[AI] Robotics legs

2012-02-27 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Times of India

NEW DELHI: Former Chhattisgarh CM Ajit
Jogi can barely wait for
March 16. It is the day when he will first try a pair of robotic legs, making
him the first Indian to do so. Jogi, who has been confined to wheelchair since
the fateful accident in 2004, may now have a chance to stand and walk again.

"I'd like to walk in the garden in front of my house,'' Jogi said when asked
what is the first thing he would like to do after he puts on the robotic legs.

The astute politician may have weathered many a political storm with ease, but
this once he is quietly excited over an invention that could end his days of
wheelchair-dependence.

Doctors and executives from Rex
Bionics will be coming to
Raipur for the trial that is expected to last for about a week to 10 days. "The
company will then decide how soon I can use the product,'' Jogi said on phone
from Raipur.

Rex Bionics is a New Zealand-based global technology firm that is marketing
`robotic exoskeletons (Rex)'. Rex provides independent mobility to wheelchair
users and other mobility impaired persons using advanced robotic technology,
custom-designed electromechanical actuators, precision engineering and
specialized networking systems.

The device is designed to enable its users to stand, walk, scale stairs and
navigate slopes. Each Rex is custom-built for a customer's height, health
requirements and level of mobility. So once the training is done, the device
will be fitted as per Jogi's specifications to make it a perfect fit.

The training covers all aspects of operation and use of Rex, including battery
recharging, walking, climbing stairs and ongoing customer care.

The wait for the device has been long for Jogi. "I found out about the device
last September. There are very few firms dealing with this, so I e-mailed all
of them. But both the American and Israeli firms could not provide the device
so soon. Finally, it was this New Zealand firm that agreed. I can't wait to try
on the legs,'' Jogi said.

Wheelchair users can suffer from multiple health issues arising from lack of
mobility and the secondary complications of wheelchair use like urinary tract,
bowel, cardiovascular, metabolic and skin related problems allied to
psychological conditions all contribute to significant morbidity, care costs
and increased mortality.

With thanks and regards

Re: [AI] excell

2012-02-27 Thread zoher
Dear gajendra it might be because of some settings needs to be corrected
please follow the following steps:

1. Open the Microsoft excel 2007.

2. Now press incert+8 from your alpha numeric keyboard. To open the
jaws keyboard manager.

3. Now pressing down arrow select excel 2007 and press tab key you
will see the list of key commands.

4. Now press alphabet c till you hear "column 1st cell from top.." I
think there might not be key associated with it if this is the case then
define the key stroke as shown in the next step.

5. Press alt key then press right arrow key to go to action, now press
down arrow and hit enter on add button.

6. There you press alt+1 then go to ok button by pressing tab key and
hit enter

7. If dialog box appears then say yes.

8. This is way to define the read first cell in the column. And by
this method you can define all the other settings as per your desired key
strokes

9. It will also provide the warning if the key stroke is already in
use.

Re: [AI] Blind person denied job in railways because of diabetes

2012-02-27 Thread Pankaj Kwatra
Hello All,

Medical examination is done for various jobs and stringent norms are in
place for some jobs. The question arising are:

1. Job actually reserved for VI plus number of vacancies.
2. Whether any person can be disqualified on basis of diabetes or it is
the case of VI only.
3. If disqualified for particular job then some other option can be
offered.

Please gather maximum information via RTI and decide course of action.

Hello Mr. Subramani,

According to me, the best way of finding solution to this chaos is to
first ascertain whether physically fit person too can be disqualified
on the basis of diabetes or not.

If this is a universal rule for all categories of candidates then it
should not be related specifically with VI community. In this case, we
may be one of the victims, but not the exclusive one.

Well, I don't have idea about the definition of "fit" applicable to
all for getting selected for Gov. jobs. But this can be easily
obtained through RTI and its finding should determine the next course
of action.

1. If it is for all, then concentration should be put on discarding
such rules through strong arguments in legal battle. One of such can
be that "if person during service is not thrown out of job due to
diabetes, then why not to appoint with it?"

