Subject: [AI] Question related to OE

 Dear AI Members,
I have a question about OE. The last mail which was send by me
regarding IE7 was send to the sender directly. I clicked on reply to
sender it means that this mail would go to the sender of the mail
directly. But unfortunately this mail came in the list. Why is it so?
Then why there is an option of reply to all? If I will click on that
option then who will get my mail? Here who is the sender? Because as
per my thinking the sender means that the person who has sent this
mail will get my reply personally. If I will click on Reply to
sender this should not come in list. Please clear my doubts.
AI members, very sorry for the mistake. I knew that this type of mails
should not be in the list that's why I clicked on reply to sender.
Harish sir, very very sorry. I understand and accept my fault. But I
can't say anything accept sorry. Please please clear my doubts and let
me know that what to do when replying to the sender directly. I
promiss Harish sir, I will never tell anybody about that term which I
wrote in my last mail personally also. Because I don't want to do such
type of things which breaks the law. Thanks a lot sir, I learnt a
 lesson from this mail.
Waiting for the reply and again sorry.
 With Regards,

Hi all,

I really got excited to know about it, KNFB has developed software which can
be installed on N82 as it has 5 mega pixel camera. Although they only say it
works with N82, I think it should also work with N95.

I have yet not tried this software, and I am not sure about it's price, but
it's approximate price is 1500 dollars.

knfb Reading Technology, Inc. is pleased to announce the latest breakthrough
in print accessibility. We have developed software which places the
functionality

read
the contents of the document aloud. At the same time, it can display the
print on the phone's built-in screen and highlight each word as it is
spoken.

The Mobile Reader Product Line:
. Reads most printed documents, from letters and memos to pages in a book
. Reads address labels and package information and instructions
. Easily recognizes U.S. currency
. Displays each sentence visually and highlights each word as it is read
. Stores thousands of pages using easily obtainable flash memory
. Transfers text files to and from computers or Braille note takers
. Adjusts reading speed to suit user's preference.

In addition, with the use of a screen reader, the user can access the other
functions of the phone device including making and receiving phone calls,
personal
information management such as contacts, calendar, etc. Also contains
ability to run accessible GPS programs, access to Adobe PDF files, voice
recorder,
music player and much more.

 Subject: [AI] KNFB Mobile Reader

 Hi all,

I really got excited to know about it, KNFB has developed software
which can be installed on N82 as it has 5 mega pixel camera. Although
they only say it works with N82, I think it should also work with N95.

I have yet not tried this software, and I am not sure about it's
price, but it's approximate price is 1500 dollars.

knfb Reading Technology, Inc. is pleased to announce the latest
breakthrough in print accessibility. We have developed software which
places the functionality of a reading machine into a multifunction
cell phone. The Mobile Reader products can be activated and ready to
use with the touch of a single button on the phone. The user takes a
photo of the print to be read and the character recognition software
in conjunction with high quality text-to-speech will read the contents
of the document aloud. At the same time, it can display the print on
the phone's built-in screen and highlight each word as it is spoken.

 The Mobile Reader Product Line:
Reads most printed documents, from letters and memos to pages in a book .
Reads address labels and package information and instructions . Easily
recognizes U.S. currency . Displays each sentence visually and
highlights each word as it is read . Stores thousands of pages using
easily obtainable flash memory . Transfers text files to and from
computers or Braille note takers . Adjusts reading speed to suit user's
preference.

In addition, with the use of a screen reader, the user can access the
other functions of the phone device including making and receiving
phone calls, personal information management such as contacts,
calendar, etc. Also contains ability to run accessible GPS programs,
access to Adobe PDF files, voice recorder, music player and much more.
Photograph of a hand holding up the Nokia Mobile Reader

 Specifications
  Operating system - Symbian S60, 3rd Ed, FP1 . Supported phone models
 - Nokia N82 . Supported languages - US English or UK English . On
phone free flash storage - 50 Mb required . Flash card storage - up to
 500 images per GB . Memory - 40 Mb free RAM required . Camera - 5
megapixel, autofocus with xenon flash required

 Accessories
  Training page
  Polarizers for camera and flash

 Documentation
Includes printed and on-device help files. Braille available by request.

