RE: (313) American Artists overseas

2003-04-09 Thread Greg::Malcolm .
i was in holland for a festival last week, and was treated very kindly by
the dutch ppl i met, they are very anti-bush more than they are
anti-american.

ppl there referred to the US as the empire, and when we landed @ detroit
en route to cleveland, it really seemed like the opening scene out of the
first star wars...ppl were getting up and getting their luggage, when an
announcement came out that US customs agents had entered the plane...they
were armed and had a german shepard, and removed a few middle eastern men,
who were presumably on some kind of country threat list. one was sitting
two chairs down from me...very scary and most of the plane, who were
foreingers were very anxious as well.

Hey,

*I've* been attacked by skinheads - in East Germany! (At least they
attempted to attack me!)

The good thing about skinheads is that they effectively don't discriminate!
They hate everybody who disagrees with them (which is virtually everybody!)

I hope you're right, that American artists are still getting booked.
A good friend of mine who isn't a techno artist was rather frightened
on his last tour in Germany, where he was harrassed by skin heads and
yelled at for being Americans elsewhere.

Here's hoping, all evidence to the contrary, that we're not entering a
new

dark age.

On Wed, 9 Apr 2003, Odeluga, Ken wrote:
 American artists are less welcome
in Europe given the current troubles.

Current US/European political agreements aside, I can't see how
this would
contribute to US artists of any kind being overlooked for bookings
here.

In 'big business' (the ugly specter of which I raise, just for
the sake of a
comparison and an example) long-term well-known relationships
are as normal
with no question of wider considerations altering that.

The only thing that's hurting everybody (inlcuding all types of music)
is

 the global economic slowdown.

[313] CLEVELAND:BUNKER RECS TOUR TONIGHT:9/12

2002-09-12 Thread Greg::Malcolm .

Thursday Sept 12th
Cleveland, Ohio
Experimedia Communications : Headroom Digital : The Bent Crayon
Present:

THE DIRTY BROWN AND MISERABLE WORLD TOUR
BUNKER RECORDS
DEN HAAG, HOLLAND
http://www.electro-funk.com/
A disco dystopia where nihilism is poised to overthrow hedonism. Imagine a
soundtrack for cities ceding control to filthy thoughts and seedy impulses
-- broadcast in a declining discotheque decorated with visual expressions of
urban decay.

One of only 4 dates in the US!

FEATUREING
A showcase of the pioneers of the Dutch Electro scene : Bunker Records
http://www.experimediacommunications.com/bunker.htm
click for on-line flier.

LEGOWELT (Live)Leading the descent into decadence is Legowelt (aka Danny
Blanco), who fuses sexual obsession with electro-funk, the requisite amount
of Kraftwerk and a healthy punk sneer.
ORGUE ELECTRONIQUE (Live)Orgue Electronique (aka Brian Chinetti) produces
minimalist and raw electro-funk, causing you to flashback to your worst
teenage high school parties, eliciting unpleasant memories where everybody
but you was enjoying themselves.
Together, they are Legowelt Orgue Electronique, the pride of Bunker
Records, an independent label formed in 1992 in Den Haag, Holland.

TLR (DJ)
SCHMERZLABOR (DJ)
Also joining the decadent fray are internationally renowned DJs Schmerzlabor
(Unit Moebius/Acidplanet) and TLR (Mr. Clavio) (Bunker/Crème Organization).
Schmerzlabor is accurately rendering the human tragedy and euphorically
leading you into his post-nuclear minimalist dirty-brown dystopia, where
booty-shaking freaks, punks and junkies reign supreme! TLR, meanwhile,
balances the dark yin of Schmerzlabor with his hedonistic yang, a loud and
proud philosophy encapsulated by his only motto, to rock the house.

[313] CHICAGO:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:8/24

2002-08-19 Thread Greg::Malcolm .

LIVE @ THE DEADTECH GALLERY
3321 W. Fullerton Ave Chicago IL 60647 : http://www.deadtech.net

A night of fine electro-organic experiments and dance-floor feet shuffling.

Saturday August 24th, 9pm...$5 Admission.

