Re: [AI] How can a blind teachcomputer to a sighted person?

2008-09-10 Thread George Abraham
I tend to agree. I do think that a totally blind person can definitely teach
computers to a sighted person. The blind person would need to have a degree
of mastery on the subject and an ability to communicate effectively. I also
do believe that the techniques used to teach might be a little at variance
from the conventional.

Yes he can. I speak from experience. I have helpped a number of sited
colleagues and asorted family members with computers. You need to know the
screen layout which your screen reader will tell you.

Some sited people may not understand the concept of highlihted text, the
insertion pointer and so on. You may have to explain those but other than
that, there are no real problems.

[AI] blind man opens eyes of villagers

2008-09-10 Thread prateek aggarwal
RANGPAR: He may be visually impaired, but he sure does see things
others don't. Ratna Aal, 26, resident of Rangpar village, has been
enlightening villagers
on the inaction of panchayat for the last two years.

The panchayat has claimed it has done development work like repair of
road connecting village to highway, planted trees along the roadside
and cut down
gando baval.

Aal, a farmer, got documents under Right to Information Act (RTI) to
show none of these things have been done. "I've been trying to find
solid facts that
panchayat has done precious little in the village. However, talati and
panchayat members have still not parted with certain information and
have even given
misleading information," says Aal, who has studied till class X.

In these documents the gram panchayat claims it has spent Rs 27,187 on
tree plantation, Rs 18,503 on road repairs under different schemes,
which have not
been implemented.

For instance, he says, panchayat claims there is no gando baval along
the roadside, but anyone can see it growing and causing problems to
passers-by.

"Also, where are the new trees planted? Do you see them?" he asks this
TOI correspondent while showing him around the village.

Rangpar is a small village with around 750 people, 25 km from Wankaner
in Rajkot district. When he first confronted the panchayat, it
insulted him.

Aal has met several officials with the documents but no one has taken
notice so far. But, he is determined to carry on till the village gets
justice and
all facilities it's entitled to under different government schemes.

"Women have to walk at least two km to fetch drinking water during
summer. I may be blind, but my vision is clear - no villager should
suffer because of
lack of basic civic amenities," says the braveheart.

Village sarpanch Ratabhai Gogia says, "We had cut down gando baval
last year but it has grown rapidly. We had also repaired the road but
lots of vehicles
use this road so it is difficult to maintain it." He claims to have
planted trees, many of which did not survive.

[AI] FireFox add-on enhances Web for visually impaired

2008-09-10 Thread prateek aggarwal
FireFox add-on enhances Web for visually impaired -
Network World

Visually impaired Internet users will find surfing the Web easier with
a new Firefox add-on that takes normal Web pages and makes them more
accessible to
people with low vision.

The add-on, LowBrowse, is the first program enabling people with
moderate or severe vision loss to "both view Web pages as the original
Web author intended
and read the text on those pages tailored to their own visual needs,"
says program creator
Lighthouse International.

Several pre-existing programs allow fully blind people to surf the
Web, by reading text and descriptions of images aloud to them.
LowBrowse takes a slightly different approach with several features,
described by Lighthouse as follows:

* Users can configure their preferences for font, text size, color
contrast and letter spacing, and have their preferences remain
consistent for all Web
pages.
* Users can easily enlarge images simply by holding a button and
wiggling the mouse.
* Users with severe low vision can augment LowBrowse's accessibility
with speech output.
* Users can simultaneously view the Web page as the Web author
intended it to be viewed and access the text (in a separate reading
frame), enabling visually
impaired users to have the same view of the page that able-sighted users see.
LowBrowse is available as a free download at the program's Web site.
http://lighthouse.org/aboutus/lowbrowse
Firefox users who haven't upgraded to Version 3 must do so in order to
use LowBrowse. It will also be available at addons.mozilla.org in
coming weeks, Lighthouse
says.

Based on open source technology, LowBrowse was developed by Lighthouse
with a grant from the National Eye Institute.

[AI] Apple helps visually impaired in accessibility

2008-09-10 Thread prateek aggarwal

Written by Kyle Buckley

Today, Apple released a new version of iTunes bringing it to version
8. Apple also announced new iPod Nanos.

Briefly mentioned in the Steve Jobs keynote, is the ability for iTunes
to now be used using VoiceOver in Mac OS X and Window-Eyes in Windows
XP or Windows
Vista. VoiceOver and Window-Eyes are screen reading software for blind
and visually impaired users.

