2010-10-28 Thread akhilesh
I think JNU is very safe place in delhi.
however, you should also consider the delhi university too. colleges
don't matter a lot as far as university of delhi is concern because
you get registered in college but you have to do all the classes in
Faculty of arts. so select any good college in north campus that would
be very near to your hostel. Delhi university is very very safe place
as far as female students and specially visually challenged students
are concern.
you will also get the hostel in north campus.

Bye for now,
Akhilesh.

[AI] query regarding net banking of SBI (mukesh jain)

2010-10-28 Thread Vicky Singh
Dear Mukeshji,

I am an active user of SBI online website.

In order to download the bank statement I, follow all the steps
mentioned by you. On pressing submit button the bank statement opens
in a new window. This window is basically an excel spreadsheet. I
click anywhere on this sheet and press 'Ctrl+A" shortcut for selecting
all the content on the page. Next I press "Ctrl+C" for copying the
entire page to clip board. Then I open a blank excel workbook and go
to "A1" cell and press "Ctrl+V" for pasting the content to excel
worksheet. All the entries are pasted in excel file and then I save it
as per my requirement and prefered location.

SBI online allows only 6 month data download.

I hope that will help.
Please feel free to write back in case problem is not resolved.

Method indicated above is an indirect one. I would request list
members to indicate if any direct method is available.

Regards,

VS

Re: [AI] Mutual Funds/Bonds

2010-10-28 Thread Pamnani
Yes Niranjan generally the Bonds are cancelled but this does not happen in
every case. National Highway Authority of India did not cancel the bonds and
these had to be returned at the time of redemption. They were not satisfied
with the attestation from the Bank.

A similar problem is being faced by one visually challenged friend regarding
his mutual funds.

If I have to get SEBI to look at the problem as a whole then I need others
to tell me about their problems.

Dear Madam,
Namasthee. I think that now the practice is, on maturity the bond
certificate gets automatically cancelled and the money is either
credited to the investor's account by ECS or is sent to him by cheque.
This was my experience in respect of both IDBI bonds and ICICI bonds.
Further, when I had to send an application for change of adress, as a
measure of abundant precaution, I got my signature counter signed by
the branch manager of my bank.
Hope the above can be one of the options for VI persons.

Hello,
This is the query regarding accessibility of the site

In this regard, this is to kindly inform you that I am using net

difficulty in accessing the download account statement.

As per the option available to download the account statement, there
are three radio buttons, view, download in excel format and download
in pdf format. While choosing the option download in pdf format the
account statement appears on the screen and perfectly accessible to
read but when I try to explore the save option to save this in my

While enquiring with sighted person, I have been told that there is
one link on this page which says "click here to save this file or to
choose desired location" but I am unable to go to this link with my
screen reader jaws.

So if anyone on the list using the net banking of SBI and know the
solution for my problem, please give your valuable suggestions.

Your kind cooperation in this regard would be highly obliged.

Re: [AI] Mutual Funds/Bonds

2010-10-28 Thread Devdas Nayak

Hi,

Opting for the payment of the redemption proceeds through ECS can be a
good option to over come the signature variation problem.
The registrars usually process such redemption requests despite of
signature mismatch.
Atleast this is my personal experience.

Re: [AI] query regarding net banking of SBI

2010-10-28 Thread mukesh jain
hello,
first of all, thank you very much for your kind reply.

i have followed the steps given by you and could download the
statement in excel format. but i would like to know that what if i
want to download the statement in pdf format? since there is the link
given to download the file is there any way
to reach to the said link with screen reader?

i have one more doubt regarding online SBI website. till now i have
been accessing this site with internet explorer but now since i have
installed mazilla firefox i tried to access this site
onlinesbi.com
through firefox and the home page of this site got opened fine. on
this page, i have clicked on the link personal banking to access the
acount. after opening this page, i could not get the fields like user
name and password.

actually, when i click on personal banking with internet explorer i
get the page on which there are links in graphics so i press g to go
to the link continue to log in and press enter. then i get the page to
type user name and password. but with firefox i neither get this
graphic link nor get the user name and password to type. rather on
this page, i get the following message:

Beware of Phishing attacks

list of 3 items
• Phishing is a fraudulent attempt, usually made through email, phone
calls, SMS etc seeking your personal and confidential information.
• State Bank never sends e-mail and embedded links asking you to
update or verify confidential, personal and security details. If you
receive such e-mails/phone
calls/SMS NEVER RESPOND to them and report such matter to the bank at
• More security tips
list end

so how do i get on to user name and password page with firefox?

your kind cooperation in this regard would be highly obliged.