2. And, if the rule is specially applied for VI candidate, then I
don't think that it would stand in any court on the basis of
"protection from discrimination".

So, just proceed further and invest energy in setting things right.
In my opinion, life's battle is not won by the support or comradeship
of fellows, its your own determination which brings support and
fellows for sharing success with you.

if you have installed jaws 13 along with OCR components, then bring
your kursor to the field where capta need to be captured, press
insert plus space bar followed by the letter o and c you should hear
OCR started and once finished, you will hear OCR complete jaws kursor
and you will hear that code in the voice of jaws kursor. navigate
around with arrow key and you can hear that code. only problem with
this OCR method faced by me couple of time is that it does not read
the capta or skipps reading the code. don't know there is any settings
has to be made for accuracy but by repaeating this process in this
case works for me.

Hi all,

captchas. The beta of NVDA has a similar feature so that may be worth
trying.

 Hi All

Let me make it very plainly, that every one here has come by his / her
own

 will.

At no point of time we had made any claims that AI is the ultimate answer
for all problems of the disabled.

This is a place to share and exchange information that one has picked up
at

any point of time. It is a store house of collective wisdom.

You may or may not get answers to your problem. That is how it is. Yes,
putting appropriate subject line and articulating the problem clearly
 certainly helps.

All though I really don't intend to say this, however, looking at your
outburst, I am compelled to say that if this list fails to meet your

May we now put to rest this deviation?

Dear Uma,
for your first question, if the original text is moderately good, it is
almost certain that we get good recognition and most of the time, you need
not to edit it before reading. please send me a copy of a book you have
scanned off the list along with the following information and I try to give
you suggestion for improving the scanning quality.

1. which software you use to scan and convert the pages?
2. which scanner you use?
3. what is the hardware configuration of your computer and operating system?
(some times, OCRs require much resources)
4. what are the settings you had for scanning and recognition such as
resolution, brightness, image quality, OCR program, etc.
for your 2nd question, I can answer only after seeing the problems in your
scanned books and also your present way of proof reading. in the mean while,
since you are partially blind as suggested by your mail, you can increase
the level of magnification, invert colour for better contrast and less
effect to eyes etc.
for your 3rd question, Akhilesh has given the best answer. I often resort to
internet for any acts and rules if and when I need them. apart from the
sites he has said, many of the departments and ministries publish the legal
texts related to them on their web sites. it is appreciable that we are
fastly moving towards e-governance. in Karnataka, the government also has
brought out a CD containing most of the acts and rules of the state
government. may I know in which state are you working?

Hi Uma,
I don't remember the mail written by Rajesh sir. But yeah one thing
for sure that it is a very demanding profession and one can not
succeed here unless he or she has sheer determination to crush the
defeats, to overpower the fear of failure, and most importantly
cutting the all routes of retreat!!!

Coming to the point: All bare acts are available online,
Indiankanoon.org is absolutely free for case laws, daily orders and
cases can be found in each and every high court site, Supreme Court
site is also free, judis.nic.in is totally free as well.

Use the fine reader for scanning. Search on the internet. To me,
internet has benefited all Visually-challenged, but
visually-challenged lawyers have got benefited the most

Wishing you a grate success, challenging and enjoying career!!!
Happy lawyering!!!

Thanks

Re: [AI] Blind person denied job in railways because of diabetes

2012-02-27 Thread Himanshu Sahu
Hello Mr.

Well, I don’t have idea about the definition of “fit” applicable to
all for getting selected for Gov. jobs. But this can be easily
obtained through RTI and its finding should determine the next course
of action.

1. If it is for all, then concentration should be put on discarding
such rules through strong arguments in legal battle. One of such can
be that “if person during service is not thrown out of job due to
diabetes, then why not to appoint with it?”

2. And, if the rule is specially applied for VI candidate, then I
don’t think that it would stand in any court on the basis of
“protection from discrimination”.

So, just proceed further and invest energy in setting things right.
In my opinion, life’s battle is not won by the support or comradeship
of fellows, its your own determination which brings support and
fellows for sharing success with you.

people around you are constantly dejecting your confidence.
However, a belief on god and more importantly, in your own abilities

myself, and therefore, It should work for you as well.