 Software Upgrades
One year from date of software activation.

 Accessories available for the N82
Accessibility software (Talks or MobileSpeak) . GPS Software . Phone
cases Photograph of a Nokia Mobile Reader from the back

 Features
Reading modes for books, articles and labels; bills and memos.
US printed currency recognition (knfbReader only) . Synchronized text
highlighting with output speech . Text navigation by sentence, word,
 character.

[AI] Graphite - not graphene - could replace silicon transistors;

2008-01-29 Thread Sanjay Prasad
  Graphite - not graphene - could replace silicon transistors;
Single-atom-thick layers of carbon have been touted as
an alternative to the silicon transistor, but now it
looks as if their multi-layered cousin might be a
  better bet

Jason Palmer

A REPLACEMENT for the silicon transistor - the heart of the modern
computer - may be closer than expected, thanks to a material
discovered in the 16th century.

For the last 20 years, the number of transistors that can be
fitted onto a computer chip has doubled about every two years.
This trend can't continue indefinitely, however, as shrinking
silicon transistors down eventually makes them less efficient.

Recently a substance called graphene - hexagonal arrays of carbon
atoms in sheets one atom thick - has been touted as . One hundred
times thinner than the smallest silicon transistor possible,
graphene conducts electricity much more efficiently. It also has
exotic electronic properties which could be useful in quantum
computing.

But there's a problem: graphene sheets tend to curl up and react
with substances around them, making them difficult to build into
devices. Now Yakov Kopelevich and Pablo Esquinazi of the State
University of Campinas in Brazil claim that graphite, the
substance used in pencil leads, might be a more useful
alternative to silicon (Advanced Materials , DOI:
10.1002/adma.200702051). All the properties of graphene are
present in grahite, says Kopelevich. He and Esquinazi point out
that graphite, which is made of multiple stacks of graphene
sheets, is easier and cheaper to produce and doesn't curl up,
thanks to the stabilising effect of the adjacent layers.

In the last few years the pair have shown that, as with graphene,
graphite's conductivity can be altered using a magnetic field and
that current can flow through it as though carried by massless
particles called Dirac fermions. Both properties will be
important in future quantum computers.

It's good that we don't have to think only one layer [of carbon
atoms] will do everything, says Jorge Sofo, a graphene
researcher at Pennsylvania State University.

But according to Millie Dresselhaus, a nano-electronics expert at
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, how much of the magic
of graphene is found in graphite remains to be seen. It is not
clear if graphite's electronic properties can be tuned to suit a
specific application, for example, something done easily in
graphene.

[AI] Cellphone signals could kill TV pictures;

2008-01-29 Thread Sanjay Prasad
 Auctioning off UHF
frequencies freed up by the switch to digital TV could
  lead to poor quality pictures

Paul Marks

THE English seaside town of Whitehaven in Cumbria is often at the
centre of energy debates, with the Sellafield nuclear fuel dump
on its doorstep. Last November, however, it was thrust into the
vanguard of a very different discussion when it became the first
region in the UK to switch off its four analogue terrestrial TV
channels for good and replace them with up to 40 digital ones.

The resulting crisp picture quality has been well received. When
people saw the quality of digital TV pictures they realised just
how ropey analogue TV had been, says Alan Cleaver, deputy editor
of The Whitehaven News . The Netherlands, Finland, Sweden and
Switzerland have already made a full switch, while Germany will
complete by 2008, the US by 2009, France by 2011, the UK by 2012,
Australia by 2013 and Brazil by 2016.

