Yes, it is. Sorry if I came off as one of the haters, because I
totally agree with this... Maybe I'm just out-of-sorts because I'm not
a huge Miss Kittin fan and I didn't care at all for Mayer's set here

One more note, to forestall possible flaming... I'm absolutely NOT
willing to engage in distinctions between musical enjoyment, like
"hipsters don't REALLY LIKE techno" or "since you've only been going
to techno shows for a month, you don't REALLY GET IT" or "since you
won't be here in a year or so, you can't ACTUALLY be enjoying the
music".

Epistemologically, it's pretty dubious, and it really makes no
difference anyway. I'm just interested in actually attendance
trends...

It makes a difference because we're talking about the possibility of
new people getting into techno, and one wonders whether this is a fad
or a long-term trend. If 500 people went to see Surgeon last time he
was in town, and 1 go next time, one wants to know whether this
will last (the way rock and roll suddenly got popular and STAYED THAT
WAY) or whether attendance will be back down to 500 or worse next
year.

So I think it does matter what percentage of new folks at a techno gig
are likely to develop an abiding interest in techno. I'm not willing
to commit to demographic distinctions or hairstyle criticism or
whatever, but I do think the difference between fad and trend is real,
and relevant.

Yeah, it's obviously a matter of taste, but I'd be a lot more
impressed (and pleased) if you said 1400 people went to a Brooklyn
warehouse to see Oliver Ho and Regis. It doesn't shock me if poppier
techno draws a larger crowd. I mean, that's why it's called "pop
music," right?

live, very good and a lot of fun. Expect a harder, more dancy sound
that you'll find on most of his records.

Can't comment on the techno connection, but as far as recommendations,
there's no better place to start than the two-CD collection "Substance",
which is an absolute classic. Also, the more recent CD "(the best of)

[313] new mix online

2001-08-13 Thread matt hellige
i just put a new sixty-minute mix on my web site, including tracks by
herbert, christian morgenstern, antonelli electr., unai, home and garden,
mr. g., larry heard, etc.

technically speaking, it's probably not my best set ever, but if you like
slower, synthier techno and house, i think you'll dig it...

it can be had from http://matt.immute.net/music/ (it's the last one in the
list) or point your mp3 player directly at:
http://matt.immute.net/sets/matt_hellige_-_8.13.2001.mp3

all feedback is, of course, very welcome...

[313] chicago events list

2001-05-31 Thread matt hellige
this is mostly for the chicago people on the list, or people close enough
to care about things happening in chicago. i know this is the 313 list
and not the 312 list and blah blah blah, but in light of the recent discussion
regarding "a means to an end", i figure maybe there are enough interested
people to make this posting worth it...

lately, i've been frustrated by the lack of any kind of web page listing
techno-house-whatever-related events in and around chicago. so i put one
together myself. without going into a long justification or explanation
about what it is or what it's for or how i'm going to operate it (there's
some of that on the page itself, for those interested), if you have an
interest in such a thing, please check it out.

the url is: http://immute.net/list

i'll add those things that i hear about and care about, but submissions
are welcome and appreciated. there's an easy form to fill out... also
please send me any other feedback, positive or negative...

there another answer, and it's probably an even more siniter one: they're going
after a target audience that they know will not only not care about the carl
situation, but will never even hear about it. given the number and placement of
advertisements for this year's festival, i think it's safe to say that they
have their sights set on a much bigger fish than the techno scene, or even the
serious dance music/electronic music community as a whole.

i can pretty much guarantee that the vast majority of people who hear about
this on mtv, fox or (for chicago people) q101, b96 and gci, have never heard of
carl craig and will never know how things went down between the organizers.

how much do you know about the beginnings of and the relationships between
the people who organized lollapalooza, for example?

i'm not blaming any individuals for this, and i don't know much about the way
the festival was/is/will be run... but i can pretty much guarantee that to
whatever extent large corporate interests (read: ford and others) have an
interest this, that is the degree to which they will seek to appeal to the
largest and richest possible audience, even to the direct disenfranchisement of
the actual music community.

Re: [313] G Flame amd Mr. G

2000-09-11 Thread matt hellige
i had heard that all the g flame and mr. g stuff was colin's as well,
but i've recently heard otherwise. if you look at the fine print on
the releases (i'm not at home so i can't remember specifically which ones)
you'll see things like: "written and produced by g flame, engineered by
mr. g" (or vice versa, can't remember which is which), which is in line
with what i've most recently heard, that colin produced most of the tracks,
but cisco was still doing the engineering.

i've also heard that some of the more recent 12's (the first alpha
release in particular) are w+p by cisco as well... i can't remember now
what the fine print said on that one.

in any case the whole thing is a bit confusing...

yes. this is one of several reasons why records are never cut to very
near the spindle. to a discerning listener, there is a considerable loss
in quality toward the end of even a normal lp.

s. stands for sebastian... he is better known as "seba" when he
records atmospheric drumnbass for the good looking labels (glr, 720,
etc...), and he's one of the best and most consistent artists in
that camp.

before doing jungle, he recorded some deep house as peanut planet
along with a partner (lo-tek, dunno his real name) who also made the
transition to dnb.

seba and lo-tek together did two remixes for svek awhile back, one
of ralph lundsten's "diskophrenia"... not sure what the other was.

there was a 10" last year on svek called "pulse fiction" by forme
that was also, i'm told, by him... sounds plausible to me...

agreed. it's a great album. also check out the new g flame record
on alpha, which i'm told is actually by cisco, and it shows. sounds
a bit more like the advent than the other g flame and mr. g stuff,
but it's not quite as slammin and i think it quite nicely bridges

the party you're talking about is on april 1 in chicago, and i can't remember
what it's called... the uk personality is steve bicknell.

i'm curious what the "8 hour 4 table grudge match" thing meant also...
i can't really see rush and bicknell doing an 8 hour 2-by-4, so maybe
it's 4 hours each on 4 tables? or maybe it's just promoter b.s. and
doesn't mean anything...

incidentally, also playing at the same party are dnb giants andy c, ed
rush and optical, which is a rare treat indeed, and several big house
guys as well (boris dlugosch and several others, i think). should be
quite a party, especially in chicago... hehe...

2000-02-14 Thread matt hellige
as long as we're slightly non-313 anyhow, i'd suggest checking out
