Cure for blindness 'within five years'

Last Updated: 12:01am BST 06/06/2007

Roger Highfield - a real chance of success

Pioneering stem cell transplants to restore the sight of people
affected by a leading cause of blindness could start within five
years, according to a British
team which has reported successful human eye cell implants.

More than 500,000 people in the UK have irreversible blindness caused
by macular degeneration.

The disease is marked by a progressive loss of central vision due to
degeneration of the macula - a pigmented spot at the back of the
retina.

Now an anonymous American philanthropist, who saw his father go blind,
has given a London-led team almost £4 million towards the cost of
developing a stem
cell therapy, where eye cells from an embryo are used to restore sight.

Prof Pete Coffey and Lyndon da Cruz, an eye surgeon, of the UCL
Institute of Ophthalmology, have teamed up with Prof Peter Andrews, of
the University of
Sheffield, to conduct trials.

Mr da Cruz said yesterday: ''Given age- related macular degeneration
could affect up to one third of the population by 2070 the potential
to create a treatment
strategy for this condition is critical and may have a major impact on
vision loss in the community.''

The team estimates the stem cell implants could start within five
years and eventually become a routine, 45-minute operation.

Prof Coffey said: If it hasn't become routine in about 10 years it
would mean we haven't succeeded. It has to be something that's
available to large numbers
of people.

As a trial run for the operations, the team has repaired the vision of
patients with macular degeneration with tissue from their own eyes,
moving it from
the region of the eye responsible for peripheral vision to the macula.

The treatment is not initially aimed at the transparent skin of nerve
cells that detect light but at an underlying carpet of cells called
the retinal pigment
epithelium, or RPE.

RPE was transplanted by surgeons, without the use of stem cells in an
experimental procedure on 12 patients at Moorfields Eye Hospital,
London, using RPE
taken from another site in their own retina.

However, replacing RPE in what are long, complex operations is of
limited benefit in treating common eye diseases such as macular
degeneration.

Mr Da Cruz, having transplanted and moved tissue in the eye, has seen
more than 25 per cent of patients reporting an improvement in what is
otherwise an
untreatable disease, demonstrating that cell transplants work in principle.

From stem cells taken from early human embryos, Prof Coffey has found
a way to turn them into RPE cells by adding growth factors. The team
has successfully
tested this method on rats.

Prof Alistair Fielder, senior medical adviser for the eye research
charity Fight for Sight, said the project represents a real chance to
tackle this untreatable
condition and bring hope to many.

Re: [AI] any solution for virus in nokia 6600

2008-07-11 Thread Chetan Sharma
Hi vetri!

To restore my phone to its original factory settings, i did the same steps.
My problem is that after cleaning the memory card and restoring the phone
to its factory settings, as soon as i restore the data from memory card,
phone gets infected. it seems my antivirus is not able to detect the virus
on memory card and sincemy back up files are on it, i can't format the
same. My point is how to clean the back up data on memory card so that phone
doesn't get infected once data is restored? as i mentioned earlier, i have
tried mcafee and symantech mobile security, but as per their scan results,
no virus is there. anything else i should try out? any alternate tool?

If you have not been successful in removing it, then the only option
is to format your phone. Do the following to do so:

When you are on the stand by mode, press *#7370# and you will be asked
whether you want to restore your phone to it's factory settings. Press
the left soft key to okay it and then you will be asked to enter the
security code. By default it is 12345 and you should remember if you
have changed it. After entering the security code, press the left soft
key again. Now you will here a beep sound and after 30 seconds or so
press the left soft key three times to bypass the timezone settings
and so on. After a few more seconds, your phone should have been
completely formatted. Please remember that all of your data including
talks, contacts etc will be lost and you will have to install them
 fresh. Goodluck.

 Vetri.

Just try flashing your phone to a new available firmware. backup the
required data on your phone before you start the update. If you can remove

2008-07-11 Thread Sushmeetha_Blindinfo
Dear Friend

Actually speaking, your phone gets rid of viruses, using the different anti
virus softwares.