>From Apple:
Block quote start
iTunes 8, which is screen-reader friendly for both the Mac and the PC,
provides compatibility with VoiceOver in Mac OS X Leopard and
Window-Eyes 7.0 for
Windows XP and Windows Vista.
Block quote end

Not mentioned during the keynote is the accessibility features of the
new generation of iPod Nano.

>From Apple:
Block quote start
The new iPod nano (4th generation) — the world's most popular music
player — introduces spoken menus that let visually impaired music
lovers browse and
select songs without viewing the screen. Instead, you'll hear a
synthesized voice speaking the names of menus, songs, and artists.

To take advantage of spoken menus, you will need:
List of 4 items
• iPod nano (4th generation)
• iTunes 8
• Mac OS X v10.4.11 or later
• Windows Vista or Windows XP Home or Professional (Service Pack 3 or later)

Not only is this great news for blind consumers but this is great news
for consumers who have a hard time reading small text. Blind and
visually impaired
music fans have been largely ignored when it comes to accessible music
players. Kudos Apple!

This model has something called "voice play" feature. You can apparently
speak the artist or the title of the song and it will play it if the track
exists. I wonder how well this works though...

[AI] sharing softwares at AI convention

2008-09-10 Thread Asudani, Rajesh

May I request all participants of AI convention to bring with them such of the
softwares/utilities which they think are useful to VI persons and which may be
lawfully shared.

Such recent things in my opinion, include: demo of Hindi jaws, JAWS 10 public
beta, Real speak sangeeta TTS offered by FS with JAWS 10, etc.

I am putting in a special request for it as it is quite difficult/time
consuming to download through internet or they are not available online, and
they may be legally shared at the convention through pen drives or so!!

Any other things fulfilling above criteria may also be suggested.

Active cooperation of members is requested for this endeavor.

Regards

Rajesh

Re: [AI] Hindi version of JAWS, What is the input method?

2008-09-10 Thread Rohit Trivedi
I feel the Microsoft method of typing is the easiest. How ever those who
know Hindi typing already may find it little difficult. Forthis you may
install SAFA and other keyboards also get installed. You may then use any
other screen reader or no screen reader and keyboards can be changed with
Ctrl shift. You may get further support from NAB helpline.

[AI] Facebook unveils new look

Facebook unveils new look

SAN FRANCISCO (AP): Since he started Facebook in college 4years ago, Mark
Zuckerberg has learned _ sometimes painfully _ that he can't make significant
changes to the popular online hangout without triggering an uproar among
indignant users who preferred the status quo.

But Zuckerberg, still only 24, is hoping he has found a way to ease the journey
down a different road so he won't have to issue public apologies like he
did in each of the previous two years after springing new products on users.

His theory will face a major test on Wednesday when Facebook begins forcing its
100 million users to adapt to a redesigned Web site, whether they like the
new look or not.

Since unveiling the makeover seven weeks ago, Facebook had left it up to users
to decide whether they wanted to switch over. If they didn't like what they
saw, the converts could just click on a link to switch back to the old format.

But that option will be taken away from all users by the end of the week, a
shift that Zuckerberg already knows will alienate some of Facebook's audience
and raise the risk of driving more traffic to rival social networks like
MySpace and Bebo.

``Any change can be a big deal to our users because this is how they connect
with their family and friends,'' Zuckerberg said. ``So when you move things
around, it can be perceived as being not a positive thing even when it's a
positive change.''

About 40 million users already have checked out the new design and about 30
million embraced it without reverting to the old look, Zuckerberg said. But
the seeds of an uprising already have been planted on Facebook's own site,
where several groups and petitions have cropped up to protest the change.

``It's not that we don't want change, period, it's that we don't like these
particular changes,'' said Scott Sanders, 19, an Austin Peay University student
who started one of the petitions opposing the redesign. ``You have to navigate
more and you have to click more to get to personal profiles. It's too much
effort to get to basic information.''

Facebook's facelift separates users' personal profiles into different areas of
the site and provides more tools that are meant to make it easier to share
information and photos.

The revisions also shift various applications to the bottom of a person's home
page and clears up more white space _ a move that Sanders worries will lead
to more intrusive advertising on the site, although Zuckerberg says that won't
happen.

Hoping to minimize the sting of the anticipated backlash, Facebook announced
the planned makeover in May and then waited until July to take the wraps off.
The transition period since then was aimed at giving users time to make
suggestions and get used to the change.

The gradual approach differed from how Zuckerberg and the rest of Facebook's
unusually young management team have managed past revisions to the site.

