(313) DSO/Oslo/HNY!
The party at Orchestra Hall is going to be dope I think! (free bar!!! great music bathrooms that don't smell like puke...unless u puke!;-) I don't think there regular clientele will show Although I did play there on New Years with Amp one year and the folks in there tuxedos looked at us like we were crazy!!! We went in there band of gypsies style...all funked out;-) They needed to get there smooth on to the fake Rhodes that only Kem could provide. He played after us... It's a shame Oslo has closed! Although I have not hung there in a while. It had the best sushi in town and provided a space for the good music! I can count the alternatives on one finger! Still undecided about techno Opera though:-) Have a blessed New Year list! 2007 is going to be the bizzness.. j

JOHN BELTRAN presents NOSTALGIC - Going Home EP (GROOVIA SOUND PROJECT) lovin' this, anyone got anymore suggestions along the same lines? More coffee table techno? That's awesome! When I did the guitar on this track, I felt like it was a little smooth jazzy;-) but people really seem to love this record and I have started to appreciate it more. J is going to be in the D on the 19th at buzz bar wit me. Come through. j
RE: (313) Bay Area events coming up that might interest 313ers
Thomas Brinkmann at Recombinant Media Labs June 1, 2006 Fresh from headlining at Montreals MUTEK festival and his hometown in Cologne, Germany, you >are invited to attend a very special educational event where Thomas Brinkmann himself will pilot a >series of provocative real time sessions on the science of sonic propagation at Recombinant Media >Labs, June 16, 17 and 18th. Provocative sonic propagation? This is how invision this über heady event: Participant: Please, please, let's hear about your childhood. T. Brinkmann: Very well. Where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low-grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a 15-year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent, I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds. Pretty standard-really. At the age of 12, I received my first scribe. At the age of 14, an Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There's nothing like a shorn scrotum, it's breathtaking I suggest you try it. sorry y'all.had to do it. No hard feelings Thomascan I borrow that c+c music factory 12" you always play? Or can we have a discussion about how you think jazz is bulls++t? Sorry, sorry...I can't stop!!!
RE: (313) DEMF On Radio 1

Re: (313) Shez Satan
It's funny...I went and checked this out and really liked it;-) More then all the other Carl tracks of recent hype It's weird how I will feel the music that people hate on and hate what people love. Without preconception, j
RE: (313) New DEMF Order
PYRAMID STAGE 12-3P CARL CRAIG This is just f++king weird? I wonder if Carl requested this time? I can't see why though? Anybody who has ever had the balls to run this festival should be headlining. besides Carol Marvin;-) and those who have headlined (like every year) should run the festival once.. Carl and Derrick started this!!! I don't care if Carl takes a sh+t on the main stage from 10-midnight. He deserves it.. Respectfully and musically!!!
RE: (313) montreux vs movement
How long will it take movement/demf (memorial day weekend electronic festival) to have the integrity of the labor day jazz festival? Will techno have to gain the respect that jazz has--like if it gets its own section in public libraries as jazz does before techno is considered something for intellectuals? 20 years or so?? Does having a rave in heart-plaza make people who are not into underground electronic music hate us fans even more? Coming from a jazz and an electronic background I can give you some insight into this. Fisrt off, most people don't give a f+++ about jazz just as much as they don't give a f+++ about techno;-0 I can also remember being at a meeting for the Detroit Jazz Fest. (the second year of DEMF) and the big concern was budget. Ford had pulled a lot of sponsorship money from Montreux Detroit and put it into DEMF!!! FOR REAL!!! The year after Montreux became the Ford International Jazz Fest. Shocking I am pretty sure the only thing a sponsor cares about is selling you there product and respect of music has nothing to do with that. Montreux Switz has also been around for a long, long time. They have really earned there rights, as will DEMFgive it some time.

