(313) Dan Sicko Memorial Wild Kingdom

2011-09-01 Thread Richard Hester
This week's Wild Kingdom contains a tribute to recently passed author
Dan Sicko, whose book The Techno Rebels is a must-read for those who
want to investigate the roots of techno. I could have used that book
when I was trying to feel my way back in 94 and 95 - it's still a
vital resource now.. The first two hours of my show will be a solid
block of 313 vinyl in Dan's honor. Expect some of the usual suspects,
but also a fair number of obscure surprises, and a couple of ringers
from outlying fellow-travelers in Kalamazoo (1/2-way between Detroit and
Chicago!!!) and East Lansing. You can guess who they might be, or listen
and find out. DJ of the Month Club, usually featured on the first
Friday of the month, is moved to next week - I'll talk about it then.
Last week's playlist can be found at
http://www.kfjc.org/music/playlist.php?i=38821 .
Limited time archives for all shows on KFJC are available at
http://www.kfjc.org/broadcast_archives/ . These are rolling archives,
available for two weeks after any given show. My shows are listed under
Goodwrench. Send comments and suggestions to i...@kfjc.org .

The Wild Kingdom airs on KFJC-FM 89.7, Friday Night/Saturday Morning,
10P-2A (6A-10A GMT). Potential listeners outside the San Francisco Bay
area can find a webcast at http://www.kfjc.org/netcast/index.php .
Present and past Wild Kingdom playlists are also archived at kfjc.org.
You can also check out archived playlists from my first KFJC show Just
Desserts that was on Fridays 10P-2A from 1992 through 1999 (Deja Vu,
huh?). Archived playlists exist for that show starting from Fall 1995 to
New Year's Eve 1999/2000, so you can see what what I'm up to these days
is pretty much consistent with what I was up to all along.

If you do tune in (especially via the web), please take a little time to
let me know your locale. I'm also interested in promo music from all
over and in promoting local (San Francisco Bay area) techno-type events.
If you want to do some promotion for an event, contact the KFJC
promotions department at pr...@kfjc.org to arrange ticket giveaways
and/or to send information for inclusion in our concert outlook. Thanks
to those who have sent promo music so far.

Dan's Techno Rebels is considered a bible here in Australia. Every DJ/
producer of note in Melbourne has a copy. It was such a key book.

I recall telling Visage bassist Barry Adamson he and Frequency 7 were
mentioned in the book and he was stunned - he's a Mancunian guy now
based in Sydney who plays blues. He just had no idea.

I was just extremely saddened to hear of Dan's passing.

I read Dan's book about 5 years after getting involved with techno. I knew
Detroit techno had a rich history but didn't truly appreciate it until
reading Techno Rebels. The man may be gone but his legacy continues. RIP

I never had the opportunity to meet Dan in person, but I definitely
felt like I knew him through the community that is 313.

He was instrumental in educating this guy, living in Sydney at the
time (about as far away from Detroit as you could get) via 313, his
excellent online Reverb Mag (took me forever to download those tiny
QuickTime movies, but it was my first quick glimpse at seeing Dan Bell
and Rob Hood live) and of course his Techno Rebels book. He was a true
ambassador of Detroit.

My sincere condolences go out to his family and his close friends, he
will be sorely missed.

2011-08-28 Thread Fred Heutte
The extraordinary thing about Detroit techno is not just the music
but the people. I usually do a practice mix once or twice a week
and last night played Kano's I'm Ready in honor of Dan and
remembering some of the other extraordinary people who have passed --
Ken Collier, Laura Gavoor. Aaron-Carl.

I saw Dan on the first day of the first DEMF, missed seeing him this
year on Friday. He worked for the last 6 years at Organic -- one of the
ironies is that when I joined 313 in 1995, hyperreal.org was living at
Brian Behlendorf's desk at the original location of Organic in
San Francisco.

