RE: [313] modern music in baltimore - opinions

2002-07-08 Thread FC3 Richards
Modern Music in my opinion was way better then YoshitoshiBUT...when i
was shopping in that area of the country for records Deep Dish had just
taken over the store in Georgetown, and had removed everything from the
store, and it was going to take them a while to get back on track. If they
have gottenthe store back to where it should be, I don't know...we will have
to see. Also, it always seemed to be worth it more to shop at 611 in
Philly...I would drive from an hour south of DC to shop there.

hey for anyone who's been to it --

how is modern music in baltimore as far as techno is concerned? good
selection? good range? none of the above? i've been there once or twice
but i can't really remember what the deal was with the recs (i can only
remember what the store looks like).

just wondering if it's worth the trip for a dc'er to roll up there, so if
anyone knows enough to compare it to yoshitoshi, by all means please do so.
i think yoshitoshi is pretty decent if you're looking for techno, but then
again, it's really the only place that's local for me that sells any
techno at all, so i don't really know how good it is compared to other
stores (dc has tons of great record stores, just none of them really sell
techno -- too bad i don't live in detroit, heh heh).

anyway i think going to the store is *so* much cooler than mailorder, so if
anybody knows the scoop on MM, please don't be shy and give me your opinion.

thanks,
champ

Can you get a lot of the stuff that people mention on the
list at 611?? I haven't been over in a bit, and worse yet
I know someone who works there and never thought
to ask if they have some of the stuff, until this thread
came up...

I drive the 2.5 hours from D.C. to Philly to shop at 611 (sometimes to ONLY
shop at 611) as much as I can. They have a wonderful selection of techno, a
much broader range than Yoshitoshi, and a good backstock. The guy I talked
to last time I was there (ack don't remember name) said that they will order
records for you, hold records, and/or if you drive up and they don't have
something in stock but will be getting it, would let you call in and then
ship it. My favorite non-NYC record shop. BUT, in the last couple trips I
made to 611 it seemed their techno section was shrinking, but no one who
worked there seemed to want to talk about it. I'd definitely go check it
out though.

Re: [313] modern music in baltimore - opinions

2002-07-08 Thread diana potts

Hmm..611 has yet to impress me for some reason.
Perhaps because I'm usually shopping for more
non-straight forward techno. I've always thought their
glitch, IDM and micro house section needed some work.
Everytime I've gone in there recently jungle has been
blaring from the ceiling. 612 isn't what it used to be
either. It still feels like 'just another record
store' to me still.I've yet to have my moment of vinyl
hunting connection there. That moment when you find a
record you've been looking for and say 'this store is
great!'.

AKA music in Philly has a large selection of used
CD's and a mixed selection of records. It's more
focused towards a mix of punk/techno and hip hop. I
bought a Ghostly(Daniel Wang) and a Roots Manuva
record in there the other day.

just my recent observations
(of a city that I'm in looove with btw:))

They will try to get anything there for you. They have a large selection of
Detroit records including Jeff Mills and Rob Hood. +8 and Probe too. They
have alot of out of print records sitting in the store that no one has
picked up yet. I recently purchased 5 copies of the first Spawn record
(Prob #3) from there via mail order. 4 of the copies were still sealed.
That record has been out of print for years...

Re: [313] modern music in baltimore - opinions

2002-07-07 Thread Phonopsia
Modern Music is *OK*. Better'n DC, for what it's worth... You can
occasionally find some older gems (like in the discount bins @ Yoshi Toshi),
but generally, I think you should either get Yoshi Toshi to order new stuff
for you or shop online. This is the conundrum we're all asking ourselves
about, and my answer has become Satellite + Groovetech + Vinyl Junkies. I
think most locals who focus exclusively on techno use a combination of Yoshi
Toshi and Groovetech/Satellite. I'm a bit broader than that, and frankly,
Yoshi Toshi is overpriced and understocked.
