[AI] Perseverance helps Unnamalai get a break in life
Perseverance helps Unnamalai get a break in life Karthik Madhavan Unnamalai breaking cottonseeds at the Gandhi Ashram in Tiruchengode - Photo: M. Govarthan TIRUCHENGODE: Unnamalai has no idea how she looks. Nor is she aware of her age. Born visually challenged at Pudupalayam, about 10 km from here, she was cared for by her brothers. Years later, when they moved out in search of employment, she was left in the care of her ailing mother. She had lost her father early in life. Recalls Unnamalai, who was left to fend for herself and her mother: "There was utter poverty in my house 23 years ago. We were unsure where the next meal would come from. I wanted to work but could not find employment." Today, she is better off, taking care of her needs, thanks to the Gandhi Ashram-Tiruchengodu. She earns Rs. 1,000 a month and gets a sari free for Deepavali. Turning point Her better days began when she visited the Ashram 23 years ago. She had got to know about the Ashram from her neighbours, who were working there. "... I met Aravamudhan sir with a request for a job," recalls Unnamalai. The then Secretary of the Ashram and now Honorary Trustee, S. Aravamudhan, says: "She wanted to pack matches. But I did agree because in the event of a fire she would not have been be able to respond immediately." He gave the matter a thought for a few days before entrusting her with the task of breaking cottonseeds (ilavamkaai). "We had started procuring seeds directly from the farmers and were looking for people to break these. She fitted in well and we gave her a wooden hammer to ensure she did not hurt herself," says Mr. Aravamudhan. Special efforts Unnamalai then earned a paisa for two seeds and earned Rs. 5 a day. Today, she gets Rs. 2.50 for a kg, 50 paise more than her colleagues. Work round the year The Ashram ensures she gets work round the year. "Even during off season, we ensure adequate stock to give her work," says Mr. Aravamudhan. Unnamalai has led a comfortable life for 23 years, thanks to the Ashram and its adherence to the Gandhian way of fostering rural economy. [AI] With a gritty mind and agile hands
Send this Article to a Friend With a gritty mind and agile hands K. Lakshmi 100 visually impaired persons played chess with ease at a tournament organised by an NGO A visually challenged player concentrates on his next move in the chess tournament for the visually impaired organised on Sunday. Photo: K.Pichumani CHENNAI: Chess is a mind game, a combination of challenges and concentration, making it exciting for both players and spectators alike. The chess tournament on Sunday was all the more interesting: 100 visually impaired persons played the game with ease and agility. Visual impairment was not at all a barrier for them. Braille boards Organised by Nethrodaya, a self-help organisation for the visually challenged, the V.T. Lazar Memorial Adapted Chess Tournament had enthusiastic participants from southern States. The Braille chessboards were slightly different from the normal ones. The squares had peg holes to hold chess pieces, and the white pieces had a projected dot on the top. S.T. Sai Krishna, a 10-year-old boy, hogged the limelight, winning four of the five rounds against those much older than him. A.Goutham, of Class XI, was another enthusiastic player. "I play the game with stones at home. This tournament was a good opportunity for chess lovers like me," he said. After a nail biting tiebreak, P. Kaalisekhar, a second year student of English literature in Madras Christian College, won the title with five points, defeating Rajkumar from Thanjavur, who stood second. S. Bhagyaraj won the third place. Appreciating the efforts of the Nethrodaya, Social Welfare secretary, N.S. Palaniappan said the Government was prepared to help the visually challenged through its schemes. They must make use of the opportunities through NGOs. He said ramps were being provided in government offices, and a State Commission for Disabled was formed to assist them. One per cent of the jobs is set aside for the visually impaired. Challenge Actor Srikanth said the visually impaired were more of a challenge than a handicap. He asked the players to develop self-confidence and take part in more such activities. Nethrodaya founder C. Govindakrishnan said a cricket tournament would be conducted for the visually impaired. A browsing centre was also being set up in Nethrodaya. Sukanya Venkatachalam, general manager, Chennai Wellington Corporate Foundation, and R. Srinivasan, managing director of Radha Park Inn, also participated. [AI] Dell recalls spark battery probe
Dell recall sparks battery probe Dell laptop battery, AP The recall is said to be the biggest electrical recall ever An investigation has begun to see if the problem that led Dell to recall millions of its notebook computer batteries could affect other brands. This week, 4.1 million of the lithium-ion batteries, made by Sony, were recalled because of a fire risk. Now the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is trying to find out if the same batteries in other laptops will suffer the same problem. Sony has said it cannot name the other companies for legal reasons. However, computer manufacturers Fujitsu and Lenovo Group Ltd have said they use Sony lithium-ion batteries in some of their products, but that their notebook computers were designed not to overheat. Both companies said they were not recalling any batteries. Hewlett-Packard also said they were not affected by the recall as they do not use Sony battery packs in their notebook products. 