But the data, which you have backed up is infected with virus.

That's the reason, the moment you restore the data, the virus pops up again.

To resolve this either you will need to go to a professional person, who
will clean your data then restore.

Who may charge you a BOM.

Or you will have to compromise with loosing your data.

This is really not the option, we would be looking or opting for, but that's
how the fact is.

The above mentioned fact, is from my experience, hope you get a better
option.

[AI] online risk due to ...

2008-07-11 Thread firoz
We believe you'll find this article quite interesting.
BBC NEWS
Online risk due to browser flaws
Almost half the online population is at risk because users have not installed
security
updates to their browsers, says a study.
The Swiss Institute of Technology, Google and IBM conducted the study and found
600
million users had not updated their browsers.
Failure to apply patches promptly or missing them entirely is a recipe for
disaster,
the report said.
Cyber criminals are frequently using websites to attack users, it added.
The report authors recommended that a best before date, similar to the food
industry,
should be introduced to browsers, helping to educate users about the need to
refresh
their browser.
Browsers are often patched by software providers to tackle recently discovered
flaws and security holes.
Criminals exploit these holes with malicious code hidden in websites to hijack
machines.
BROWSER MARKET SHARE*
Internet Explorer 78%
Firefox 16%
Safari 3%
Opera 1%
*Source: Swiss Institute of Technology
The study said Firefox users tended to use the most up-to-date versions, while
Internet
Explorer users were the slowest to update their browsers.
More than 83% of Firefox users were using the latest, most secure browser
version,
compared to 65% of Safari users, 56% of Opera users and 47% of Internet Explorer
users.
The study said that not using the latest version of a browser was only one part
of
the security issues faced by net users.
'Insecurity iceberg'
Dubbed the insecurity iceberg, the study said many users were at risk due to
vulnerable
plug-ins.
Plug-ins are small programs which extend the features and functionality of some
browsers.
Vulnerable plug-ins that are accessible (and exploitable) through the web
browser
extend the insecurity iceberg and form the part hidden below the water surface,
the report authors noted.
The study said users were not updating to the latest version of a browser or
plug-in
fast enough.
Our measurement confirmed that web browsers which implement an internal
auto-update
patching mechanism do better in terms of faster update adoption rates than those
without, it said.
The study commended the single-click update feature of Firefox's browser as
the
most efficient patching mechanism.

Re: [AI] any solution for virus in nokia 6600

2008-07-11 Thread dinesh thole
Hai,
You should try quickheal antivirus.
You can download the demo from www.quickheal.com
It is a very good antivirus.
You can connect the mobile phone to the computer and scan the memory card
with this antivirus.
Before scanning, update the version of quickheal with the latest dated
updates.
Hope this helps, all the best.
Warm regards.

My problem is that after cleaning the memory card and restoring the

to its factory settings, as soon as i restore the data from memory card,
phone gets infected. it seems my antivirus is not able to detect the virus
on memory card and sincemy back up files are on it, i can't format

same. My point is how to clean the back up data on memory card so that
 phone
doesn't get infected once data is restored? as i mentioned earlier, i
 have
tried mcafee and symantech mobile security, but as per their scan results,
no virus is there. anything else i should try out? any alternate tool?

Please remember that all of your data including
talks, contacts etc will be lost and you will have to install them
 fresh. Goodluck.

Re: [AI] any solution for virus in nokia 6600

2008-07-11 Thread Adhimoolam Vetrivel Murugan
mcafee and symantech mobile security will not remove them since they
are meant for mobile platform. Not sure of free virus cleaner for S60
phones. So perhaps someone else has to throw light on this subject.
Does your memory card contain back-up files only related to your
phone? If so, then I am afraid that your phone cannot be restored from
those back-up files free of virus. If you are not able to format the
memory card because of some crucial files not related to your phone,
then perhaps you should simply move them to your system and format the
memory card. That's why it is important that you create back-up of
your phone memory when your phone is in it's best performing status.
My assumption is that your phone already had virus when you created
back-up and I am not sure whether any virus removal tool that can
scann the compressed back-up files and detect virus since those
viruses also could have been compressed along with your phone software
files.

