I thought the queues for the cloak room and bar took the piss and why do ticket holders have to que with non-ticket holders? I didn't hear all of Juan Atkins but I wasn't impressed with what I did hear. The 'train-wrecks' were terrible and he didn't even look confident. Was this Juan Atkins or a door man who filled in for him coz he didn't turn up? Thankfully though Derrick May saved the night. What a complete contrast from Juan! May had a lot of energy and his mixing was quite good. I think both of them might have had to battle against poor sound (it was better near the front) no monitors but May was much better and more in control. The test will be if the artists can remain true to themselves and not be manipulated by the majors, who no doubt will be dangling a fat carrot in their faces, hmmm, will they resist? Anyways the album DJ Hell released, Munich Machine on Disko B, was in this vein and an excellent example of techno music. Ididn't see this listed in the article, someone didn't do their homework. At the time I thought it was quiet groundbreaking. Music should be fun, makes you move makes you groove. It certainly is not about a lot of moody blokes skulking in corners nodding their heads, discussing the technical merits and being underground. Perhaps this stuff will make techno heard by many others and thus it can't be a bad thing. Personally I like the stuff DJ Hell has been putting out on his gigolo label, right now I'm listening to that Tiga Mix just out and some tracks are great, some are very tongue in cheek. If this music can inject a bit of fun into the techno scene then I'm sure it'll work outside of it. Time will tell. Good luck to all. I feel the amount of theese influences mentioned here is not in the right relation to the main basis and main source of much of the music - this shows a picture, that is changing the meaning the Ewok-joke was a silly inspiration to question the way of understanding music the English do, which also does have iti?s certain tradition in the line of history... (highlighting the pop-aspect) See, I doni?t want to be over- preachy and I feel much love 4 this house is our house-vision, and am so gratefull this door is still opened by artists though the shit keeps happening all the time - but I think we all do have the responsibility to take care ... much more care ... and that means to enjoy the music and the party of course, to enjoy it 100 %, but as long as I feel things are getting pulled into a certain direction, that seems to be a part of stealing or redefining the 313-culture in a classical colonial tradition, there will be those wrong spelled grammar f***ing preachy mails, and understand, when Ii?m doing the same kind of mistakes please tell me and teach me - shoutz m -- LoveThemPlanetZ peoplez plantz peaze pluz m GMX - Die Kommunikationsplattform im Internet. http://www.gmx.net - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear Sir I think you've had too many bites from those tsetse flies. A second functional purpose may be to express sexual frustration in a positive manner. The alleviated stress ensures the survival of the species through continued procreative capabilities. I personally choose a broader, more spiritual perspective from which to analyze the purpose of life. I've been down many roads, none of them illuminating. From: Rusty Blasco [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] so is it really music? Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2002 13:22:49 -0500 Dictionary definition of music according to Webster (sorry the edition is a little old): 'the art and science of combining vocal or instrumental sounds or tones in varying melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre, especially so as to form structurally complete and emotionally expressive compositions' interesting third definition: 'any rhythmic sequence of pleasing sounds, as of birds, water, etc.' and: 'ability to respond to or take pleasure in music' Music does not have to be melodious. It is merely a contemplated arrangement of sounds for the purposes of communicating emotions. Believe me, debates about what is music vs. what isn't raged in my mind for quite some time during my early college years. Music is most essential when it reflects the environment and society in which it was conceived, hence, the increasing utilization of technological sounds (as an indication of industrial and intellectual advancement). The beauty is in discovering the underlying human thoughts and feelings which comprise the core of a piece and subsequently a moment in time. The subjective experience of music (art in general) protects it from the myopic qualifications which critics (amateur and professional alike) impose upon it. Our desire to create music stems from a desire to convey our deepest emotions in a way words themselves can't oblige. It is a means to transcend our physical limits. Here I will halt though I could probably compose a thesis on said subject. Comments? When you know the effort and thought that has gone into a composition you can't help but admire the individuals or person that created the piece. Question is a piece of music as valid knowing the creator/s are doing it to make a quick killing or are the struggling musicians out there the true music makers? Blimey what a heavy composition! Re: [313] 2001 gems
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] 2001 gems Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2002 08:11:21 -0800 As it's still near the beginning of the year, I thought that this is still a relevant topic. Over the last few weeks there have been loads of lists in magazines, net etc. with top lists of 2001. While I don't slavishly go out and buy all the top 10 records, I do find these useful to check I haven't missed anything major which I should have bought. I bought Cannibal Ox The Cold Vein the other day, which has turned out to be really interesting musical hip hop (although I'm not a big fan of the genre). Has anyone any comments on this album, or any albums which they resisted buying / didn't hear about all year, and have now bought, and recommend.