'No danger' Sony has said it used the batteries in some of its Vaio notebooks. A spokesperson for Sony said: "Some Vaio notebook series utilized the batteries in question, but at present we have not received any incident reports related to these products. "Sony's Vaio adopts its own design for safety technology, and Sony considers there is no danger of emission of smoke or fire from these products. "The battery charging system that Vaio uses is different from that of Dell." She added that the fault was most likely linked to the way Dell integrated the battery into its laptop computers. Sony lithium-ion batteries were used in Dell laptops shipped between April 2004 and July 2006, including the Latitude, Inspiron, XPS and Precision notebook models. According to a Dell spokesperson, it affected about 15% of the batteries the company sold in that period. The recall was issued after six confirmed instances of overheating or fire in Dell hardware; the company is offering affected consumers free replacements. It was, said the US consumer safety watchdog, the biggest recall of electrical products in its history. The CPSC also said they had identified 339 incidents in which lithium batteries used in laptops and cell phones - not just Dell products - overheated between 2003 and 2005. [AI] Speedy silicon sets world record
Speedy silicon sets world record microchip Modern circuits contain millions of transistors A simple tweak to the way common silicon transistors are made could allow faster, cheaper mobile phones and digital cameras, say UK researchers. Devices with the modification have already set a new world record for the fastest transistor of its type. To achieve the speed gain, researchers at the University of Southampton added fluorine to the silicon devices. The technique uses existing silicon manufacturing technology meaning it should be quick and easy to deploy. "It just takes a standard technology and adds one extra step," said Professor Peter Ashburn at the University of Southampton, who carried out the work. "This is a really cheap method." Silicon sandwich The research was carried out using a simple type of transistor known as a silicon bipolar transistor. Transistors are the tiny building blocks of most microchips and millions are found in desktop computers, mobile phones and MP3 players. It's atomic engineering really, even smaller than nanotechnology Professor Peter Ashburn They are used to regulate electronic currents in microchips, and depending on the type may be used to amplify a signal or open and close a circuit. Combinations of transistors can be used to do calculations or useful computational work. Bipolar transistors are made of three layers of semi-conducting material arranged in a sandwich structure, with two layers of one material with a filling of a different sort. A thinner filling in the transistor means electrons can flow through the device more quickly, increasing the overall speed of a circuit or chip. Alternative approaches for building fast transistors exist but they use other materials, such as gallium arsenide or a silicon germanium mix, which require more expensive manufacturing techniques. The silicon industry would like to continue to squeeze greater speeds out of smaller chip using existing manufacturing processes which are cheap and reliable. The work from the University of Southampton offers one solution. Atomic scales Professor Ashburn and colleagues at STC Microelectronics used a simple transistor made of silicon with a boron filling for the research. To make transistors of this type requires high temperature manufacturing processes which cause the boron layer to diffuse, creating a thicker and hence slower layer. A man looks at the latest mobile phones The new chips could be used in mobile phones To get round this problem, the researchers added fluorine implants to the silicon layers using a common manufacturing process, known as ion implantation. Ion implantation involves firing atoms of one element, in this case fluorine, at a target of silicon. At an atomic level, the fluorine creates small clusters of vacancies, areas of missing silicon atoms. These voids suppress boron diffusion, creating a thinner layer and therefore speeding up the transistor. "It's atomic engineering really, even smaller than nanotechnology," said Professor Ashburn. World record When the researchers tested the new device it clocked a speed of 110 GHz. Complete circuits usually operate at about a tenth of the speed of the component transistors meaning the new devices could allow engineers to build chips that operate at a speed of about 11GHz. There's no Guinness Record for this but it is the fastest in the published literature Professor Ashburn The previous world record, held by electronic giant Philips, created transistors that operate at speeds of up to 70GHz, allowing operating circuit speeds of 7GHz. "There's no Guinness Record for this but it is the fastest in the published literature," said Prof Ashburn. At present, mobile phone circuits operate at speeds of about 1GHz. Working circuits using the new design of transistor are currently being developed by Professor Ashburn's research partner STC Microelectronics in Italy. Although a product has not been built using the new devices, Prof Ashburn says they could be used to amplify the signal in mobile phones or to improve the way that handsets convert speech into digital signals. Complete circuits are also used in digital cameras or scanners to improve the way they convert information from the real world into pixels. "There are many applications," said Professor Ashburn. [AI] Battery recall becoming popular as Dell on internet