[AI] my website is back!

2010-10-28 Thread prateek aggarwal
hi everyone,
I think most of you are aware now that i own a website called
prateekagarwal.webs.com
which intends to provide information about various stuff to blind and
visually impaired people.

As I wrote in past, the xxx.webs.com has been blocked in India, and
bombay high court has banned their port address for Indian users.
This is the reason that you were not able to see the website.
The ban on the webs.com IP address and port has not been lifted yet,
neither there seems any possibility of the same in near time.

Wondrously, I’ve been receiving a large number of e-mails over the
months since it has stopped working, and seriously, I had no idea that
the website is such a hit amongst you folks.

a lot of people have been constantly sending e-mails and inquiring
about why and how the website has been suspended.

I’m so very much grateful to everyone who care about the website and
made me realized that my diminutive attempt of helping fellows in
community is working somewhat.

Thanks all for your write-ups during the period, i'm really
overwhelmed by your response and support.

Considering your large number of e-mails and telephone calls, I’ve
decided to revive the website for you all.

please note, that While the webs.com address is not working, you
will find my website on a new location now.
Kindly notedown the new address for my website carefully:

www.prateekagarwal.tk

please update your list of favorites, book marks and whatever else
where you have my website's address stored.
the new address is:

www.prateekagarwal.tk

it’s the same website, with same variety of stuff including articles
pertaining to blind people, information about laws for blind and
visually impaired people, various government circulars, orders and
guidelines which are of favor to blind and visually impaired persons,
life skill tips, online lectures, career information, ebooks, audio
books, computer tricks, tips and tutorials, software reviews, useful
links, material for competitive exams, fun stuff, news, views, and
just a whole lot.

I reiterate, the new address for accessing this website is
www.prateekagarwal.tk

I know, I should have done it long back, but unfortunately, I’ve been
extremely busy during days, with traveling, works, this, that and
more.
My deep apologies for any inconvenience caused by this delay.

Hope you should be able to enjoy the services of this website
uninterruptedly now.

Please forward it to as many folks as you can to let everyone know
about the new address of the website.

If you have something to say or ask, or find any technical problem,
error or bug, please write me on
prateekagarwa...@gmail.com

I will look forward for hearing from you.

With profound regards,

[AI] People who are blind perceive touch faster than those with normal vision

2010-10-28 Thread Vikas Kapoor
People who are blind perceive touch faster than those with normal vision
Published: Wednesday, Oct 27, 2010, 15:45 IST
Place: Washington, DC | Agency: ANI
A new study suggests that people who are blind from birth are able to detect
tactile information faster than people with normal vision.

A group of researchers led by Daniel Goldreich, PhD, of McMaster University
explored whether people who have a special reliance on a particular sense - in
the way blind people rely on touch - would process that sense faster.

"Our findings reveal that one way the brain adapts to the absence of vision is
to accelerate the sense of touch," Goldreich said.

"The ability to quickly process non-visual information probably enhances the
quality of life of blind individuals who rely to an extraordinary degree on the
non-visual senses," he said.

The authors tested the tactile skills of 89 people with sight and 57 people
with various levels of vision loss.

And they found that 22 people who had been blind since birth performed better
than both people with vision and people who had become blind later in life.

The findings suggest that early onset blindness leads to faster perception of
touch. However, whether that advantage is due to the brain adapting to the
absence of vision - a change called plasticity - or to a lifetime of practicing
Braille is still unclear.