Anyone else check that last night? I think it's been on before as my wife recalls viewing it. Very good documentary on the history of the band. I saw it last night. It was great. Re: (313) Marketing Ghostly and Amp Fiddler
You guys are making me wish that I kept touring with Amp! Pias is in charge of Amp's record and they are a Europe based label. I bet you all the Europe hype will spill over to the states, at least on a strong underground level (which it has already). Is the mainstream ready for something this funky and fresh in the states? Amp has been at this sh*t forever and all the hype he gets is well deserved. anywho.here is a link to a video of Amp at bbc. thats me on guitar.. http://www.pias.com/videos/ampbbc.wmv p.s. Hey Tristan. I really noticed this as well. they're battering this album arent they? I was really surprised at first, but like Robert says, he's the next portishead kind of thing for all the lawyers etc! not that there is anything wrong with that at all. yeah, but it caught me by surprise to see they were spending s much money on it. I reckon its good though, they're really pushing a detroit artist that they feel has a chance to appeal to quite a few people. weird that he's not getting pushed in the US - maybe the record co. who licensed it aren't as confident? anyway, yeah, just wanted to say I really noticed it too. alex _ - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers. (313) JOHN ARNOLD & AYRO IN CHICAGO
Hello Chicago peeps, Come check the show and don't forget to say hello. -john SONOTHEQUE, UBIQUITY & OMOAMUSIC PRESENT JOHN ARNOLD vs. AYRO FRIDAY NOVEMBER 7 WORLD EXCLUSIVE FIRST FREESTYLE FACE OFF!! HYBRID LIVE & DJ SET FROM DETROIT NEW SCHOOLERS WITH RESIDENT DJ HIDE SUKENARI Sonotheque, Ubiquity & Omoamusic are proud to celebrate the release of John Arnold's "Neighborhood Science" (Ubiquity) & Ayro's "ElectronicLoveFunk" (Omoamusic) with a world exclusive first freestyle face-off featuring hybrid live and dj set. Being based in Detroit, the home of the Motown sound, has shaped and further expanded their own musical creativity by giving a soulful presence to their personal forays into Electronica. John Arnold, while being trained in classical guitar, has been at the forefront of the burgeoning Detroit electronic scene. Invited by Carl Craig to perform in his first-ever live electronic gig at the inaugural Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF) ,John Arnold went on to release 2 EPs for Transmat Records. While his work on John Beltran's "Aztec Girl" was licensed by British drum 'n' base innovator LTJ Buken for Good Looking's Earth 4 compilation . John also finds the time to play in the world music based five-piece live grouping ,Blackman & Arnold. His current record "Neighborhood Science" has just been released on the Ubiquity label and includes appearances by keyboardist/vocalist Amp Fiddler (P-Funk All-Stars), vocalist and multi-talented musician Ayro and producer/vocalist Malik Alstin (Roy Davis Jr.). Ayro, a.k.a. Jeremy Ellis, also a child of the Motor City and lead a breakthrough performance at the 2001 DEMF. His first single "Let This", quickly became a true underground hit and graced the charts of such dj luminaries as Gilles Peterson, Patrick Forge, Francois K and Dego of 4 Hero. After years of working with Detroit legends Jazzhead , Ayro went on to collaborate with Aril Brikha and the Time/Space band on Transmat. Ayro has released music with Carl Craig of the Detroit Experiment and Recloose while also doing remixes for Jazzanova, Fertile Ground, John Beltran and of course John Arnold. Their musical philosophy can be summed up in an interview given by John Arnold recently. "My whole vision with the group was to really try and emulate what DJs were doing, but do it live. We'd bring in a lot of great DJs in town who'd play with us before - Alton Miller came, DJ Bone. All the Detroit guys would come through and play and it'd be a great experience, 'cause we'd have this jazz band and then we'd have the DJs as well, so it was a really well-rounded educational thing about music, but people dug it 'cause it was dance music as well." This hybrid set will include John Arnold and Ayro looping and sampling live on computer and electronics. John will also be dj'ing. They will be joined by local resident groove merchant Hide Sukenari. Doors open up at 8pm - 2am. For further information contact Joe Bryl at 312-226-7600 or by e-mail at [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1444 w. chicago. _ Is your computer infected with a virus? Re: [313] Interesting Indeed
The Montreaux Detroit Jazz Festival, I believe, is now called the Ford Detroit Jazz Festival. I went to the meeting for last years festival and it made me want to puke. Ford sponsorship was one of the main topics of the meeting, because the money givin to the jazz fest, compared to the demf, was no where near the same. I guess you can't sell Ford focuses to a jazz crowd. They had a t.v. special for the jazz fest last year and actually stopped the music while broadcasting, so the CEO of Ford could come on stage and promote there cars. This was around the time everybody was getting killed in their suv's, because of firestone tires. (I puke, again) I can honestly say that the jazz festival may not even happen in the years to come. Thanks Ford. If the Howdown had the draw that the demf does, there would be some points we could all count on: 1. Ford