Re: [AI] EXCEL QUERY

2006-07-09 Thread K Ramkrishna
Dear Vikas,
If you want to copy a formula from a cell to a range of cells, do the
following:
1. Be in the cell, whose formula you want to copy and press control + c.
2. To select the range of cells, where you want to copy, be in the north
west corner and pressing shift and right arrow or down arrow, go to the
south east corner and release the keys.
3. do control + v and your job is done.
4. please note that when you copy a formula, the input cells will change.
For example, if you copy a1+b1 ,which you had defined in c1, when you copy
from c2 to c10, the input cells will also change as a2+b2 and a10+b10. If
you want a particular cell address not to change, put $ in the formula. For
example, if you say $a1 and copy from b1 to n1, the cell address will not
change, If you put a$1, then, when you copy from c2 to c10, the cell address
will not change. If you put $a$1, the cell address will never change, where
ever you copy.
I hope this will help you.
regards

[AI] FW: Gadget to record smells

Subject: GOOD AFTERNOON

Dear sir, I'm pasting an article, which I found
interesting. I was afraid to post it directly because
I thought it could be off-topic. If you find it of any
worth then please post it on the list.
  Ever yours,

Shadab Husain. Gadget to record smells
Online edition of India's National Newspaper Thursday,
Jul 06, 2006
Gadget to record smells
ALOK JHA- GUARDIAN NEWSPAPERS LIMITED 2006
IT IS a gadget straight out of a science fiction
story: a machine that can record a smell and play it
back to you at your leisure.
Present it with a designer perfume or freshly baked
bread and it will analyse the odour and reproduce it
for you later using a mixture of non-toxic chemicals.
Engineers hope a successful smell-recording device
could be useful for online shopping - allowing
customers to smell products before buying them - or to
add another dimension to television.
It could even be used by doctors to remotely diagnose
patients, by recreating the smell of blood, bile or
urine to help with a diagnosis.
Pambuk Somboon, of the Tokyo Institute of Technology,
who is leading the development of the smell-recording
gadget, told New Scientist magazine that while aroma
generators have been produced in the past, they have
failed commercially because the number of smells they
can produce has always been limited.
In his system, there are no pre-prepared smells, just
15 chemical-sensing electric noses that can pick up a
wide range of smells.
"In video, you just need to record shades of red,
green and blue," he said. "But humans have 347
olfactory sensors, so we need a lot of source
chemicals."
Once the sensors pick up the various components of an
aroma, it is re-created from an ingredient list of 96
chemicals in the machine.
These chemicals can be tailored to the potential use
of the gadget - a doctor and a perfumier will need to
record different smells.
Drops from the relevant chemicals are mixed, heated
and vapourised. In tests so far, the gadget has
successfully recorded and reproduced the smells of
orange, lemon, apple, banana and melon. "We can even
tell a green apple from a red apple," said Somboon.
Range of smells
Stephen Brewster, a computer scientist at Glasgow
University, in Scotland, studies whether smell can be
used to help people identify digital photos without
opening them.
"It would be interesting to know what range of smells
this new system can detect and recreate," he said.

Alive and clicking: the latest iPod will talk the listener through the
songs
and bands on the menu.

Apple pips its rivals with the iPod that talks
RICHARD GRAY SCIENCE CORRESPONDENT (
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
_ (mailto:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]) )

FROM Walkman to Talkman. Not content with changing the world's
music-listening habits, Apple has come up with another innovation: the
talking iPod.

A new generation of machines will use sophisticated software to convert
the
names of bands, albums and individual tracks into recognisable speech.

The new iPod will tell you what it is about to play, removing the need
for
users to look at the screen while selecting music, and making the device

safer
and easier to use while driving, cycling or in badly-lit locations.

Crucially, the talking machines could give the iPod a badly-needed new
competitive edge in the hotly-contested digital music player market.

The iconic machines were last week reported to have lost some of their
sheen, with consumers following a series of technical problems and
controversy
surrounding
the working conditions of those who make them. To make matters worse,
software giant Microsoft is said to be working on its own iPod-bashing
digital music
player.

