Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

Neil Rushton used to be A+R? for Network records I think. Really don't know
if he's still around.
He was also responsible for the Retro Techno LP, and the two Biorhythms
compilations.
Him and John McCready were instrumental in bringing Detroit Music to these
shores (UK) in the first instance.
John McCready is still around, he's a freelance journalist, the last few
things I've seen by him were in the Face and the Guardian/Observer.
He still lives in Manchester, I see him in the second hand shops from time
to time.
He's an excellent journalist, I don't think I've ever read anything by him
that wasn't interesting.

btw. I got my copy of that Techno2 LP in Woolworths! for (I think) £2.99.
They had a big promo on it when it came out.
Seems weird that now!

Subject:[313] TECHNO 2: The Next Generation

Last week I received my vinyl copy of Techno 2: The Next Generation which I
won on Ebay recently. I am still truly impressed by the quality of the
tracks, they are all good!

Did, a part from "I believe", any of these tracks see the light of day on a
seperate release? Of where they produced especially for this compilation?

Also, this compilation was compiled by Neil Rushton. But what is he up to
these days? Is he still in the music biz?

thanks,

W

yes I remember 6x6 and Network "Back 2 Back Classics" resissues, (used to say
"remasterd with love") some I think even on colored or maybe clear vinyl,
classic Model 500, Mayday and Reese tracks. Not sure if any had been
previously unreleased mixes but I'd tend to doubt it. ANyone remember these ?
I saw a fair share pass thru RecordTime, who also did a good job of stocking
the Network "Retro Techno - Detroit Definitive" comp, was always up on the wall.

Neil Rushton was also an old Northern Soul DJ/collector, which also helps
explain his historic affinity for all things Detroit even before the Techno!
comp. came out and he really got more involved with A&R for Network records.

i have two, both clear vinyls, i think they have "the chase", "groove
that won't stop", "don't lead me" and one more track i can't recall now.

6x6 did release good house back in the days.. some inner city too -
especially i remember the ltd edition chez'n'trent remixes of "share my
life", 10" ltd golden-colored one-sided "ahnongay" and others.

There was a new beat version of Rock to the Beat by "101" that was on some
various new beat and early "acid housey" type comps. (Subway records?)

Songs 1989. There's prolly a few other versions i imagine. It actually
credits Saunderson-Echols as the writers. Cool!

yeah, i remember those too. Network also did a Retro Remix series. i dunno
how many of those were released. i've got just the one, Cerrone
"Supernature", clear vinyl (natch!), with the original version plus a coupla
remixes from Reese.

101's "Rock to the Beat" was on "This is the New Beat" (can't remember the
label - the tape is long-since lost), and I think it was just a cassette/CD
release??? This very well may have been the Subway records release. I
haven't seen my copy in at least 10 year though, so my details may be off a
bit.
