(313) Green Galactic 20th Anniversary with John Tejada/Plaid/Pole June 30th

2013-04-29 Thread Greg Earle
I might be the only living L.A. 313'er left, but just in case I'm not ...

This will be really fun, the Grand Performances outdoor event space at
California Plaza is a perfect place to see a gig on a nice Summer evening.

- Greg

--

Green Galactic is thrilled to present Pole, John Tejada, and Plaid at our
20 Year Anniversary Celebration as part of Grand Performances summer concert
series at California Plaza in Downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, June 30, 2013
from 7:00pm to 10:00pm.

Dive into a pool of richly hued sights and sounds as we celebrate 20 years
in business with live sets by three of the world's most respected electronic
music artists. The evening features:

 • The dubby complex rhythms of Berlin-based Pole
 • Visceral experimental soundscapes by Plaid from the UK
 • and the melodic handcrafted Techno of LA’s own John Tejada

This FREE! event will also feature:

• An opening DJ set by Barbara Preisinger
• Projection art by Plaid and Charlene Boehne

Innovative arts and culture promoter Green Galactic was initially created,
two decades ago, on the foundation of electronic music/DJ culture. As we
celebrate 20 years in Los Angeles, we embrace the firm's roots by sharing
three of our all-time favorite artists with this incredibly creative city
in a truly spectacular venue under the stars.

They;re are some here, right ;)

Just stumbled upon a new album being released on Logistic by someone named
Yoshihiro Hanno working under the name RadiQ. Album is called Graffitti
and Rude Boy '67 and it melds click-hop and dub and jazz in a way that I
think Pole has only partially suceeded and with dub processing that I honestly
haven't heard done this well since Basic Channel.

Highly recommended to everyone, and if anyone knows more information about
Mr. Hanno, let it be known.

Speaking of dub, Pole played a live dub influenced set here in San
Francisco last Friday. He even had what looked like a custom made melodica,
the toy keyboard harmonica popularized by Jamaican dub artist Augustus
Pablo. The sound was more roots dub style than when I've seen him
previously. Also much more of a traditional live music set with lots of
solos and silence in between tracks, for better or worse. It was a bit too
slow for my tastes, but entertaining. He also had a Nord Modular keyboard,
a laptop running Logic and some effects pedals (sorry no vintage tubby
style spring reverb unit). Not a bad set of gear to lug across the
Atlantic! Or maybe it's just in his rider. Anyhoo, check it out if its
coming to your town, but don't expect much dancing.

Re: [313] pole show in d?

2000-10-20 Thread William VanLoo
> > hey-any reports on the pole show last night? how was it?

Overall, I enjoyed myself.

The evening started out rough; what was originally billed as a 9:00PM
show ended up with the artists not starting until 11:30PM. This was due
to a lack of European-to-American power convertors, we found out.
Luckily convertors were secured and the show went on.

Burnt Friedman played first; he started with a whimsical pre-recorded
announcement stating that he'd be playing with "10 pre-recorded tracks"
and that "the resulting collision will be the sound you hear". It turned
out he was DJing with 5 separate MiniDisc players. I enjoyed his set,
but it didn't vary a lot. It was very uptempo, which I wasn't at all
expecting (only knowing his ~scape release).

I was really there to see Pole, and Stefan Betke did not dissappoint.
His set was thick, noisy, deep, and utterly involving.

He was playing using a PowerBook, Nord Modular (keyboard version), an
effect box, and the all-important mixer. In general, he was switching
between tracks on the PowerBook, playing riffs on the keyboard, and
doing lots of work with the mixer, bringing in the effects and tweaking
the overall sound. At times he would be playing a riff, tweaking the
sound on the keyboard, and adjusting the effect level on the mixer at
the same time, which was great to watch (who says electronic musicians
aren't visually involving? the video projections of his hands on the
mixer/keyboard were great, IMO).

In speaking with him after the set, Stefan mentioned that all the tracks
he played were from Pole 3, which I don't own (yet). He said he was
running recorded conversations, which he used as a buried-in-the-mix
element on Pole 3, from a MiniDisc player during his live set, and was
using it as a source for his dub delays. Its effect was to add an
element of music concrete, or maybe just full-on noisiness, that was
really impressive to me.

Jan Jenelik, aka Gramm and 1/2 of Farben, played last. Pole mentioned
that part of Jenelik's gear was damaged during flying, but he ended up
playing. By that time in the evening, I was pretty worn out.
Unforunately, Jenelik played material more in the vein of Farben, which
is more uptempo and dancier than his solo Gramm stuff. If he'd played
more abstract, I think I would have been more involved in his set.

As it was, I was worn out, and the steady kick drum underneath his
intricate percussion was just draining me. I called it a night around
1:45AM. All in all, a good show, and a great set by Pole.

