There were five official versions of the song. The first two were released
in 1987: the famous 7:23 mix called Strings Of Life (Piano Mix) or just
Strings Of Life, and a 6:56 remix called Strings (Flam-Boy-Ant Mix) or
just Strings. In 1989, two new remixes were licensed exclusively to UK
European labels: a Juan Atkins remix called Strings Of Life '89 (Juan's
Magic Mix), and an uncredited remix called Strings of Life (Exclusive
Remix) (issued on a split release http://www.discogs.com/release/61252
with Model 500). In 1991, an 8:23 kick drum-free version titled Strings Of
Life (Unreleased Mix), Strings Of Life (Remix), or Strings Of The
Strings Of Life first appeared, and featured additional production by Carl
Craig Derrick May. This mix was unreleased in the sense that it was new
at the time and was never officially released on a single; only on
compilations. Numerous compilations feature early fades and other
space-saving edits of the original 1987 Piano Mix, the 1989 Exclusive Remix,
 and the 1991 Unreleased Mix.

Everyone is inspired by another artists work at
some point in time, why are you guys making such
a fuss over this one instance?

The distinction is that Wink stands to make quite a lot of money from his
track, while most of the other guys who do tracks that are derivative of Dan
Bell's work just put out obscure 12 that only us weirdos even hear about,
let alone buy. That's what's annoying - the amount of reward Wink gets for a
piece of derivative work is utterly out of scale with the effort and
creativity he's injected into it. No-one would even be speaking about this
if Josh Wink was an unknown, dropping 500 pressings of a DBX-style tune on a
label no-one had heard of.

Maybe it's just envy - perhaps we'd all like a job where all we do is make
lazy, plagiaristic tracks, using a deep pool of underground music to draw
from, and then banking serious cash as the general public flock to our new
and innovative releases. It'd be easy, wouldn't it? I'd make a track that
was a pretty straight copy of Rhythm from Minimal Nation - sampling George
Clinton as well, but programming the main melody line on a Nord Lead and
maybe sticking some 909 rimshots in as well, then wait for the dollars to
roll in while suing everyone who mentions the name Robert Hood on a
message board. Life would be good!

Brendan

RE: [313] some questions

2002-03-27 Thread Joe Marougi

One thing that confuses me, though, is that Derrick May apparently hated
that term, seeing it as something more associated with hip-hop than with the
music they were making. What was that all about? In what context was techno
used to describe hip-hop back then?

This is just a guess, but back when I was dj-ing in high school (86-87) I think
there was an LA label called 'Techno Pop' which released techno tracks
disguised as a form of hip-hop (I think Cli-n-tel was one of the artists with
2030) The artwork on the label was red and yellow...along the same lines of
Surgery (Dr. Dre) and Unknown DJ. Maybe that's what Derrick was referring
to..?

Ahh Windows...I think both sides of that record were pretty dope. I believe
it was Amsterdam too...speaking of Holland, some 'Touche' releases from the
early/mid 90's weren't too bad neither...

The Rabbit City's were fun to play with, along with the kinda unmarked ones
with the drawn robot head that had the light beam purtruding from the forehead.

Oh, and what was that 'Rising High' record with the baby's voice?

It's always a fun journey, isn't it? Even though techno represents a small
percentage of what I have on vinyl, most of what I have is back from the
early 90's (and mainly from Europe). I have a couple of white label
pressings from Rabbit City Records that I loved to play back in the day...
the ones I have are simply labeled Rabbit City 1, Rabbit City 3 and one
or two others as well that I can't remember off the top of my head. Those
make for great personal flashbacks. :) Another one I love to blow the dust
off of on occasion is an import on Rhythm Records (Amsterdam, I think)
called Windows by SIL. M. Closer to home, another one from a few
years back is Pullover by Speedy J, although it's not really a flashback
since I've never quit spinning it. ;)

hi folks. I recall that a number of mailing list members have music
collections that could be considered greater than average. at last count,
i
have upwards of 500 titles. one of the joys that i have discovered as a
result of building such a large collection is what i call the rediscovery
event. on occasion i may choose a title that i haven't given a listen to
in some time. i may not even remember that i had it in my possession.
press play or drop the tone arm... and suddenly you rediscover an engaging
and enthralling piece of electronic, soulful brilliance. a few days ago i
put the needle to arc of blueness by q-moog. lo-fi, high energy soul by
a
 little heard of producer.
i am enthusiastic to hear of other members' encounters with the
rediscovery event. perhaps this is a silly thread in our environment of
heavy issues, but i feel it's time to indulge in the stories surrounding
the great trax we have heard in the past.

Shake's Assimilated 12 from 2000 has never failed to blow my mind.
Not once. I've tried to listen to it casually but it's impossible. It
always grabs me and I have to stare at the speakers or something.

Does frictional have a webpage, by the way?

Definitely. Shake's out on his own and, to my mind, the best example of
techno as modern jazz. Maybe not in sound, but definitely in spirit, which
is more important anyway. I'm still looking for a copy of Waiting For
Russell, so if anyone's got a spare...

[313] 3/7/02 Juan Atkins party in San Francisco

2002-03-15 Thread Joe Marougi
Hi there,

Just a quick note to mention what a great time we all had that night. It was a
pleasure to both play and hear some classic tunes with Juan, and to see him get
such a great reception throughout the night. Hopefully we can experience more
nights like that up here!

Sorry if there has already been a thread on this, I just re-joined the group a
couple of days ago. I also wanna say hello to anyone on this list I may have
met back in the mid 90's when I was with Plug Research...

Joe (Babylon)

oh, and here's the link to the flyer for that night: www.freewebz.com/bsp