In 2006, the Palo Alto-based startup infuriated thousands of users by
introducing a tool called ``news feeds'' that automatically broadcast certain
personal
details. Last year, Facebook faced another revolt when it rolled out a tracking
device, dubbed ``Beacon,'' that tracked and shared information about users'
shopping habits and other activities at other Web sites.

In both instances, Zuckerberg wound up apologizing for going too far and
placated the protesters by giving more control over news feeds and Beacon. News
feeds are now considered indispensable by many users, but Beacon still hasn't
gained traction.

With Facebook's audience now roughly 10 times larger than when news feeds first
came out two years ago, Zuckerberg understood he needed to do a better job
preparing for changes.

``There is more weight on making things smooth when you are dealing with 100
million people,'' he said. ``No one cared as much when a bunch of students
from a few colleges were complaining about some changes to some Web site.''

Although he is still hoping to persuade Zuckerberg to retreat from some of the
changes included in the redesign, Sanders suspects resistance might be futile
this time.

``I definitely won't stop using Facebook because it's still the best social
network out there,'' said Sanders, who has been using the site for two years.
``People will probably protest the changes in the beginning, but then they will
just get used to them.''

Pinnacle launches upgraded version of editing software

New Delhi (PTI): Home video editing solutions provider Pinnacle Systems on
Wednesday launched an upgraded version of its software, priced between Rs
3,500-Rs
8,000 in the country.

The new version -- Pinnacle Studio Version 12 -- would be available in the
country from the end of this month, Pinnacle India Country Manager Ashish Bakshi
said.

However, along with the hardware the software is priced between Rs 17,900 and
Rs 19,900, he added.

"Video editing is increasingly becoming popular, both as a hobby and as a
profession, and the use of video editing is not restricted to people from
younger
age," Bakshi said.

The new version comes with features like direct uploading on YouTube and 3gp
format output for viewing videos on mobile phones, sharing videos.

Bakshi said consumers who are using the earlier version of the software can
also upgrade to the new version by paying Rs 3,000-Rs 4,000.

Pinnacle is also working to launch low-cost products also for the home segment,
he added.

[AI] Putting a 'Korset' on the spread of computer viruses

2008-09-10 Thread renuka warriar
The Hindu News Update Service
default/empty
News Update Service
Wednesday, September 10, 2008 : 1915 Hrs
Sci. & Tech.
Putting a 'Korset' on the spread of computer viruses

Anti-virus companies play a losing game. Casting their nets wide, they catch
common, malicious viruses and worms (known to the industry as "malware"), but
it may take days before their software updates can prepare your computer for
the next attack. By then it could be too late. And some insidious programs
prove immune to anti-virus software, residing inside your computer for months
or even years, collecting personal information and business secrets.

But Prof. Avishai Wool and his graduate student Ohad Ben-Cohen of Tel Aviv
University's Faculty of Engineering are taking a different approach. They
recently
unveiled a unique new program called the "Korset" to stop malware on Linux, the
operating system used by the majority of web and email servers worldwide.
Prof. Wool's technology puts a new spin on Internet security, and once it
reaches its full potential it could put anti-virus software companies out of
business. The research was presented at the Black Hat Internet security
conference in Las Vegas this summer.

Stopping the Virus Before It Starts

Prof. Wool and Ben-Cohen have built an open-source software solution for
servers that run on Linux. "We modified the kernel in the system's operating
system
so that it monitors and tracks the behavior of the programs installed on it,"
says Prof. Wool. Essentially, he says, they have built a model that predicts
how software running on a server should work.

If the kernel senses abnormal activity, it stops the program from working
before malicious actions occur. "When we see a deviation, we know for sure
there's
something bad going on," Prof. Wool explains.

Prof. Wool also cites the problems with costly anti-virus protection. "Our
methods are much more efficient and don't chew up the computer's resources,"
he says. He adds that his motive is to make the Internet a safer place, not to
open a new company to compete with current anti-virus software manufacturers.

Generally speaking, says Prof. Wool, anti-virus companies catch viruses "in the
wild" and then send them to isolated computer labs for study. The companies
then determine the unique patterns or "signatures" the malware creates. It is
this signature that is sent as an anti-virus update to anti-virus subscribers.
The problem is that updates take too much time to perfect and then distribute,
leaving a wide window of opportunity for computer villains to attack.

"There is an ongoing battle between computer security experts and the
phenomenal growth of viruses and network worms flooding the Internet," he
continues.
"The fundamental problem with viruses remains unsolved and is getting worse
every day."

