Re: [313] Italo disco top fives anyone?

2002-06-22 Thread Matthew L. Thompson
Ah wow, now there's a name I haven't heard in a long time... course, it's
been at least 2 or 3 years since I last dropped by Gramaphone, but I'm glad
to hear that Andy is still in the business there. Seems like I was seeing
him in there less and less in recent years... I'm not sure if that's because
he took on some other things that were filling up his schedule, or whether I
was just overlooking him cuz he's such a short little guy. ;) It still
remains one of my all-time favorite record shops, but the traffic and
parking (lack of) in that whole area tends to add a slightly tainted flavor
to what is otherwise a wholesomely enjoyable experience.

i'm late but this is still in my inbox so here's some favorite italo (not
necessarilly a top 5, but up there) off the top of my head:

gary low - you are a danger
(edit out gary's vox but keep the girls'!...you a dange, you a
strange..)

change - angel in my pocket
(only the first 1'30, which is like sinister tense kano...a bootleg edit
vers needs to be done!)

gobliin - flashing
(more proto-techno than disco i think..taken from the tenebre soundtrack)

doctor's cat - feel the drive
(the single has a great instrumental version approaching moroder on the
flip, plus the vox vers is great too)

automat - droid
(italo before italo was italo! covered umpteen times, and apparently
appeared early on as the theme to a brazillian tv news show...nice!! the
original still my favorite, so raw there is blood on the beats!)

and of course casco, charlie, kano, robotnick, scotch, etc are also way up
in my tops as well!

Art Bell, the late night talk show host who does a lot of stuff on EVP's,

the background behind different segments. Not quite as rare, i know, but
kind of funny for 2002.

As usual late to the party here, but I loved reading everyone's top 5's...
plenty in there that I'd never heard of. but here's my top 5-10-whatever. I'm
sure I've mis-spelled some of these

Alexander Robotnik - Problems d'Amour (used once in a Detroit WJLB TV
commercial!)
Scotch - Penguin Invasion
Lime - Angel Eyes (does that count?)
Kano - Holly Dolly (the blueprint for Shari Vari !! also I'm Ready)
Massimo Barsotti - Whole Lotta Love
Claudio Simonetti - College
Firefly - Love is Gonna Be On Your Side (thanks Otto)

and chicago WBMX favorites like:
Ris - Love N' Music
Gino Sioccio - I remember (and also Dancer, more overtly disco)
Trilogy - Not Love
D'harma - Plastic Doll
My Mine - Hypnotic Tango (which Carl sampled for 69 'sound on sound')
Klein MBO - Dirty Talk
Taffy - I love my radio (about as cheesey as they come, but somehow still
lovable)

peace

yeah, if anyone is a connaiseur, let us know

here are some rather obviuos choices. although i live pretty close to
italy, i still have to find a good source for italo disco, to be able to
go through the myriads of mostly _very_ cheesy releases to find the good
ones.

n.o.i.a. - do you wanna dance (sado mix) - zyx
a.robotnick - computer sourir - fuzz dance
scotch - penguin's invasion - zyx / il discotto
gay cat park - i'm a vocoder - romem 2 (bootleg, now available)
the stuff on danica records

some others i've never heard, but which are very sought after by chicago
oldschool heads and played by m.geist, d.wang and t.parrish:

capricorn - i need love
night moves - transdance
pineapples - come on closer

ciao
armin

for those who are interested and not subscribed to kompakt, hardwax,
rushhour etc (who isn't?:) -- peaches prunes by nightlife unlimited,
the killer track off mustang lt, is now available on bootleg too (don't
know if it is the exactly same edit though).

The funny thing is the last Saturday I played at a party with Mike
Mareen.
He had a live performance but I played lot of 80's stuff and italo disco
too.
One of my faves are:

K. Barre - Right by the moon
My Mine - Hypnotic tango
R. Bais - Dial my number
Danny Keith - Keep on music
Laban - Love in Siberia
The Twins - Love system
DJs Project - Vision of love
Alan Ross - Valentino Mon Amour
Chris Luis - The heart of the city

and lot of others.

For those who care here is my site devoted to 80's

It wasn't updated for a long time but you can find there some
informations and links to other sites.
