Hello Chicago-area 313 friends- Just one more final reminder here about our JACKSON event this evening… With this one happening to coincide with the first day of Pitchfork Festival festivities, the team behind the JACKSON series is floored to present a night that's sure to satisfy your need for paranoid electronics. Ersatz Audio/Thrill Jockey artists, the Detroit-based electro punk stalwarts ADULT. take to the decks for an exclusive dj set for JACKSON. Their signature integration of drum machines & analog synths with electronic/punk elements has defied categorization, and these undefinable points of influence are recalled whenever they tear through their thoroughly entertaining dj sets! Also just added to the bill are former Weekend Records co-horts and Chicago mainstays DJ JIM MAGAS, DJ BEAU WANZER and DJ JORDAN Z., contributing to what is sure to be a memorable night on the Sonotheque soundsystem! ADULT. [Thrill Jockey, Ersatz Audio labels - from Detroit] ADULT. began releasing albums in 1998 under the pseudonym "Plasma Co." Initially, the band members were uncredited and not publicized, but by the time Anxiety Always was released, ADULT. was listed as husband-and-wife team Adam Lee Miller and Nicola Kuperus. Miller and Kuperus are also the founders of the ERSATZ AUDIO record label. ADULT. gained popularity while touring constantly in the United States and releasing all of their material independently. They toured with Trans Am in 2002, and in May 2003, the band made its first headlining tour in the United States; gigs across Europe followed soon after. ADULT. have remixed other artists, notably Felix da Housecat, Fischerspooner, A Number of Names, The Faint, Erase Errata and Bis. ADULT. have continued work on a slew of projects, notably their silent-experimental-short-horror film DECAMPMENT, the accompanying DECAMPMENT TRILOGY 7" series, and a 4 song EP entitled "Let's Feel Bad Together,” all of which was released throughout 2008. They'll be playing a expectedly killer DJ set this evening for you. Expect everything. :: local support DJs :: DJ JIM MAGAS (aka MAGAS aka JAMES MARLON MAGAS aka "electronic warlord of Chicago's blown-out wasteland") In 1999, Jim Magas, with no knowledge or background in electronic music or its production set out to become a one-man force in electronic rock. Beginnings were shaky as Magas struggled to achieve the new sounds he was hearing in his brain. How could he make it more powerful? Magas began honing his new craft on the same stages that he once commanded as singer of LAKE OF DRACULA and COUCH. MAGAS' raw charm attracted the attention of Detroit's ADULT, who released BAD BLOOD and FRIENDS FOREVER on their Ersatz Audio imprint. At Ersatz headquarters, MAGAS got a crash-course in analog synthesizers and production. With a new improved sound and a couple of records under his belt, Magas began performing across Europe and North America, playing clubs, festivals, squats, basements, lofts and the occasional Tastee Freez parking lot. In between, MAGAS worked on remixes for BOBBY CONN, LES GEORGES LENINGRAD, ARTHUR "Planet Rock" BAKER and RA-X, building up his Wizardlook studio piece-by-piece. By the time MAGAS was set adrift by the hiatus of ERSATZ AUDIO, he had already built his studio to a point where he and was able to respond with his most powerful and individualistic solo work to date: MAY I MEET MY ACCUSER. Magas had finally achieved a sound that he had been striving for. Three years later, now in full command of this heavy new sound, MAGAS returns with his most turbulent and concise solo work to date: VIOLENT ARP. All songs were recorded at Wizardlook and once again mastered by former LAKE OF DRACULA partner WEASEL WALTER, this mini-LP on Punch Records will shake you in a new kind of way. - DJ BEAU

Was just watching the trailer for the new CG Appleseed movie being produced in Japan and noticed mentions of Carl Craig vs Adult and Akufen among other electronic "artists" (Jokenfold) in the soundtrack. http://www.apple.co.jp/quicktime/trailers/appleseed_large.html Hadn't seen it mentioned before on-list, so apologies if it's been covered already. El Guapo were very tight. A good 3-piece, with everyone playing lots of different instruments, and a very healthy dose of electronics on-board. Both El Guapo and Trans Am used a Nord Lead 2, and seemed to have an awful lot of fun with the wooden pitch-bend knob. We only caught the last few songs of the first set, but I'd definitely go to see 'em again. ADULT was ADULT. Not too much to say. Lots of tight electroclash in their uniquely punkish way. It was a lot of fun to see them live, and hear some new material. Does anyone know what song has really fast vocals and every verse end with "Stop"? That was a really nice track, and I didn't recognize it. Their music really carries over well to a live performance, even if it's very laptop-driven, probably because they're both obviously still doing something. Trans Am really stole the show though. They opened up with 2 drummers and 2 keyboards, then pretty much everyone switched instruments throughout the show. The drumming was really energetic throughout, and the more-than-healthy dose of Nord was beautiful. It would have been interesting to see the same show in Detroit too, since the home towns are inverted for ADULT and Trans Am. I think maybe 30 people in the fairly large audience knew who ADULT were here. It was a very indie-rock crowd. Re: [313] Concert last night: ADULT.