FEATURING:

TWINE/PHASE4
Hefty : Bip-Hop Records
Urban Mag describes the Twine/Phase4 performance, “With its intricate
colors, abstract shapes and organic texture, the video seems like a visual
equivalent of Twine’s music…the work of Phase4 is based on similar ideas
that are being used in so much music: de(con)struction, abstraction,
decontextualisation...”.

GREG DAVIS
Autumn : Carpark Records
Carpark is certain that arbor is the harbinger of a new type of music we
like to think of as laptop folk. Not to be confused with the genre
folktronica, laptop folk’s aim is to integrate the digital and analog
domains. Whereas previous attempts trivialized or treated the electronic
element as a novelty, arbor makes no musical hierarchy. At the beginning
of this new century…”

WARMDESK
Deluxe : Fallt Records
The sound of warmdesk, aka Bill Selman, combines dense, noisey harmonics and
dub-like bass with rhythmic patterns and samples from everyday life. the
desire is to create a multi-faceted spray of sound grounded by a pulse of
polyrhthmic beats (not too far from minimal techno and tech-house).

CRAQUE
Craque is one Matthew Ross Davis, a Chicago based experimental electronic
musician. Opi8 describes his music as “blunted, spastic electro beat, too
fast for the chords trying to keep up with it, too juddering for the
rubber-earthquake dub bassline that rumbles up out of the depths a few
minutes in. It's stratospheric, rocket-fueled experimental dub.”

M.MERCER
409 : Forte Records
Classically trained on the organ and piano from an early age, Matt Mercer
has been producing music for years, starting in a more ambient/experimental
vein and moving more and more into a four on the floor tech-house sound.
Bits and pieces of anything and everything flit in and out of the mix,
recontextualized, reorganized, reenergized for the dancefloor.

This just in: webcasters can breathe a sigh of relief as common sense and
good taste has won out over stuffed suits and greased pockets--CARP has
been

rejected . If you weren't aware of it, CARP would have imposed exorbitant
fees on webcasters, effectively killing webcasting radiostations, or at
least preventing them from playing all (American) copyrighted music. See
our previous story, or saveinternetradio.org , or read through the
Copyright
Office page linked above for background information. I wouldn't rejoice
just
yet - while webcasters argued that the proposed rates were way too high,
the

RIAA argued that they were way too low. There will still be royalty rates
set by the Copyright Office, and the final rates may not be anything to
cheer about.

[313] :KRAAK3 Fest Review:

2002-03-22 Thread Greg::Malcolm .
just got this KRAAK3 festival review of my set translated from flemish in
case any of you are interested...

The American duo Twine made their first appearance in Europe, and one
could sure tell. With an almost childlike enthusiasm they took pictures of
anything that moved even slightly, and with each concert they were nodding
along with twinkling eyes.

When it comes to music, they certainly are not second to any of their
colleagues: Circulation (which came out on Komplott last year) is a
brilliant exploration of sounds and structures, inspired both by the
experimental electronica and the electro-acoustic compositions of
Stockhausen and alike; a well-considered and organic game of acoustic and
electronic sounds, intangible vocals and ambient atmospheres.

This year, there's new work coming out on labels like Bip-Hop and Hefty, and
we already got a sneak preview [at the festival]. First conclusion: beats!
Whereas on Circulation they were almost consequently avoided, their live set
was full of mutated and abstract beats, that indeed gave the whole a bit
more punch but at the same time limited the subtleties. What was left was a
strong set of glitch, though lacking the innovative architecture that made
their album so overwhelming. Yet still: powerful and promising. Yours to
discover!

the full festival review can be found here, it also has pics from the fest:

Re: [313] todd sines.

2002-03-19 Thread Greg::Malcolm .
here is the bio that todd sent me, i'm sure his discog is on the ele_mental
site someplace, or you can check at discogs.com

GM/Twine

warning very long.

pics: http://www.scalestudio.com/pics/18todd_sfca.jpg
http://www.scalestudio.com/pics/19todd_sfca2.jpg

the long bio...

Todd Sines was born on 17 July, 1973 near Cleveland, Ohio. At the age of 4
he imitated Ace Frehley from Kiss, danced to Chuck Berry, and was an avid
Star Wars addict. He determined at age 5 that he wanted to he an architect,
astronaut, or artist. Or some combination of all three.

