Re: (313) Aarron Carl has passed
This is absolutely heartbreaking news, I've been offline for a few days and can't quite believe what I am reading. It's so tragic that this illness could develop and take him so quickly. I suppose the one silver lining to such a dark cloud is that he didn't have to suffer months of painful tests, treatments and uncertainty. I've always loved Aaron-Carls music, fromt the first Metroplex release that turned me on to him through to the excellent Warmth compilation earlier this year. His sound and his voice were so unique and such a breath of fresh air, and everything he did had a pure vivacity about it. 'Hateful' in particular has never been far from the front of my collection since i bought it. The couple of times I spoke to him he was extremely friendly and funny, and of course the time I saw him play in Detroit he was superb. I regret only seeing him play that once, and I had been very excited about his planned gigs in London and Vienna later this month. So sad that it won't be now. Rest in peace. I am now officially pissed that not a single promoter (so-called for lack of a better term) in Columbus Ohio would take me up on the offer to have AC play. I am also very sad that he and I only got to hang a few times. He was impressive, and he was a fantastic person to talk to. I respected him for years...and will miss him terribly. Detroit, and the world will continue on, but there will be a place reserved in my heart for Mr. Ragland. fbk p.s.- I've learned that this is a cruel world, especially over the past 3-5 years...but remember that with each breath you take. Re: (313) Aarron Carl has passed
Don't have anything to add to the discussion except rest in peace... I did not have the pleasure of knowing him personally, but I always enjoyed listening to AC.
Re: (313) Aarron Carl has passed
Nobody who was there will ever forget Aaron-Carl's truly triumphant performance on the main stage at the festival, and his shout outs to his family and friends. He had an unquenchable drive to express himself and a gift for making people feel good. I first ran across his music in 1997 when his remix of Gerald Mitchell and Theresa Springer's Round Round came out on Simply Soul -- and still play it today, it has that little extra that punches through. He was adventurous in his producing and his DJing, restlessly crossing genres to find the elusive sweet spot, and he often found it. On a memorable night in 2007 I heard him DJing both at McCarthy's (to about 3 of us in the music room and a handful of people in the bar) and then a very different scene early in the morning at the Works where he tore it up (but to be truthful, his McCarthy's set was better!). But don't let me tell the story, let the man himself: http://aaroncarl.blogspot.com/2007/05/demf-and-all-things-relatedhtml We have lost a great one. I want to thank Cliff Thomas for saying it so much better. We are blessed that Aaron-Carl was one of us here on THIS list. And in his own funny, fierce and fragile way, he always represented for Detroit. peace Fred