The Expert's Tips on Secure Habits

Even if end-users do everything they can to protect their computers by using
anti-virus programs and firewalls, there will always be a period when your
computer is vulnerable to attack, says Prof. Wool.

How to stay protected? Never click on links purporting to be from PayPal, your
bank or credit card company, he warns. "Most legitimate companies like banks
never ask their clients to click on links in an email," he says. "Be suspicious
if a company asks you to do this -- access your account through bookmarks
you've set up, or directly through the company's homepage."

Securing New Frontiers

Prof. Wool has built a number of useful technologies applicable to both today's
and tomorrow's networked world. With his graduate student Danny Nebenzahl,
he created a "vaccine" that can protect specific software programs like
Microsoft's Outlook against unseen attacks. The basic research published in 2006
is now making its way into mainstream products.

Prof. Wool is also collaborating with Prof. Jacob Scheuer, investigating the
use of fiber optics and lasers to strengthen cryptographic tools used in banking
and Internet security.

Re: [AI] Google ad frames and Jaws

2008-09-10 Thread Kiran Kaja
Inline frames or the HTML element is more commonly used to embed a
separate HTML document inside an existing HTML document while the
traditional frame element is used to logically differentiate the content of
the current document. The iframe was originally intended to display content
from other websites/webpages in the current page. This is what happens with
google adds right now.

However, the additional features or attributes offered by iframe makes it
very convenient for website owners to extend the capabilities of traditional
frames. Also iframes are more convenient for cross-browser compatibility.
So, you see more and more iframes in websites with even simple interactivity
such as message boards.

Regards,
Kiran.

Re: [AI] Hindi version of JAWS, What is the input method?

2008-09-10 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Excuse me! How can you say that the Windows method of writing Hindi language
is not popular and difficult to learn? I never learnt Hindi type writing and
I'm always comfortable with Windows keyboard. Please note, it is a matter of

Hello Amiyo,

what I want to know is out of two methods for typing Hindi, which method
is followed by jaws? Is it the default method of Microsoft which is not
popular and extremely difficult to learn or is it the keyboard layout
of Hindi type writers which is relatively simple and used by most Hindi
typists?
In case of safa, users have the option of selecting the keyboard layout
of their choice. Do we have same facility in jaws?

Hello,

Typing in any Indian language is difficult. I learn and forget Bengali
typing. Moreover, when I am typing Bengali in ms word, I can jaws unicode
feature to detect Bengali character. But it often makes of mess of spaces
and formatting etc. When I am typing Bengali in iLeap, Jaws unicode feature
does not detect it. Perhaps iLeap is not built for it. Anyway, once jaws
with Hindi is available, I hope, the Bengali version of jaws will come up
soon. It will have prospective users in India and Bangladesh.

Best regards,

Amiyo.

Re: [AI] Nokia 5320 XpressMusic

This model has something called "voice play" feature. You can apparently
speak the artist or the title of the song and it will play it if the track
exists. I wonder how well this works though...

No need to change your service provider. Just use timelines provided by
them. And yes, just check your account usage before paying anything
since
they have reputation of giving bills like anything.