> p.s. theorem(live), carlos sauffront, bill vanloo(live) and karl meier

Aww yeah, thanks for the plug. This show should be lots of fun, big
props to list-member Dave Siska for setting it up. It's gonna be my
first Chicago gig, I hope if any listmembers make it out that you'll
introduce yourselves!

> hey-any reports on the pole show last night? how was it?

Good. Very good. Apparently, Farben's gear got damaged, so the show
didn't start til nearl 11:30. Farben ended up playing last, also. I'm
curious - does anyone know if the video installation was a local, or is it
part of their show? It was amazing, whoever put it up.

Friedman started it off, mixing 10 different pre-recorded tracks. Nicely
done dark dubby stuff - I was very pleased by it. I got the impression it
was live, and he was mixing multi-track, but I wasn't watching what he was
doing, so I could be wrong.

Pole was amazing. He played 4 sections, as mentioned. It's impressive how
much music is produced by him tweaking a single knob, hitting a key on his
synth, and waiting for a little bit, then hitting another key. At any
rate, I completely concur with Mike's opinion - the third section was
straight-out funk, as conceived by Pole. Since Farben was still fixing his
gear, us Detroit-types were treated to a fifth section of Pole. It was
just as good as the rest.

Farben, unfortunately, just wasn't the right person to follow
Pole. Although I thoroughly enjoyed what I heard of his set (had to leave,
needed sleep), I just wasn't in the mood for more upbeat, minimal style
music. Still, I liked it. And at another time probably would have been
just as into it as the Pole set.

Great show, in other words.

well i didnt go to the detroit show...but hit up the chicago gig on
tuesday night w/ Farben and Burnt Friedman

Farben was amazing... chilled out techno...very minimal..dubby perfect to
start the night. really got quite funky at times. where else besides
Klang has he put out material?

Burnt.Friedman... i have a couple of his records and I was slightly
dissappointed by the set. first, it wasnt live... he wwas mixing 2
minidiscs back and forth... not as dancy as i would have liked...but oh
well.. it was still mentally entertaining.

pole. wow. played 4 sections of music...for about 45 minutes... very
amazing. i really enjoyed the third section. funky
techno.pole.style. =) i havent bought the new release yet, but someone
told me that he played primarily off of that. i highly recommend
checking out any further dates he has.

it was great to see that many people out on a tuesday night.
props to mike javor and /bin for making another nite go off in

I called and talked with Detroit Contemporary, and they seemed not to know
any details on the Pole show-such as time/tickets etc. They even called the
sound guy for me, but said they'd have to call Sharif (sp) to knows what's
really up

(nothing on the sites as of thursday)

any one (derek or other) have more specific details other than place & line

Pole 3

2000-06-21 Thread Jason Stanley Birchmeier
What does everyone think about the new Pole album? It came out yesterday
in the U.S.

I find it much more abstract, epic and minimal than the first two albums.
The dub characteristics seem to be much more salient while the rhythms
tend to sound too fractured for my taste.

The guy's brilliant though. The texture of this album stands above
anything I've heard in some time.

Any other thoughts?

I remember listening to an amazing Tikiman set on Boombox (www.boombox.net)
upon recommendation from my good friend Sarah SK-1 (Did you make it down to
the DEMF Sarah?). Maybe its still in the archives. As for Monolake, you can
listen to their live set with Kit Clayton at www.monolake.de/realaudio.html.

Hello folks,

I think the link you're looking for is this one : http://www.boombox.net

Have a look in the archives, then the 'electronic' section for a whole load
of amazing real audio and video from the likes of Tikiman, Pole, Kit
Clayton, Porter Ricks, Thomas Brinkmann, a Kompakt Showcase + + + + .
There's also a load of stuff from other genres in the main archive list - A
rather good site by all accounts!!

Currently sat at home (4pm) wondering how many hours I've got to go before I
can tune into the DEMF livestream and feel sick with envy.

Hope the lucky ones are enjoying the final day. My masochistic side can't
wait for the reports!!

Actually I seem to remember a discussion a few months ago about
a website that hosted a plethora of dub-related live sets from the likes
of Tikiman and Monolake to name a few but I cant seem to remember
the URL at the moment. I think Bill Vanloo was the person who

more of the details.

>and while I'm on one...whatz da new pole3 like?

. Pole: cd3 (Matador)
Betke with his third and most advanced album. The tracks on this one
are more developed giving this release more of a classic dub edge as
opposed to his experimental dub sound of previous releases. dont
think the pops & clicks are gone though, they're still there just not
the focus on this one. Probably my favorite Pole album to date.

Also on the dub front:
. Staedtizism comp cd (~Scape)
I know I mentioned this one a few weeks ago but it's still getting
heavy rotation. The tracks from Gramm, V Delay, Sun Electric,
Kit Clayton, and Thomas Fehlmann are still doing it for me. Betke
did a great job in compiling this one as did the musicians involved.

You can hear both releases at:
