Subject: [AI] M S Word problem

 Dear List,

While reading a book, I made notes in a separate M S Word file. I kept
on saving my notes frequently. Sometimes I was typing and a few times I
copied the definitions and pasted them in my notes file. Now the book is
complete and I checked the notes file for any spelling mistakes. Today
when I opened the file, jaws is not reading upto the 13 page but after
that it starts reading. I asked one of my friends to read the 12 pages,
and he said that it is readable and written in English. On pressing the
down arrow it is saying blank. Any suggestions to correct the problem.

 Thanks

Climber's adventures lead to new career

By Scott N. Miller

Eric Alexander has been a lift operator and ski patroller; he's now a corporate
speaker Kira Horvath/Daily file photo

EAGLE-VAIL - Eric Alexander could have turned down an invitation to climb Mount
Everest with a blind man. But he went, and his life changed.

Since Alexander helped his friend Eric Weihenmayer reach the summit of the
world's tallest mountain in 2001, Alexander has found a new career as a
corporate speaker. It's a long way from his first days in the Vail Valley as a
lift operator.

Like so many others, Alexander came to the valley to play, and a lift
operator's job got him a ski pass. But it also led to a job on the Vail Ski
Patrol, and, eventually, a season in France in an exchange program. While on
the ski patrol, he started working as a guide in the local program for blind
skiers.

Alexander also avidly pursued outdoor adventures, including climbing. Through a
roommate, he met Weihenmayer, a fellow climber who had been blind since the age
of 13. The two started ice climbing together, then tackled some of the state's
14,000-foot peaks.

In 2000, Weihenmayer asked Alexander to go on much more challenging trip:
Everest.

It was one of those things the world told us couldn't be done, Alexander
said. People said we'd get killed, that it was a ridiculous thing to do.

But a team of climbers was put together, and went to Nepal on a practice and
scouting trip in 2000. The climb to the summit was planned for 2001.

Alexander nearly didn't make it on the second trip.

A 150-foot fall

Climbing with Weihenmayer on Mount Amadablam in Nepal, Alexander fell from a
150-foot cliff. Although he wasn't critically injured, he had to be taken off
the mountain by helicopter. After that fall, he developed fluid in his lungs,
and a later virus led to pneumonia. That's not a good way to prepare to climb
Everest.

After a lot of prayer and not much training, he decided to make the trip.

I hoped I'd make the summit, but in reality I thought I might make the base
camp, or maybe the first camp, he said.

But Alexander and Weihenmayer made it to the top. Weihenmayer remains the only
blind climber to make it to the summit and back.

What looked to be a weakness was actually a great strength, Alexander said.
We had a common focus and a common goal.

The success of that trip turned out to be a turning point for both Alexander
and his friends.

'Smoking during the meeting' After the Everest trip Weihenmayer started telling
groups about his adventures, and the skills and personal qualities it takes to
be successful. Alexander had begun talking about his trips before going to
Everest. His first audiences were church groups and the Vail Adventure Speaker
Series.

With a stack of notes and a slide projector in tow, Alexander started getting
more invitations to speak from other churches and schools. In 2001, after the
Everest trip, Alexander received his first invitation to speak for a fee. The
client was an insurance company in Evergreen.

I'd taken one speech class in college, he said. That was my only
qualification.

But one speech led to another, and not long after returning from Everest,
speaking was his main job.

I never thought I'd be doing this for a living, he said. It just worked out.

But speaking and climbing with others share an important quality, Alexander
said.

It's great to touch someone's heart, he said. Even the hearts of people a
speaker may not share much with.

One of his more difficult speeches was to corporate meeting of cigarette maker
Philip Morris.

They were smoking during the meeting, Alexander said. I'm not in favor of
selling more cigarettes, but I talked about personal integrity and staying true
to whatever you're doing.

Staying true to himself is something Alexander's good at, friend Dave Baker
said.

His attention to detail and his care for people make his speaking just as
natural a fit as you can imagine, Baker said.

Traveling the world

Alexander's work has taken him to from coast to coast and as far away as the
Czech Republic. But his speeches are always fueled by his outdoor adventures.

I do this because I feel it's important to talk to people about values, he
said. It's not just stories, it's fundamentals about life.

Many of those fundamentals - teamwork, integrity, trust - are as important in
an office as on a mountain, he said. And being in the outdoors with others
feeds Alexander's spirit. While he's happy to talk about his last job, his eyes
sparkle when talking about his latest outdoor trip.

Last summer Alexander was on an expedition with Weihenmayer that took several
blind high schoolers on a 30-day trek to the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu
in Peru.

Hello all

I arranged a demo of Dragon naturally speaking, a voice recognition software at
my office.
I was very much impressed with the results of it.

To tell something about it, This software, sort of replaces the use of the
keyboard. You can do all functioning of the computer, navigating, editing,
working on spreadsheet etc.

Actually, I was looking it as an accessability tool by which we can give rest
to our hands and save us from RSI related problems, regarding which we
discussed on the list a few days back.
However, I discovered it could be very effectively used as a productivity tool.
One can dictate at very high speeds, much more than what a person can type.

The accuracy rate is also very good. Without any training it recognised my
dictation to almost 95%.

One can do all document formatting including making tables with voice. One can
also use it with Excell very well.

The commands used too are very intutive and it would take just a few minutes to
do most of the operation.

I checked on the price which is Rs.14,999. I enquired if he could give us for a
special price. He readily agreed to give us a 30% discount. He would give
furthur discount depending on volume.

The package includes a special noise cancelling microphone which itself costs
arround Rs. 1,500 upwards. 1 license permitts you to make 2 installations like,
a decktop and laptop.

This can be ideal for students, teachers, reporters, translators,
transcriptionists, lawyers etc. It will also be a good tool for those who do a
lot of correspondence.

For a brief demo, you can download this file:

 Thanks

[AI] scanner related query

2007-09-20 Thread moiz tundawala
Hello friends.
I use the HP scanner. I am usually on the look out for options that
make the task a bit easier for us.
Now, as far as I am concerned, scanning a page consumes nearly one
minute, meaning fifty five to sixty pages in an hour.
I began to explore with the intention of positively change this
situation. To my surprise, I did manage something. HP provides me with
some options- original is double sided (check box), prompt for
aditional pages (check box), view file after scanning (check box).
forget about the first option.
now, i check the second and third boxes and begin scanning. say, after
finishing with ten pages, i wish to stop there. so i hit the done
button. naturally, an image file appears. it is now to be converted
into word by sending text to word.
In my case, when I do this, only the first or last page is converted.
What about the rest?? Does this work? I was elated at the prospect of
reducing about forty percent of my time over all. this. Please help
me.
What if I uncheck the third check box? Where do my files vanish?
Waiting eagerly for a reply.
Moiz.

Hello my friend,

I dont know what is the cause of this problem but I, more or less scan in
the same way you have described. I scan the pages in the MS Office document
Scanning which is available in MS Office 2003. Now, all these options which
you are talking about is available in it and I am able to save a lot of time
. I follow the steps which you have followed but I dont know what have you
done to convert the image file into text. In my case, I choose the convert
to Omni Page submenu by pressing the application key on the image file and,
then select the desired format I want the text to appear in. But, I have
never faced such problems which you are facing.

Hope this helps,

Re: [AI] Voice dictation, good deal

2007-09-20 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi all,

To use dragon naturally speaking effectively with jaws for Windows, you need
middleware called J-say. J-say is bridging technology which will allow jaws
for Windows to be controlled with dragon naturally speaking. As regards the
microphone that comes with the programme, it works for a start. However, it
is preferable to purchase a special noise cancelling microphone. I will be
discussing this during the demonstration.

Also, you need the professional version of dragon naturally speaking. The
key advantage of this version is that it allows you to create macros. So,
let us say that you have a document template. Using a simple voice command,
you can generate that template and have it ready to go.

On my home computer, I have automated most things and, I can work completely
hands-free if I choose to do so.

 Hello all

I arranged a demo of Dragon naturally speaking, a voice recognition
 software at my office.
I was very much impressed with the results of it.

To tell something about it, This software, sort of replaces the use of the

keyboard. You can do all functioning of the computer, navigating,
 editing, working on spreadsheet etc.

Actually, I was looking it as an accessability tool by which we can give
rest to our hands and save us from RSI related problems, regarding which
we discussed on the list a few days back.
However, I discovered it could be very effectively used as a productivity
tool. One can dictate at very high speeds, much more than what a person
 can type.

The accuracy rate is also very good. Without any training it recognised my

 dictation to almost 95%.

One can do all document formatting including making tables with voice. One

can also use it with Excell very well.

The commands used too are very intutive and it would take just a few
minutes to do most of the operation.

I checked on the price which is Rs.14,999. I enquired if he could give us
for a special price. He readily agreed to give us a 30% discount. He would

give furthur discount depending on volume.

The package includes a special noise cancelling microphone which itself
costs arround Rs. 1,500 upwards. 1 license permitts you to make 2
installations like, a decktop and laptop.

This can be ideal for students, teachers, reporters, translators,
transcriptionists, lawyers etc. It will also be a good tool for those who
 do a lot of correspondence.

For a brief demo, you can download this file:
 Download Link (Public):
 http://up-file.com/download/6fcb73708281/DRAGON-1.zip.html

It contains the dictation voice file and the dragon recognised text file

This sunday noon you can also participate in a demo on Skype by our member

 who is using it extensively.

If you wish to participate in it, please give your Skype id on:

 Hi all,

To use dragon naturally speaking effectively with jaws for Windows, you
 need
middleware called J-say. J-say is bridging technology which will allow
 jaws
for Windows to be controlled with dragon naturally speaking. As regards
 the
microphone that comes with the programme, it works for a start. However,
 it
is preferable to purchase a special noise cancelling microphone. I will be
 discussing this during the demonstration.

Also, you need the professional version of dragon naturally speaking. The
key advantage of this version is that it allows you to create macros. So,
let us say that you have a document template. Using a simple voice
 command,
you can generate that template and have it ready to go.

On my home computer, I have automated most things and, I can work
 completely
hands-free if I choose to do so.

 Pranav

[AI] Make 'financial inclusion' more effective : Usha Thorat

2007-09-20 Thread Rajesh Asudani
Make 'financial inclusion' more effective: Usha Thorat

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Canara Bank's initiative of launching the first of its nine
biometric-access ATMs, should be considered beyond the initial investments
involved,
as a move that will grow the bank's business in the long run and make the
'financial inclusion' policy more effective, Reserve Bank of India Deputy
Governor,
Usha Thorat, said here on Thursday.

Biometric-access ATM

After inaugurating the first such ATM and 'smart cards' that even illiterate
villagers can easily use, she said the RBI would be involved in a joint effort
by major banks to reach the banking concept to all regions in India, through a
special exhibition on rails.

Ms. Thorat also suggested some of the women self-help groups that attended the
event at Devanahalli, 30 km from Bangalore, could be helped to visit women
in rural U.P. and Bihar and explain to them how micro credit could empower
them. Mobile ATMs of the type being introduced by Canara Bank would help
villagers
access banking beyond the usual working hours.

Canara Bank's CMD, M. B. N. Rao, said, the bank which conducted a total
business of Rs. 240,000 crore last fiscal had so far introduced 6.5 lakh
'Cansaral'
bank accounts easier to use by rural customers and the target was to add 10
lakh more such accounts this year.
