough like house??? I mean I understand if you just prefer house but it seems that lots of people are not even open to techno. It's like a lot of people black out on the fact that Ron Trent's biggest record Altered States was actually rooted in Detroit Techno??? See Juan Atkins' interview in URB millenium future issue. I just find the way things are to be kind of strange. It's just music made you to heal your body when you move??? and yet having a good party here is like finding a needle in a haystack. I went to Queens on Decks last night at the State Theater. The women played well, although I missed Dj Genesis. But no one was there But I also notice that with some not all white crowds, Derrick and others turn into a spectacle; i.e. there is more watching th edj by the sidelines rather than dancing. This music is for everyone and maybe if these media outlets weren't so full of it, we could all be at these parties together, like right here in Detroit. I'm really sad about the way it is in Detroit right now, but I will keep buying the records and going to the events. anybody have any thoughts they wanna share on this??? Peace, Five
Re: [313] ?
I agree with that. Derrick May says in the Innovator linear notes that Duke Ellington's music was the techno of its day. Five
Re: [313] the creator
yes Omar Bin Hassan (The Last Poets) did not record that speech.
Last Night
I missed Mike, but Theo and Kerri were good. But the crowd left a lot to be desired. We talked about this record before that Theo played at the DEMF. It's called I Can't It and it is his new record which he said will be out in two weeks (counting the days). I'm looking forward to Wednesday but I hope the crowd is more lively.

Re: [313] (relatively) unknown detroiters
I could be wrong be these guys are pretty well known??? What does the list think? On that note do you have have Kenny Dixon Jr. records in stock? if not when do you get the re-stock whic location are you at?
Re: [313] (relatively) unknown detroiters
Double Big-Ups to the Groovetech people. They captured history and made media history in the process of streaming it. but yes, I feel that outside of us on the list or dance music lovers in general I am learning that these artists are largely unknown. This is why the person who works at Record Time's post was interesting to me because I assumed (never do that) that these creators were widely recognized. Especially customers at Record Time in Roseville. But I must remember that was just some of us in the dance music room there. Peace, Five
Re: [313] Moodymann: Forevernevermore

Re: [313] women and electronic music
don't know anything aboutt DJ Rap???
Re: [313] R: [313] women and electronic music
BIOLOGICAL bullshit. From just reading the list, there are a lot women DJs out there. I haven't heard of all these women but I'm about to log on to the sisterdjs.com list. The music industry like everything else is male dominated. That's probably why we/I don't know about these women. They are out there but who's promoting them? KHand had to stop to giving info to this list because sexist men wanted to compete with her gigs. Sexism says that women Djs are not real Djs. Five

Re: [313] Carl Craig/Moodymann in NYC : Opinions?
welll, that's funny you say that about Moodymann and his Princeisms, I took a girlfriend with me who doesn't know this music and she thought he was dramatic and hilarious She also thought the same thing about C.C. I saw a friend there who felt that it should have been held in a smaller venue since it was so conceptual I must admit that I love the music but that I expected more probably because I am caught-up in live performance norms (Prince! Femi Kuti etc.) which is inappropriate because this is a different kind of music. I got one of the records that Moodymann passed out but I haven't played it yet I only stayed for 30 minutes of Carl's set because I had to get-up early in the morning and drive back to Detroit!! but he is dramatic and I liked he light show behind him. I am learning a vocabulary to speak in about these kinds of shows so I hope I've said something worthwhile. But I can say that I LOVE DJ Hannah, she plays soulful disco, techno, R B and house classics. She is one of my favorite DJs and that was my second time hearing her outside of the DEMF archived webcast. now that I'm home, where do I go? and I want some old records ( R B, disco, house, techno)cheap. :-) Peace, Five
Re: [313] Re: Madonna (313 and Broadcast Media)
I have never liked Madonna but I must check these tracks out that you all speak of the best thing was the Masters At Work remix of Erotica which she hated (she said she sounded like a chipmunk) but I will check it out.
Re: [313] Theo Parrish
h I wonder which one it is But I want it. Five
Re: [313] Theo Parrish/Song ID
Please doI'm fiending for this track. Five
Re: [313] 313 and Broadcast Media
it's funny because here in the U.S. lots of people do feel that Jeff Mills or May are not Black music. But then these other places try to erase their ethnicity because techno artists lack the same kind of image as other urban Black music. But Detroit techno is Black. I tell people who are afraid of these records that if they like P-Funk they will like 313 music. It's funny because a nice person on this list sent me an article on Jeff where he talked about the race issue. For them it's like a double-edged sword. And I can understand their frustration because it appears that they are able to succeed outside the U.S. because they are not really Black. but within the U.S. they are not Black enough. Stupid stereotypes and their racist insititutions never go away. I guess that's why hip-hop is so fascinating because even in some very racist countries it is still a desired cultural commodity. So that even though some Asian countries still wonder where Black people hide their tails they still buy Busta Rhymes CDs. disgusted, Five
Re: [313] NYC Events this weekend
what do you want??? what kind of music/activity do you want? Five
Theo Parrish
I know this has been asked before, but the answer was not definitive. What is that song that Theo plays on the second part of his set at the DEMF I Can't take it no more, I can't stand it no more thanks, Five
Re: [313] planet e mix cd stuff
LOL @ cover comment.
Re: [313] LTT-Innerzone
how so you feel that the social history of jazz and techno are similar???
Re: [313] innovation? Re: [313] Let's Talk Techno
when you say the African-American musical tradition, what do you mean specifically?? like elements of this tradition are you referring to Surely there is nothing new under the sun and we could never pinpoint who truly innovated stuff; maybe someone else emphasized rhythm like James Brown but did not have the resources to make the records. I guess elevens and thirteenths already existed but Charlie Parker used them differentlyand the be-boppers formed a nexus. Kodwo Eshun talks about how music is its own genesis and that musical movements can not be relegated to history but, I think it is somewhere in between. I'm still thinking about this one...I don't know that anyone did what Jimi Hendrix did before him but maybe differents artists had ideas but were not able to carry them out. still thinking about why we call people innovators and of course things are always contextual. Five
Re: [313] KDJ
when will it be availible here in the US? WHERE is the best place to get all his stuff, I ask this because people are always talking about how difficult his stuff is to find. Five

Re: [313] Re: anyone know? - urb dont know
Hi all, I USED to be a reader of URB magazine. I think they do have an interest in Future Music Culture but it seems to be White Future Music Culture. It seems to have lots of tidbits about this and that but very white. There is a whole heritage of stuff that should be covered in -depth around this music. I think Derrick described his music as Kraftwerk meets Funkadelic in the elevator. Carl Craig said they wanted to make music that wouldn't be classified as ghetto, funny but Detroit Techno seems to be ghettoized. Like it's something for white people or music obscurists... I don't know It seems to me that the overall lack of American media coverage on Detroit techno has a lot to do with racism. If Juan, Derrick or Kevin were white I really believe them, their work, and things like the DEMF would have more respect. I think the DEMF was a great thing and I just regret that I wasn't there but thank God for archived webcasts. I think the Detroit News gave it its biggest coverage to my knowledge and even some that was suspect. Peace, Five
Jeff Mills