releases a new car called the Rodeo(smells like a steak and drives like a mechanical bull) 2. The Ceo of Ford would be walking around in a ten gallon hat 3. The festival would be called the FORD Detroit howdown 4. The festival would fold, because the sponsors would eventually move on to the next money maker. All I can be thankfull for is that I was able to perform at Montreux(when it was still montreux) and I was able to perform at the demf(when it was still the demf). ja hey when IS that jazz festival? I saw dizzy gillespy (sp?) there when I was a kid and would like to go back for some live jazz :) -Joe Indeed, though *most* of what you've said is correct, the first point -- that the name is inconsequential -- is the only one under real question. let's not forget that the other big 3-day festival (jazz, you know, during whichever one of those labor day/memorial day weekends isn't in may and is in september, right?) built an *enormous* international reputation, and generated almost as much foreign tourism to detroit, and almost as many festival attendees, as the DEMF did in its first year. and what is that festival called now? i can't remember anymore, now that it's not montreaux. i mean, i'm serious -- no one knows what the name is. but ask anyone connected to detroit's rather limited tourism industry (with the exception of the boileau dude, right?) and they'll tell you that the lack of the name hurt international tourism for the jazz fest. at least for the first two years. and, BTW, let's not forget that teh way the freep article was written, May gets only six or seven words to give his framework for the suit. and any six or seven words that end and begin with the possibilty of the DEMF being bought by a foreign concern are gonna sound like the rantings of someone who's a little paranoid, or just into getting promotion. until you remember what happened to that other festival. you know. whatever its name is now -- i can't remember. cheers, -marc At 10:42 AM -0500 3/11/02, <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: >the name is rather inconsequential. > >the city of detroit owns hart plaza > >the city of detroit fronts the money for the festival (it is later paid >back by the sponsors) > >the city will decide who gets the contract next year. > >this strikes me as a publicity stunt. > - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] dub detroit/berlin claude young
There is a new mix c.d. by Claude Young and dj rok, called Berlin/Detroit. It is available at dj-sets.com It might just be what you are looking for Curt. Artists included are Model 500, Brian Harden, Nubian Minds, Carl Craig, Jeff Mill, Shake, Technasia.to name a few. I was lucky enough to get a track on there as well. check it out. ja From: Curt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <313@hyperreal.org> Subject: [313] deep dub detroit/berlin ramble Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2001 23:48:32 -0600 (CST) Hey, I want to get more of the deep dubby stuff on CD (or mp3's). I have the Maurizio, Vainqueur, Decay Product, and Deep Chord CD's. That's pretty much it for store bought CD's. On order, I bought Fluxion: Vibrant Forms II, and the self titled Rhythm and Sound CD. I found out about Rythym and Sound because I was listening to this mp3 mix and it dropped Rhythm and Sound's "Imprint" in the middle of the set. It was the deepest dubbiest thing I've heard!--and thankfully the playlist was posted so I'd know who made it. I saw on the CD that the track is over 16 minutes long! I just hope that it doesn't have any reggae (sp?) vocals dropped in like *some* of their songs. And after hearing that Mill's "Every dog..." has vocals, I lost hope in just 'buying' any Mill's release that comes out--because vocals can make techno sound very tacky if not done right. Well, on the mp3 front, I know DJ Mary has that one great dubby mix at techno.cz, but too bad I can't find more great mixes online. I think that deep dub stuff is too underground or obscure for many people, even in techno--it's too bad. New paragraph.---> Well, I also bought Vladislav Delay's "Anima" Cd. From the outset, the reviews were mixed, but I liked the fact that it was one big 62 minute electronic music experiment (so said the reviews). I'd like to hear it for myself though...the clips sounded cool . Personally, I've listened to a bunch of the Chain Reaction Cd's and I'm not totally impressed with all of them--some of them just aren't dubby enough, you know? Hmm, enough rambling, later. Hey Graham, It is really good to see someone talking about Neil. He actually does not work at Transmat anymore. He was there pretty much from the beginning though. After he completed his Detroit Esculator Co. "Black Buildings-E.P." on Peacefrog, he moved to San Francisco. I am a friend of his and I miss him. He was a really cool person to have around Detroit. I played guitar on that record. He was always really into my music, but unfortunatly as my first fragile release came out, Neil left the label to pursue other interests. [313] Jeff Lorber --- E2-E4
