[AI] Now, a pen that can read Koran

2011-06-23 Thread Shadab Husain
Now, a pen that can read Koran

J. S. Ifthekhar

The Hindu AN INNOVATION: The Koran reading pen on display at a book store in
Hyderabad. Photo: Nagara Gopal

Can read any verse of the holy book loud and clear

Come Ramzan and Koran is the fastest moving product. But this time round, it
is going to sell in a different format.

The Koran reading pen has hit the market here and more than a month before
Ramzan is to begin, it is making waves here.

What is so special about it? Well, the pen can read any verse of the Koran
loud and clear. All one has to do is to touch it on any page or verse and
listen to the Arabic version.

One can also choose the voice of famous reciters such as Abdul Rahman Al
Sudais, Abdul Baset Abdu Essmad, Ali Al Hudhaifi, Sa'd Al-Ghamidi.

This is not all. Translation of the Koran is also available just at the push
of a button. You can go for English, German, Urdu, Persian and French
versions.

In good demand

This Chinese product is in good demand at the chains of Himalaya Book store
in the city. It comes with a copy of Koran printed in rich Uthmani font, a
functional manual, ear phones, charger and a Tajweed Book - all at Rs.
3,750.

For people who do not know the Arabic script, the pen is of great help.
They can learn to read Koran in the right diction. Others can also improve
their recitation, says Abdul Momin, manager at the Himalaya Book store.

The Tajweed Book is an added attraction. With the help of the pen, one can
learn to pronounce the Arabic alphabets with the right intonation.

The pen has a four GB memory with TF card option to extend it. There is also
the recording option and a built-in speaker with USB port.

Interestingly, the pen can read only the accompanying Koran and Tajweed Book
since it connects with the special ink used in the print.

For the devout, there is something new to look forward to this Ramzan.

Hello,
for giving text heading style, select the text and press
Alt+ Control +1 for heading 1, 2 for heading 2 and so forth...
But remember that after heading 6, generally JAWS doesn't read text as
heading level 7 or 8 or 9.

Onemore thing, after given heading style to any text placing cursor
there and pressing Alt+left or right arrow, will increase and decrease
the heading style.
Say text is given heading style 2, pressing alt+left arrow will change
it into heading 1, and pressing alt+right arrow will change it into
heading 3.
Hope it will be helpful...

[AI] Help needed in Gwalior

2011-06-23 Thread Eyeway Helpdesk
Hi all,

One of our helpdesk callers from Gwalior has a 4-year-old son who is totally
blind since birth due to Retinopathy of Prematurity.

On our suggestion he is considering to put his son in a mainstream school. He
being in a senior position in administration of a CBSE affiliated school, he
would not have any problem in admitting his son in the same.

But he is unaware of how would his child learn in the classroom, how would the
teachers do, and what they as parents need to do. So as first steps, for
building his understanding, we have connected him with a few progressive
parents of visually impaired children, with NAB in Delhi and Mumbai, and told
him broadly about how inclusive education happens, and passed on the relevant
circulars of CBSE.

Can anyone also suggest some organisation/individuals in Gwalior or the
vicinity, who can mentor or share their experience with the school as well as
with the parents to enable the child to study in the mainstream school.

To put the child in the mainstream school, he also would need a braille teacher.

Any suggestions on the above would be of great help. This is also an
opportunity to make one more school inclusive, as apparently he has support
from its management for his child.

hanks and regards,

Re: [AI] Help required wtih copying tables from PDF to excel

2011-06-23 Thread Roopakshi Pathania

Hi,

Before I answer your question, I am curious about 2 things.

1. What do you your colleagues when faced with the same situation? Surely they
have an established method.
2. Somewhat related to the first question, if your company subscribes to a paid
data source, doesn't that provide you with financial statements in different
formats? While publicly available financial statements are usually in PDFs, I
don't think that's true for paid data sources.

Finally, to answer your question, here is a free online service that converts
PDF to Excel, and is as good as any desktop based solution.
http://www.pdftoexcelonline.com

Usually it is better and quicker to extract financials from HTML to Excel using
VBA.
Also, there are free sources that provide comparative financial statements
directly in CSV format, let me know if that would be of any help.

[AI] Creating enabling environments

2011-06-23 Thread Shadab Husain
Creating enabling environments

Kalpana Kannabiran

The denial of equality, dignity and autonomy to persons with disabilities
lies at the core of disability rights.

Disability need not be an obstacle to success . It is my hope that . this
century will mark a turning point for inclusion of people with disabilities
in the lives of their societies. - Professor Stephen Hawking, Foreword,
World Report on Disability.

