i think it is very difficuld to prove, because it is not rezurve ticket.

however one can try with consumer court.

Re: [AI] Braille keyboard, computer games

2011-04-01 Thread balaji j
Hi

There is always a debate in whether one can use Braille Keyboard or the regular
QWERTY keyboard.

When you talk about inclusion then one should go for qwerty keyboard which on
practice one can acquire the skills in a short span of time and in the long run
it helps you.

For senior citizens and persons with other motoric problems where it is
difficult to explore and reach out all the keys then one can think of other
keyboard supplements which is easily connected to desktops or laptops with USB
connection.

There is no harm in trying it out.

With Due respect to Braille -Braille keyboard is good for those who are in
practice of Braillers but what I think or most would agree, the general
keyboard typing is the best and most accepted method. Additionally, the
Braille keyboard require to press multiple keys to type a character where
the other one require 1 key per character, so for a child the energy loss
 is
 also less with general keyboard.

Actually my son uses the computer, but knows the key by position from left
end or right end, will teach him touch typing, in a couple of years,

Was just wondering if giving him a Braille keyboard would help him do it
faster, in addition to generating interest in Braille in a known domain.
Please give me your opinion on this.

There is a software called typing tutor or something like that which
others will refer you to, I have this on my computer but havent used it
much. it uses the same concept.
Although I would tell you that your son should learn to use all his
fingers correctly, I have seen several people only use one finger per hand
 and manage extremely well.
You may also think of getting one of the old time typists or typing
 schools to teach him.
One of the things I learnt was to put the carbon paper correctly. People
on this group may laugh but I still need this skill. I have secretaries
 who
dont know how to use carbon paper. Now the question -why carbon paper in
this day of ink jet and lazer printers. Just to clarify I have an ink jet
and a lazer printer in the office but I always keep a dot matrix for court
work. I need copies and more copies. It is so much more efficient.

Your son is young and his fingers will slowly settle into a rhythm.  Even
though I am a great fan of braille I dont recommend a braille key board.
As far as games are concerned I have just managed to borrow a braille
scrabble from Sam, if your son wants to play lets find some time.

Re: [AI] blackberry questions

2011-04-01 Thread Mukesh Sharma
1 is blackberry accessible?.
Ans: yes but only one model 8520
2 which screen reader does it use?
Ans: Oratio marketed by Humanware and developed by Code Factory.
3 does blackberry phone come with qwerty keyboard?
ANS: Yes, and the 8520 is a non touch QWERTY Smartphone.
4 if i get a blackberry from Singapur will it work in India?
Ans: if you get an unlocked one, it will work but if you get an locked one
with some carrier, check out gray market to get it unlocked. Charges could
be as little as 300 and as high as 3000.
5 do i go for a blackberry in turms of accessability or do i stay for
sometime away from blackberry.
Ans:Decide on your own, a few facts, RIM is in transition of their own OS as
they are doing with their new Tablet, Oratio is Device based, don't know if
you get the ability to switch device free of cost, Android is in pace to
accessibility roadmap.
Hope this is helpful.

It depends upon the version of Talks you're using. In Talks 5, there are 16
items in advance tabsheet and 3 items in the automation tabsheet. If you
experiment a bit, you can find out for yourself what you actually need.
Some of the changes I made to the default settings include:
Cursor mode words
Mute during a call never
Progress update every 3 s
Caller ID after 10 s
Repeat caller ID every 3 s

Re: [AI] large print books

2011-04-01 Thread Vamshi. G
Hi,

Honestly, I don't know the definition of large print. But you can
enlarge the print by taking xerox copy on an A3 paper. I used to do
this sometime ago when I had enough vision to read slightly larger
print.

Alternatively you can try magnifying aids so that students can use
them instead of searching for books in large print each and every
time. The cost of magnifying aids vary with their in built features.

Also do inform where are you working in Banglore so that we can direct
students with low vision to you.

Re: [AI] large print books

2011-04-01 Thread Adhimoolam Vetrivel Murugan
Hi,

Perhaps others will give you a clear answer to this question, but I
predict from your question that such large prints are intented to the
partially sighted students. If so, just a word of caussion. exposing a
partially sighted person to prints, CC TV etc for extended period of
time in some cases can cause strain on his/her vision and it make some
individuals to loose their sight. We clearly see this problem here in
the United States since there is a desperation to avoid teaching of
brail to the partially sighted persons. At least India is one of those
leaders in mandating brail for all visually challenged persons and I
hate to see that change.

Just my thoughts.

Vetri.

Re: [AI] Unable to work with Kurzweil 1000

2011-04-01 Thread Vamshi. G
Hi Moize,

I will first answer your second question. You can open .kes files in
Kurzweil and then save them in other formats like .doc or .rtf etc by
using the save as option in the file menu.

As far as your first question is concerned, I use Kurzweil with Jaws
working along side, and I don't get any problems. In any case, try
using Kurzweil by closing jaws.

[AI] Gujaraat Releases Braille Version Of R. T. I. Act

2011-04-01 Thread Dr. Yogesh Sharma
Hi friends, here is an important piece of news which I am coppying from an

Gujarat releases Braille version of RTI

Manas Dasgupta

GANDHINAGAR: A Braille version of the Right to Information Act and its rules
was released here on Thursday by the Gujarat Information Commission for the
benefit of the visually challenged.

According to Chief Information Commissioner R.N. Das, Gujarat is the first
State to bring out a Braille version. He said the Commission was also working
on bringing out an audio CD for the visually challenged and other differently
abled people to explain the Act.

A CD in sign language for the hearing impaired would also be brought out.