Battery recall becoming as popular as Dell on internet New Delhi, Aug 18. (PTI): The recall of faulty batteries present in more than 4 million Dell notebooks is turning out to be as famous as the global PC giant itself on the world wide web. DellBatteryProgram.com, the website launched to determine the faulty models and for subsequent replacement order, attracted 1.26 million visitors on August 15 in the US alone, the next day after Dell announced the recall, the global internet data monitoring firm comScore Networks said on Thursday. In comparison, the company's official website Dell.com attracts 1.39 million average daily visitors in the US, based on the previous month's data. Dell announced on Monday that it would recall 4.1 million lithium-ion batteries, saying these batteries made by Japan's Sony could overheat, smoke and catch fire. The company added that its customers could log on to dellbatteryprogram.com to determine if their notebook models have the batteries in question subsequently place their order or the battery replacement. Dell was scheduled to release its June 2006 quarter results later on Thursday. Around 72 per cent of traffic to DellBatteryProgram.com on August 15 originated from work locations, while 24 per cent came from home locations, and the remaining 5 per cent from university locations, comScore Networks' Senior Analyst Andrew Lipsman said. In comparison, 48 per cent of total US internet traffic on the same day came from Work computers, 46 per cent came from home and 6 per cent came from the university locations. Dell has said most of the cases of faulty batteries are expected to be in the US, China and Japan and its notebooks in India are unlikely to have been affected. The batteries being recalled were shipped to customers between April 1, 2004 and July 18, 2006 with the words 'DELL' and 'Made in Japan' or 'Made in China' or 'Battery cell made in Japan, Assembled in China' printed on the back of the batteries. [AI] File-sharing 'darknet' unveiled
File-sharing 'darknet' unveiled Aug 16, 2006 A "darknet" service that allows users to share music files anonymously on the web has been launched in Sweden. Relakks, as the service is known, allows users to send and receive files through a heavily-encrypted connection. It is the first commercial example of a darknet, a virtual network set up to share files between trusted users. The service is endorsed by political group the Pirate Party which is running for election in Sweden under a banner to reform the country's copyright laws. "There are many legitimate reasons to want to be completely anonymous on the internet," said Rickard Falkvinge, chairman of the Pirate Party. "The right to exchange information in private is fundamental to the democratic society. Without a safe and convenient way of accessing the internet anonymously, this right is rendered null and void." A darknet is a cordoned-off, anonymised section of the net where users can meet, chat and swap data. Usually darknets are confined to small tight-knit groups such as hackers who use the secure connections to distribute information and hacking tools. They have also been used by paedophiles to distribute images of child abuse. Many are invitation-only services where potential members have to upload material to prove themselves to the group before they are granted full access. Similar identity-hiding tools such as Tor are used by net dissidents in countries like China to avoid persecution for their activities on the web. Previous attempts to launch large scale anonymous networks, such as Nullsoft's Waste program have been unsuccessful. After its release in 2003, Waste was removed form distribution by Nullsoft's parent company AOL. The new system claims to be the world's first commercial darknet. It is provided by Swedish company Relakks and is endorsed by the Pirate Party. It works by giving a user's computer a new IP address, the unique number the machine uses to identify itself and communicate with other machines over the net. IP numbers allocated by your internet service provider (ISP) can be used to trace and identify a specific computer on a network. Computers using the Relakks system look like they have a Swedish IP address, no matter where they are in the world. Users can then share files, such as music or films, with any other users. In theory anyone monitoring user's online activities will not be able to trace their geographical location. The Pirate Party acknowledge that the service could be used to distribute copyright material or other content such as images of child abuse. "We hear the argument a lot," Mr Falkvinge told the BBC News website. "No, we don't have any control over what is being sent over the network but that's the point. "People who want to hide their activities online already have the means to do so. We're just giving those tools to the general public." File sharing and copyright law is a divisive topic in Sweden. Until recently the country was a hotbed of piracy where films, music and software were readily swapped online. Last year, it outlawed the unauthorised downloading of copyrighted movies and music in an attempt to curb piracy, after criticism from Hollywood. The Pirate Party was launched in part to temper what they say are "aggressive" tactics by the entertainment industry to enforce copyright infringement. They say techniques such as tracing IP addresses threaten privacy and democracy. The