Dan was a gifted writer, as we all know. But even more importantly,
he was a clear thinker and was able to locate where the real meaning
is among a messy overlay of facts and suppositions. Like many of
us he tried blogging a bit, and these short pieces give a bit of Dan's
perceptive view of life...

A true friend of all of ours, and of Detroit.

Re: (313) Dan Sicko

2011-08-27 Thread logic7
I met Dan in early 2002 during our employee orientation at BBDO Detroit. They
did the whole go around the room and say your name thingy and when he said his
name, I immediately knew who he was. We spoke a moment then, but I felt kinda
awkward 'cause I didn't want to be known as just some techno guy from the 313
list. I spoke to him again a few weeks later while working on his PC, IIRC he
was playing Descent 3 against someone else in the office on his Mac. When we
spoke, I kinda avoided talking about the 313 list or anything else techno
related 'cause, again, I didn't want to seem like some one-dimensional guy from
the 313 list. Later that year I did a couple of gigs, a LifeFest pre-party, the
odd show here or there, and did an on-air spot on Crush Collision once. I never
brought any of it up to Dan 'cause, once again, I didn't want to be that guy
from the 313 list.

In retrospect, maybe I SHOULD have spoke up a bit more, maybe invited him to a
show or two, or even said hey, I'm spinning on CC tonight, check it out if you
have a minute

I'm keeping Dan and his family in my prayers, hopefully I'll get another chance
to say I'm from the 313 list...

wired stereo speakers into the bowls of two toilets in the living room
of his apartment.

My second visit was in 1998, when I stayed with Dave Walker in River
Rouge. The first night I got there was the closing party for Dan
Bell's Seventh City distributor, and so I basically drove from Iowa
City straight to 7th City. That was where I met Dan Sicko -- and Alan
Oldham, and DJ Teep, and Brendan Gillen and a whole slew of
Detroiters. Dan always strikes me as one of the friendliest funniest
people you'd meet. He might look like an accountant, but he's wicked
smart, a great guy, who may be Detroit's best techno ambassador.

Through the years I always ran into Dan every time I came to Detroit.
Sure, he literally wrote the book, but Detroit Techno is a small
family, and everyone knows and loves Dan, not so much for what he's
accomplished -- which is amazing -- but for who he is. When Techno
Rebels first came out Dan's biggest regret is that he hadn't been able
to track down the people behind Shari Vari, A Number of Names. A
few years later, through (I think) the good offices of the Burden
brothers at 430 West, A Number Of Names was playing live on the main
stage at DEMF. I didn't see Dan during their performance (though A
Number Of Names were nearly upstaged by Eddie Flashin Fowlkes
dancing in the puddles in the middle of the arena, but I know Dan was
somewhere -- backstage probably, grinning like a fool.

I'll be holding Dan and his family in the light, and I hope he's still
able to have some joy as his illness plays itself out. I'm sure
everyone who knows Dan is feeling devastated right now, but it's also
important to recognize what a joyful, accomplished positive life he's
led and is still leading. He's made every moment count.

(313) Dan Sicko Techno Rebels interview 10th anniversary

2009-04-02 Thread Andrew Duke

Ten years ago this month, back in a time before MP3,
IM, Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, and the like,
Cognition Audioworks' Andrew Duke spoke to author
Dan Sicko about Techno Rebels: The Renegades Of Electronic Funk,
his book that would go on to be published in June 1999.

To celebrate the forthcoming tenth anniversary of this
important book, Duke's interview with Dan Sicko, along with some
songs personally selected by Dan Sicko, has just been
added to the Andrew Duke's In The Mix show archive; you
can listen to this feature, included with full tracklisting, here:

http://cognitionaudioworks.com/AndrewDukeInTheMix.html

Also, by request, a couple of shows from earlier in 2009 have been
re-uploaded; to make way for these re-additions, some files
have had to be moved (basically, vbr versions are now housed
on andrew-duke.com and cbr versions will continue to be housed
on cognitionaudioworks.com), so please check the show archive
for updated links and full tracklistings for all shows.

Thanks.
Take care.
Andrew
