It's true
Detroit is a great city to ride in

I would not use a high end expensive bike though, some of the roads are
worse than some trails I've been on.
consider giving these guys a call or e-mail to set up a bike.

they take old bikes and fix them up cheap or free if you volunteer
they would probably let you rent one

kind of freaked me out a bit at first because living in the UK,
especially in Liverpool, people don't tend to say hello to people they
don't know, but in Detroit, there is a strong sense of southern
hospitality, people say hello to one another as they pass by, in
elevators, on the streets, everywhere you go.

Just as in every other city, there are places you wouldn't want to
ride your bike, as it gets a bit dangerous, but during the daytime, I
tend to not worry where I ride, just after dark I try to be cautious.
People here do tend to bring there bikes into their apartments, so I'd
suggest speaking to your hotel to see if they have an inside storage
 space for bikes.

Bike riding in Detroit has become more and more popular, as the gas
prices are very high. I tend to see 4-10 bike riders a day at the
minimum in the summer and I work a 11-5, so I'm sure I miss the
majority of good biking hours. It's a major city, so yes, you will be
riding amongst a lot of highrises and parking lots, but theres also
parks, the river walk, the graffitti mile (which will hopefully be
renovated enough by DEMF you can ride from the lake front to Eastern
Market). Detroit's very spread out, so you shouldn't expect to ride
from downtown to Record Time Roseville for an outing, that would end
up being a 20+ mile journey roundtrip. There are very cute
neighborhoods that are a good ride-through, such as Woodbridge, which
is about a 10 minute ride from Hart Plaza.

I'd suggest a guide, though, for anything your doing in the city,
especially if you've never been here before. If your interested in a
bike tour around the city, I'd be willing to do a tour on the Saturday
from noon till 2. Let me know.

I had a look at Detroit on Google earth, and it looks like there's a huge
green belt almost between the city center and the suburbs, and the city
centre is comprised of masses of huge empty vacant lots. It looks weird for
a City. Is everything in the center on a large scale, or are there areas of
old housing and row shops etc...On the bike would you be cycling between
 high rises and carparks?

Kevin Saunderson has played five times, and Mike Grant and Mike

WTF on saunderson 5 times, grant and huck deserve to play every year!

hmmm, im actually not so sure about that. i remember people getting
lots of longer sets earlier, these past couple of years many people
have been restricted to only 1 hour sets. i dont know if there have
definitely been more performers recently, but it feels like it is
possible with such short set times.

there are cats all over the place in detroit! but even more
importantly than the actual detroit guys that they book, i think the
detroit related artists have been consistantly going down to the point
where many people playing probably dont even care that they are in
detroit as opposed to any other city.

Agreed - there is no shortage of Detroit artists available. Barring that,
there is certainly no shortage of artists directly linked to Detroit and
the surrounding areas (artists on Planet E, from Windsor, Ann Arbor, etc)

okay guys, try not to hurt yourselves ;)

say you have 5 stages from noon-midnight for 3 days every year. that
is 180 performance hours each year. now, for the early years, let's
say average set lengths were 2 hours. that gives you 90 2 hour
performances. assuming each one is by a different performer, that is
90 performers. now lets say for the more recent ones that the average
set length decreased just a slight bit to 1.5 hours per set. that now
gives you 120 1.5 hour performances. assuming each one is by a
different performer, that is 120 performers with only a small change
in average set times. and if the total number of detroit artists
remained exactly the same each year (for sake of argument, let's go
with 30 per year) the percentage of total artists who are from detroit
would change from 33.3% in years with 90 artists to 25% in years with
120 artists.

this was in response to you saying You think the overall number of
performers increased? They've consistently had 4 stages sometimes 5
throughout the years, same hours too.. simple math would tell you
thats not humanly possible... except that simple math shows that it
is indeed very possible to have more performers by just shortening the
length of each set. and since the published set information is not
really reliable, it may be impossible to actually guage whether or not
the set lengths are shorter, but it seems to me over the past 2 years
especially there have been a lot more 1 hour sets than there were in
years past.

going to the area several times.

Then again, the sound quality is so murky in the underground area, I
might not have realized it was him playing.

I hope the Paxahau group do something about the sound in that area. Its
a waste of good talent to have DJs spin there. I've never been inspired
to linger in that area, even for DJs I've gone there to see, because the
sound quality is so awful.

No - you'd have known it from a ways off.
They had the stage set up so as soon as people came off the entry ramp
and turned right, they faced it. It seems like there's a little less
bounce on the sound down on the floor when it's positioned like that.

(still horrible, nonetheless - although Deepchord sounded good down there!0

actually, you didn't. I know at least Autechre, Kit Clayton, Titonton
and myself played the second year at the underground stage. ;)

Looks like most of 2001 was omitted; and yet Kenny Larkin is on there
4 times.. did he really play 4 times?

the facts:

only 114 (36%) of the 315 individual performers over the last eight
years (perhaps excluding 2001) have been from the detroit area
of the 48 or so who have performed more than once, 38 have been from
detroit (80%)

Kevin Saunderson has played five times, and Mike Grant and Mike
Huckaby have each played four times.

4 times.. did he really play 4 times?

that would be ideal, yes, but i'd bet that what has really happened is
that the overall number of performers has increased, while the detroit
representation has stayed about the same. and, realistically, i think
the problem is that there are just a finite number of people djing and
making music in detroit. hence KMS getting booked a ridiculous five
times. it is a crime, however, that rob hood has only been booked
once. and derrick and jeff have only played once as well.

it might be finite, but there is still room for alot of great people
who havent played as well as repeat performances by some of the better
ones.

miss closed out the festival twice, 03 and last year. derrick has
played at least 2 or 3 times that i can think of. that list was not
exactly accurate i guess.