His interest in music began with his affinity for hip hop in 1983. Artists
such as Whodini, Newcleus, and The Art of Noise served as the inspiration to
follow music more closely. In 1987 he started his own 'zine dedicated to
freestyle bmx, skateboarding, and music, through which he gained exposure to
artists such as Kraftwerk, Skinny Puppy, Cocteau Twins, Sonic Youth, Big
Black, Cabaret Voltaire, Wire, Einsturzende Neubauten, Can, and This Mortal
Coil. Exposure to the label 4AD and Nettwerk sparked his interest in design
+ cinema, and he began to follow his career in art + graphic design by 1988.
In 1990, he started a few bands with friends from high school and started to
make early recordings with limited domestic electronic equipment. A friend
turned him on the early Biorhythms compilations which featured Detroit
luminaries such as Juan Atkins, Jay Denham, Derrick May, and Carl Craig.
After seeing 808 State for the first time on MTV, and hearing these tracks
from Detroit, he decided that he wanted to produce electronic music, and
moved to Columbus, Ohio with his friend Mike Szewczyk from the Cleveland
area. Through his 'zine, he made his first connection with Detroit's Mad
Mike + Jeff Mills in his interview + reviews for Visual Razorblade.

In the fall of 1991 he and Mike started a project called Body; highly
influenced by the danceable, yet raw sounds of LFO + Meat Beat Manifesto. In
Columbus he ran into Titonton Duvante at a record store [who was purchasing
the new 808 State + LFO singles]; it was that day that the connection was
formed. Later that week, he ran into Charles Noel and the 4 agreed to start
producing music as Body Release. Todd sold his bass guitar for a used Roland
SH-101 and contributed to the production of b|re. Several gigs ensued over
the next two and a half years, ranging from Cleveland, Chicago, Cincinnati,
Ft. Wayne, and Dayton.

After the group decided to call it quits in 1993, the individuals redirected
their efforts to their own productions and also harness their DJing skills.
Titonton started to write his own music [and released later on fellow Ohio
producer Dan Curtin's Metamorphic label]; Charles Noel started probably the
first Columbus techno label; 21/22 Corporation. A legendary meeting at a
rave in Cincinnati with Brian Gillespie + Jon Santos formed the crucial
Detroit connection for these producers. Soon thereafter they were trading DJ
slots between Detroit and Columbus; Paris Mack, Billeebob, Claude Young, and
Brian Gillespie would travel down for several successful parties through the
collaborative group of the three, plus Ed Luna, as ele_mental, in Columbus.
Todd Sines would DJ and have Charles + Todd play live as ARS at many of the
Poor Boy events.

Through this connection of Brian, Paris, and Jon, Todd met his favorite
Detroit producers' Carl Craig + Dan Bell and DJed at some of the same events
in Detroit. Both were interested in the different styles of Todd's music;
the stripped down minimal tech house funk as _.xtrak_ interested DBX for a
release on his newly recharged 7th City label. Carl was interested in the
more melodic sounds Todd was producing for the elements of and experiments
with sound compilation as _enhanced_. Through Dan, Todd's material was sent
over to Peacefrog Records, where his first solo release appeared in the
beginning of 1995. A series of releases on a handful of European and
domestic US labels turned attention to the musical output of Todd, Charles,
Titonton, and Columbus in general.

Since playing several DJ gigs + live PAs over the midwest from 1993-1996, he
put things on hiatus during his brief touch with marriage... and then
resurfaced in the music scene [after his separation] in late 1999 with his
Hi8Us LP release. It appeared on the newly formed label from fellow
producer Titonton and his partner Thomas James, Residual Recordings. Over
the last 2 years he has released new material on Germany's Background
Records, tracks on the 21/22 Corp's ele_ments of light CD, and composed
soundtracks for film intros, commercials, short independent films, and sound
design for web, video, film + CDROMs. He has forthcoming releases + remixes
on the highly mysterious [and respected] Miami label, Beta Bodega,
Background, and Residual. He is the director of his own design + effects
studio, SCALE, with other collaborators in the design,

i am fortuneate enough to live only a few miles away from the BC, easily the
best store for experimental electronic/techno that i have ever been too.

john c knows his shite too, which is a BIG plus vs going to stores where the
ppl are either too cool to talk to you, or don't know what they are talking
about, or sometimes both.

i agree though he needes to update his site more often...last time i looked
he still had a link to the audio from a V/VM show from about two years ago
or something like that.

Bent Crayon is cool, ghetto ordering system last I ordered...have to phone
them with your payment info...and they don't always have what they say they
have but as far as getting what you do pay for, they're A-Ok in my
books.shipped alot quicker than most stores (well except for
groovetech)

Ever order from them? Can you give me feedback? They have a lot of
titles/labels/artists that Groovetech doesn't or is out of stock on so
I'd

like to order from BC but would like the peace of mind. Please respond
directly to me and off list.

 Thanks

Yeah Todd's set was very cool and the visual accompaniment was a soothing
relief from the Bacardi logos.

Anyone know what software he uses for his visual editing? Also, if anyone
knows of other visual/video artists doing similar work I'd be interested in
knowing about them.

[313] CEX:SAE:CLEVELAND SHOW REVIEW 7/22

2001-07-23 Thread Greg Malcolm

i have to say, that i had my doubts, but after last night i have to agree
with the camp that says that Cex is brilliant.

the show was part of the :transmit: series in cleveland OH, unfortunately
only about 30-40 ppl made it out, and it was very muggy inside SIT, the
venue...but the brave ppl who ventured out late on a sunday night were most
def rewarded with an awesome line-up and sets.

starting off the night was la-plage aka frank masura...la-plag's set started
off with the pretty obligatory glitch+breaks hyper rythmn, not to say that
this is a bad thing for sure...when done well, it sounds great, and it was
done well by frank. his set lasted about 30-40 mins and as it went on, it
became much more randon and elastic in nature, i was very impressed with the
feel and execution of the entire set, especially the last half, expect good
things from this guy.

next was stars as eyes, i did not know what to expect from these guys as i
have heard little, but these two gentlemen equally impressed me...very
melancholy like fizzarum, but tighter on the rythmn side...their use of
melody and beats and bass ranks right up there with BOC etc...

next up was cex aka ryan kidwell, like i said i knew i was expecting
something, what exactly i was not sure...ryan started right off by starting
his i-book sequence and invading the crowds space, most of the ppl reacted
bybpulling back at first, but once things got going all were lured into
cex's set. i have to say that his performance is much more powerful than
his recordings as most good music is...his set was one part IDM, one part
hip-hop, one part rock, one part performance art, executed brilliantly.

the highlight of his set was the freestyle jam, at the end...he asked the
crowd for some subject matter, and began to weave and incredibly funny and
dense topographical story around the pretty obnoxious and incongruent themes
that the audience gave him to work with. cex gets an a for taking command
of the stage, and getting the audience involvved activly vs passively. also
he is a very nice guy.

the IDM rulebook is getting pretty thick and it was great to see some-one
disregard it. hopefully ppl will be able to make some room for cex and like
acts in the future, as i see this style of IDM being the most
embraceable by a larger audience in the near future. it's not for
everyone thats for sure, but i think there is room for everyone's distinct
take on the music that we all love.

also kudos to DJ T Knight for spinning some pretty dope beats, i have not
heard dr octogon or cypress hill in years!!

and phase 4 and wes rock the visuals as usual.

anyhow just my two cents

GM

Re: [313] more political crap from me (OT) - Bush

2001-05-04 Thread Greg Malcolm
this is not a matter of speculation either, it is a fact on public
record...you only need to care to look.

GM

Actually, it is not a weird conspiracy thing. The Bush family has stong
ties

with the American Intelligence Community, George Herbert Bush was Director
of the CIA in 1970, and had ties with the bay of pigs invasion through his
oil holdings. The republican presidential campaigns from 1980-92 were run
by

ex-CIA spooks. George Herbet was a member of the Skull and Bones society at
Yale...

If you really examine the American Intelligence Community's involvement
with

national politics since Truman allowed the OSS to become the CIA in 1945,
there have been some interesting shananigans. You can marginalize someones
interest in these issues as conspiracy mongering, but if you actually look
at it, some serious questions are raised. The CIA is a huge organization
with a massive budget, that is not accountable to anyone. They are doing
something with all that money...and it goes beyond echlon and carnivore.

Take care,
Mike

Re: [313] DEMF vs. Woodstock

2001-05-02 Thread Greg Malcolm

Woodstock marked the time when the hippies established themselves as a
force. Nobody cared about Country Joe or Jimi Hendrix before that.
Woodstock was amazing because it wasn't planned to be huge while they
were anticipating huge crowds at DEMF.

actually it was at the monterrey pop festival in 1967 where hendrix set his
guitar on fire and then smashed it where he and many of the other emerging
Psychedelic artists gained a wider audience, janis joplin, greatful dead
etc...the oddball out at the monterrey pop fest and IMHO best performer,
otis redding and booker t and the mg's.

Electronic music has already been exploited and torn apart by business
around the world, but Woodstock still had a purity to it.

might be, but woodstock ushered in the era of huge outdoor festivals and
arena rock and eventually prog-rock...music became big business in the
70's...in other words woodstock was the beginning and end of an era.

Also, electronic music still isn't the most popular form of music in the
world unless you're going to try to include RB and Hip Hop in
electronic music.

RB and Rap are the two biggest forms of music by sales volumes anyhow, at
least in this country...sad.

just my two cents

which the other day, my roommate and i saw a sticker that said that on a
NEON. i'm kinda perplexed by that. i am wondering if the guy was being
serious or facetious since i didn't really get much of a look at the
driver. my guess is that since it was in cincinnati, the chance that the
driver actually had a sense of humor is slim to none. :P

getting even further off-topic

I saw a MALIBU the other day... not even a nice malibu, just a crappy
family sedan. And it had a huge chevy sticker in the back and around it
it said bad ass GIRLS drive bad ass toys. First off, your car isn't a

My last post reminded me of something...

I've seen a few live performances in the last few years, the most
impressive of which was Ectomorph's at Solar (The Blind Pig) a couple of
years ago. I've noticed, these days, that more than a few cats are bringing
out laptops and 2 or 3 pieces of gear and running their music from it.
People have told me that seeing Plastikman live was a billy bad assed show,
but I've never seen it. I saw Richie run his DE909 show on New Years Eve
1999/2000 and though it was cool but still expected something better.

What I'm really looking to get is some feedback: Do you prefer the
Ectomorph/Plastikman type of live show or the Laptop/sampler/keyboard type
of thing and why?

I know there was a small discussion a few weeks ago about getting a 313
shirt done for DEMF. I'd be interested in making this happen if there was
enough support from the list to get a good order together. We could
obviously have an open competition to pick a design (entries could be
posted on the net) This would have to happen somewhat soon though so as to
avoid any rush charges tagged on by the printer. I'm in NYC and there are a
lot of folks that could do the shirts for a good price.

I'd like to find out though if this is something worth doing especially
since we have a bit of time to work with before the end of May. Email me
back privately and let me know so as not to swamp the list. I'll post again
in a few days to let you know what the response has been.

burrell, grant green, charlie christian, emmett ray, joe pass, etc...and
only a passing mention of django.

the guitar in jazz simply does not exist in the burns/marsalis' world.

I just realized all the other great artists that are missing from Burns'
version of Jazz... Alic Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Eric Dolphy, Albert
Ayers, George Russell, Roscoe Mitchell, oh man! Burns and Wynton Marsalis
are doing such an injustice to the music, all music.

hey..

i do much the same thing, but i use ACID, it's a much more powerful live pgm
than fruity...you can set your loop region and work on stuff outside, and
then move the loop region over when you are done etc...and you can use up to
eight effects plug-ins and assign an envelop to each sound...i sound like a
commercial for ACID, actually i do freelance work for them (sonic
foundry)...so if you have any questions, ask.

hey guys.

got some personal opinion questions for all of you. i am currantly putting
together a live show and heres the deal on that. i am piecing some
instances

in fruity. around 30 fruity loop songs all worked out with real time
effect-ability. now, what i plan on doing is mixing between two instances
of

fruity loops such as a dj would records. i open up two fruity loop programs
and run each ones sound to a diffrent sound card. from each sound card i
run

a line to a mixer channel. now in doing so it allows me to play one song,
and get another one ready in the next instance of fruity, all while
fiddling

knobs on a phat boy designated to the currant instance. i am currious if
anyone has seen or has done this before. and those of you who just attend
shows rather than create them, does this sound like somthing you could keep
interest in (if the music was of your tastes). any feedback would be
appreciated.

thanks,
mike

Hello everyone!

I've seriously been trying to join this list for about 4 years but
something

always seemed to screw up with my mail server; problem finally solved!

Anyway, my name is Todd Gys. I've been dj'ing deep detroit/berlin minimal
techno for about 6 years now. I'm a big fan of the chain reaction, main
street, maurizio, and basic channel sound, but am also into the more
minimal

stuff like the Studio 1 releases, profan, etc. I'm sure I'll meet some
great people here into the same music.

I recently moved to Boston, MA from Columbus, OH. Quite different out
here;

haven't been able to find many people into the same sound I am. If you're
from the Boston area, I'd love to get in touch and talk music!

Within the last 3 years, I've started to make some of my own tracks. These
days I finally have a fully functional studio up and running and I've been
doing my best to churn out tracks. I'm involved in a few ambient projects
right now, but have a few crunchy minimal tunes on cue to be released.

Anyway, thought I'd drop a line and introduce myself. Anyone out there I
know already?

there was another, much better series, in my opinion, that came out about
3-4 years ago sponsered by the rock and roll hall of fame, and experience
music project, that had an episode dedicated to the perfect beat...it
included hip-hop, techno, house, electro, kraftwerk etc...and interviews
with, derrick may, frankie knuckles, run-dmc, beastie boys, de la soul, new
order, africa bambaata etc...very informative in the general sense,
definately not as centered on the modern electronic music scene as
modulations is.

Is there a gear mailing list on the web for techno/house junkies? Most that
I have seen are in a posting format on websites and seem to be for jungle
or hip-hop musicians. By the way, nothing works quite like an 8-0-8.
But, there is the production tools cd-rom for MPC that gives you every
imagined drum sound in every tone--no real time trweaking however.
Check out rebirth a software synth, or a good outboard module and jack in
the FATBOY midi unit for real time tuning of every parameter...a cost
effective and reliable alternative.

I have to send this to the list because this is an essential thing for me.
i use alot of percussive devices, this is what i use, most of which i take
out live.

Roland TR-808(soon to be modified)
Roland TR-606 x3 (modified by myself)
Roland TR-707 x2
Roland TR-505 x2
Roland Boss DR-110 (modified by myself)
Simmons SDS9
Mattell Synsonics

o.k. call me a nut, but i use about 3/4 of this stuff live and balance it
out by takeing beats in and out like a dj but with live drum devices. i
also alter the beats in write mode live.

My favorite machine has been th TR-606, however i now call mine the TR-666
I
do quite an extensive amount of mods to it which i do offer to the public
at

a reasonable cost. heres what i can do to one:

BD: Tune
BD: Decay
BD: Sweep Amount (triggers f/ext or int)
BD: Sweep Decay

SD: Tune
SD: Decay
SD: Filter
SD: Noise
(Can also do sweeps on this one)

LT: Tune
LT: Decay
HT: Tune
HT: Decay

CY: Filter (Lowpass)
CY: Decay

HH/CY: Filter (HighPass)
HH: Mettalic additive (switchable)
OH: Decay
CH: Decay
HH/CY: Filter Sweep Amount (Triggers via int or ext)
HH/CY: Filter Sweep Decay

Individual Outs
Accent On/Off
HT On/Off
LT On/Off
Fine Tempo Control
L.E.D. Colour replacement: Blue,Green,Yellow,Orange,White

If your interested in seeing the modded 606 and your in Detroit on the
26th,

check us, out we are playing live I will have at least 2 with me. We are
also in cleveland the 20th.

Re: [313] Wanted: TR-808, an alternative

2000-05-16 Thread Greg Malcolm
i have a korg er-1 that i like very much...interesting realtime tweakable
sounds, and the biggest plus...realtime sequencing.

also i hear the quasimidi 309 is very good too...it adds basslines,
monophonic synth sounds, as well as percussion.

I know that this is once again off topic, however if it wasnt for these
devices there would be no 313.

Just curious, in your opinion, of the drum machines being produced today,
which would be a good substitute? Anybody like alesis machines or the emu
orbit?

This artist has some great tracks that are very similar to the style
you list below:

Verbal Kint (who is that, anyway?).
