Musically I thought it was great. For me it was really special to see him
up there, surrounded by lots o' gear, constantly tweaking knobs and hearing
his tracks come out. Lots of tracks from Closer. You would hear a very
recognizable loop and then he would sort of deconstruct it or add on to it,
making it almost a brand new track yet still retain the same flavor. He
would kind of weave in and out of them.

The overall performance lacked some oomph if that makes sense. The
visuals were sort of dissapointing. They had hyped it up to be this amazing
sound and visual experience. Supposedly the technical problems were
pretty substantial. He went on about two hours late. There was talk that
he hadn't run through a thorough sound check once everything was set up at
the venue. Who knows? It was a cool venue, great sound, and nice vibe. I
 left satisfied.

Props to the Mutek crew for putting on a great festival. The events all ran
pretty smoothly. One of the highlights was the Piknik Elektronic. An
outdoor party on Sunday afternoon in a beautiful park overlooking the river
and downtown Montreal with suprise sets from Magda and a live PA from
 Herbert. All for $5.00 nonetheless!

(313) Plastikman live show @ Mutek, Canada - wow

2004-05-15 Thread Robert Taylor

PLASTIKMAN LIVE SHOW TO UNVEIL UNPRECEDENTED TECHNOLOGIES AT MUTEK

Windsor, ON May 13, 2004 - Up until now, Richie Hawtin and his production team
for the Plastikman Live show at Mutek 2004 have kept a very tight lid on the
technology being developed for the show. They have begun lifting the curtain on
a set of technological advances that will alter the course of how electronic
music can be performed in a live scenario. The performance will involve
Hawtin's manipulation and control of multiple tracks of digital and analog
audio, real time generation of a High Definition (HD) visual system, drum
machines, synthesizers, effects and lights.

The Show/The Festival
The event will take place June 4, 2004 in Montreal, Canada as the opening event
to this year's Mutek festival (www.mutek.ca). It will be the first live
performance of Plastikman material since 1995. The performances from that era,
Glastonbury, the Fuk tour, etc, have gone down in the annals of electronic
music history. The Mutek performance will be the only Plastikman live in North
America.

The Music
Hawtin has resampled and re-arranged all of the Plastikman material dating back
to the first Plastikman release, Sheet One (Plus 8/Novamute) from 1993. The
entire catalogue is going to be reworked and performed live on stage, using a
combination of classic machines and new software to meld old and new material
into unique improvised mixes. Working in the studio, Hawtin has experimented
with combinations of classic Plastikman material from Musik (Plus 8/Novamute),
Consumed (Minus/Novamute), along with the new material from Closer
(Minus/Novamute/Paperbag).

The Gear
Hawtin has designed and built an entirely custom MIDI controller incorporating
the features and power of 5 MIDI devices into one. This unit, the CTRL LIVE,
will give Hawtin full real-time control over 128 parameters of audio, video,
lighting, and effects simultaneously.

For additional MIDI control, Hawtin will use an unreleased surface controller
developed by Tactex. The units use the same technology the company developed
for the Canadian Space Arm.

The MIDI system will work with one Apple G5 audio computer, as well as two
massive, industrial custom-built 3D graphics and video PCs, multiple drum
machines, analog and digital synthesizers and a host of analog and digital
effects units. Hawtin will mix all audio using two Allen Heath 14x4x2 Mix
Wizards on stage.

The Software
Several of the most advanced performance-software developers have created
breakthrough features in their software for the Plastikman show.

Ableton has created a special MIDI output feature in their nearly ubiquitous
Live program that allows Hawtin to send detailed data to every connected
instrument, locking every element together to a degree that had previously been
unavailable. New features in Ableton Live also allow Hawtin to navigate his
compositions through the CTRL LIVE device with amazing speed and dexterity.

Toronto-based Derivative has developed a custom-designed real-time animation
and video sequencing environment for the Plastikman performance. Using their
Touch software, Derivative has also programmed MIDI sync modules to lock the
visual effects to Ableton Live, as well as custom software interface for the
CTRL LIVE control surface.

