[313] Re: [truevibes] Joe Henderson
Yeah, this is a real loss. Joe played such an important part of the music scene in NYC and the West Coast during the 70's and will truly be missed. I had the chance to see him in Toronto in around 89 and was amazed at how controlled his sound was...not a loud player, but you could just hear the intensity burning though his horn, lifting the band up with him. As a small tribute, I played a set last night here in NYC at the Music Now! Festival...our set was dedicated to him. Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre followed us. An original member of the AACM, he played a heart warming set of music. Another individual voice well worth the effort of tracking down. Thanks for the post. From: "Jonny McIntosh" Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: , <313@hyperreal.org> Subject: [truevibes] Joe Henderson Date: Mon, 2 Jul 2001 16:24:44 +0100 Just in case you don't know, one time Detroit resident Joe Henderson (whose various albums and appearances on Blue Note I have eulogised on these lists before, no doubt) has reportedly passed away. More of cult figure than a widely recognised one, Henderson had a very distinctive tone and cut several superb albums for Blue Note in the 60s and Milestone in the 70s. He forged his own (often very modal) path somewhere between hard bop and Coltrane, latterly using electronics to make some fantastically innovative albums which never really got the acclaim they deserved at the time. Anyway, a legend. If you don't know him, certainly check "Mode For Joe" which is his, and perhaps Blue Note's, best album; "In 'N Out" with the excellent Kenny Dorham tune "Punjab"; "Power To The People" with the chilled "Black Narcissus" or the fantastic "Elements" with Alice Coltrane and contender for best bass player ever - Charlie Haden, as well as numerous performances on albums by Horace Silver, Patrice Rushen, Pete La Roca, Lee Morgan, Andrew Hill... Hi There Morgan and Darshan recently played my night here in nyc. They rocked. They throw down a wide variety of stuff ranging from disco and klassics to techno and touches of house. I was trying my darnedest not to trainspot them all night. And I can get my way around the classics a fair liitle bit myself too so there you go. Hope that helps. Cheers Can anybody give me a comment about Morgan Geist as a DJ? What kind of stuff does he spin? Does he play more house or the technoid stuff? Thanx in advance.. Here is a great letter from Wanye Kramer explaining the relationship the MC5 and Sun Ra developed, and how it lead to their appearence at the festival. Yes, the MC5 werent at that fest (as it was in 72'), but played many times with the Akestra in the years prior to their appearance there. Hopefully you'll enjoy it as much I have. Re: [313] what is an ewi midi controller?
Yo no probs!:-) A EWI is a midi controller built by Yamaha ( Roland has one too) that allows wind instrument players (such as myself) to play midi controlled intruments and modules. They have the same fingering set ups as saxes and trumpets. You blow into them to control things like attack, volume phrases (much like a real wind instrument) then you use the fingering patterns you already know the control the pitch. They've been around for quite awhile but dont get used alot. The Akestra has used them quite regularly. The whole sax section used to bust out on them. And Marshall was kickin out the the jams on the trumpet version at a show they did at the Knit here in NYC awhile back. Hope that helps!:-) From: Alexander Ohanyan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] what is an ewi midi controller? Maybe Im saying things that everyone knows already..but the Akestra and Detroit (well Ann Arbor) have a pretty storied past no? They played the Ann Arbor Blues Fest(which are regarded as legendary gigs) multiple times aswell as collaborating with the MC5.. I hope Im not re itertating common knowledge...but I would guess that that has some signifigance in their booking..plus it will be a cool show.