The study was published in the October 27 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience.

Re: [AI] People who are blind perceive touch faster than those withnormal vision

2010-10-28 Thread Shadab Husain
I could not find anything remarkable in this study. Anyone remotely familiar
with blinds knows that they have a "faster perception of touch". The
question that whether this skill is "due to the brain adapting to the
absence of vision - a change called plasticity - or to a lifetime of
practicing Braille" would have been easily answered by conducting a similar
test on those blinds who don't know braille and those who know it; but they
have mentioned it as if it is going to be a Herculean task. Shadab

Subject: [AI] my website is back!

hi everyone,
I think most of you are aware now that i own a website called
prateekagarwal.webs.com
which intends to provide information about various stuff to blind and
visually impaired people.

With profound regards,
Prateek agarwal

Re: [AI] Mutual Funds/Bonds

2010-10-28 Thread Geetha Shamanna
I had a tough time redeeming my mutual funds last year. My redemption form
was returned twice by Franklin because the signature did not match. They
further wanted me to get my signature attested from the branch manager of
the bank to which I wanted the refund to be credited to. It was very painful
and I would have given up, had the amount not been substantial. Reliance, on
the other hand, was more accommodative and accepted my signature once I
explained the reason for the mismatch.

I however had no problem with IDBI bonds. They credited the amount directly
to my account on maturity.

[AI] tips required for using gps

2010-10-28 Thread bhavesh
HI friends! hope you are doing well. in my last mail, i asked you about nokia
c5 and nokia e63, and i finally have perchased nokia c5.

i tell you what! it is worth perchasing. the only thing is, that it does not
have Wlam support. but, the other features, such as internal gps are very very
useful.

i have started using loadstone, a satalite navigation software (open source)
for gps.

i would encourage all of you, who can afford to pay at least RS 8000 to
perchase this phone, please start using this software. you will be surprised by
it's accuracy.

finally, i request all the gps experienced users to give me some tips.

as per my experience, it alerts you much before your check point.

please tell me how to make it more accurate.

besides this, any more tips will be grately appriciated.

Hi,
In the field of creative writing and translation there is no
difference among blind and sighted person.
If you are good in this work you can deffinatly get proper job and recognition.
I think first of all you should contact add agencies, NGOs, production
houses and other this kind of media.
It is easy to find their phone numbers from just dile and this kind of
other services.
But remember don’t get upset, this kind of profession demands a great struggle.
I am sure in the beginning many people will discourage you. But if
somebody will recognize your work than you will not have time for
yourself.
All the best.
Thanks.

Re: [AI] (no subject)

2010-10-28 Thread Amit Bhatt

Hi,

Although some untoward incidences take place on some occasion also in Delhi,
however, I would not say that Capital of India is not safe for Visually
Impaired women or even for any citizen for that matter.
If you really like to do studies in Delhi, there is no point of getting
worried about safety and security here. There are many Visually Challenged
girls studding in DU and JNU.
Hindu college also known as one of the best colleges for Political Science
in Delhi university. I also done Political Science HONS from this institute.
Undoubtedly, JNU is also counted amongst the very reputed and nice
universities.

Amit Bhat

I think JNU is very safe place in delhi.
however, you should also consider the delhi university too. colleges
don't matter a lot as far as university of delhi is concern because
you get registered in college but you have to do all the classes in
Faculty of arts. so select any good college in north campus that would
be very near to your hostel. Delhi university is very very safe place
as far as female students and specially visually challenged students
are concern.
you will also get the hostel in north campus.

Bye for now,
Akhilesh.

[AI] ROCKET ON FAKE DISABILITY CERTIFICATES IN KARNATAKA STATE

2010-10-28 Thread kodakkal shivaprasad
BANGALORE: Divya (name changed) claimed she was speech and hearing impaired,
and even had a certificate to prove it. But when a Lokayukta health
investigator whispered in her ear, "What's your name?", she responded
immediately: "Divya". Don't be shocked. For, Divya is just one among many
perfectly normal people who have got themselves a certificate attesting to
their disability.