Mr. Das said the Commission had been getting a lot of petitions under the RTI
Act from visually challenged people, mostly connected with their livelihood.

To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in

Hi
How do I get Kurzweil 1000 working with JAWS installed on the
computer? There are some books in .kes format which I need to read
urgently. Kurzweil opens allright, but then it either slows down
drastically or fails to read anything. Is it because of JAWS running
along side? The keystrokes on the numerical pad are not working
either.
There must surely be a method which I have not yet figured out. Please
help. Also, is there a way in which .kes format books can be converted
to word?
Best,
Moiz.

An electronic travel aid for navigation of visually impaired persons.

Abstract — This paper presents an electronic travel aid for blind people to
navigate safely and quickly, an obstacle detection system using ultrasonic
sensors and USB camera based visual navigation has been considered. The proposed
system detects the obstacles up to 300 cm via sonar and sends feedback (beep
sound) to inform the person about its location. In addition to this, an USB
webcam is connected with eBox 2300 Embedded System for capturing the field of
view of the user, which is used for finding the properties of the obstacle in
particular, in the context of this work, locating a human being. Identification
of human presence is based on face detection and cloth texture analysis. The
major constraints for these algorithms to run on Embedded System are small image
frame (160x120) having reduced faces, limited memory and very less processing
time available to achieve real time image processing requirements. The
algorithms are implemented in C++ using Visual Studio 5.0 IDE, which runs on
Windows CE environment.

are there no pdf document printers such as Bulzip's or adobe's, apart
from MSWord that allow to generate accessible tagged PDFs on the fly,

I have hunted quite a bit on that but did not come across anything
apart from some hefty creation from Nuance, which turned out to be

[AI] Google may shut gmail

2011-04-01 Thread neelima kumari
Hello all,
Hope all is well.
Sorry for late. Pasting one article from timesofindia.com.

As Baidu Inc widens its lead in the world's largest Web market, a
discontinuation of the mapping service would signal Google's dimming
outlook in ChinaBEIJING: Google Inc's defiance of China's censorship
rules resulted in the world's most popular search engine being pulled
out of the country 12 months ago. This year, the dispute may be
spilling over to Gmail and maps.

As of yesterday, China's State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping hadn't
received an application from Google to keep offering its service, as
required under regulations announced in May, according to Kou Jingwei,
the bureau's spokesman. Jessica Powell, a Google spokeswoman, declined
to comment on whether the company has applied. The deadline is
tomorrow.

As Baidu Inc widens its lead in the world's largest Web market, a
discontinuation of the mapping service would signal Google's dimming
outlook in China, according to analysts, after the company blamed
local censors for disruptions in its email service. The latest clash
shows the government hasn't forgiven the Google's decision to halt
compliance with censorship rules on Internet searches, said
Christopher Tang, a professor of business administration at UCLA.

Google faces major problems within China, Tang said. Unless Google
is going to change the way they operate, unless they are willing to
apologise to the Chinese government, unless they are willing to
cooperate with the Chinese government to impose censorship according
to the wishes of the Chinese government. Otherwise, there's no deal.

Google British East India
A March 4 opinion piece in the official People's Daily, the mouthpiece
of China's Communist Party, compared Google with the British East
India Company, whose sales of opium in the country was the root of two
19th-century conflicts.

China introduced a new licensing system for Internet mapping services
in May to address illegal practices and an inadequate awareness of
national security, the official Xinhua News agency reported March 21.
Since 2008, online mapping services have committed more than 1,000
violations including unauthorised disclosure of confidential
information and mistakes in drawing the country's border, Xinhua
reported.

As of mid-February, the bureau had granted licenses to 105 websites
for mapping services, including Baidu, Sina Corp, a Nokia Oyj joint
venture and China Mobile Ltd, Xinhua said. The bureau has pledged to
close unapproved websites.

The Bureau said applications for license must be made by March 31, to
avoid administrative actions it will take by July 1. The Bureau this
month vowed resolute punishment for serious violations, such as
closing websites, Xinhua said.

License renewal
We are examining the regulations to understand their impact on our
maps products in China, Google said in a statement.

Google in July was able to renew its Internet-service license in China
through 2012, even after shuttering its Google.cn site in China and
redirecting users to a Hong Kong site. The company had said it was no
longer willing to comply with online censorship rules on topics such
as Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989 and Tibet independence.

In the latest round of friction, Google accused local censors of
disrupting its Gmail email service and disguising the blockage as
technical issues on Google's behalf. China's Foreign Ministry
spokeswoman Jiang Yu on March 22 called that claim unacceptable.

In the 17-19th centuries, the East India Company made their
contribution for the development of a British Empire where the sun
never sets through the monopoly of trade, the opium trade and openly
looting, the People's Daily piece said. Google is essentially
similar to the East India Company, but is smarter in its performance
than the East India Company. Google does not burn and loot, and they
are also good at camouflage.

Opium war
China fought the first Opium War with the British Empire in 1839-42,
and a second from 1856-1860.

Beyond Google's own history of conflict with China's censors, the
company is now also being perceived as a greater threat to the
government in light of popular unrest throughout North Africa and the
Middle East that has already brought down regimes in Tunisia and
Egypt, said James Lewis, senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and
International Studies, a Washington-based policy group.

Google's caught in some larger political issues, Lewis said. It's a
very big problem, and the events in the Middle East have made it a
little bit bigger.

Google executive Wael Ghonim helped set up a website for Egypt
opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei as anti-government protests in the
Middle Eastern country toppled President Hosni Mubarak. Ghonim's
11-day detention turned him into a hero for a disaffected Egyptian
youth.

Till then can someone call the helpline and ask about it? I’m in Gujarat and
