Mojave

2018-11-30 Thread Cannon Smith via 4D_Tech
I don’t believe 4D has released a version that is fully compatible with Mojave,
unless I missed an announcement. But I’m getting outside pressure to upgrade
from Sierra to Mojave and may have to do it anyway. From what I’ve heard, v17
seems to work good enough for development at least in Mojave, but my main
concern is v16r6. I’ll still need to do some development and building in that
version for a couple months. Is anyone using that version in Mojave and could
comment on how well it is working? (Comments about v17 in Mojave are also
welcome.)

Thanks!

I haven't had any issues running v17 on Mojave. I'm not really doing
anything with v16 anymore so can't speak to that. v15 is mostly OK except
for issues with the web area.

How big is data file? You will need this for how much memory. Indexes? I would
also recommend a raid SSD setup. More memory is always better. If you want to
have your entiore data file in cache you wil need requisite memory. Also make
sure to get Pro versions of SSDs not consumer versions.

Hope this helps?

Subject: Windows Server Hardware Recommendations for 4DServer v17 Application

We're planning to upgrade to v17 in Q1 this coming year. We're currently
running our 4DServer v16 r6 application on a Windows 2008r2 server (DELL Server
PER420 with Xeon CUP E5-2407 v2 @2.40Ghz 2.40 Ghz (2 processors) with 32GB RAM,
64-bit). Our budget for the coming year includes funds for a new server
machine. I'm looking for hardware recommendations based on our current users
and setup. We average about 45 concurrent users via 4D client/server and
another 50 - 70 web connections.

4D doesn't like to make recommendations beyond minimum requirements, so I'm
wondering if anyone on the list has a similar scenario and could recommend
processor speed, RAM, etc.

Thanks in advance!

You may not need any more hardware than you already have. Or you might! What
I'm saying is that the only way to know if you are approaching (or already
exceeding) the capability of your hardware is to measure performance. If you
don't already have Thomas Schulmberger's Info Component installed, that would
be a good place to start. You should be able to find it online, or contact 4D
Tech Support. That will give you lots of key performance data which can be
directly impacted by hardware. For example, it will tell you how often the 4D
cache is being purged and how long it takes. Additionally, if you don't already
have built-in application metrics, like how long it takes to do certain user
tasks, that is something to start doing ASAP. Your users can tell you where the
bottlenecks are, so those are things you need to collect data on. It will help
you determine priorities. And if you can cut 10 seconds off a task done 100
times a day by 45 users that's a massive payback.

How long does it take to run MSC on your current data file? Does it take so
long that you have to interrupt business to do routine maintenance tasks like
Compacting or Re-indexing? If new hardware allows you to reduce the maintenance
burden, that alone could be a reason to upgrade. But you need to collect the
data to know what to do.

But if you have a budget and it needs to be spent, I'd look at your disk
subsystems. If you aren't running solid state drives that would be a great
investment. You'll see reports run in seconds instead of minutes.

HTH,

Tom Benedict

SQL query for the current date

2018-11-30 Thread Jeffrey Kain via 4D_Tech
I'm trying to query 4D Server via the SQL engine from another application, and
it seems like if you use CURRENT_DATE() or CURDATE(), the query is always
sequential even if an index is available.

Example:

  SELECT InvoiceID from Invoices
  WHERE CreatedDate=CURRENT_DATE()

... does a sequential scan of the Invoices table, even though
Invoices.CreatedData is indexed. This takes a very long time - probably close
to a half an hour.

If I rewrite the where clause as:

  WHERE CreatedDate='2018-11-30'

... it takes milliseconds.

Is there a trick to being able to write a script that can generically select
against the current date? This is from some php code, fyi... but it's easily
reproduced inside of 4D itself.

Thanks!
Jeff

For your data size I would look at 500 gig suds and 64 or greater memory if you
can afford it

If you assign 32 gig to cache most will be in memory. You can even preload

v13 - Odd behavior

2018-11-30 Thread Chip Scheide via 4D_Tech
I was testing some code. The method presents the user with a
confirmation dialog, and returns value as the user response. I copied
my intended message, and the method call for the confirmation into a
testing method (so I can run just the message).

$msg:="blah blahl Blah"
(utl_msg_4ButtonConfirm ($msg;"Umm No";"Confirm")

When I tested this, the dialog was presented, as it should have been,
then it was presented a SECOND time!

NOTE: there is a left parenthesis in the method call. For whatever
reason, the extra paren caused 4D to execute the method call 2x.
