Re: [AI] inclusive planat

2010-05-07 Thread Gopalakrishnan

Please read information on Inclusive Planet basted below:

What is Inclusive Planet?
Inclusive Planet enables persons with visual and print impairment to share
accessible content with each other, build conversations around the
experience and make friends amongst the global print impaired community. It's
as simple as that. promise :)

Sharing is Caring! Even though a lot of important governmental and
non-governmental initiatives to make content accessible have been taken,
globally the amount of content which is accessible is still less than 5%!
Inclusive Planet looks at solving the problem of lack of accessible content,
by handing the power back to the community. If persons with visual and print
impairment share some of the relevant accessible content which they have
accumulated over the years and connect with other people with similar needs,
then we have a solution like no other. Then we have a solution not just to
the problem of quantity of accessible content but also an answer to specific
needs across the world. Sharing is Caring!
Inclusive Planet has been built file by file, by the members who have shared
their collection of accessible content. We started from scratch, and today
our users have shared over fifteen thousand files. From books to class
notes, journals to cooking tips, product reviews to personal stories.
Inclusive Planet is all about the small stuff, but on a really large scale.
Start contributing to the community by sharing your personal collection

Check out one of the most viewed files on Inclusive Planet .

Fulfill Requests
Inclusive Planet is all about helping each other find accessible content.
You can request for content which you had been searching for and if any of
the members already have it in their collections, they would go ahead and
fulfill your requests.

Conversations Sharing is only half the fun at Inclusive Planet; you can
start or join conversations around shared content. For example, Jose from
Brazil shares his law school research, and Lee Kyun from Korea wants to know
how to go about writing her graduation paper, then they have a conversation
around it and students worldwide can learn from their discussion.

Check out one of the recent conversations on Inclusive Planet

Friends Inclusive Planet is more fun when you have friends over, you can
check if your friends are already here or make sure you get them here.
Moreover, Inclusive Planet is also a place to make new friends. Now, if you
share your personal collections, and are also part of the conversations then
you are bound to make friends in the process!

Profile
Creating a profile on Inclusive Planet is the first step towards connecting
to everyone on Inclusive Planet. Check out the some of the profiles from the
introduction wall to get a feeler about the diversity of people present on
Inclusive Planet

in a nutshell
So now that you have an idea about what you can do on Inclusive Planet, we
also wanted to tell you that this is a live project. You become a part of a
remarkable little revolution that is trying to bring together a community
from the farthest of reaches to solve the problems related to accessible
content. This then becomes your baby and will be shaped by what you think
and believe it should be. While we will strive to provide the best platform
from a technical stand-point, YOU will be the engine that drives it.
This brings us to the end of the site tour, hope you enjoy your stay on
Inclusive Planet

Re: [AI] Facebook with Jaws! an amazing guide

2010-05-07 Thread Madhav Chandra Das
Sir,
It cannot be dowloaded as a single file.
You have to go to the separate page one-byone and copy and paste the tutorial.
I am pasting here the entire tutorial for all the Access Indians.

Facebook basic navigation with a screen reader
Facebook is navigable and it's main functions are completely
accessible with a screen reader. You just need to know what to look
for and how to interact with the Facebook layout.
Screen reader users do not need to use "mobiel" mode.
Within your Facebook page there is a lot of information which is
irrelevent, so be prepared to skip over it and find the stuff you
really want/need.
The following tips and tricks will have you interacting with Facebook
in no time.
Reading posts and status updates
When you log into Facebook, you are, by default, on your Facebook "home" page.
The page is divided into many headings. You can move through the
headings by pressing the letter H. The first heading we are concerned
with is the heading level 2 titled, "News feed".
Just above the News Feed heading are 2 possible links.
These are
1. "most recent" and
2. "top news".
Think of these 2 links as a toggle.
Activate the "most recent" link to sort the updates, which will be
listed further down the page.
This list will be sorted chronologically from most recent to oldest.
Just press the letter H to move from one post heading to the nexct.
Activate the "top news" link to view a random list showing posts by a
selection of your friends FB updates.
All Facebook posts are listed beginning with a heading containing your
friend's name, so move through these updates by pressing the letter H.
If there is a particular update or "news story", you are interested
in, you can arrow down to find out more information, make comments on
the information, indicate that you "like" the post, or view others
comments listed about the post.
Older posts
After skipping through the headings/status updates, that is to say the
Facebook posts from your friends, you will eventually loop back to the
top of your page.
You can extend the list of these Facebook "news stories" by finding
and activating the link titled "this page link older posts".
This will add more of your friend's stories to the bottom of the list
you were just viewing. This means you will have to navigate back down
to that spot in order to view them.

