I don't know how it mixed but it appears to have been mixed by someone
other than Brinkmann, can't remember who I don't have it in front of me.
That kicks ass though! What a buy for the price of a 12!!!

I remember jon moore playing a hip hop version of the day the teddy
bears
had their picnic - what a mad tune, everyone with big smiles on their
faces
bouncing about to that one. Yeah the house at the end was great - I
remember the morgan geist remix of disco train and a metro area track.

IMHO the best times in the blue room have been when there has been some
nice
house going let's hope they have more - would be great to see Ricardo
Villalobos and Thomas Brinkmann play back to back in that room :)

Thomas Brinkmann does dj. He uses dual-tonearm decks and throws in records with
geometrical scratches that he uses to create rhythms.

Here's an interview with the good man:
http://www.urbansounds.com/us_current/thumbnail/brinkmann_1.html

If I can find the time in the coming weeks I'll try to type out the interview I
did with him around the time of the Soul Centre release.

2003-08-28 Thread yussel
At Sonar 2002, Mills had some sort of video going during the beginning of
his set. The funny thing was- it said something like 'New Years Eve-
Tokyo' or something equally unrelated to Sonar. Thought that was a bit
weird. I didn't hang around to see if he pulled a disappearing act since
he was overdriving the system and i wanted to ride the go-carts.

On Wed, 27 Aug 2003 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

That explains it then, thanks for that John.

I was there when he did it at Sonar too. Personally I think although it's
good that he's experimenting, it's still better to have the DJ there in
front of you - the closer to the crowd the better. One of the good things
about the previous Lost (@ The Chainstore) was seeing how much Jeff was
into it enjoying himself - obviously you don't get that same interaction
with just the screen. The way they do it at Sonar is good though, with the
DJs being filmed shown live on all the big screens in the main room (the
overhead view of Mills was particularly good : )

I'll look forwrd to watching the DVD anyway :o)

Ok, it's shameless self-promo, but it might help clearing things up a
bit. Here's an extract from an interview I did with Jeff last year
 around this time.

TT: You just mentioned disappearing and reappearing. At Sonar I saw you
disappear at some point, but the music kept playing and there were
images of you playing records. I was pretty confused by that. Was that
done on purpose or did you just need to go to the loo?

Jeff: (laughs) No, that was on purpose. It was designed so that at one
point the film would take over. At a certain point there was no need for
me to be on the stage. Once the film took over I left and stood on the
side and watched for my cue to come back up and take over from the film.
That was like a test as well, to see if the people would be able to
continue on with the party if say something was simulated. That was an
experiment. I don't think it worked out so well because the venue was so
large that the people in the middle or the back couldn't see anyway. We
tried it once before in Tokyo and it was the same thing. At first the
people were confused, they didn't understand where I had gone, but the
music was still playing and there was still this image of me playing on
the screen. What I had hoped to get from that was the indication that
the people wouldn't mind dancing to an image and that would lead us into
this holograph thing where at a certain point they would actually be
dancing to a simulation of myself or multiple DJs.

The full interview can be found here:
 http://www.technotourist.org/modules.php?op=modloadname=Sectionsfile=i

 Yes, some shameless site-promo, I know! :)

2003-08-28 Thread Robert Taylor
Their second room was definitely something different from the norm.
DJ Vadim played some proper underground hiphop.
Jonathan Moore did an authentic Coldcut mashup of reggae, funk, hiphop, DB and
warped house - Voodoo Ray and Super Sharp Shooter were highlights..
The final DJ was possibly Mario and he played the kind of house that you
wouldn't normally expect to hear at Lost - Osunlade being the only thing my
addled memeory can throw at me.

RE: (313) jeff mills at lost yesterday + free mix

2003-08-27 Thread Gary . Girard

The full interview can be found here:
http://www.technotourist.org/modules.php?op=modloadname=Sectionsfile=i
ndexreq=viewarticleartid=19

Yes, some shameless site-promo, I know! :)

For the record I thought Mills was brilliant (as usual) !!
It doesn't really matter where he went, the main thing is that he came

I don't understand why you felt cheated.
They only showed the DVD twice for about 10 minutes at a time
 - Mills mixed into and out of the DVD segments live. The
publicity claimed that Mills would be previewing his DVD and
that's exactly what he what he was doing - he wasn't
cheating. Only the DVD segments were pre-recorded - the rest
was Mills mixing live, though it wasn't the most inspiring of sets

around then i saw Jeff on the screen, went closer to the

to the video. The music was in time with the video and fader

I remember a night (not that I was there) at The End (London) and The Fuse
(Brussels) where Robert Hood would play in the End and via a satelite
connection, that was broadcasted to the fuse. After Robert Hood, Derrick May
played in the fuse. In the same way that was broadcasted back to the end. So
people (both in the and and the fuse) could see 2 dj´s that night, one live
and one on screen.

