Re: [AI] Screen Readers: Maintaining careful listening for long time?
Hi Amar, One option is to use sounds for indicating various proof reading items such as capitalization. This may provide some variety. If sounds do not work for you, then try using different voices. Barring this, try a Braille display to see if that helps. Pranav -Original Message- From: accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Amar Jain Sent: Monday, November 07, 2011 10:02 AM To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: [AI] Screen Readers: Maintaining careful listening for long time? Dear All, Looking for experts’ views in this matter. This problem relates to my study as well. We understand the fact that we heavily rely on audio since we use screen readers. Now when you have to work with them for long hours, and at the same time you have to maintain careful reading, so that you don’t end up missing the most tricky things. Given the fact that I am in one of those field where every single word has its own value, I am at great loss if after some time, my same power of concentration starts reducing. (Please understand the fact that it is not that I am not able to comprehend the things, nor it is so that screen readers miss the things due to fast speed, nor it is so that since I use Jaws at 62% (109) with all punctuations, I am missing the things.) In such a case, what is happening is that since the audio is keep playing, sometimes you feel that you are getting the whole thing fit in your brains, but actually some of the minutest detail you start missing. (they just pass through your ears but details do not process in your brain). Please note, word is ‘minutest’. Reduction in speed is not a good solution, nor I can afford taking frequent breaks (specially when I start working). Switching to speakers instead of headphones can be temporary solution till the time I don’t enter in my job. What solutions you all apply in such situations? I feel specially those who are into proof reading can suggest me some solution of this problem. But that doesn’t mean that I am excluding others from giving their views. If my problem is understood at the appropriate level and if it is taken in right way, then I am sure to see a very healthy discussion on this point. And I know this fact that there will be many who must have faced this problem, whether they realize it or not, that is all together a different issue. Look forward for some solution. Please download the TTS softwares from the following link: https://sourceforge.net/projects/tts-indianlang/files/ For Telugu windows version, NVDA has to be downloaded separately and installed. This is a SAPI compatible voice. Your feedbacks and suggestions are welcome on the software. I'm pasting herewith excerpts from the general instructions and the 'Read Me' file for your convenience. The product has been tested with windows XP and windows 7. English words are read out using Telugu sound units. Tested with applications like notepad, wordprocessor, xls, browser. Please download NVDA 2010.1 version(nvda_2010.1_installer.exe) from http://sourceforge.net/projects/nvda/files/releases/2010.1/ Install NVDA from the downloaded executable. After installing NVDA, run setup_iiit_tel_fm.exe to install the Telugu sapi voice. In the DVD provided, this exe is self installable. After installing the Telugu sapi voice, start NVDA. By default English voice will come. 1. In NVDA Preference menu -> Synthesizer, Select Microsoft Speech API (sapi) 2. In NVDA Preference menu -> Voice settings, Select iiit_tel_fm as the voice. dear friend, even i have faced such problem during my study days, during those days there were no computers we used to relai on tape recorders and braille notes. while listening to notes on screen readers at the same time you should read braille notes, now do not ask where will we find braille notes we should prepare notes ourself. the main problem now days is that students totally depend on audio materials they should use reading also which will increase consentration . [AI] Now, picture password to protect your online account!
Another hurdle to accessibility? Now, picture password to protect your online account! Sunday, 06 November 2011 18:57 PTI | London Find it difficult to remember your password? Here's some good news -- researchers claim to have developed picture password for your online account, which will also help protect against hacking. An international team says that it's actually a new kind of login which relies on the fallibility of human memory to prevent phishing attempts at stealing one's account details, the 'New Scientist' reported. The researchers at Stony Brook University in New York have, in fact, come up with a system, called PhorceField, that makes it almost impossible to login without viewing the correct images. PhorceField asks users to create a graphical password by choosing four images in a particular order from a set of twelve -- you might choose pictures of a loaf of bread, a candle flame, and two more, for example. These images are stored in a secret file on computer that only the legitimate website can access. When one logins, one simply remembers which images to click on among a set of others that aren't part of one's password. A phisher who wants to trick you into giving up your PhorceField password knows nothing about the secret images, and so must present one with a huge number of possibilities in the hope of getting the right set of pictures. This means that one will struggle to identify the correct ones -- one might remember that the password includes a loaf of bread, but was it round or oblong? A close shot, or taken at a distance? Eventually, after a number of failed logins, you will just give up and leave the phishing site without ever having revealed your password, say the researchers. The researchers tested PhorceField on 23 users and found that 76 per cent failed to reveal even a single image from their password during a phishing attempt, and none revealed the entire password -- for once, being forgetful pays off. They will present their work at the Annual Computer Security App Vikas Kapoor, MSN Id: dl_vi...@hotmail.com, Yahoo&Skype Id: dl_vikas, Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. Re: [AI] turning off monitor
Hello, To turn off monitor, just switch to projector from your laptop. The laptop will try to search the projector but it'll not get hence, your laptop will show the message like, 'the projector not found' something... and will say still you want to keep the settings? in the dialog just say yes and the monitor will turn off. To turn on again, switch to monitor. You can switch to projector by pressing FN+1 of the function keys (F1, F2 etc) just search wich function key applys to your laptop. HTH. The rape cases have neither to do with any technology nor accessibility, I think these types of news postings should not be brought on the list as these types of acts are not confined to any people with any disability rather a common phenomena.
