The US, with its faith in the market, decided it would be good to treat essential human services as commodities to be bought and sold for profit, making the electricity system as volatile as the stock market. In fact the energy wholesalers (people like Enron and Global Crossing, you know those companies that stole billions from taxpayers and employees and got a slap on the wrist?) are at an incentive to keep the system dangerously low in reserves, because they are paid more for providing reserve energy (that is energy below 18% of the capacity of the system) than they are for providing energy above the 18% checkmark. This means that after 1998 the local energy market in NY state was providing only around 10% of the capacity of the system, the rest was distributed from out of state investors or wholesalers, most of it from Canada who makes a lot of income by providing power to the US. This is what happened here in California a year and a half ago when Enron was busy shuttling power in and out of California getting paid for the energy each time it entered the state and other dirty tricks. Of course the Bush administration will use this as an excuse to build more power plants and rush the permitting process, sidelining any weak environmental standards and community issues still in place. RE: (313) Power outages (AC wimps)
I'mn not saying the outage isn't a pain- but the next person to whine about no AC can kiss my ass. Granted- its a fully powered AC cooled ass, but I lived from Aug '95-Aug '02 in houses without air. and for three of those years '99-'02, i either worked in the basement of motor (no AC) or from home (no-AC)

Man, this is the kind of thing that makes Alex Jones seem like a prophet. I worry about all my fellow ravers. I hope people are OK, maybe we can get some reports of what it was like? It's strange to say the least that so many cities got knocked out at around the same time, 4pm. I don't want to believe it, but my heart is not feeling good about this. Pardon me, I meant the people are being *treat* like animals, not acting like animals. I just feel really sorry for you lot, it seems like a real climate of fear since Sept. 2001. Best, Andrew Well, from what I can see on tv here in Minneapolis - people just seem to be trying to get home. Apparently, things are pretty orderly for the most part in NYC. I'm sure there will be lots of stories of disorder that will come later - especially if power isn't restored before nightfall. It's been hot there (NYC) and people will get bored - but who knows. Stay calm, wait and see. There's not much reporting going on of other cities though - the Freep had a blurb on it, not much more info yet as to the condition of the city. RE: (313) Power outages
Hear hear! I heartily agree, although I will be checking the facts on this one, it seems odd. The last one this bad was the same time of year, back in 1996. Maybe it's the heat? Was reading an interesting thing on GNN about a strategic vote for Dean in 2004...I dunno, it's not even my country! You have nothing to fear except fear itself (pay no attention to the man behind the curtain) Are you quoting the fromthewilderness.com advert?? Did you see it go out? And if so, can you say anything about it's effect? Nothing like that would ever happen in Britain, it's more restrained. I think Mike Ruppert is a real dude. And then there's Christopher Hitchens (The Long Short War - what a f*cking turncoat). Bunch of privileged twats more concerned with their careers than with telling the truth that is right in front of them. The Democrats haven't exactly been brilliant either - spent too many years courting Big Business. I could go on.. I saw this guy wearing a t-shirt the other day that said Vote For Anyone Else In 2004 Gotta love that I'm sure this was a failure of the power grid system - but it does show just how vulnerable the US can be. fxck power outages. of course I live 2 hours from detroit now, and left my house at 3pm so I could drink some beers and bbq before heading over to see traxx, twonz, and theo parrish. you all know that at around 4:15pm, the power went out and Im assuming (safely I imagine) that the event didn't go down, unless it was featuring lots of candles and generators. so I ended up trapped in ann arbor, unable to get money from the bank, no food, no ac, and my friends place is the top of a 3 story house. it was 85 degrees in his house when I left to take my chances with i-75 at 4am this morning. at least my car has tunes and ac :P I hope you're all faring well, and that you can find some peace despite the glaring technology void left by the power outage. RE: (313) Power outages
The outage covered the midwest and east coast, including Detroit, Lansing, northern Ohio, New York State, Connecticut, New Jersey, and all of Ontario except the far western part of the province. Windsor (in Canada, just across the river from Detroit) came back on slowly starting around midnight, but I think only because Canadian energy sort of detached itself from the U.S. power grid to get us up faster. But we've been going on and off sporadically all morning again, so who knows if we'll stay up. Joe/r3dshift: Hopefully power will be back in downtown Detroit by tomorrow night (it's back in Corktown now) because the lineup you missed (Traxx, Deecoy, Hieroglyphic Being, no Theo though) is scheduled to play at Untitled. Joe/r3dshift opined: I hope you're all faring well, and that you can find some peace despite the glaring technology void left by the power outage. I'm really sad that the best event in the last couple months just happened to fall on the night of the worst outage in history. Worst outage in history? Ah, someone that didn't live through the Great Blackout of November 1965, I see :-) (30,000,000+ people lost power that time.) Jamie Hurlbut dropped some science: Really it has to do with the deregulation of the energy industry that went on in this country around 1998. Welcome to neocon xtreme capitalism, where even terrorist threats get sold on the market! Post of the Year. Succinct and oh-so-true. It's unbelievable how evil this stuff truly is. California is the laughing stock of the world - we're now having a circus erm ... I mean, a recall election in part because Governor Gray Davis is such a panzy that he allowed us to get caught up in buying electricity contracts (after Enron scr*wed us) for 4 times the going rate because our backs were to the wall. Hey, you guys okay over there? Brooklyn is back on-line as of 20 minutes ago! *Whew* =) m*
RE: (313) Power outages
For info on the background of the power outage, try this link: http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?SectionID=10ItemID=4051 As I suspected, this seems to be a direct result of the push for deregulation of the electrical industry, an idea which apparently was first pushed in the UK under Thatcher. So now I'm blaming all of you in the UK! ;) _Dave -- Original Message - Subject: RE: (313) Power outages Date: Fri, 15 Aug 2003 15:17:48 + From: Carissa Tintinalli [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org The outage covered the midwest and east coast, including Detroit, Lansing, northern Ohio, New York State, Connecticut, New Jersey, and all of Ontario except the far western part of the province.
