For some reason I never quite feel like putting those CDs in the player and listening straight through, so I don't usually play them much. But when I do, I'm a sucker for the Eddie Fowlkes, Stacey Pullen (his best track IMO) and Kech & Bonds. The Drexciya's awfully nice too. I like all the tracks, with maybe only one or two exceptions. I'm just not in the mood for it as often as, say a techno album like Metaphor. Revisited B-12's Time Tourist the other day. Lovely stuff... Anyone care to update me on their recent activities? Re: [313] True People: Detroit Techno Comp, Pacou, Rob Hood
Stacey sed: Well his remixes of the covers were definetly great. I feel that his sister's vocals and his production put the original Greatest Dancer by I believe Sister Sledge to shame. I don't think so. Except for the initial curiosity, I would rather have heard the record. Rob was not playing in front of a panel that would be picking apart his music and making connections such as how covers are related to rock sets or if doing covers is innovative or not. Or was he? Kidding, but your presence on this list is testament to the contrary. People think about this music a lot. A LOT. The point is Rob did what he was there to do and he did it extremely well. TRhere's no point in debating your taste. I was wondering what it means that the phenomenon of "covers" have started to show up on the scene, in terms of live sets and you haven't really addressed that by giving me your opinion on this. Now for discussion sake on this list I can see where this topic would come up but to be disapointed in his set for the reasons you have stated seems kind of rediculous...just enjoy the music while ur hearing it and disect it if you want later. Re: [313] True People: Detroit Techno Comp, Pacou, Rob Hood
Interesting and optomistic post, Stacey... I wish I had been there to see Rob Hood, since he put on such a fantastic show at I/o many many months back. I don't see how anyone could have such a disdain for a techno artist doing "covers". Sounds like a homage to the things that make Mr. Hood tick, and I bet it was incredible fun to put that set together. Anyone who likens it to classic rock doing covers and furrowing their brows at it might take things to seriously. It's not like Green Velvet and Farben are both putting out 12"'s of the Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up"... I think it's pretty clever of someone in dance music to do this. As for the dissection of music, this list is often the "later" that you speak of. Since criticism tends to weigh on the side of negative in our culture, it might seem like when someone has a lot to say about a performance, it implies that they disliked it. I'm not sure that's necessarily true. We're all just trying to chat it up. I like this discussion a lot more than drug problems and architecture. Thinking the opposite way, The Dylan Group is an instrumental rock group that covered Aphex Twin's classic "We are the musicmakers" with bass guitar/vibraphone/drums. Very cool... n8 On Mon, 11 Dec 2000 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > Well his remixes of the covers were definetly great. Well his remixes of the covers were definetly great. I feel that his sister's vocals and his production put the original Greatest Dancer by I believe Sister Sledge to shame. Rob did a great job with both his dj set and his live set...it just seems sometimes people are trying to critique the music the deeply that they stop enjoying it. Innovation or not he was playing at a club where he is paid to play music to allow people to have a good time and dance and to what I witnessed he did all that very well. Rob was not playing in front of a panel that would be picking apart his music and making connections such as how covers are related to rock sets or if doing covers is innovative or not. The point is Rob did what he was there to do and he did it extremely well. also, i saw pacou, who was surprisngly very dissapointing. He is definitely a much better producer than dj. Rob Hood, however, was incredible. His dj set was phenominal and his live set was even better; his flawless live performance and the live female vocals were definitely the highlight of the night. Stacey Pullen 8th Wonder (was [313] True People)
In my opinion the mix of 8th Wonder that is on Astralwerks' Beyond The Third Wave compilation well exceeds the mix on the True People compilation. And the compilation is worth the price for the Alan Oldham artwork alone... pw In a message dated 12/11/00 1:31:37 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: >Stacey Pullen - 8th Wonder (this track is a must-have).

There you go, shows what I know. And here I was accusing the little silver box of helping Josh Wink abuse braincells worldwide. (I say this with some affection for Josh as someone who *does* appreciate Detroit techno; Higher State was just an indication that he knows exactly how to get the attention of dancefloors, even if the approach is less than edifying. Now if you want a truly great record, check his "Meditation Will Manifest.") phred

Found it quite recently hee in france, quite cheap too... Really great comp, tons of good stuff even though some tihngs are really disppaointing - and yes, 8th Wonder alone makes it worth it ;-) Gwendal > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Monday, December 11, 2000 5:22 AM > To: R Vincent > Cc: 313@hyperreal.org > Subject: Re: [313] True People: Detroit Techno Comp > > > Hello, > > I believe that this comp came out in 1996 on Sony/React. Betr.: Re: [313] True People: Detroit Techno Comp
Back in the day when this one came out, the UK magazine Muzik came up with an article called the "Detroit Debate" which featured lots of people on the tracklist of the compilation. The good thing about it was, that it provided some background on the tracks these artitsts did. For example: the tracknames of those 2 EFF tracks are the initials and birthyears of his sisters. I was dissapointed at first, but it's grown on me. Some favorite tracks: Eddie 'Flashin' Fowlkes - R.M.F. 60 Stacey Pullen - 8th Wonder (this track is a must-have). Kech & B. Bonds - Zephyr (this was later released on a Frictional record that also had "Bloated") The price of the comp is justified by those three tracks alone. There's also a great Drexciya track, "Davey Jones Locker", Some nice contributions from May, Larkin, Blake Baxter, T-1000, 365 Black and Shake. Hell, just buy it. It's a good comp, and all previously unreleased if I'm not mistaken, although some tracks have been re-released elsewhere since. Re: [313] True People: Detroit Techno Comp
Hey Mike, Well.. I can certainly see people viewing it as a disappointment, but when I bought this comp back in late 96, it became my first who's-who names-to-faces piece of detroit techno. Sentimental value... it's got the stars on it for sure. At the time, the two(three) biggest detroit artists I was getting into were Claude Young and Drexciya. The tracks by both are hideous. Still the worst tracks I've ever heard by them. Not a big fan of Saunderson's E-Dancer either. This comp definately got me into Eddie Fowlkes. He's got two great tracks on there, one of which is this slurpy happy pre-klang IDM track that makes me pump my fist into the air 4 years later. Classics like D. May's "wiggin", Pullen's "8th Wonder" Pennington's "Art of Stalking" Cool stuff by T-1000, Shake, Keith Tucker, ... first time I had heard actual tracks by those 3. Blake Baxter's "where's the love" rocks hard with extremely tactful 303 usage. :) the good old days before all the animal porn, heroin addiction, and Mills/Oakenfold love children. n8 On Sun, 10 Dec 2000 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > Hello, > > I believe that this comp came out in 1996 on Sony/React.