It's so cool to hear someone talk about Jeff Lorber, he is among my favorites. I do a song in my live set that contains a JL break and it freaks the room. This past Saturday I played at the Motor, and the JL break song was the highlight of my set. I use to play guitar in a band called Jazzhead and spin JL between sets. His musical influence to me is right up there with Weather Report, Return to Forever, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jaco, etc.(this is two messages in one) I think that E2-E4 was a huge influence on early Detroit Techno. Being a guitarist and an electronic producer from Detroit, I feel a certian connection to Manuel Gottsing(I don't think I spelled that right). About a month ago a friend sat me down to listen to E2-E4, and it blew my mind. While I was listening to it, I thought it was an old Detroit track I had never heard before, but it was actually this rock guitar player from Germany. I think this record came out in the early eighties. john From: Charles Prince <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Rhythm Droid <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> CC: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] Jeff Lorber...the Missing Link? Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2001 18:57:32 -0400 Cool to hear someone else is into JL, a true muso's muso...though the further back you go with his releases, the better they get. In the late 70s & in the 80s he did some great, soulful stuff, full of intricate horn arrangements & life-affirming, machine-driven jazz funk. I've often thought he might perhaps be an unrecognized influence on Detroit techno, never having received the kind of notice reserved for Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Herbie Hancock, YMO, etc., or to a lesser extent, George Duke. His keyboard chops are phenomenal on these early recordings, yet there's also a melodic, melancholic vibe, an unspoken yearning present that lifts much of the material to a new, proto-techno level; that same moody feel you can hear, for instance, in Carl Craig's "Domina" remix or Kenny Larkin's masterful "Without." Something about those chords... A lot of it may be down to the equipment--trying to squeeze new sounds & emotions out of circuitry that's only just up to the task. On his 1984 'Step by Step' album, Lorber lists: Yamaha DX1, KX1, DX7, Oberheim OB8, Xpander, DSX, Emulator II, Cooper Midi Interface & Disk drive, Wave 2,3 Waveterm, Rockman, Linndrum, Simmons, SDS7, SDS8, & Minimoog. The sounds & syncopated rhythms (aided throughout by tricky panning techniques), remind me not only of May's classic material, but also of some of Hakan Lidbo's fresh 'Tech Couture' tracks. And "Step by Step," the title track, with Audrey Wheeler on lead vocals --powered by a relentless, chunky synth bassline--finds a strong echo in Recloose's wickedly deep'n'funky remix of Herbert's "Leave Me Now," as well. Anyway, the best Jeff Lorber Fusion releases are pretty rare now, & his rather bland-sounding recent output mostly lacks that techno-soul longing for the ineffable. If you ever have a chance, though, take a decent listen (on a good system), to "Pacific Coast Highway" off 'Step'...4'42" seconds of pristine musical bliss that (re)maps mind & body into the sweetest of configurations. Re: [313] Best of the best...
I think that Dani's voice is so special. I never really go for vocal tracks, but her work with Herbert blows my mind. I have also heared a remix done by Recloose of Leave Me Now. I don't know if it's out yet, but it is the sheeat. I agree with Dan on that Neon phusion track as well. I think that vocalist is the same woman that is singing on this Loqate track(recloose remix on Ubiquity) I am playing guitar on. My third pick would be my roommate Jeremy Ellis(I hope that's not to bias). I don't know if anybody knows who he is yet, but man he sounds like Stevie Wonder. He will be performing at the DEMF under the name Ayro. We did a track with John Beltran on Earth 4 called Aztec Girl. If you can check out Jeremy. john From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "Phonopsia" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, "Ian" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, "The Music Institute" <313@hyperreal.org> Subject: Re: [313] Best of the best... [313]jazz show
Hello list, My name is John Arnold. Some of you might know me from my fragile/transmat record. I would like to invite you to a show I am having this Friday, March 9th at the Magic Bag. My world music group (Blackman and Arnold) will be having it's record release party. The show will not be electronic, it will be live acoustic jazz. Also, Francisco Mora(the drummer from the Innerzone Orchestra) is opening the show for us with his jazz quartet. I think I am more excited to see Francisco, then I am to release my c.d. It would be cool to see some of you at the show. peace, ja _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
Re: [313] could be...montreaux
I could not agree with you more, it is shocking. I was lucky enough to play at Montreux the year before the switch and it was beautiful. It was a dream of mine. Last year I went and could not believe how much the vibe had changed. They broadcasted the festival on T.V. and it seemed to be a glorified Ford commercial. This was very disinchanting. I could only imagine that the first Montreux festival had to be like the DEMF, full of exciting new idea's and brimming with the sense of community, music and greatness. Ford's ambition is to make money and to cloke the fact that people are dying in there S.U.V.'s. I could smell it in the air at last years Montreux. That's why in this day and age something like the DEMF is so critical to the Detroit community and the world, because it is about one thing, music.