But the pristine pictures may be short-lived. Governments in
Europe and the US are planning to auction off the sections of
the UHF spectrum left vacant because the new TV channels take up
a far slimmer spread of frequencies than analogue services,
thanks to digital compression. Companies will bid to acquire the
frequency bands so they can provide high-bandwidth, always-on
internet services for cellphones and other wireless devices. That
prospect has engineers in both Europe and the US worried. They
warn that the high-power signals from wireless devices could
interfere with digital TV, potentially wrecking the beautiful
images that inspired the switch to digital in the first place.

Interference from mobile devices could cause sudden and complete
loss of pictures, says Walid Sami, a spectrum engineering
specialist at the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in Geneva,
Switzerland, for as long as someone using a cellphone remains
near to the TV receiver. In the US, the National Association of
Broadcasters (NAB) has accused Microsoft and Google, who have
said they will bid for some of the new broadband wireless
services, of playing Russian roulette with digital television's
service quality.

How has the seemingly simple reassignment of electromagnetic
spectrum resulted in this spat? In the US, the auction kicks off
on 24 January when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
begins auctioning the spare 700-megahertz band of the UHF
spectrum, which will be available in 2009. The UK is planning the
first of its auctions for this year.

Both governments hope to raise billions of dollars, as well as
reaping the public relations dividend of expanding broadband
access for their electorates. Eager to license the frequencies
are a range of multinationals including 3G pioneer Qualcomm,
phone giant ATT, cellphone network Verizon and Google.

They are excited by the prospect of new gaming, internet and
voice-based mobile gadgets that will be made possible by the move
into UHF bands. What's more, signals transmitted via UHF travel
much further than signals used by Wi-Fi, its longer-range cousin
WiMax and today's cellphones, which operate in the microwave
range and so cannot transmit at high power. This means the next
generation of mobile gadgets could work in areas that today only
receive patchy coverage, and will be less likely to cut out
suddenly.

It sounds great, but what worries European broadcasters is that
the signals emanating from cellphones are much stronger than
those typically arriving at a digital TV receiver. Receivers
separate out the different TV channels or stations using filters,
which reject all signals except those on the frequency belonging
to a given channel. But if an incoming signal is above a certain,
low power limit and is of a similar frequency, filters become
swamped and fail to reject those signals, even if they are not
exactly the frequency the filter is designed to accept. When the
power exceeds this limit, says Sami, the receiver becomes
saturated, causing interference.

Tests undertaken by the EBU show that using some wireless gadgets
near a digital TV set can destroy TV pictures and sound . Sami
says a next-generation broadband cellphone operating at around
250 milliwatts will easily swamp the incoming 0.5-milliwatt
signal for an indoor digital TV aerial, if the two are operating
at close frequencies.

Interference could also happen even if a UHF mobile device is not
on an adjacent frequency to the TV channel, but is simply in the
UHF range. Many mobiles use cheap oscillator circuits that
produce unwanted harmonics that can cause interference as much as
12 MHz on either side of the frequency it is operating on.

One solution to both kinds of interference, says the EBU, is to
keep slots between digital TV and mobile devices blank. If the
phone to base station signal is not within 16 to 48 MHz of the TV
channel, things will be OK, says Sami. The EBU is negotiating
with Europe's telecoms regulator CEPT in a bid to make such
guard bands compulsory.

[AI] Cell Phone Can Read Documents for Blind

2008-01-29 Thread Shiv

The Associated Press

Last Updated: January 28, 2008 00:21:02

BALTIMORE (AP) - Chris Danielsen fidgets with the cell phone, holding it over a
$20 bill.

``Detecting orientation, processing U.S. currency image,'' the phone says in a
flat monotone before Danielsen snaps a photo. A few seconds later, the phone
says, ``Twenty dollars.''

Danielsen, a spokesman for the National Federation of the Blind, is holding the
next generation of computerized aids for the blind and visually impaired.

The Nokia cell phone is loaded with software that turns text on photographed
documents into speech. In addition to telling whether a bill is worth $1, $5,
$10 or $20, it also allows users to read anything that is photographed, whether
it's a restaurant menu, a phone book or a fax.

While the technology is not new, the NFB and the software's developer say the
cell phone is the first to incorporate the text-to-speech ability.