[AI] BitTorrent Protocol

2008-09-10 Thread Tech Dose of the Day
BitTorrent Protocol
Dosed by Swapna K M – M & E Team (from MphasiS Software Services)
What is a BitTorrent Protocol?
BitTorrent technology has revolutionized how data is shared over the Internet.
It is an open source peer-to-peer file sharing communications protocol used to
share data online between users/peers. The BitTorrent protocol is a cost
effective way to share information across the Internet. One example of
implementation of this technology is how gaming companies use this technology
to upload game updates to all of their consumers. The basic concept of the
BitTorrent protocol is to download various pieces of the desired file from
different peers, as well as simultaneously uploading the downloaded pieces of
the file.
The idea behind BitTorrent is to allow massive distribution of files without
penalizing the source by soaring bandwidth costs and possible crashes due to
demand that exceeds the capability of the server.
Pieces of a same file are downloaded from different peers. However, compared to
other peer-to-peers, BitTorrent does not include a search engine.
There are some terms that need to be understood when talking about BitTorrent
Protocol:
1. Torrent — This is a meta data file that contains what files that are
intended to be downloaded, as well as the trackers IP address.
2. Tracker — Think of tracker as BitTorrent Server. The client contacts the
tracker, and the tracker connects the client to various peers or seeds.
3. Seed — it is a kind of BitTorrent peer. Seeds are peers that have complete
file(s) on their hard drive.
4. Leecher — A kind of BitTorrent peer. Leechers are peers that are downloading
from seeds or a swarm, but are allowing their data to be uploaded.
5. Swarm — A collection of peers that are downloading and uploading at the same
time.
6. Distributed Hash Table (DHT) — Think of DHT technology as a multi-computer
tracker with error checking.
A popular BitTorrent client is uTorrent. uTorrent uses the DHT technology, as
well as allowing the data that is being downloaded and uploaded to be encrypted.
How does it work?
To understand how BitTorrent works, let’s see how a normal downloading works.
Personal computers connected to the Internet are known as clients while the
websites visited reside on Internet servers. Servers "serve up information" to
clients. If you download a file from your computer, you create a one-on-one
connection to that server that uses whatever bandwidth is necessary to serve
you the file. When you have received the entire file, the connection is
released so the server can utilize that stream of bandwidth for handling other
connections.
The problem arises when unusually high numbers of clients visit a site
simultaneously. This can cause the server to effectively run out of available
bandwidth and "crash." When this happens, clients are refused a connection.
To avoid this, BitTorrent creates a different networking scheme. It uses the
other clients who are also downloading the file to effectively act as servers
to one another, simultaneously uploading the parts of the file received to
others requesting the file. Hence, when you click on a file to download,
several connections will be made to receive "slices" of the file that combine
to create the entire file. Meanwhile, as you are downloading these "slices" you
are also uploading them to anyone else that needs the parts you are receiving.
Once the entire file is received it is considered polite to keep your client
connected to act as a seed. A seed refers to a source that has the entire file
available.
To be able to share a file, a small file named “torrent” is first created. The
“torrent” will contain metadata about the files that have to be shared as well
as data about the computer that will coordinate the distribution of the file.
Those who want to download a specific file must hence have the “torrent” file
for it and get connected to the computer responsible for the file distribution.
The computer will hence tell the other users/peers where to get the other
pieces of the file.
Is BitTorrent Legal?
The legality of BitTorrent lies in its contents. There are a number of
sharewares and freeware present that are not subject to any copyright
infringements. However, you should be careful while downloading music and video
files as these are common files that can be distributed illegally. It is quite
simple to guess which type of file is being downloaded with or without the
author’s authorization. You can check on the author’s or program distributor’s
website if it is a commercial or a free file.

Well, free hour is between 3 AM and 8 AM in Kolkata for plan 500 home
combo
which I am using. The maximum download and upload limit is 1.5 gb. One
point
may be mentioned. Perhaps the 2 mb in the advertisement is about
bandwidth
and novices like me confused it with download speed.

reason I have asked all these questions is that I have a BSNL broadband
connection for Rs 550 which, I suppose, is limited. Of late, I have been
downloading a few audio stuffs especially books which are sized on
average about 90 to 100 mb. This month, I have got a pretty hefty sum as
internet bills which almost stopped my heart! That was the reason for my
query. I also would like to know about the quality of service in
unlimited scheme. Do you all think it is good?

Subramani

Re: [AI] BSNL unlimited download

2008-09-10 Thread sandesh
Very sad to hear that. Actually, BSNL does provide free download from 2 a.m.
(not 12) to 8 a.m. to those using 500 home plan. and except for these free
hours, the data transfer in this plan is 2.5 GB, which is good enough. As
far as their service is concerned, it seems good here in Nashik.
Regards.

Re: [AI] Accessible Adobe reader

2008-09-10 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi all,

A lot depends on what kind of PDF file you have.

1. If the pdf file is an image, then you need an OCR such as Fine
Reader or Omnipage to convert them to any other format.

2. If the pdf files have text, then you need a program like a pdf
converter such as that from Abbyy or Nuance to convert them into any
other format.

ugh, bsnl. Airtel is much better than BSNL. I use bsnl and it often goes out
of kilter. when I complain for several times they come and do cack-handed
work before deserting themselves to hell. I scolded the SDO and said that I
am going to switch on to Airtel. he replied "who has stopped you?" idiot.
There is enough light for one who wants to see.

Yes, the unlimited connection is fairly good and reliable, although large
downloads will take a long time.

Re: [AI] BSNL unlimited download

2008-09-10 Thread firoz
you must be getting free down load

from night 12 midnight to morning 8 a m

if you can use those hours then my advise is to stay with the same plan

but if you have to use only in day time then only go for unlimited plan

Hai Friends:

Thanks for all those who have written into answer my question. The
reason I have asked all these questions is that I have a BSNL broadband
connection for Rs 550 which, I suppose, is limited.
