Hello,

Does anybody have any recommendations for music mailing lists that are
interesting and informative? I am looking for something that covers 313,
ambient and IDM without a lot of OT opinion posts, and other gratuitous
traffic that seems to plague this list. Something web based would be nice as

well, something like I Love Music, but with more electronic content.

As much as I love this list and the people that I have met through it, it is

taking up to much of time time for too little information.

Take care,
mt

Actually, if there is a mailing list that represents exactly what I am not
looking for, it is the [EMAIL PROTECTED] list. ;)

To be even more specific, what I am looking for is a list that is pretty
broad in range, something that encompasses the whole of electronic music. I
am looking for a list that will discuss Vladislav Delay, Electric Tones
Records, Edgard Varese and Derrick May during the course of a single day.
Basically, a big mailing list that covers the whole of electronic music and
is more content than chatter.

I want a list with more discussions about why Ionisation was better or worse
than Deserts, what is happening with obscure amsterdam IDM labels, and what
were the 12s to pick up this week. Ideally, it will be low traffic high
content.

Sound so good I'm fairly doubtful it exists! :) Lists (usually) consist of
people and people have tendency to post ads, rants, greetings and
opinions... one solution would be strict moderation.

There's also the question, if nobody's doing it, why not start one?

You might try idm-m, which is *moderated* by Lance McGannon and hosted by
Yahoo groups.

IDM @ Hyperreal is usually glutted with a far worse signal to noise ratio
than 313. Not always, but often.

The Wire run their own mailing list. I'm not sure if it's as eclectic as
the mag (where you can find artists of the calibre/diversity you mention,
sometimes all in the same issue). May be more what you're after.

I picked up the Vladislav Delay: Naima cd on Staubgold a while back, still
haven't had a chance to listen to it, let alone review the thing. Seems
like he's sourcing the Anima material from his last release as VD for this
live extemporization. Love the credits: vocals: girlfriend

Microsound is good for discussion of theory, politics/philosophy of music
as it pertains to Microsound type excursions, but it will not wander afar
from those fields save for the rare clicky IDM topic. Kim does tend to keep
a good hold on it in terms of spam, etc. I'm not sure it will fit the
broad range you mentioned below - in fact, I'm certain it will not. I
still say idm-m is your best bet. Lance tends to keep the static down and a
lot of music gets treated with a lower volume than IDM - and far less
flamebaiting. No ads, FS lists, etc. are allowed.

Just last week the topic was about race and detroit techno, mostly to do
with Juan Atkins and the XLR8R. That's pretty broad ;)

True enough, but from the time I have been on Microsound (since not too
long after it started), that's the exception rather than the rule. That's
probably the first time any real discussion took place concerning 313 which
I recall. Some varieties of IDM are normal fodder there, but idm-m will
cover a lot (save the philosophizing) that Microsound covers as well as
IDM, old school and 313 (although nothing I have found is as in depth as
this list on that front - Lowlands, if you speak the language, might get in
the neighborhood) and even the occasional retro thread. Additionally,
Microsound can be a pretty high volume list. It is an invaluable resource
for that specicfic genre - especially if you are into MAKING music.