All they did was pay touts any amount between Rs 3,000 and Rs 5,000. The
benefits are many: a monthly allowance of around Rs 1000, a bus/train pass,
employment, identity card or even a telephone booth! Genuine certificates are
issued free of cost by authorised hospitals.

Lokayukta investigators have unearthed a racket in which touts will help you
get these certificates. Two NGOs dealing with disability, Angala Vikalara
Jagruti Maha Samiti and Pragati Anga Vikalara Shema Abhivruddhi Sangha, lodged
complaints with the Lokayukta office about discrepancies in issuing disability
certificates. Subsequently, Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde entrusted doctors
of Health Foundation to investigate.

Investigators found material which indicated there was prima facie truth in the
allegations and there're gross discrepancies while issuing certificates. Their
complete report will be submitted to Justice Hegde soon.

While there were discrepancies in certificates issued by several hospitals in
the city, the disability board of a government hospital is particularly
notorious for violating guidelines. When Lokayukta investigators visited the
board, instead of three experts who would issue certificates as stipulated in
central government guidelines, five doctors of different specialialites were
examining people. These experts were paid Rs 800 per visit and they were not
government employees but private practitioners.

Lokayukta investigators — Dr C S Hanumanthappa, Dr R Chandrasekhara, Dr K
Srinivasa Murthy and Dr K R Kamath — raided the board and after finding many
discrepancies, summoned around 40 people who had been issued disability
certifica-tes. "Only 26 of them turned up. Instead of regular doctors, we
called doctors from Bowring Hospital and Victoria Hospital.

Many cases were found faulty. The institute is supposed to rehabilitate
disabled persons by issuing them aids like Jaipur Foot or hearing aids and
training them but none of it was done. They were only issuing certificates,"
Lokayukta investigators, who were part of the raid, told TOI.

It's not surprising that just after the raid, the board wound up operations in
a mysterious manner and said it was no longer authorised to issue certificates.
Equipment and aids worth crores are lying unused in that defunct building.

Re: [AI] Mutual Funds/Bonds

2010-10-28 Thread Sandeep Gautam

Madam,
Though I have done redemption of one mutual fund of Aditya Birla group.
Though the reason could be that I can sign the documents.
But, one thing I want to mention that when a visuallly impaired buy a mutual
fund, lic policy etc. why it is not written in the bond document that
investor is a visually impaired?
I presume that If it is written clearly in the bond document of investment
that the investor or holder is a visually impaired, it can save us from many
future problems.

When the Visually impaired apply for Mutual Funds or Bonds there does not
seem to be any problem however when the btime for redemption comes the
problems start. The complaints of thumb impression, signature not
tallying etc are the general excuses. The problem is sorted out when the
visually impaired gives an affidavit and notarises his redemption
application.

this is the problem that I have received recently from some visually

1. Have any of you suffered such a problem?
2. How was it sorted out
3. Did it take very long
4. How much extra did you spend
5. What is the procedure when you applied for these Bonds or units.
6. Do you have your Mutual funds in demat or physical form?
7. Is there any related problem which you want me to tackle now.

Subject: [AI] query regarding net banking of SBI

Hello,
This is the query regarding accessibility of the site
Onlinesbi.com
In this regard, this is to kindly inform you that I am using net
banking facility of SBIon their site given aforesaid, and finding
difficulty in accessing the download account statement.

As per the option available to download the account statement, there
are three radio buttons, view, download in excel format and download
in pdf format. While choosing the option download in pdf format the
account statement appears on the screen and perfectly accessible to
read but when I try to explore the save option to save this in my
desired location, I am unable to get any menu where I can have the
option to save this statement.

[AI] RTI LOGO AND PORTAL LAUNCHED

2010-10-28 Thread BHAWANI SHANKAR VERMA
PrintPress Information Bureau
Government of India
Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions

28-October-2010 20:33 IST RTI Logo & Portal Launched

The Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions
Shri Prithviraj Chavan launched the Logo on RTI and the RTI portal today in the
presence of Shri. A N. Tiwari, Chief Information Commission and Shri. Shantanu
Consul, Secretary, DoPT.