Re: [AI] Scanned Study material for Banking Service Written Test

2008-07-11 Thread Roopakshi Pathania
Hi,

I assume that this exams is for Probationary officers?

Here are a few resources:
1. To brush up your math concepts, you can go to this site.
http://www.onemathematicalcat.org/
To view the math formulae, you need a plugin for IE downloadable from:
http://www.dessci.com/en/products/mathplayer/download.htm?src=mplogo
This plugin is perfectly safe.

2. To solve sample questions visit here.
http://bestsamplequestions.com/
Although this site does not specifically contain written bank exams, it has
sample questions for CAT, GRE, GMAT, etc. Many of the topics are common with
bank written examinations.
3. NAB Delhi has a current affairs magazine. You can subscribe to it.

[AI] Volleyball goes the braille way in Chennai

2008-07-11 Thread Sameer

Volleyball goes the braille way in Chennai

Sam Daniel

Tuesday, July 8, 2008 (Chennai)

It's an annual event the visually challenged look forward to in Chennai - a
volleyball tournament exclusively for them. This year, it was a fight
between

fifteen teams from all over south

India.

In this form of the game, the ball is thrown under the net and the players
'hear' the ball advancing towards them. The rules are strict. Those with
partial

vision are blind folded.

''It's a team effort. Since we are all in the same school we used to
practice for a week and we get good understanding,'' says one of the
participant girls.

Now we want to participate in running, shot put, discus etc, she adds.

And for the celebrity chief guests, witnessing the action was a moving
experience.

''This puts us all to shame. We struggle with many small things in life.
They show us how to live happily,'' says singer Anuradha Sriram.

Other guests too feel the same.

''The way in which they are playing, I saw it for the first time. It's
amazing,'' says R Sekar, Commissioner of Police, Chennai.

But sadly, at the national level, there are not many events for the
differently abled to showcase their talent and this effort by a local NGO is
a model

worth replicating.

[AI] SPECIAL LAWs' FOR DISABILITIES : QUESTIONS ANSWERS

2008-07-11 Thread KODAKKAL SHIVAPRASAD

Q. What are the goals of the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities,
Protection of Rights and Full participation) Act, 1995?

¨ To integrate person with disabilities and provide them with
opportunities for full participation in society

¨ To create a society in which disabled persons would enjoy status on par
with non-disabled person

Q. Are all disabled people entitled to the benefits of the disabilities Act?

A. The general benefits of the disabilities Act are meant for all disabled
persons. However the rights earmarked specially for “persons with disability”
are for only those affected by any of the following disabilities, to the extent
of 40% or more, as certified by a Recognised medical authority:

¨ Blindness

¨ Low-vision

¨ Leprosy-cured

¨ Hearing impairment

¨ Locomotor disability, or any form of cerebral palsy

¨ Mental retardation

¨ Mental illness

¨

Q. How does the disabilities Act set out to achieve its goals?

A. To achieve its goals, the Disabilities Act provides for the following:

¨ Education of disabled persons

¨ Employment of disabled persons

¨ Special facilities for disabled persons for use and access of public
transport system, civic amenities and public buildings / places

¨ Preferential allotment to help disabled persons set up businesses and
factories, build own houses, special schools and special recreation Centres.

¨ Prevention and early detection of disabilities

¨ Rehabilitation and social security of disabled persons

¨ Research and manpower development on disability issues

¨ Recognition of institutions for disabled persons

¨ Settings up of dedicated authorities at central and state levels, for
“coordination”, “execution” and “adjudication” with regard to implementing the
Act.

Finding ways of preventing disability in the first place can save much agony.
What does the act say about that?

Q.What steps must be taken by the government for prevention and early
detection of occurrence of Disability?