Apple has flatly refused to comment on the design, but a patent lodged
by
the company in the United States makes clear the sixth generation of
iPods
will
be able to convert those famous text menus into speech.

The ingenious system will rely on home PC processing power and clever
software. The computer being used to download tracks will analyse each
album
title,
song name and artist and convert them into sound files. These will be
loaded
into the iPod, along with the song files.

Users of the music players will still operate the Clickwheel as normal,
but
hear the names of songs and bands through their headphones.

The patent reveals the idea is driven largely by safety considerations.

It states: "A user will have difficulty navigating the interface in
'eyes-busy' situations.

"Such activities include, for example, driving an automobile, exercising
and
crossing the street."

The patent also makes clear that text-to-speech technology is likely to
spread to other hand-held electronic devices such as mobile phones and
palm-top
computers.

The move is expected to spark a new digital player war as competing
manufacturers attempt to cram more and more features into their digital
music players
in a bid to keep up.

iPods have recently begun losing favour with consumers, amid claims of
poor
working conditions at a Chinese factory where the devices are made.

Microsoft is reported to be planning a digital music player with
wireless
internet capabilities, removing the need for a PC to download music.

The firm is believed to be keen to break Apple's stranglehold on the
download market with its iTunes software.

The iPod and iTunes enjoy market share of about 80% in the US and the
UK, as
well as more than half the online music market in Europe as a whole.

Sony is also believed to be working on a wireless product that can
download
music and video broadcasts in venues such as concert halls and even
shops.
The
firm filed a patent in 2004 which states that compressed files could be
sent
to concert-goers with footage from the concert they had just seen.

Converting text into speech has been a major goal of the computer
industry
for decades, but early versions of the technology struggled with
difficult
words
and names.

It also requires formidable computer processing power to carry out the
difficult conversion.

But Apple says its system will break down words in a new way that makes
it
possible to pronounce perfectly even the most obscure song titles and
artist
names.

It also proposes using "voice talent" - such as famous actors - to make
the
speech more human and add in the celebrity factor.

The patent also proposes using different voice "characteristics", such
as
gender, for different sections of the iPod menus.

Professor Steve Renals, a speech technology expert at Edinburgh
University,
said: "It is possible to create very high quality text-to-voices these
days.

"We have seen some already used in mobile phones, but it has struggled
in
the past with difficult words and names. The technology is much better
now
and
can cope with most things."

Safety experts have raised concerns over cyclists, pedestrians and
motorists
being involved in accidents when they are distracted by their digital
music
devices.

Last month, a teenager from Preston was killed whil

[AI] talking Ipods

Alive and clicking: the latest iPod will talk...

Alive and clicking: the latest iPod will talk the listener through the songs
and bands on the menu.

Apple pips its rivals with the iPod that talks
RICHARD GRAY SCIENCE CORRESPONDENT (
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
_ (mailto:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]) )

FROM Walkman to Talkman. Not content with changing the world's
music-listening habits, Apple has come up with another innovation: the
talking iPod.

A new generation of machines will use sophisticated software to convert the
names of bands, albums and individual tracks into recognisable speech.

The new iPod will tell you what it is about to play, removing the need for
users to look at the screen while selecting music, and making the device
safer
and easier to use while driving, cycling or in badly-lit locations.

To make matters worse,
software giant Microsoft is said to be working on its own iPod-bashing
digital music
player.

Apple has flatly refused to comment on the design, but a patent lodged by
the company in the United States makes clear the sixth generation of iPods
will
be able to convert those famous text menus into speech.

The ingenious system will rely on home PC processing power and clever
software. The computer being used to download tracks will analyse each album
title,
song name and artist and convert them into sound files. These will be loaded
into the iPod, along with the song files.

Users of the music players will still operate the Clickwheel as normal, but
hear the names of songs and bands through their headphones.

The patent reveals the idea is driven largely by safety considerations.

