Re: (313) Rane SSL

2004-06-30 Thread Marc Langsman
aye if i were you I hold off for a while too - as you say first generation
is always a bit dodgy. I waited for FS for 2 years before taking the plunge
to get it but its still not really up to the quality id expect for that
amount of cash (its a great system but it doesnt handle turntablism as well
as it should and also lot of peeps are having technical/usb issues - tho it
works fine in this area for me).

>From the rumours Ive been hearing I suspect SSL will blow it out of the
water on performance .. but now theres two on the market i imagine
development will speed up a bit and the next gen will be da bomb.

If anyones interested Ive got a FS mix up at www.langsman.com [the first
one] my first recorded effort with FS. Its a mix of breaks, 313, electro,
progressive and various other wacky bits n pieces - I went on a bit of
sample frenzy to test out FS (got some really nice stuff off the modulations
dvd!) hopefully in my next mix Im gonna try spinning some tunes and remixes
Ive been working on along with stuff some mates have done as I think this is
where there is a lot of benefit to be had from the whole mp3 thang.

peace out,
marc

i'm very eager to buy fs or a similar system. i've saved the cash and it's
sitting in the bank. but i regard them as beta releases.
software is like sex - i think it's a personal failure if you have to pay
for it. if i'm spending $500 on software, i don't want to have to reinstall
my system software or screw around with drivers or extension conflicts.
for that type of money i don't want any hassles or doubts. till then...

I use FS which has a text search facility - u cant really argue with that
really, no more flicking through record boxes just whap in a search string
and bobs your instant digitally encoded media :)

The latency on FS isnt too hot so itll be interesting to hear if/how much
better the rane performs [Id kinda hope with ranes reputation for
turntablist wares it would be]. Its quite funny actually ... the rane got
released and there was talk of it on the stanton FS forums ... now the
forums have been shut down "to provide customers with more precise
information" hmm intresting !

rane is just the distributor. Serato Audio Research is the designer of the
system.

seems to have a couple of extra features -mic input on the interface box,
(although i'm not sure what's wrong with just a mic input on your mixer)
slightly more varied gui- including some sort of visual beat matching
display (for wimps), and simulated spinning record label (for those who
can't just look down at the record?)

what really befuddles me is the fact that this is digital software that
will simulate playing on a CD player (!?). The turntable makes sense- but
are there people out there who really desire the CD player interface but
can' be bothered to lug those pesky discs?

it could be a great system. i'll have to ask tejada about it.

In the meantime- I'm wondering what other systems are out there that are
following in the footsteps of Final Scratch.

Has anyone seen a write-up comparing them all?

what was te one we were discussing a few months back (with the opens ource
code)

Here's the answer I was given by someone that ought to know:

"Apparently it's better than Final Scratch. Tracks better, has less latency
and overall quicker response. But the interface looks cheesy. If you can
handle that, it's apparently got better codecs."

Very interesting. One could assume, given Rane's reputation for building
bulletproof gear, that this would be a much more stable solution than that
other vinyl/computer interface...

I know nothing about this product, but we had John Tejada DJ here in Atlanta
last week and he was using it. This was the first I had heard of it, it
looked pretty cool. Since I have never used FS either I can't really say if
it was better/worse/different, but what I can say is that Tejada is a killer
DJ and knew how to use the product quite well.

Here is a link to a few photos of him in action, you can't really see the
interface in the photos, but his powerbook is over to the right of the
turntables, click either forward or backward for a few other photos as well:
http://www.latenightessentials.com/gallery/viewer.phtml?gal=tejada&count=23

As I was watching him in action I was wondering if it's a tough transition
to go from using a bag of 100+ records at a gig to having an infinite amount
of music to choose from that must be searched on one's laptop harddrive. I
don't typically know song names, but know I want to play that Perlon song,
so I flip to the Perlon sleeve when DJing. Anyone have experience with this?
How are the search features set up? Search by artist, title, label, genre,
etc??