A.Government and local authorities must:

¨ Undertake surveys, investigations and research on causes of disabilities

¨ Promote various methods of preventing disabilities

¨ Screen all the children at least once a year to identify ‘at risk’ cases

¨ Organise awareness campaigns and disseminate information for general
hygiene, health and sanitation

¨ Take measures for pre-natal, perinatal and post-natal care of mother and
child

¨ Educate the public through pre-schools, schools, primary health centres,
village level workers and anganwadi workers

¨ Create awareness among the masses, through television, radio and other
mass media, on the causes of disability and preventive measures

“I am well-qualified, but because of my disability no one employs me. Will the
act help me find a suitable job?”

Q. What does the Disabilities Act provide for employment of disabled persons?

A. The Act provides the following to ensure employment for disabled persons:

¨ 3% vacancies on identified posts in each government establishment are
reserved for disabled persons, 1% each for: (i) persons with blindness or low
vision (ii) persons with hearing impairment and (iii) persons with locomotor

¨ Carry-forward of a reserved vacancy in the next recruitment year if not
filled in a recruitment year. Filling up of the reserved vacancy by interchange
among the three categories in the next recruitment year if it remains unfilled
or when a vacancy cannot be filled by a given category of disabled persons due
to the nature of the vacancy.

¨ Formulate schemes on related matters like: Training, relaxation of upper
age limit, regulating the employment, health and safely measures, creation of a
non-handicapping environment in work-places employing disabled persons

¨ 3% reservation for persons with disabilities in all poverty alleviation
schemes

Q. How does the Act protect a disabled person from discrimination at work?

A. The Act stresses that employers must provide for a non-handicapping
environment in places where persons with disabilities are employed. The Act
also mandates that:

¨ A disabled person working in any government establishment cannot be
denied promotion merely on the ground of his disability.

¨ Anyone employed in a government established who acquires a disability
during his employment:

v Cannot be dispensed with or reduced in rank

v If, after acquiring the disability, an employee is not suitable to continue
on his post, he may be shifted to a suitable post with the same pay-scale and
service benefits

v Pending availability of a suitable post, a supernumerary post should be
created for such a person.

Q. Does the Act provide for employment in the private sector?

A. There are no reservations mandated for the

[AI] Electronic Papyrus: (a News Story about the Launch of a New E-Book Reader)

2008-07-11 Thread Viraj
Electronic Papyrus
12 Jul 2008, 0001 hrs IST

Tablet sized e-Book readers that allow people to peruse their favourite authors
on portable screens have several advantages over conventional paper tomes.

Hundreds of books can be stored on the same device, readers can adjust text
size and font and read in low or even no light. Although the device runs on
electricity, the production of e-Books does not consume paper, ink and other
resources used to produce printed books.

Yet in spite of such obvious benefits e-Books have never really caught on with
the same zing other devices like cellphones and hand-held personal music
players have.

One of the main reasons is that the act of reading a book is a complex,
conditioned behaviour which involves and is associated with the feel,
flexibility and even smell of paper.

An e-Book reader, on the other hand, comes across as a hard, bulky machine
where the page is made of glass and the print is way too glossy.

All that could change, however, with the introduction of a new screen
technology called organic thin-film-transistor which uses polymers rather than
silicon and thus allows for more flexible materials.

The result has been the launch of a new e-Book reader manufactured by a Dutch
company, with an ultra-thin flexible screen that can be folded up and put in a
pocket.

If the new format catches on it could change reading habits far more
dramatically than even DVDs, streaming video and MP3 players have changed the
way we watch films or listen to music.

That's because while the alternate big-screen or home theatre experience is
still a viable - and, often, preferred - option as far as cinema and recordings
are concerned, book reading cannot be enhanced any further, either socially or
in any technical sense.

But besides storage capacity, design and flexibility, other factors will also
determine e-Books' success in the future.

Text, for instance, can be searched automatically and cross-referenced using
hyperlinks, making them ideal for any work which benefits from such functions.

Also, since most offer wireless internet connectivity, books can be purchased
and downloaded directly without having to visit a bookstore.

This kind of ease of distributing text means that they can be used to stimulate
higher sales of books and so help authors and publishers in the process too.