The Images
Touch will synthesize real-time generative High Definition (HD) quality moving
images. The material has been developed in collaboration with an international
team of video artists, designers and animators. Ali Mahmut Demirel, who
directed the video for Plastikman's Disconnect single, based in Ankara,
Turkey has shot hours of new material to be used in Touch. Crush Inc, based in
Toronto, has designed 3D animations, and motion graphics. Honest, based in New
York City has developed morphing graphics, video images and more. Jeffers Egan
has developed real-time video environments and moving images.

PRESS RELEASE

FIRST PLASTIKMAN LIVE SHOW IN 9 YEARS
ANNOUNCED TODAY

Windsor, Ontario

March 2nd, 2004

Richie Hawtin announced today the first Plastikman live show on
plastikman.com. The event will take place June 3rd, 2004 in Montreal,
Canada as the opening event to this year’s Mutek festival (mutek.ca). It
will be the first live performance of Plastikman material since 1995.

Hawtin describes the show as a rare, one-night performance incorporating
multiple media with the artist controlling all parameters of the event.
As with his DJ sets, he will also involve unprecedented new artistic
technologies — all developed and customised for this show.

The following entities are partners in producing the show:

Mutek — www.mutek.ca http://www.mutek.ca
Derivative Inc. — www.derivativeinc.com http://www.derivativeinc.com
Crush Inc. — www.crushinc.com http://www.crushinc.com
Ableton, AG — www.ableton.com http://www.ableton.com
Digidesign — www.digidesign.com http://www.digidesign.com

Turkish video artist Ali Mahmut Demirel, who directed the eye-popping
video for the ‘Disconnect’ (novamute/Minus) single, as well as new media
event producer/curator Kevin McHugh have both contributed to Hawtin’s plans.

Previous Plastikman live shows have achieved almost mythic renown.
Artists, critics, and fans still talk about performances at Glastonbury
Festival, Tribal Gathering, and underground events in Detroit. In the
years since, Hawtin has increased his profile as a DJ and producer,
constantly updating, innovating and pioneering new technologies. The
current Plastikman album ‘Closer’ is out now on novamute/M-nus.

hi Adam-
I also caught him live for the 1st time in 94 at Spastik in Detroit too
(was it really 10 years ago? holy shi*t), but missed Transcendence,
which may have been even bigger? Pre-mp3, pre-Traktor, pre-Ableton,
it was nearly pre-Clinton for god sake. I gotta give him credit it
was a mindblower of a party, the complete experience. I mean at the
time it was about as literally as 'techno' as you could get in the US,
I still may even have the flyer somewhere (how sad am I). There was a
pile of live gear / rack / PA stuff and then if i recall he played
some records. There really aren't parties like that anymore in the US,
at that scale (and venue and volume) in Detroit, that still have a very
underground feel with that level of talent and almost fetishistic
overwhelmingly huge sound systems. I remember his parents were in the
crowd, and there were some contorting +8 dancers up on speakers peeling
off layers of lycra clothing? (do i have the right party here??
yikes, it's all a blur, hahh)

I kept thinking we're all gonna spontaneously combust it was so hot,
packed in, everything was covered in black plastic and dripping in
human perspiration. The sounds themselves felt like they were dripping,
it was intense. I'm sure whatever he'll do now from a performance
standpoint will be completely unique and innovative as that's just his
style, he's not one for nostalgia just for the sake of it. Especially
with the near-freakish control he usually has over every element of the
parties, from technology, audio/visual setups, wanting the latest of
everything, etc.

I haven't cared for his last couple of albums (or straight
jackhammer-like direction of his DJ sets in recent years) as much as
his earlier more sparse material. The first 2 Plastikman albums (Sheet
One and Musik) I think are still much better than the new ones IMHO..
but frankly i'm still glad he brought back the whole Plastikman concept
to life. It's interesting and makes you think, whether you love it or
hate it. It probably all depends on if/when you got into his music
and what tracks you got into (or out of) first...But anyone who can
go to this live set will probably be in for the 'total experience' --
it's no slouchy organization, every detail matters.

2004-03-03 Thread Adam H
It rained _really hard_ that night. I thought I was going to get stuck
on the freeway. The gear he used seemed to take up a garageworth of
space. Definitely pre-mp3-ableton-ni-powerbook.

I remember Terry Mullen playing blackout right before the show started,
then silence, screams, lights on peoples clothing with sunglasses, drp,
more screams, music starts, graphics start on the video screen, total
craziness for the next ~40 minutes. Trancendence was very different.
It was on a floor of a skyscraper right there in downtown Toronto. It
didnt feel underground at all, very big event in a large open space.
No video screen to accompany the music but the speakers emitted an evil
red glow at points. The music had a tighter feel from the Spastik
show.

Geez that happened 10 years ago, I feel old.

Dang kids today with their music collections in little iPods and
studios in little notebooks. Why in my day we walked miles in a bad
part of town with 100 pound record crates, in the snow, barefoot, and
we liked it. If gear couldnt give you a hernia or put you in debt it
was no good I tell you. New fangled computers matching beats for you,
pffft:P

will be the first live performance of Plastikman material since 1995.

Hawtin describes the show as a rare, one-night performance incorporating
multiple media with the artist controlling all parameters of the event.
As with his DJ sets, he will also involve unprecedented new artistic
technologies — all developed and customised for this show.

The following entities are partners in producing the show:

Mutek — www.mutek.ca http://www.mutek.ca
Derivative Inc. — www.derivativeinc.com http://www.derivativeinc.com
Crush Inc. — www.crushinc.com http://www.crushinc.com
Ableton, AG — www.ableton.com http://www.ableton.com
Digidesign — www.digidesign.com http://www.digidesign.com

Turkish video artist Ali Mahmut Demirel, who directed the eye-popping
video for the ‘Disconnect’ (novamute/Minus) single, as well as new media
event producer/curator Kevin McHugh have both contributed to Hawtin’s
plans.

The
current Plastikman album ‘Closer’ is out now on novamute/M-nus.

figuratively. all I gotta say is thank god I was right behind rich and the
whole set up with he rest of the gang when the DPD came through with the
pepper spray and that there was a rather large garage-type door behind us
all leading into the open air =)

I still have all sorts of souvenirs and mementos from that night, including

and the transcendence parties...just as sick. especially the speedy j live

there's some recordings of a Plastikman live set from Tokyo floating
around on P2P. It was a bonus 3 disc from the Japanese release of
Consumed.

Also- the Sickness CD single had a live version of Slak/Krikets taken from
the Spastic party. And I'm prety sure you can still buy it through Mute.

Somewhere I have a cassette recording of the Plastikman set from Tribal
Gathering that I got off of someone back in my tape trading by mail days.

The quality is pretty rough- but the set is ridiculous. Unfortunately- one
of the mechanisms in the cassette broke- and I haven't been able to fix
it. Can anyone help me out with a copy? (Never on P2P either)

actually, now that i think about it, there's one more plastikman track that
i've heard but don't have. it was a RealAudio stream on the previous version
of the m-nus web site - the original blue one. as i remember, it wasn't
labelled by name but was included as one of two links to bonus tracks not
found on the album. one of the links played afrika and the other track was
this one. anyone know what i'm talking about and, if so, what the name of
the track is and if it appeared anywhere?

there are 4 live tracks out there that i know of:

--slak/untitled choir - 1996 plastikprodukt 3 cd - recorded sept 23, 1995

--slac/kriket - 1997 sickness/panikattack 5 cd - recorded at spastik
--the aforementioned pp001 - late '99 or early '00 muzik cd comp - from a
1994 peel live show
--intro/plasticene/untitled acid fill/unedited drum fill - 1998 consumed
japan edition bonus 3 cd - recorded at the liquid room, tokyo, on aug 4,

other non-album plastikman ephemera worth tracking down:

--freek - 1994 plastique b-side recently remixed for de9: closer to the edit
--elektriks - 1994 musik outtake released on the plus 8 vinyl 2x12 and the

--konstant - artifakts outtake from the 2002 kontakt giveaway 3 cd

if anybody's interested in mp3s of the above, hit me privately.

as far as i know, they are the only tracks that have been released under the
plastikman moniker that AREN'T available on the standard cd editions of
sheet one, recycled plastik, musik, sickness/panikattack, consumed and
artifakts. somebody please do correct me if i'm wrong as i'm an admittedly
dorky richie spotter.

of course there are plenty of other hard-to-find richie tracks such as
+8069, the sequel to +8068, which was released only as a promo to a few of
his friends. but those aren't branded as plastikman tracks.

RE: (313) plastikman live

2002-12-27 Thread The Armchair DJ
there are 4 live tracks out there that i know of:

--slak/untitled choir - 1996 plastikprodukt 3 cd - recorded sept 23, 1995
at transcendance, toronto, canada
--slac/kriket - 1997 sickness/panikattack 5 cd - recorded at spastik
--the aforementioned pp001 - late '99 or early '00 muzik cd comp - from a
1994 peel live show
--intro/plasticene/untitled acid fill/unedited drum fill - 1998 consumed
japan edition bonus 3 cd - recorded at the liquid room, tokyo, on aug 4,
1995

other non-album plastikman ephemera worth tracking down:

--freek - 1994 plastique b-side recently remixed for de9: closer to the edit
--elektriks - 1994 musik outtake released on the plus 8 vinyl 2x12 and the
netWorks.1 comp
--kiropraktor - 1994 musik outtake released on the plus 8 2x12 and novamute
3x12
--old skool - 1994 musik outtake released only on the novamute 3x12
--hump - from the first trance atlantic 2xcd comp
--krossover - fuse vs. plastikman - 1999 new year's 3 cd giveaway -
recorded 1993 i think
--afrika (test kut) - 1998 limited 12
--pk and pkamb - 2000 limited 12
--psykik - artifakts outtake released on the 1998 japanese artifakts cd,
sony japan's 1999 future electronica comp and the 2002 kontakt giveaway 3
cd

I picked up an MP3 of Slak and Kriket live somewhere, I'm not sure if it
was from the set at Spastik or not... mostly what I remember from the set at
Spastik was choking on Mace.

Let's hope the hermetic seals hold though, if the tapes of the first Lodge

I can respect the artist who takes that position. You can't re-create a
special one-time environment and sound system and performance and a feeling
w/ a live CD or MP3 file. The performance is more than just sum of the
notes played through the equipment. It's a whole thing that exists for
that moment in space and time, and is the sum of a zillion other factors,
(the crowd, the weather, the smell of the warehouse, your drive there and
home, the lights, your feelings at that time, etc. etc. ) then it's gone
when it's done. There is something more special and visceral about it that
way, I think for both performer AND audience... FWIW.

we play liiive, we don't play off tape - FUSE, Logikal Nonsense

They've been taking this position for ages as well. It seems Hawtin is quite
anti-archivist. More power too them, I say. It's their material ultimately,
although I disagree 100% personally and find myself looking to archives
perpetually. It's not that I don't see where the anti-archivists are coming
from, I just don't see any reason to be so strict, and ultimately stifle the
interests of their fans. Clearly it ain't the same as being there - but I
think everyone knows that, it doesn't mean it isn't a valuable record of the
experience, and ultimately even more valuable as a record of the event to
the thousands who couldn't experience it at all, like our unfortunate
friends in remote places, or our friends in Detroit who never get to see
Mills, for instance. I mean, surely I'm not going to hear [313] cry out in
unison that they don't want to ever hear another recording of Mills. Come
on.

I think Stewart Walker is the best counter-example to this, someone who was
quite hesitant to put a live set online (or on CD) until he had one that he
thought did him justice, and has since archived a bunch of performances, and
does so regularly. I think it speaks to his mastery of performance more than
a shift of attitude, but I could be wrong, and I wouldn't try to speak for
him on that point.

