also check the italian joint villa out on gratiot between 7 and 9 mile (on the left if going uptown.) great great great food - Original Message - From: Fred Heutte [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, March 23, 2004 10:48 PM Subject: RE: (313) food in tha D No trip to Detroit is complete without a stop in Greektown. But let's face it, the quality varies somewhat. My favorite place is actually the Cyprus at 579 Monroe. And while it's not Greek, Fishbones (the Cajun/seafood place at 400 Monroe) is quite good, and so is Pizza Papalis. But no trip to Detroit is complete unless you also eat outside of Greektown. It's been years since I was at dinner with a Famous Detroit Techno Producer there, but Union Street is a really good place (4145 Woodward). And of course you have the Majestic right across the street (4130 Woodward). A few years ago during the DEMF we had a big crew that went to Armando's on W. Vernor in Mexicantown -- crowded and fun. When you get out past the city line, there are a lot of alternatives. Royal Oak has a bunch of pretty good restaurants, as does Ferndale. The Clock in Hamtramck is legendary, but the food is below- par greasy diner stuff. Dearborn has many choices including the mega-starship of Middle Eastern restaurants, La Shish (I think they have about 8 of those scattered all over the place now, definitely worth going, wish they would open up downtown). And the only halal McDonald's I've ever seen. Just inside the city line at 7511 Michigan Ave there is the Starlite owned by the Josifooski family (that's what it says on their business card here) and I give that my highest honors for holding up a tradition that is dying out, the family diner, and the homemade sausages and pierogies are worth the trip. I have to admit there are lots of places I should have gone to in Detroit over the years, so maybe this year's festival is the time to venture out. Looking for that exceptional BBQ, the really good Chinese places, etc. There's a slew of Mexican and Central American places on Bagley. And believe it or not after all these years I've never eaten at Eastern Market. One up! I have a soft spot in my heart for Lafayette Coney Island, but not my stomach. So I stick to the apple pie and the ambience when I go there :) fred
RE: (313) food in tha D
Not quite near downtown, but on Michigan ave and The Southfield freeway there's Al-Berdouni's(sp) for excellent Arabic food and Rosa's Mexican Resturant on the same block. I used to work at a car audio shop that was there years ago and we ate there daily. Plus there's always American Coney Island on Lafayette/Michigan ave/Woodward right downtown. Didnt someone put together an info page of places to eat etc. one year? There are usually food vendors on the festival grounds. Might I suggest stopping by Jacoby's pub for some great beers and nice people. Cass Cafe is one of my favorites (in the Wayne State area-great veggie menu) When in Detroit eat (if you can): Middle Eastern, Greek, Ethiopian (oh the ethiopian wine!), sould food and Coney Dogs and DRINK VERNORS!! ppl always look at me strange when i tell them my comfort foods are hummus, baba ganouji and greek salads (extra beets, hold the olives, dressing on the side...and dont forget the saganaki) but hey- why eat that when you could have white castle? :) d np:shawn rudiman, mix cd --- Logic7 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Not quite near downtown, but on Michigan ave and The Southfield freeway there's Al-Berdouni's(sp) for excellent Arabic food and Rosa's Mexican Resturant on the same block. You can't get Ethiopian in Detroit any longer, have to go to Windsor (via Tunnel Bus) to Marathon, but the price is right and the food is great. Noteworthy downtown spots include: Cafe D' Troit (on Library street) for good sandwiches, cheap Odawala bars, and free wireless internet; Detroit Beer Co. (on Broadway) for excellent micro-brews and nice eats for all tastes. i still have a document someone sent out one year. the first half or so is obviously outdated, but it gets relevant with restaurants/places to see/shop etc. towards the bottom http://datavibe.net/~doris/demf.rtf On Tue, 23 Mar 2004, diana potts wrote: Didnt someone put together an info page of places to eat etc. one year? Folks on this list who know me know that I'm as passionate about food as I am about Techno. Some links and thoughts categorized: On Site: Hart Plaza underground has a few good choices while you're at the festival, but the atmosphere is not about food. Try the Chicken Shwarma. Don't expect anything satisfying if you have a press pass for freebies. Curries: Chicken Curry at the Small World Cafe is legendary to art students and Web workers. Basement of the International Center near CCS. http://www.metrotimes.com/guide/restaurants/place.asp?id=2619 Deli: The debate rages on, classic style at Russell St. http://www.metrotimes.com/guide/restaurants/place.asp?id=3112 vs. funky UK style at E.P.H McNally's in Corktown http://www.metrotimes.com/guide/restaurants/place.asp?id=3947 Funky Pub: Center Street has been remodeled, in slightly slicker fashion. Food not as good as pints, but fun and literally underground. http://www.freep.com/entertainment/newsandreviews/club3_20001103.htm Raw/On Your Own: If you like it raw, or just trust your own devices, PLEASE spend Saturday morning at Eastern market. It's Detroit's largest classic produce marketplace, and hands-down the best way to people-watch Detroit's diversity. Barter for a flat of strawberries, steal a grape, get more bell peppers than a dollar should buy. Don't miss Rafal Spice Co., or R. Hirt. Jr. for the best cheese selection in the Metro Area (1 lb. cuts only) http://www.easternmarket.org/ Shouts out: rasta wings at Union St. (be prepared), two up at Lafayette Coney Island, quiche and wine at Twingo's, and potato pierogi with sausage at Polonia in Hamtramck. BBQ: I'm very biased here. Assuming Linda and I are in town this year, there's a good chance I'll arrange for a pre-festival list-meet barbecue again Friday Night at my house in Royal Oak. More info later, but let me know if you want to make it. Dennis--are you hosting a pre-party too? (ob313: is anyone else finding US domestic releases of good techno CD's slowing to a crawl?) -- Ian

Don't forget the Clique Diner (at the front of the Shorecrest) for the best breakfast grill in Detroit! I have to agree La Shish in Dearborn is the best for Middle Eastern food.. I have a hard time walking outta there! ;) Mumma's Kitchen(?) for Soul Food, ribs, corn bread and the peach cobber are droolicious! Pretty much any mexican food joint in Mexican Town. Oh, and don't forget to stock up un Faygo Red Pop ;) Peace, Patrick. At 12:11 AM -0500 24/3/04, Ian Malbon wrote: Asian additions follow...