Tip: To quicly find the "older posts" link, you can use your links list or:
Perform a text search for the word "older".
• Press Ctrl F.
• A dialogue box will appear. Enter the word "older" and press Enter.
• Focus will move to the word/link "older posts".
• Pressing Enter will activate the "older posts" link thus adding
older posts to the current list of your Facebook friend's postings.
Commenting on, and liking Facebook posts.
Your Facebook friend news feed posts might simply be what's on their
mind, and these posts could also include links to videos, articles,
other interesting Web pages etc.
If you come across one of your Facebook friend's posts, and you want
to comment on it, arrow down to the edit "write a comment...edit".
Type your comment, Tab to the post comment button and press spacebar.
Often times, however, there will not be a "write your comment" edit
box. There will in this case simply be the word "comment". meaning
it's not a link or an edit field. If this is the case:
• move to the word "comment" directly beneath the heading associated
with that particular post.
• Arrow over to the letter O in comment, and press Enter.
• An edit box will open so press the letter E to move to the edit
field, turn forms mode on and type your comment.
• To post your comment, press Tab to move focus to the "comment
button", and press spacebar.
To view comments

Speech recognition is indeed come a long way and there is a dedicated

under controlled conditions nevertheless, there is still room for MT to

Speech recognition has indeed been making inroads into medical
transcription. There is an increasing tendency among doctors these days
to
use speech recognition software to convert speech into text and then
have
that text corrected by medical transcriptionists. Despite this being
more
cumbersome than direct transcription, they are being paid considerably
less
for this job. The fact that so-called able-bodied people also work as
medical transcriptionists has had no impact on doctors wanting to use
speech
recognition and thereby cut down their transcription costs.

Justin Philips, one of the AI members, has been directly affected by
this
trend and may have further information.

There isn't any connection with the two. Doctors in the US need
well-drafted reports for their clients which they can't draft by
themselves. Speech recognition has an impact in situations where a
person cannot use their hands to work on the keyboard. I have also heard
of folks trying to build applications where a person's voice can be used
as a unique identification in tele banking and similar kinds of IVT
based services. Tht apart, I have not heard or read speech recognition
impacting medical transcription (remember: MT is also done by able

I feel it is important for us to let the drafting team know what exactly
we require. One thing I know for certain is that they are already
considering it; our inputs would only make it more widespread and better
in terms of covering all necessary ideas/requirements without giving a
chance for an important thing or two to slip out. Kanchan, I know, has
been involved intimately with the process, why don't we put our ideas to
her and request her to take it to the drafting team?

Hi all,
I completely see eye to eye with Rajesh sir's views regarding the
formation of new committee to draft new Law for the disabled. If it's
possible, we must make sincere attempts to reach the Committee
members. We can make individual efforts but if it's possible we must
make united efforts for this very important cause.

Hi,

I second Rajesh sir's views.

Why wait for the draft to be made public and then put in efforts at

Let's try to reach the committee and it's members with views, demands,
suggestions etc. now itself. I don't know how Mr. Suhas Karnik got
this news, but if it is public to all, then take this to the media now
itself along with our recommendations. Let's write personal letters
to the persons concerned and sensitise them about the need of the
hour.

In a lighter note, we all know betting is there in IPL. It got to
Access India also!!! And most of the betting is done by the legal

In a more serious note, our learned friends have an idea about the
time frames required for amendments and inceptions of laws and hence
are giving us an idea about the practicality. As a lay man, I thought
the new law would come into force in months. Their betting has made
me think more realistically. Thank you.

I've been encountering a strange problem in internet explorer 7.
Whenever I press f4 and click on the gmail.com, the following web site

This happens only when I first open IE after starting the computer.

I never visited that site. I even tried deleting the browsing history
but still the problem persists.

I wonder if it is because of any virus.

Guidance required.

Try following steps may help
1. Scan your computer for virus, spyware, torjans using free Avira
antivirus, free Avast antivirus.
2. Regularly use ccleaner program to clean IE browser cache, temp files etc
3. see if your RAM memory is faulty.

