For the Dancer it might be good to have the song changed every 3-4 minutes
but at 35 yrs Im now a Listerner and prefer to hear the whole song to feel it
as a composition...OTOH a good set is composed in a similar manner..

This is a great question!!!

I think its because the whole notion of the DJ being a creative artist is
lost. The newer DJ's never even thought of creating, they entertain,
"rockstardom", the very thing we rebelled against to begin with...

Instead of "oh, I am going to take this hook, and this break down and create
something new", it has become *exactly* what a wedding or radio DJ or a POP
band does, they play *exactly* what the crowd wants to hear...

The older DJ's, or some of the persistent ones (like myself) find the
creation to be for more interesting, and far more valid. But the problem
here is that this is very hard to communicate to a new DJ. So many times,
that I actually got in arguments with "normal" non techno orientated people
about DJing. They could not understand that it can be more that just
playing records...

any good djs anymore?? ive heard one of your dj sets and it wasnt that
great.
now to get back to what the original question was. just becuse some dj from
betalounge let some of his tracks play doesnt me all djs nowaday do that
shit. look at jeff mills look at dj bone... theres lots of djs that will

Re: [313] the longg dj set

2001-01-30 Thread b. sims

i play on groovetech most every week (have a regular 10 to noon
pst slot on saturdays but travel quite a bit lately so others fill
in.) at any rate, for me, i am definately guilty of playing more of
the song before mixing (and sometimes not mixing at all.) i know i
will get flack from some zealants out there but i do not believe
that every time i step behind the decks i have to produce a mix or
art or whatever. i am presenting music that i happen to want to
listen to that morning. i do not have a chance to really listen to
music during the week, i mean sit down and focus on the music, so i
use my radio time to explore new arrivals and re-fresh on the old
and nelected. of course, i tend also to play songs that i do not
often play out, it is also about context. call me craze, but i can
not wake up saturday morning and pop off 2 hours of dancefloor
pumpers before noon:)

if i felt comforatble with a mic, i probably do at least some of
the time what TP has talked about: playing tracks beginning to end
and talk about the song and the history. personally, i feel a lot
is lost between the legends and whatever is newest and greatest.

cheers.

No, when did I say that?? I said that lately, the notion of the mix has
been down played by playing records for the crowd, as opposed to creating a
new song...

And another thing, and someone brought this up. Play the whole record does
not mean your bad, Vath speaks of that very well I think...

>ive heard one of your dj sets and it wasnt that

First off, I play everything from deep house to trance, with influence from
techno. So, I don't really expect to many people on here to like my sets,
nor do I demand that.

And since when did I say I was anything great?? All I know is that I try to
do something the best I can. But, never once, did I suggest I was anything
remarkable...

Why is it that people are so freakin' irritable?? Jesus, I'm just making
some observations and comments about my profession, I think I have done it
long enough to at least be able to chip is $.02 here and there...

I just like thinking and talking about the music, that's all, chill...

it all depends on the purpose of the mix. personally I wish more radio
shows just did straight tunes, no mixes, or maybe a polite 4 to 16 beat mix
on ends, purely for continuity.

I like to hear the music in its entirety, simply so I can listen to it. I
make myself cd's that aren't mixes, but compilations so I can hear complete
pieces, you often forget what some tracks are like in entirity as you only
play 90 second of a track. You forget intro/outros, or conversely
breakdowns and middle eights/sixteens..

...admittedly when i'm in the mix, if it's techno or electro it's in and
out, if it's more house orientated it's going to be slower mixing

all IMHO.

why don't you ask where that came from first...

And why its written like that...

Its a pretty simple explainantion...

And what do you care anyways??? Just a thought??

Anyways, It's not by my design that those are there, I downloaded half of my
own sets of Napster, with the exception of "Life...", which ended up on
there anyways. The ones that I put on there has simply my agents web
address on there, nothing more. Plus its written in the way I normally
write my name, with the underscore...

The sets with all the name is my manager, who is a good friend of mine,
trying out his "new idea" for marketing. Well, you see how outta hand it
got. Also, the names are what he thought was the artists I used on that,
and other recordings (there are three sets released by him from the Sphere
Offices)...

I personally don't own a single Richie Hawtin record. But he had it pretty
close, especially the Isolee, I was surprised by that because no one in this
area knows that!!!

Anyways, I have been trying to figure out how to fix that issue, but its too
late, so I just chalk it up as a mistake...

BTW, That recording is called "life..." and it was made right here, in the
basement...

And none of those recordings are in anyway "toneshift" recordings, just in
case you used those to try to understand the shift...

Im kinda flattered that I am the point of frustration in your life!!!

The reason why it says [LIVE @ FUSE] is so people find it easier, same with
the artist names...

And I *did* explain why I have it on my files, its because I had to download
the two other ones (both of which are live and bootlegged). "Life..." is
the only one I made for release, which never did do to license problems...

Look, I felt stupid too when I did a vanity search on napster and WHAM, all
that came up. I respect and understand your criticisms, do you really think
I, or any other artist for that matter, would want to appear to come off
like that? As a fake?? I would hope not!!

I OKed this action, and it was a mistake, and it got circulated before I
could go over his house and check it (Hell, I didn't even thinking of
checking it till a week later, I never thought it would be an issue till
later in the game!!;). The main reason behind Sphere putting it there is so
people who might be interested in one artist, or one genre ("live @ fuse" is
in itself a Napster genre;) would find my recordings, three in all. That's
all there is to look into that; it wasn't some devious slanting move, if you
were looking up Saunderson, you *may* find my CD worth a shot. That's why
there these brackets "[*]" around the added stuff, to separate the title and
my name from the artists and that LIVE @ FUSE garbage

We all screw up, I didn't even do this, and I'll say I screwed up. Is that
OK??

I Kinda like that "Life..." CD though, I think I'll listen to it right now!!

Re: [313] the longg dj set

2001-01-31 Thread darw_n
*actually possible 313 question below*

one more time...

It does not say "DJDARWIN LIVE @ FUSE", anywhere, to my knowledge, and that
would indeed be idiotic of me to put that...

if you look, it says, "djdarwin - "life..."
[EMAIL PROTECTED]'sthatifancymyselfto]"

The title is "life...".

Notice how the friggin' name is spelled, would really want to put a "dj"
onto my name??

And plaese, *notice* the damned brackets...

The words in the brackets, I think, clearly show that those are simply
search indexs, notice all the new bands that put similar items next to their
names in order to be "found".

I don't care what the hell you think, but I will readily admit that I let a
bad idea slip away and get outta hand, and I admitted it was my fault for
not over-seeing any "new marketing" plans...

I talked to him (my manager/friend) about this today, since it's becoming
really embarrassing to me, and he reminded me that neither one of us really
knew how napster worked, let alone how fast it spread, it took only a few
days for those three sets to spread (for some reason, only one is dominant,
can't figure this out).

nonetheless, now all you guys who actually are reading this know, if you put
"live @ fuse" as a search index, two things will happen, you'll spread like
wildfire through napster, and you'll get people who can't seem to forgive,
nor understand, freaking out on you, making fun of you without knowing you,
and calling things like baboon, which in its own right is interesting...

Nonetheless, back to some music...

What's up with Cherry Bomb these days?? And what is there story? I always
dug them, but never got the full scoop on who they are...