``We've had reading devices before,'' Danielsen said, noting similar software
is already available in a larger handheld reader housed in a personal digital
assistant. Companies such as Code Factory SL, Dolphin Computer Access Ltd. and
Nuance Communications Inc. also provide software that allows the blind to
use cell phones and PDAs.

Inexpensive hand-held scanners such as WizCom Technologies Ltd.'s SuperPen can
scan limited amounts of text, read it aloud and even translate from other
languages.

However, the $2,100 NFB device combines all of those functions in one smart
phone, said James Gashel, vice president of business development for K-NFB
Reading
Technology Inc., which is marketing the phone as a joint venture between the
federation and software developer Ray Kurzweil.

``It is the next step, but this is a huge leap,'' Gashel, who is blind, said in
a telephone interview. ``I'm talking to you on the device I also use to
read things. I can put it in my pocket and at the touch of a button, in 20
seconds, be reading something I need to read in print.''

Ray Kurzweil, who developed the first device that could convert text into audio
in the 1970s and the current NFB device, said portability is only the first
step. Future versions of the device will recognize faces, identify rooms and
translate text from other languages for the blind and the sighted.

The inventor plans to begin marketing the cell phone in February through K-NFB
Reading Technology. The software will cost $1,595 and the cell phone is expected
to cost about $500, Kurzweil said.

Dave Doermann, president of College Park-based Applied Media Analysis said his
company is working on similar software for smart phones that could be used
by the military for translation and by the visually impaired.

``We don't anticipate ours being that expensive, but unfortunately we're not
quite to the release yet,'' said Doermann, who is also co-director of the
University
of Maryland's Laboratory for Language and Media Processing.

Doermann said the company, which has received funding from the Department of
Defense and the National Eye Institute, hopes to have its software ready in
the next 12 to 18 months.

Kurzweil's device uses speech software provided by Nuance, said Chris
Strammiello, the director of product management at Nuance, who said the company
has
also developed a prototype reader that uses the Internet to access more
powerful server-side computers.

``As you can harness the power of remote environments and do that so quickly
with the Web technologies, it gives a lot more capability, flexibility and
options to the way you solve these type of problems,'' Strammiello said.

There are about 10 million blind and visually impaired people in the U.S., a
number that is expected to double in the next 30 years as baby boomers age.

Kurzweil said those with vision problems are not the only ones expected to
benefit from the technology. Dyslexics, for example, are expected to be among
the users of the current device because of its ability to highlight each word
as it's read aloud, helping them cope with their disability, which affects
the ability to read. The highlighting function can also help them improve their
reading skills, he said.

``What's new here is both blind people and kids can do this with a device that
fits in their shirt pocket,'' Kurzweil said.

Marc Maurer, president of the National Federation of the Blind, said the device
and its PDA predecessor are a ``form of hand-held vision'' that will make
the visual environment ``much more readily available to the blind.''

[AI] (Tech Dose of the Day) Ruby on Rails, WIKI, XSS, JSON, Web 2.0, DOJO, Fixed-Bid Time-and-Materials, CODEC, AJAX, RAID and much much more!

2008-01-29 Thread vishnu ramchandani
Tech Dose of the Day

Ruby on Rails, WIKI, XSS, JSON, Web
2.0, DOJO, Fixed-Bid
Time-and-Materials, CODEC, AJAX, RAID, etc.