Perhaps they should've played Silent Property to make the point a bit stronger? Anyways, I think a lot of their attitude stems from disgust about the whole electroclash hype. Here's the article about it: http://www.eye.net/eye/issue/issue_06.13.02/thebeat/adult.html I guess I can understand that they're afraid of a backlash against all artists painted with the electroclash marketing brush (though "electroclash sucks" just doesn't have a good ring to it), and that a number of artists are jumping on the bandwagon before they've developed their own sound (or can even do a live show), but I think the people who were pushing this sound before it became popular will continue to have a following even after everything plays out. Looking forward to hearing them play in TO tonight... g On Friday, June 14, 2002, at 03:56 PM, armin holzgethan wrote: subtle irony, i suspect [EMAIL PROTECTED] schrieb: I was there. RE: [313] - Adult Only # 12 and 313?
Also, Ladbroke was the name of the race track that recently closed down just outside the city limits. Ladbroke DRC to be precise. I think this is probably just coincidence, as I doubt there would be any reason for an Oak Park horse track to be significant in the title of an import house record. Good tune, though-- I should dig it back out of the crate... haven't played that one in damn near a year. I was curious about the same thing, though, when I heard it. [313] - Adult Only # 12 and 313?
Well once again I can't sleep, and as I often do when that happens I started playing some records. The last record I pulled out was... Vinyl Line West Station Adult Only AO 12 (though it says AO11 in the run-out) I usually play the B side which is a nice smooth house cut co-produced by C. Carrier and one of my favorite house producers Jef K called Stamper Square... Anyways long story short, this morning I decided to play the A side and in the first breakdown of the first track there is a computer sounding female vocal that states 'Enter Area Code 313' before the track kicks back in... It's kind of strange as the label art is what appears to be Osaka Japan's subway system, while the info side has a few generic skyscrapers on it. So I am wondering, what this little 313 snipet is doing on a record with no obvious 313 ties (at least to my over-tired brain;)? The track titles are A1 West Station, A2 Ladbroke Groove and B1 Stamper Square...any Detroit signifigance to those?? Is Osaka's area code 313 too??;-) Not that I actually expect any answers, I just thought I'd share... Off to try and get some zzs, m* - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: [313] RE: (313) carl craig - adult
well, he might not have released as much but.. in between touring, setting that little festival in Detroit that was taken away from him, doing the live performance at Cranbrook, working on his next album, throwing the planet e 10th anniversary party, working on remixes, helping out other artists with their records and being a new father (which is the best accomplishment of them all), i'd say he's had a pretty damn good year. busier than most people. have a good weekend everyone. rob -Original Message- From: Niko Tzoukmanis [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, November 09, 2001 1:34 PM To: Mad'R; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] RE: (313) carl craig - adult hi there he did... listen to his remix of kirk degiorgio's 'nairobi' on new religion... niko >I think Cc didn't release anything spectecalar this year (please tell me, me >wrong) >The new Tom middleton btw rocks as hell > >:-) > >Mad'R >- Original Message - - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] Adult on Friday/MMM/some records.
Adult on Friday was very good. There was a good mix of people and the live act was, if not life changing, pretty good fun. One particularly top moment was from Keith Tenniswood, when he played "Donna" on MMM - it's a cracker of a tune, from a long time back judging by the Fat Cat price sticker on mine. Any other info on these folk? My copy is stamped with too much ink, but there's not much to go on apart from it being a German email address. Great music all night (well, for as long as I was there) in fact. It's nice to go out and hear techno I like for a change, rather than stale old conservative stuff you all too frequently hear. Later on I went to Plastic People. The self consciously hip Body & Soul sound was too much too bear in contrast, though. Went record shopping yesterday. Some stand outs were: Gadgets "Parallel" - Finally I hear what the fuss is about. Superb! Definitely some of my favourite non Maurizio Maurizio music. There's a track with a constant bass drone that is maybe one of my favourite tracks of the year so far. I'd appreciate any pointers on how to get hold of the rest of the back catalogue. M>O>S "Utilities" - Don't know how old this is it, but it's a fine example of what makes RushHour stuff so great for me right now. Classy Detroit like sounds with a slight lo-fi sound and a distinct lack of nostalgia. Wicked. Full Swing "[Edits] part 3" - So much of this DSP stuff about it's hard to sort the weak from the chaff. In the end it's really subjective, but I like the rough expansive sound of Full Swing stuff. Maybe someone else does too :) Jonny. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Paula Temple on Radio 1 (was ADULT on Virtual FM)
Yeah, this is great news, both for Paula and electronic music in this country. Just to add a little detail, I believe Paula was offered this R1 show after her Virtual FM show won a national competition, although I heard she was just going to be doing one hour on R1, not two. Apparently she's not allowed to use the vocoder to disguise her voice (as is her normal practice), though, with the consequence that she's even more nervous now! I think it would be cool if we made sure R1 received plenty of feedback about the show - might make them start to take the electronic audience a little more seriously. And yes, anyone out of the R1 broadcasting region can check the show on the web. > Hi, > I spotted your reference to Virtual FM on this list- I went to see Claude > Young at The Orbit here in England last night (who was fantastic by the way!) > and was introduced to Paula Temple who is the main DJ at Virtual FM.