It is a simple and iconic logo depicting a sheet of paper with information on
it, and the public authority - providing the information. This represents
people's empowerment through transfer and accountability in Governance. The
logo's shape and structure make it easy to remember, recall and replicate with
minimal distortion.
In the last five years the RTI regime has heralded a regime of transparency and
accountability and strengthened the democratic structure of the country.
Success stories of citizens using the RTI Act abound. The Act has achieved
great success in empowering the citizens of India. However it was felt that the
core values of the RTI regime - Empowerment, Transparency and Accountability-
need to be given a shape in the form of a logo. The logo would be displayed at
all public authorities and will be used in various communications related to
RTI.
The Right to Information Portal - A Gateway on RTI - was also formally launched
on this occasion. The portal is one stop knowledge bank for information
seekers, information providers, trainers, Information Commissions, students and
academicians. It provides for a digital library, discussion fora, e-
newsletter and a blog. Latest judgments of the High Courts and Information
Commissions; reports, articles, guides, manuals, handbooks for various
stakeholders; online certificate course are also available on this portal.
There is facility for stakeholders to interact through dedicated and open
discussion forum and register as resource persons. The web URL for the Portal is
 www.rtigateway.org.in.

Re: [AI] Mutual Funds/Bonds

2010-10-28 Thread Rajdeep Manwani

Dear All
I generally face a problem in redeeming my mutual fund units.
Reliance, HDFC, DSp Blackrock and ICICI in particular have refused my
redemption requests at least two times sighting a signature mismatch.
If the redemption request is attested by the bank where i have my account
they redeem my units.
I must state that the banks charge a fee for attestation, which is generally
Rs 100 per attestation.
If there are multiple folios in the same mutual fund or if i have invested
at different time periods in different folio numbers then i have to pay
attestation charges for every folio i redeem which proves very costly.
I think the matter must be taken up with SEBI as it is not only expensive
but also time consuming and the whole process takes two or three weeks which
results in the change in the mutual fund unit value and a difference in the
perceived amount which i expect to get from the redemption and the actual
amount i get because of the change in the stock market conditions.

But, one thing I want to mention that when a visuallly impaired buy a

I presume that If it is written clearly in the bond document of investment

When the Visually impaired apply for Mutual Funds or Bonds there does not
seem to be any problem however when the btime for redemption comes the
problems start. The complaints of thumb impression, signature not
tallying etc are the general excuses. The problem is sorted out when the
visually impaired gives an affidavit and notarises his redemption
application.

this is the problem that I have received recently from some visually

1. Have any of you suffered such a problem?
2. How was it sorted out
3. Did it take very long
4. How much extra did you spend
5. What is the procedure when you applied for these Bonds or units.
6. Do you have your Mutual funds in demat or physical form?

[AI] Print Files From Anywhere via Any Device With Dropbox

2010-10-28 Thread Waseem
Hello all,

Have you ever wanted to print something from your iPhone, or needed to print
something on your office printer from your netbook at home? Here's how you can
make Dropbox into a quasi virtual print server.

Syncing files between your own computers or sharing them halfway around the
world is simple and quick with Dropbox. The only problem is, these files are
digital. Even today, sometimes we all need printouts of our documents on
paper. Most of us are not near a printer all the time, and often today we're
using documents on mobile devices that can't even print normally. Dropbox,
amazingly, can be a solution to this. Thanks to a free VBS scrip, you can set
your computer to automatically print any file you place in a certain folder in
Dropbox. This way, you can save a file to this folder from your smartphone,
and get the printout within seconds from your desktop. Let's see how this
works.