In general, I don't think being so particular about it is fair to a global
audience, and I think that sharing what you've got will only assist everyone
in understanding your artistic purpose. I mean, primarilly we're artists,
and we want to communicate our art as broadly as possible, without
sacrificing that integrity, right? The question becomes if it is a sacrifice
of integirty to broadcast a live show, and I think anyone who has watched
Depeche Mode's 101, or [insert favorite tour footage here], can agree that
it ain't the same, but is an immensely valuable service to fans, especially
when someone like Stewart innovates every set. You want to hear every last
performance, and I think that rather than keeping each one a secret to those
in attendance, you ought to provide as many shining examples as possible to
your fanbase, because they still love it, they still buy your records, and
they want to attend your shows even more. If you are trying to build a
career as a peformer, you need to promote as a performer. Besides that, I
think you need to give the recorded-audience some credibility for their
powers of abstraction. It may not be the same, but it *is* meaningful. Who
cares if it's the same meaning? It never is the same meaning for everyone
anyway.

Again, I mean no disrespect to those that are anti-archivist, because I
understand the impulse, very similar to Matt's explanantion - I just don't
think it's ultimately the right choice. From my perspective, I see
everything the opposite of the Minus camp, and have for a long time. I think
performances should be archived freely, and source material should be paid
for, but ultimately you can understand why each camp wants to protect
something, so that artistry can remain lucrative enough to sustain full-time
artistic committment. Regardless of which side you support, I think it's
essential to maintain artist support, and I doubt hashing this out in a
public forum will reveal anything anymore decisive than previous attempts
have. Besides that, I think we need to look at it all from a somewhat
anarchic perspective. Look at the bootlegging, sampling and live recording
that goes on w/o permission. It's all illegal, and is almost never busted.
Just goes to show that we're all accountable more to our own moral compass
than law or popular opinion when it comes to recording/copying ethics in the
electronic music world.

More important than any of this, just look at what so many of us have
learned from pages like deephousepage.com I mean, that really speaks for
itself. How many times have we wished out loud for a Wizard/Mojo online
archive? Most importantly it can educate those of us that were too young to
enjoy it the first time, and there is nothing wrong with that. If anyone

RE: (313) plastikman live

2002-12-19 Thread Matthew MacQueen
Most importantly it can educate those of us that were too young to
enjoy it the first time, and there is nothing wrong with that. If anyone
here is a trance-hating anti-archivist, I challenge you to exmine what
choice you're giving kids to find the real deal.

I totally understand your argument, makes sense, etc. I just need to state for
the record I'm not an anti-archivist myself (and I realize you weren't calling
me one) :) but I do respect artists who wish to preserve an extremely special
live performance for just that: a live (in the flesh) performance. Artists
have that right!

Should +8 probably release some past live shows in the public domain?
Probably, sure. Of course it suits the fans, feeds their market, etc. But do
they have the right to NOT do that to ones they feel were very special to the
artist and simply of and for that moment ? Absolutely.

Hearing a CD of a show is second best to actually being there, sure. Mills
Live @ the Liquid Room, etc. This is a big planet and we can't go to all the
show's we'd like, obviously (unless your Otto K?). But if it doesn't even
BEGIN to do the actual performance justice, it was just so unique or special or
a part of it's environment, or whatever... then really I can completely respect
the decision of the artist or label not wanting to release it. In fact I
applaud that decision.

peace,
Matt MacQueen

That's a good distinction indeed. We haven't seen anything but Real Video
from the first DEMF, and I think it would be impossible to 'bottle and
preserve' that magic.

Oh, and just so y'all know I'm not just pulling this 'anti-archivist' stuff
out of my arse, I recall when seeing Hawtin give a lecture-type-a-thing
before DE909 in Iowa City, he actually devoted a fair amount of his talk
against the growing tendency to archive, and it's relation to the Internet.