The inauguration of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons
with Disabilities (UNCRPD) in 2008 signalled the recognition of disability
as a human rights issue. Research in different countries has demonstrated
the ways in which disability is a development issue as well by mapping its
bidirectional link to poverty. The World Health Organisation's World Report
on Disability (WRD), prepared in response to a request of the World Health
Assembly, affirms the work of disability rights advocates and attempts to
fill the knowledge and information gap on disability.

The lack of a standard measure of disability across countries makes
definition, comparisons and statistical estimates of the incidence a
challenging task. Combining the 2010 population estimates and the 2004
disability prevalence estimates of the World Health Survey and Global Burden
of Disease, the WRD estimates that there are over a billion people, i.e. 15
per cent of the world's population (including children), living with
disability (p.29). The National Disability Policy of India estimated in 2006
that the disabled constitute 2.13 per cent of the country's population.

It is now widely understood that environment determines a person's
experience of disability - either as a facilitator or barrier. But what do
we mean by environment? The International Classification of Functioning,
Disability and Health (ICF), which the WRD draws on, maps environmental
factors ranging from technological and built environment to emotional and
psycho-social environments that influence active participation. Importantly,
this classification makes a distinction between capacity and actual
performance, the gap between which could be indicative of the environmental
barriers that need to be eliminated.

Accessibility is a concern that cuts across different domains of environment
and must reach persons across disabilities. While it is widely acknowledged
that accessibility standards are indispensable to inclusion and
non-discrimination on grounds of disabilities, these have largely been left
to the goodwill of the institutions - state and private. The WRD observes,
Laws with mandatory access standards are the most effective way to achieve
accessibility (page 175).

Disability audits of public and health care services, of existing and
proposed policy and of institutions and organisations, have pointed to the
practices of exclusion and indirect discrimination resulting from a lack of
sensitivity to the needs of people with disabilities. A global survey in
2005 showed that of 114 countries, 37 had no training in place for
rehabilitation professionals and 56 had not updated medical knowledge of
health care providers on disability (WRD, page 110). Aggravating these
barriers in the structural and systemic environment are mental barriers -
negative stereotypes and stigmatisation - that question the right to choice,
family life, adoption and such for persons with disabilities (page 6).

While there is a general tendency to homogenise disability and flatten out
the diversity of condition and capability, disability is, in fact,
stunningly diverse and encompasses the child with learning disabilities, the
injured soldier and the elderly man with severely impaired mobility, not to
speak of survivors of violence and the mentally ill.

The distinction between disability and ill-health is an important one. The
WRD cites an Australian National Health Survey in which 40 per cent of
people with severe or profound disability rated their health as good, very
good or excellent (p. 8). Yet, unarguably, ensuring the prevention of health
conditions that lead to disability is a development concern. The World
Health Survey cited in the WRD draws attention to attitudinal, physical and
systemic barriers that impede the access of the disabled to health care,
drawing on the findings of research in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu that
pointed to cost, lack of local services and transportation as being the top
three obstacles to using health facilities (p. 62-63). The financing of
health care, making it affordable and making medical equipment accessible to
the disabled remain an urgent concern. The failure of service providers to
communicate in appropriate formats or with sensitivity to the needs of the
disabled care seekers might result, as it did in Zimbabwe, in the exclusion
of the disabled from routine screening and counselling services (p. 72).
Care coordination, in this context, is extremely important, and short-term
increases in service delivery costs are compensated by

A modified carrom board for blind
Express News Service ,
The New Indian Express
Posted on Jun 23, 2011 at 01:12pm IST.

HYDERABAD: Do you know that chess is the only indoor game available
for the visually impaired in the world? Now, thanks to a a research
officer of the National
Institute for the Visually Handicapped (NIVH), they can play carroms too.

Their board, however, will have 21 holes instead of the standard four.
This carrom board is especially made for persons who are visually
impaired.

It is the brainchild of Dr Milan Dass, a Research Officer of NIVH, who
did it for the students of the Devnar Foundation For The Blind
(DFFTB). “In this
world a visually impaired person has access only to two games - Chess
and Cricket.

So, considering the limitations I have designed a new carrom board,” Dass said.

The game will be played with a C-stopper, which will be fixed behind
one of the 21 holes. Using a striker which is modified into a cresent
shape, the player
can put any coin into the hole. “The opponent will dictate into which
hole the coin has to be deposited. So the player who finishes all the
nine coins
first will be considered a winner,” Dass explained.

It took him four days to prepare the modified carrom board and
students of DFFTB are enjoying it immensely.