It states: "A user will have difficulty navigating the interface in
'eyes-busy' situations.

"Such activities include, for example, driving an automobile, exercising and
crossing the street."

The patent also makes clear that text-to-speech technology is likely to
spread to other hand-held electronic devices such as mobile phones and
palm-top
computers.

The move is expected to spark a new digital player war as competing
manufacturers attempt to cram more and more features into their digital
music players
in a bid to keep up.

iPods have recently begun losing favour with consumers, amid claims of poor
working conditions at a Chinese factory where the devices are made.

Microsoft is reported to be planning a digital music player with wireless
internet capabilities, removing the need for a PC to download music.

The firm is believed to be keen to break Apple's stranglehold on the
download market with its iTunes software.

The iPod and iTunes enjoy market share of about 80% in the US and the UK, as
well as more than half the online music market in Europe as a whole.

Sony is also believed to be working on a wireless product that can download
music and video broadcasts in venues such as concert halls and even shops.
The
firm filed a patent in 2004 which states that compressed files could be sent
to concert-goers with footage from the concert they had just seen.

Converting text into speech has been a major goal of the computer industry
for decades, but early versions of the technology struggled with difficult
words
and names.

It also requires formidable computer processing power to carry out the
difficult conversion.

But Apple says its system will break down words in a new way that makes it
possible to pronounce perfectly even the most obscure song titles and artist
names.

It also proposes using "voice talent" - such as famous actors - to make the
speech more human and add in the celebrity factor.

The patent also proposes using different voice "characteristics", such as
gender, for different sections of the iPod menus.

Professor Steve Renals, a speech technology expert at Edinburgh University,
said: "It is possible to create very high quality text-to-voices these days.

"We have seen some already used in mobile phones, but it has struggled in
the past with difficult words and names. The technology is much better now
and
can cope with most things."

Safety experts have raised concerns over cyclists, pedestrians and motorists
being involved in accidents when they are distracted by their digital music
devices.

Last month, a teenager from Preston was killed while listening to his iPod
on his bike when he collided with a tractor. Another teenager, Kathryn
Thomas,
caused a fatal road accident last year when she took her eyes off the road
to show a friend how to use her iPod. Roger Vincent, spokesman for the Royal
Society for the Prevention of Accidents, said: "If people

[AI] look up

2006-07-09 Thread Abhijit Joshi
here is artical found in Excel help
I think it will benifit to Archana and my other friends
Microsoft Office Assistance: VLOOKUP

VLOOKUP

Show AllShow All

Searches for a value in the first column of a table array and returns a value
in the same row from another column in the table array.

The V in VLOOKUP stands for vertical. Use VLOOKUP instead of HLOOKUP when your
comparison values are located in a column to the left of the data that you
want to find.

Syntax

VLOOKUP(lookup_value,table_array,col_index_num,range_lookup)

Lookup_value The value to search in the first column of the table
array.
Lookup_value can be a value or a reference. If lookup_value is smaller than the
smallest value in the first column of table_array, VLOOKUP returns the #N/A
error value.

Table_array Two or more columns of data. Use a reference to a range or a range
name. The values in the first column of table_array are the values searched
by lookup_value. These values can be text, numbers, or logical values.
Uppercase and lowercase text are equivalent.

Col_index_num The column number in table_array from which the matching value
must be returned. A col_index_num of 1 returns the value in the first column
in table_array; a col_index_num of 2 returns the value in the second column in
table_array, and so on. If col_index_num is:
List of 2 items
. Less than 1, VLOOKUP returns the #VALUE! error value.
. Greater than the number of columns in table_array, VLOOKUP returns the #REF!
error value.
list end

Range_lookup A logical value that specifies whether you want VLOOKUP to find
an exact match or an approximate match:
List of 2 items
. If TRUE or omitted, an exact or approximate match is returned. If an exact
match is not found, the next largest value that is less than lookup_value is
returned.