Relakks service, they say, offers people the ability to use the internet "without fear of being monitored or logged". It costs five euro (£3) per month with some of the funds going towards supporting the Pirate Party. However, not everyone is convinced that it is what it claims to be. In a forum on the US website of the Pirate Party, a post by a user called Smironv questioned whether the service is really anonymous. "You can't connect to Relakks anonymously, because then they'd have no way of verifying you are a paying customer - so Relakks knows who you really are when all your traffic goes through them. "What is the difference between trusting them and trusting my own ISP not to give me away?" http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4798059.stm Vikas Kapoor, MSN ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype ID: dl_vikas Mobile: (+91) 9891098137.To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Hackers target latest Windows fix
Hackers target latest Windows fix Hi-tech hackers have started to produce malicious programs that target the latest bugs in Microsoft's Windows. A worm has been spotted in the wild that tries to use vulnerabilities to hijack home computers. Any computer compromised by the worm will become part of a large botnet set up to send out junk mail. At the same time Microsoft is re-issuing a recent security patch which has made the Internet Explorer browser crash on some computers. On 8 August Microsoft released a bumper collection of security patches for 23 separate flaws in Windows and programs in the Office software suite. One of the problems identified in the August update was deemed so serious that the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a warning urging users to download the patch and apply it as soon as possible. The DHS has a role in securing America's critical infrastructure which includes the internet. Now security companies have caught copies of a worm travelling the net that tries to infect Windows machines via this loophole. The Mocbot worm attacks machines running Windows 2000 or XP that only have Service Pack 1 installed. "As Microsoft only issued a patch against this vulnerability last week, many Windows computers probably remain unpatched and vulnerable to these threats," said Carole Theriault, senior security consultant at Sophos in a statement. Computer security firms have seen two variants of this worm circulating online. Analysis by Joe Stewart at security firm Lurhq show that, once installed, it tries to download a trojan known to act as a spam proxy. These are networks of compromised machines that junk mailers have been forced to use because so few net service firms will host companies that send out millions of unwanted messages. Microsoft said it would be re-issuing one of the security patches because, in certain circumstances, it can cause the Internet Explorer browser to crash. The problem occurs with the MS06-42 update which tried to fix eight separate vulnerabilities in the IE browser. Relatively few users are thought to be suffering from the clash between IE and the security patches. Microsoft said it affected IE with Service Pack 1 installed but only if visiting websites that use data compression and the widely used version 1.1 of the HTTP web protocols. Microsoft said it expected to have the new version of the MS06-42 update ready by 22 August. However, a "hotfix" has been made available but Microsoft said this should only be installed on those computers crashing because of the update. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4797949.stm Vikas Kapoor, MSN ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype ID: dl_vikas Mobile: (+91) 9891098137.To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Data Download
Many times the original message helps us to get a glimpse of what topic the discussion is going on, so it would not be wise to cut original message from the reply but one thing can be done that is to reduce the number of contacts a person is giving under his or her name like hot mail id, yahoo Id, skype I d and p n t number and mobile number. At the max. a person should be allowed to give only one I d and can be contacted on that one for any other details. This will help us to go through the messages very fast without losing the actual context of discussion. "What kind of message is this?" that even I do not know. I guess the new member is trying to send his or her CV across instead of introduction. You folks should realize that I do not monitor each and every message unless the member in question is moderated. If I have to read and approve each and every message, it will take days for your messages to reach the list. Also, I do not have all that in the world. So, about this message, I saw it when you saw it. And I do read all messages when they come to the list at the same time you people read it. So, do not complain about things like these immediately. Re: [AI] Local Identity not found