Setup Automatic Printing From Dropbox
download and unzip the ePrint.vbs script (Link below). Double-click the
eprint.vbs script to run it. This will automatically create a new PrintQueue
folder in your Dropbox. Now, when you want to print something using your
default printer and default print settings, simply copy and paste the file into
the PrintQueue folder. Note that if you simply drag and drop a file to the
folder, it will move the file by default; simply hold the Ctrl key at the same
time, though, and it'll copy the file instead. That's it! Your file will
automatically open in the default program and print. Once your file's printed,
it'll be moved from PrintQueue to the log subfolder. This way, if you ever
accidently move a file into the folder, you'll still be able to retrieve it.
This PrintQueue folder will show up on any computer or mobile device you sync
with Dropbox, but will only print from the computer running the vbs script.
So, you'll want this script to always run on your primary computer. Simply
drag the eprint.vbs file to your Startup folder, and then it'll always be ready
to print your files whenever your computer is running.

Printing Directly From a Program
Now, no matter what computer you're on, it'll be easy to print from your
primary computer. There's just one thing to remember: Never save your main
files in the PrintQueue folder. Always save your files first to the folder you
want to keep them in. Then feel free to press Save as and push another copy to
your print folder, and it'll automatically print, no matter where you are.

Printing From Your Mobile Device
Once you have printing setup on your main computer, it's easy to print files
from any mobile device, too. There are a number of apps for all the popular
mobile platforms that integrated with Dropbox, so check out the link below to
find apps for your device. Now just write or paste any text you need to print,
save it to that folder, and you'll have your paper copy ready in seconds.
There are also many apps that can directly access your Dropbox, so you can copy
existing files to your PrintQueue folder as well. Alternately, you can email
files to your Dropbox, and then later move them to the print folder. This is
not a perfect solution, but if your app doesn't integrate with Dropbox, it may
be the only way you can get it there. Browse to Habilis (link below), and
click Connect to Dropbox to setup the email service. Login to your Dropbox,
then click Allow. Seconds later, you should see a notification from Dropbox
that Habilis has been linked to your account. Now, go back to Habilis's site,
and you'll get a unique email address for Habilis. Anything files you email to
this address will be added to a /From Habilis folder in your Dropbox, and then
you can move it to the print folder later from another app, your browser, or a
full computer. We never cease to be amazed at how useful Dropbox can be. From
syncing portable apps between computers to the ways you can make use of Dropbox
are only limited by your imagination. It's actually cut down on the amount of
pages we print out, but if you still need your files on dead trees, this is a
great way to do it from anywhere, anytime.

[AI] Freedom Scientific Releases JAWS 12

2010-10-28 Thread Waseem
Freedom Scientific Releases JAWS 12
First Windows® Screen Reader Supporting Contracted Braille Input
(St. Petersburg, Florida - October 25, 2010) - Freedom Scientific today
announced the release of JAWS® for Windows version 12, including JAWS
BrailleInT, a powerful new feature that enables users who prefer typing in
Braille to use contracted Braille in common Microsoft applications such as
Internet Explorer and Word. JAWS 12 includes a new Virtual Ribbon feature which
provides a fast way to navigate the Ribbon Menus that Microsoft uses in Office
2007 and Windows 7. JAWS 12 also replaces the Configuration Manager with a new
Settings Center. The Settings Center allows easy access to all JAWS settings
and includes a search box to instantly locate and adjust the desired settings.

"This release represents a huge step in productivity for Braille users," says
Eric Damery, Vice President of Software Product Management for Freedom
Scientific. "Many expert Braille readers are much faster and more accurate
typing on a Perkins-style keyboard than on a QWERTY keyboard, and they will be
more efficient using JAWS 12 with applications like Word, Outlook, Internet
Explorer, Notepad, and WordPad. The BrailleIn feature instantly back translates
the Braille input, displaying text on the PC screen, so parents and teachers
can follow along as their students type in Braille. The new Virtual Ribbon Menu
has also been very well received by our customers during the beta phase of this
release and will greatly reduce the learning curve for users upgrading to new
versions of Office and Windows 7."

The upgrade is an SMA release and can be downloaded as either 32-bit or 64-bit
versions. DVD shipments to SMA holders and new product customers will commence
on Nov. 2, 2010.
