(313) italoboyz - victor cassanova (mothership records)

2007-06-19 Thread Ramon Crespo

Mothership transmission #1… Ricardo Villalobos says it best: “Viktor
Casanova is a record with a huge surprises effect. I play it since I
got it from the guys 3 month ago and every time I get the same
reactions…It has been a while, since I had a track which caused that
much attention on the dance floor. It happens not that often, that
every single time I play a track, lots of people ask me what it is.
People even ask, if it’s me who puts the opera singer sample over the
record…Viktor Casanova is the best example, that the only really
important thing about a good track is the idea behind it, nothing
more and nothing less.Add two very sexy minimal-tech remixes by
Samim and Lee Curtiss and you have a truly amazing record. mothership
is the new project from Claude VonStroke. The concept for the label
is to create a deeper more experimental techno based sound than the
tech-funk sound of his other label, dirtybird. A large percentage of
the proceeds from mothership will go to a school in downtown Detroit
that teaches and enables children to learn how to make music (yes,
even electronic music!) We are very excited to be able to give
something back to the community that helped shape and define our
music.Enjoy.

I dunno. I've not heard it. Not so interested in Claude von Stroke
though.

Hope it at least *sounds like a Detroit techno or house record!

I wonder which school will receive this 'large percentage' of the
proceeds?

Especially considering we're facing a new wave of minimal (not mnml)
house records coming out of Detroit. I mean people like Omar S, Keith
Worthy, DJ Jus Ed, Patrice Scott and obviously Theo Parrish. There's
a few related artists (not Detroit based) putting material out at the
mo like KSoul, Ra.H, DJ Qu and Lerosa.

I'm well excited by all this stuff currently.

that new lerosa on real soon is very nice, a different spin on that
detroit-esque house sound.

yeah, lots of different stuff out there is killing it IMO. malik
pittman played a white label of unirhythm 002 at the end of the 3
chairs set at the festival, he said it should be coming out very soon.
its pretty ridiculous as well!

id be very interested to hear that as well. i think its awesome when
people do stuff for their local communities. however, this feels
pretty disingenuous to me as none of the artists live in detroit. mr
vonstroke supposedly lived there (though you certainly cant hear that
from his sounds, where was he from? the city or the burbs?), but that
didnt stop him from moving away to greener pastures. maybe im biased
because i think his music is complete trash, but the dood seems like
an opportunistic joker who is trying to front on detroit music and i
find it pretty offensive.

The previous release on Real Soon by Juju Jordash is also another
take on that sound. A hot label currently, for sure.

Oh yeah, how could I forget Malik Pittman? He's a litle hit and miss

this new one is a very chicago influenced tracky thing with detroit
atmospheres. a little more straightforward, but definitely a killer!

I wasn't taken by the samples of that Victor Casanova record, but
Claude Von Stroke has made some tracks I really like. Beware the
Bird sticks with me, and makes me happy when I hear it, and though it
has a jokey title, the music is serious. And the Whistler is kind
of a gimmick track that people will get sick of if it's played too
much, but I like it on its own terms.

And the proof is in the playing out IMHO. CvS gets a visceral
reaction from a dancefloor. People who want to dance hear what they
like. Whether we'll be talking about it in a hundred years, well, _I_
won't be talking about anything in a hundred years, so for me it's
right now that matters.

whistler sounds to me like a wannabe chicago jam. dood sampled
himself playing a resonating filter with the cutoff. pretty weak.
beware of the bird sounds like he was listening to carl craig's
recent productions and wished he could be as ill as carl is. he is
not. basically, i dont hear anything original, nor are the knockoffs
or borrowed ideas inspired enough to make them noteworthy in any way.

if its really just about a visceral reaction, heavy metal will do that
much better than CvS ever would. trance music gets a visceral reaction
too. but so does good music, though it can do many other things at the
same time and still also be good to listen to in places other than a
club.