Ruby on Rails
What is Ruby on Rails ?
Ruby on Rails is a free web application framework that
aims to increase the speed and ease with which
database-driven web sites can be created and offers
skeleton code frameworks (scaffolding) from the
outset. Often shortened to Rails, or RoR, Ruby on
Rails is an open source project written in the Ruby
programming language, and applications using the Rails
framework are developed using the
Model-View-Controller architecture.
What is its significance and technicalities?
Ruby on Rails led the charge among next-generation web
application frameworks, popularizing features that are
now considered standard, such as scaffolding,
object-relational mapping and simple installation.
Other projects such as Django and TurboGears followed
suit.
The fundamental Ruby on Rails principles include
Convention over Configuration (CoC) and Don't repeat
yourself (DRY).
Convention over Configuration means a developer only
needs to specify unconventional aspects of the
application. For example, if there's a class Sale in
the model, the corresponding table in the database is
called sales by default. It is only if one deviates
from this convention, such as calling the table
products_sold, that one needs to write code
regarding these names.
Don't repeat yourself means that information is
located in a single, unambiguous place. For example,
using ActiveRecord, the developer does not need to
specify database column names in class definitions.
Instead, Ruby can retrieve this information from the
database.
Because of these defaults, Rails is often referred to
as opinionated software, which has been a point of
contention for many critics of Rails.
Like many contemporary web frameworks, Rails uses the
Model-View-Controller (MVC) architecture for
organising application programming. Rails provides
'out of the box' scaffolding which can quickly
construct most of the models and views needed for a
basic website. Other helpful development tools come
with or are installed with Rails, such as the WEBrick
web server, and the Rake build system. Rails is also
noteworthy for its extensive use of the JavaScript
libraries Prototype and Script.aculo.us for Ajax and
its graphical interface. For web services Rails
initially supported lightweight SOAP; later it was
replaced by RESTful web services. The recommended REST
based programming structure changes drastically in
version 1.2 .
Some of the projects using Rails -
• Basecamp – online project management
• BBC Programme Catalogue – video and audio archives
from BBC television and radio
• Blurb.com – personal book publishing
• ChaCha.com - a human-powered search engine
• Justin.tv - A live video streaming platform
• OpenCongress – Aggregated news and official data
• bout the US Congress
• Penny Arcade – gamer-humor webcomic
• Revolution Health – a health portal
• Twitter – micro-blogging service
• yellowpages.com – US telephone directory

WIKI
What is WIKI ?
A wiki is a medium which can be edited by anyone with
access to it, and provides an easy method for linking
from one page to another. Wikis are typically
collaborative websites, though there are now also
single-user offline implementations. Ward Cunningham,
developer of the first wiki, WikiWikiWeb, originally
described it as the simplest online database that
could possibly work. One of the best-known wikis is
Wikipedia.
A wiki enables documents to be written
collaboratively, in a simple markup language using a
web browser. A single page in a wiki is referred to as
a wiki page, while the entire body of pages, which
are usually highly interconnected via hyperlinks, is
the wiki. A wiki is essentially a database for
creating, browsing and searching information.
A defining characteristic of wiki technology is the
ease with which pages can be created and updated.
Generally, there is no review before modifications are
accepted. Many wikis are open to the general public
without the need to register any user account.
Sometimes session log-in is requested to acquire a
wiki-signature cookie for autosigning edits. Many
edits, however, can be made in real-time, and appear
almost instantaneously online. This can lead to abuse
of the system. Private wiki servers require user
authentication to edit, sometimes even to read pages.
 What is its usefulness?
Why wiki? Well.. Some of the innumerable reasons -
• Creating a knowledge base on a specific topic.
• Writing documentation or a FAQ.
• Collaborative writing.
• Product reviews and comparisons.
• Creating how-tos.

tab. uncheck keep a copy on the server.

Subject: [AI] Regarding OE.

 Respected friends,
I am stuck in a problem.
I mostly was receiving my mails to outlook express and the mails in
 gmail were archived.
I did not want to archive them, but I wanted to delete them.
So I tried to change my gmail pop and forwarding settings. And when I
tried to change my settings the mails never come to outlook express. I
can send mails from outlook express.
I think the problem is with pop settings of gmail. Could anybody one
of you please explain the steps how to configure?
 Thanking you .
 Samuel.

 Friends,
I'm using Office xp in office with Jaws 6.0 The problem is JAWS is not
reading the line number. It is necessary for me as I have to take
print out of letters etc. Whenever I press insert delete jaws says
line -1 and the column number. Please let me know how to rectify this
 problem.
 thanks
