What time are you speaking of? 1999 or thereabouts? when Perlon and Playhouse just began putting out its trademark sound? To my knowledge these guys (Kontrol promoters) have been around for about a year, and other promoters (blasthaus for example) have been booking microhouse producers for a while (Hawtin, Matthew Dear). It's not like apendics.shuffle (or however you spell his name) and Orac had albums out more than a year ago (or that large of a body of work for that matter), which brings me to my point, that they're cashing on a current trend while ignoring talent which inspired the whole minimal scene in the process. -d --- Wojtek [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: But then again, what else can you expect from a promotion company that spells the word control with a K and uses photoshop to make the producers it books appear otherworldly, quirky, and cool. (313) New music, sans soleil, stacey pullen in SF
I'm not sure how new this really is, but the Transmat artist mr. trommer has put out a nice 80+ minute compilation of the tracks he's played live on a free mp3 compilation available for download from the phoniq netlabel. Ace 313 dream techno, nice pads, good lively rhythms, etc, with some slightly squelchy sounds (at least one broken beat trackon it, too). Highly recommended. On a different note, went to see Stacey Pullen in SF last night and to my surprise and disappointment, he played nothing but low grade echoey trance with a buildup every four or so minutes, with a reverbed spinback in between those. Is this what he usually plays nowadays? or was he just having an off night? It's hard to believe that someone of his caliber would play crappy euro trance, with just about every single song containing the same predictable buildup and then breakdown. To be fair though, he did do ok mixer tricks here and there, but the song selection had zero variety and was extremely, extremely bland. Did he get any better towards the end of his set? I certainly hope that he did. was it just the pre-2am slump for him? Or is this what happens when djs from Detroit sign to big management companies?

(313) Carl Craig in SF 16april2004, new UR (a week late, but oh well)
I'm surprised that no one has posted their impression from the gig that took place last friday here in San Francisco (did any list members go?). Carl was in top form, representin' Detroit in full effect, playing some of his own classics and reworks of others' work. He played the newest UR track Windchimein two different versions, the more bare bones/minimal one from the 7 as well as the more orchestrated one from UR-054, talk about 21st century high tech soul/jazz!!! alongside his own remix in Inner City's Goodlife, an unfamiliar to these ears remake based on not much more than the bassline from The Climax, and a version of Throw. He also played a Moloko-sounding vocal track that intensified the raw Detroit-primal vibe already in place (for lack of a better term). I could hear a Los Hermanos-sounding track for a bit, ( I'm not sure which one); and lotsa synthy/minimal/detroity sounding techno. Definitely jacking music, to be sure. Any other feedback on the most recent UR output? wk

I've followed the link to the DeFocus Records show (above) and found that it includes an interview with our own 313-er CiM (even though he hasn't posted to the list in a while). Also, the tracklist from the above-listed show looks tasty to say the least (a track by Stasis here, Larry Heard there), with Plaid sounding quite broken beat-y (or is it drum'n'bass-y?) and although a bit colder perhaps than some of Titonton Duvante's tracks, the drum tracks and percussion sounds on their new album remind me a lot of the of Shake's or Derrick May's work; perhaps it's due to their energy and even melancholy on some tracks (especially with Cedar City, which reminds of the nostalgic melody of Winter on the Boulevard from the Innovator LP. Plaid's new album also sounds similar to Anthony Shakir's more recent work (Mr. Shakir's Beat Store Ep on Klang, for example, especially the tracks untitled or the pinger from that EP, or Lay back from the Convalescence EP). And while all of these artists have their own distinct style that sets them apart from the others, while the energy and flow of their music has a similar underlying emotional/sonic quality. Which brings me to this: Can an artist be considered Detroit (or simply techno) ONLY if he or she uses the classic Detroit instruments and melodies/style or is it more about the energy that the music carries?