The values in the first column of table_array must be placed in ascending sort
order; otherwise, VLOOKUP may not give the correct value. You can put the
values in ascending order by choosing the Sort command from the Data menu and
selecting Ascending. For more information, see
Default sort orders.
. If FALSE, VLOOKUP will only find an exact match. In this case, the values in
the first column of table_array do not need to be sorted. If there are two
or more values in the first column of table_array that match the lookup_value,
the first value found is used. If an exact match is not found, the error
value #N/A is returned.
list end

Remarks
List of 3 items
. When searching text values in the first column of table_array, ensure that
the data in the first column of table_array does not have leading spaces,
trailing
spaces, inconsistent use of straight ( ' or " ) and curly ( ' or ") quotation
marks, or nonprinting characters. In these cases, VLOOKUP may give an incorrect
or unexpected value. For more information on functions that you can use to
clean text data, see
Text and Data functions.
. When searching number or date values, ensure that the data in the first
column of table_array is not stored as text values. In this case, VLOOKUP may
give an incorrect or unexpected value. For more information, see
Convert numbers stored as text to numbers.
. If range_lookup is FALSE and lookup_value is text, then you can use the
wildcard characters, question mark (?) and asterisk (*), in lookup_value. A
question
mark matches any single character; an asterisk matches any sequence of
characters. If you want to find an actual question mark or asterisk, type a
tilde
(~) preceding the character.
list end

=VLOOKUP(1,A2:C10,2)
Using an approximate match, searches for the value 1 in column A, finds the

returns
the value from column B in the same row. (2.17)

no exact match in column A, an error is returned. (#N/A)
=VLOOKUP(0.1,A2:C10,2,TRUE)
Using an approximate match, searches for the value 0.1 in column A. Because 0.1

in the same row from another column in the table array.

Formula
Description (result)
=VLOOKUP(1,A2:C10,2)
Using an approximate match, searches for the value 1 in column A, finds the
largest value less than or equal to 1 in column A which is 0.946, and then
returns
the value from column B in the same row. (2.17)
=VLOOKUP(1,A2:C10,3,TRUE)
Using an approximate match, searches for the value 1 in column A, finds the
largest value less than or equal to 1 in column A, which is 0.946, and then
returns the value from column C in the same row. (100)
=VLOOKUP(.7,A2:C10,3,FALSE)
Using an exact match, searches for the value .7 in column A. Because there is
no exact match in column A, an error is returned. (#N/A)
=VLOOKUP(0.1,A2:C10,2,TRUE)
Using an approximate match, searches for the value 0.1 in column A. Because 0.1
is less than the smallest value in column A, an error is returned. (#N/A)
=VLOOKUP(2,A2:C10,2,TRUE)
Using an approximate match, searches for the value

Hi Subramani,

You can also opt for the Internet License Manager or ILM version. I
think
if you change from quella authorization disk to ILM, there is no charge.
But
I am not sure if ILM was introduced for Jaws 5.0.

Regards,
Kiran.

Dear Subramani,
Not, many copies of JAWS have been sold in India and Mr. Ram Agarwal
will
remember of having sold a copy to you and he should help you. I am
indeed
surprised at the fee being charged for replacing the authorization
floppy.
You have already spent so much money and why replacement of
authorization
floppy should be charged. Many of us got the key downloaded from the
site
after informing Freedom Scientific and they confirming that we could do
so.
Please look in to this.
regards

Re: [AI] needs your help

2006-07-09 Thread Kiran Kaja
Hi Subramani,

You can also opt for the Internet License Manager or ILM version. I think
if you change from quella authorization disk to ILM, there is no charge. But
I am not sure if ILM was introduced for Jaws 5.0.

Regards,
Kiran.

Dear Subramani,
Not, many copies of JAWS have been sold in India and Mr. Ram Agarwal will
remember of having sold a copy to you and he should help you. I am indeed
surprised at the fee being charged for replacing the authorization floppy.
You have already spent so much money and why replacement of authorization
floppy should be charged. Many of us got the key downloaded from the site
after informing Freedom Scientific and they confirming that we could do so.
Please look in to this.
regards