I think mostly step 1 & 2 will solve your problem

Speech recognition has indeed been making inroads into medical

to
use speech recognition software to convert speech into text and then
have
that text corrected by medical transcriptionists. Despite this being
more
cumbersome than direct transcription, they are being paid considerably

There isn't any connection with the two. Doctors in the US need
well-drafted reports for their clients which they can't draft by

person cannot use their hands to work on the keyboard. I have also heard

Whose spectrum is it any way?
The auction of Indian 3G spectrum is expected to wind down this week,
giving way, to the auction of ( non cellular) broadband wireless
access spectrum. "Wind down" may be the wrong phrase to use in a
scenario where the upward spiral of galloping bids has reached dizzy
levels - over Rs 1000 crores for each of the major metros --that is
ten billion rupees or approximately US$ 200 million - and all-India
licences are going for ten times this amount.
The Telecom Minister appears in the print media, every other day and his
main contribution , one may be forgiven for concluding, is to provide a
breathless update to the projected final total revenue of all bids: He
has been regularly improving' his estimates and has been quoted by
some of the business newspapers, hazarding a guess that the 3G licenses
alone could end up topping 50,000 crores or 500 billion rupees .
That's a lot of moolah for the sarkar's piggy bank - and the beauty is,
government has had to do almost nothing to create this lucrative milch
cow: it is an intangible asset created by the Internet Age we live
in... an opportunistic windfall for the government which happens to be
in power, in the right place, at the right moment.
One can therefore empathise with its determination to realise such huge
revenues in short order, by a process that should be perceived to be
fair and uncontroversial. But does government's duty end with its role
as an efficient, gavel-wielding auctioneer? Or has it a larger
obligation to ensure that the technology and infrastructure that will
hopefully become available, by unfettering all this bandwidth, meets its
own often-stated goals for its citizens?
There seems to be a clear and present danger that government has not
quite applied its mind to the unravelling the complexities that might
well result from the technological free-for-all, the
up-for-the-highest-bidder processes that it has set in motion - and one
is thinking here, of the imminent auction of Broadband Wireless Access
(BWA) spectrum rather than of the 3G auction where the technology is
pretty well defined.
By not laying down a clear technology path for BWA, government seems to
be showing a touching faith in the bidding parties : that they will
deploy technology that will make commercial sense and will also be in
the larger interests of Indian customers. Is such faith warranted in a
hardboiled business environment, where large global players with
goals, sometimes inseparable from the national interests of their home
countries, vie for a share of the Indian broadband pie?
Telecom technology today, is a game of rapidly shifting goal-posts,
wherethe late media guru Marshall McLuhan's famous words seem so
prescient: 'If it works, it's obsolete'. Can we be quite sure that the
world's last big telecom opportunity that India represents, is not used
( or misused) as a testing ground for new, tentative or unproven
technologies, before they are considered for more mature markets? Is
there a price we may have to pay - later -- for the intellectual
property regime of a particular technology, that may turn out to be less
benign that we had imagined? When one commands as big a market as
India does, it gives one a lot of leverage to gently persuade successful
bidders into dovetailing one's national goals with their own
techno-commercial aspirations.
And what about security? The Finance Minister admitted in Parliament
last week, during the debate on telephone tapping, that our expertise
in electronic security and surveillance is way behind some other
nations, whom he didn't name. All the more reason, for putting
national security at the top of the list, of considerations that should
outweigh the purely commercial, when the winners are declared this
month, in India's auction of wireless spectrum.
It's great that so much money will be available, for the public good in
coming months. But let's remind ourselves of where exactly that good
lies, for the billion-plus Indians in whose name this massive national
asset is being sold.

If any of the members is accessible and willing to listen, she/he may take
up the wider concerns and have them incorporated in the law.
I believe at least one committee member is also a member in this list.
So, what is the harm in adopting the strategy.
Committees should not function in ivory towers or vacuum.

Instead of committee proceedings being a closed secret, I think as citizens

have our points reach the committee members

Anyway, the process has begun, and high hopes were pinned on a brand new

We need to ask ourselves one question: do we mean "best team" by virtue
of someone being a disabled person or do we want someone with lots of

charity model to the rights model as a way of harmonising Indian
disability law with the UN Convention. So why so much doubt. If the
process is wrong or if the team makes mistakes, let us indicate it to
them and try and see our side of things. We will be better placed in
making this team see our way than the minister who showed absolute lack
of leadership by dilly-dallying on the amendment Vs replacement issue.

It is really exciting that a brand new law is to be drafted. I am not
however sure if they have got the best team on board to draft the bill.
I
am not sure if this law will dramatically depart from charity to an
inclusive one.

exactly so. Anyway, if a student has good marks, he can apply.

A student from Chhatrishgarh called me asking for details about his state. Can
anybody say which department is responsible for such scholarship in
Chhatrishgarh? It's department of Mass Education in West Bengal. The fellow who
called me is a member on our list. So, he will definitely notice your reply.

I think she means what she says. I know since I have been following what
the team is doing as a journalist. Someone has to take the lead even if
they don't necessarily go with the majority opinion. We may keep
debating things till the kingdom comes, but remember someone has to keep
that precarious first step even if that means a nasty fall.

Twitter is a very straight forward micro blogging site. You just have to
log on and keep tweeting (the way the twitterate calls each posting they
do). One good feature they have is what is called re-twete. When you