Hi Sameer, I am pasting below an FAQ about system restore. Hope this helps. Geetha Q. What is System Restore? A. The System Restore feature of Microsoft Windows XP enables administrators to restore their computers to a previous state without losing personal data files (e.g. Word documents, graphic files, e-mail). System Restore actively monitors system file changes and some application file changes to record or store previous versions before the changes occurred. Users never have to think about taking system snapshots as System Restore automatically creates easily identifiable restore points, which the users can use to revert to a previous time. Restore points are created at the time of significant system events (such as application or driver install) and periodically (each day). Additionally, users can create and name their own restore points at any time. For more information, please see the System Restore| http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmb_tol_fngj.asp document on TechNet. Q. Which versions of Windows features System Restore? A. System Restore is available in Windows Millennium (Me) and the Windows XP (Home and Professional) Operating Systems. However, this FAQ addresses questions and issues with System Restore in Windows XP only. Q. How is System Restore different from Backup? A. System Restore monitors only a core set of specified system and application file types (e.g. .exe, .dll etc), while Backup Utility typically backs up all files including users personal data files, ensuring a safe copy stored either on the local disk or to another medium. System Restore does not monitor changes to or recover users' personal data files such as documents, graphics, e-mail, and so on. While system data contained in System Restore's restore points are available to restore to for only a limited period (restore points older than 90 days are deleted by default), backups made by the Backup Utility can be recovered at any time. Q. Do I need to do anything to ensure System Restore is protecting my system? A. System Restore is enabled by default and runs after the successful completion of either the Windows XP Professional or Personal x86-version installation. It requires a minimum of 200 MB of free space available on the system partition. If 200 MB is not available, System Restore will install disabled and will enable itself automatically once the required disk space is available. With System Restore, you also never have to worry about taking system snapshots, as it will automatically create easily identifiable restore points, which allows you to revert to a previous time. Restore points are created at the time of significant system events (such as application or driver install) and periodically (each day). Additionally, you can create and name your own restore points at any time. You also never have to worry about System Restore filling up your hard drive with these restore points. By default, it only uses a maximum of 12% disk capacity and has an automatic restore point space management feature that purges the oldest restore points to make room for new ones, enabling recovery from any recent undesirable changes. Q. Does System Restore cause any performance loss? A. System Restore does not cause any noticeable performance impact when monitoring your computer. The creation of a Restore point also is a very fast process and usually takes only a few seconds. Scheduled System Checkpoints (every 24 hours by default) are created only at system idle time to avoid interfering with a computer during use. Q. Who can use System Restore? A. Only users with administrative rights can use System Restore to restore and adjust System Restore settings. However, the creation of automatic restore points (system checkpoints or event-driven restore points) on the computer takes place regardless of which user is logged onto the computer. If a non-admin user is logged on, system checkpoints or event driven checkpoints will still be created on that computer to ensure protection. However, only a user with admin privileges will be able to restore the computer. Q. Why can't all users on my computer access the System Restore settings? Q. Does System Restore protect personal data files? A. System Restore does not monitor changes to or recover personal data files such as Word documents, graphics, e-mail, etc. Q. What files are monitored

I have already ruled out forced shutdown, incomplete shutdown, power fluctuations and had done a virus scan with both AVG and Norton yesterday. 2. Can the Local identity be recovered without reinstalling Windows? 3. In case the local identity cannot be recovered without reinstalling Windows, can I create another identity and have it work as the Local Identity without reinstalling Windows. Re: [AI] Kasha
What is this going on? Aren't we behaving like the members of parliament? I insist that everyone of we members of AI should strictly follow the rules of the game, as laid down by the moderator and agreed upon by all of us. I know Kiran much more than many of you and I need to state that he is a professional and doing a fine job in managing AI. In a family, we have to follow the rules and none of us can have any objection about it. In case, any one of us have a dispute, either it should be saughted out or we leave the seen. Please, let us not publicize our differences. Stay under rules or quit. What is this that some of us saying that AI is only for select few. I do not think that any one of us has been stopped from expressing our thoughts and information, provided the same is within the regulations. Greatness lies in accepting a mistake, when pointed out and make amendments, instead of protesting like children. regards - Original Message - From: "Kasha" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Tuesday, August 15, 2006 9:04 PM Subject: Re: [AI] Kasha > who are you to tell me nonsens? Re: [AI] Local Identity not found
Why don't you just run the system restore from the system tools menu in accessaries in start menu. That would bring your computer back to the settings that you had at some previous date. So you could restore your system to a few days ago.