Cheers,

If he wasn't DJing then he was pretending to DJ for a couple of hrs!

I must admit I did wonder what was goin on at first when he appeared on the
screen but wasn't actually on the stage, but after a while the lights came
on Jeff waved to the crowd.
What I want to know is why he disappeared for half an hour let Bicknel
take over before returning to carry on?

I don't understand why you felt cheated.
They only showed the DVD twice for about 10 minutes at a time
 - Mills mixed into and out of the DVD segments live. The
publicity claimed that Mills would be previewing his DVD and
that's exactly what he what he was doing - he wasn't
cheating. Only the DVD segments were pre-recorded - the rest
was Mills mixing live, though it wasn't the most inspiring of sets

Lost was pretty cool night no doubt, great atmosphere, better

RE: (313) jeff mills at lost yesterday + free mix

2003-08-26 Thread John Osselaer

The full interview can be found here:
http://www.technotourist.org/modules.php?op=modloadname=Sectionsfile=i
ndexreq=viewarticleartid=19

Yes, some shameless site-promo, I know! :)

| I don't understand why you felt cheated.
| They only showed the DVD twice for about 10 minutes at a time
| - Mills mixed into and out of the DVD segments live. The publicity

Holographs aside, I think this is an OK idea, a modern version of
Kraftwerk's robots if you will - at least he's trying stuff...

 |Ok, it's shameless self-promo, but it might help clearing
 |things up a bit. Here's an extract from an interview I did
 |with Jeff last year around this time.
 |
 |TT: You just mentioned disappearing and reappearing. At Sonar
 |I saw you disappear at some point, but the music kept playing
 |and there were images of you playing records. I was pretty
 |confused by that. Was that done on purpose or did you just
 |need to go to the loo?
 |
 |Jeff: (laughs) No, that was on purpose. It was designed so
 |that at one point the film would take over. At a certain point
 |there was no need for me to be on the stage. Once the film
 |took over I left and stood on the side and watched for my cue
 |to come back up and take over from the film. That was like a
 |test as well, to see if the people would be able to continue
 |on with the party if say something was simulated. That was an
 |experiment. I don't think it worked out so well because the
 |venue was so large that the people in the middle or the back
 |couldn't see anyway. We tried it once before in Tokyo and it
 |was the same thing. At first the people were confused, they
 |didn't understand where I had gone, but the music was still
 |playing and there was still this image of me playing on the
 |screen. What I had hoped to get from that was the indication
 |that the people wouldn't mind dancing to an image and that
 |would lead us into this holograph thing where at a certain
 |point they would actually be dancing to a simulation of myself
 |or multiple DJs.

(313) jeff mills at lost yesterday + free mix

2003-08-25 Thread m a t t [d]
last night's Lost was fantastic as ever... john kennedy played one of the
best sets I[ve heard him do, including attend 2 :) just wish he'd played #1
I would have exploded. plaid did a nice set of messed up electronica, but
it didn't really move the crowd apart from some amazing techno oriented
electronic power funk - if anyone knows what those crazy tunes he was
playing are please let me know! :) steve bicknell played a good set, but
mills was the star of the night - another amazing set, including playing
exerts from his new dvd showing him mixing, and jeff was mixing live into it
and back out again so for a while we were watching the projection of mills
mixing up close :) the crowd were fantatic - really up for it - lots of
great dancing at the front.

we took some pix, check

http://hoc.finevinyl.co.uk/lost

some happy faces in there + a couple of jeff mixing.

when we got back we didn't sleep but carried on partying - I played some
techno and the mix has come out really well, so please have a listen and
give me some feedback - it features some classics and some new stuff, can do
a tracklist if anyone wants it.

the mix is at

http://hoc.finevinyl.co.uk/mix-2003-08-26-post_lost_techno_mix.mp3

about 109 meg in size. the box its hosted on is only 4 mbit, so my
appologies if it's a tad slow.

matt :)