The government tenders are definetly available to view in multiple

You haven’t clarified what business that you’re looking to start
with, so please provide more information about the type of tenders
that you’re looking for, and someone on the list will answer you
about it.

Meanwhile, i’d like to invite you for bringing your ideas on a table

About me, I’m a software engineer, and currently working as

these are just vague excuses. By mistake, someone posts an off-topic
matter, most if not all are up in arms against the poster. I don't agree with
the notion that subjectline doesn't indicate actual matter. If off-topic
mails can catch the attention of why not a mail routed through the moderator?
Subjectline is quitre as the matter pertains to recruitment and its rules

would be of help. Forget all those who don't have any solutions in this regard,
what about those know such matters? Coming to the citing of moderator's
comments that all mails need not be replied to, it depends on the gravity of
the issue. Coming to discussion of useless maters, you need not remind me of
the delet button as all computer users well-versed with that necessary button
and hence I do use to ignore such mails. Its ridiculous to say I am not the
person to judge which is the otherway of deflecting from the main issue. I
shall never take back my remarks and shall standby them. Moreover, you have

  dear friends,
sorry for the late reply. Dear Subramani, first of all, I request you to
modify the first line of your message properly as your messages from 11:50
am to 1:30 PM today were containing the subject lines in the message body
and making the reading difficult for the VI. coming to your comments,
there
may be various reasons for no response. first of all, there were some
problems in your mail itself. your subject line was not clear and up to
the
real problem. you wrote it as recruitment rules which does not carry any
message itself that a person is seriously affected by a current burning
problem. that's why the moderator is repeatedly telling about the subject

found

govern the recruitment of that job? if not, you have to get it through RTI

person 40 years. does this has anything to do with the disqualification?
or
you put it just to emphasis his problem of not getting the job at the late

  reply to every message.

so, please take back your harsh remarks on the list and its members. they
are very offensive. responding to a message has nothing to do with
knowledge
and competence and you are not a competent person to judge them. I have
seen
no off topic message flooding the replies since my entry. the moderator is
nipping them in the bud. you said the case affects every person. but other
than off topic issues, all the matters are related to blind and any one

Re: [AI] how a VI can be independent ?

2012-02-27 Thread Vamshi. G
Hi Uma,

well, there might be a few books available in electronic format. And
publishers like Pearson are considering selling books in e format.
And subscribing to book share may help to some extent. Inclusive
planet will also do its bit.

But this still remains a major issue of concern for visually
challenged people, especially in areas like law where reading material
is voluminous. Once Rajesh sir has written a very good mail clearly
explaining the challenges faced in the profession of law. I remember
forwarding the same mail to you. Go through it again.

disqualification is due to diabetes alone or otherwise. But after due

Whether the post of Group D in question was identified/reserved for blind?
If no, I am afraid the disqualification may have other reasons than alleged
diabetes.

  Hi,

I thought you could have gained some attention by putting more
appropriate subject line which explicitly states the story. hence I
  have changed the subject line.

First, this disqualification is not on the ground of disability, but
on the ground of a disease (diabetes). So, I doubt whether PWD Act
  applies to this case.
We should find out whether government can disqualify on the ground of
  such diseases .

Second, I heard of some case where a person with HIV positive has been
disqualified and the court gave the ruling against such denial. So,
if HIV positive can't be denied a job, sure a person with diabetes
shouldn't be. however I'm not sure of any concrete legal remedy.

You may hear more from legal experts.

[AI] Fwd: Invite for a workshop on Accessible Devices For Disabled

Subject: Invite for a workshop on Accessible Devices For Disabled
To: sambhavana.gr...@gmail.com

Sambhavana Organization in collaboration with Karishma Enterprise
Mumbai invites you for a one day workshop on Role and Significance of
Assistive Technology for Teaching Learning Process on First March,
2012 from 10 A.M to 4 P.M. in the Seminar Hall, Department of
Chemistry, Science Faculty, North Campus, University Of Delhi. This is
an attempt to make people aware about the accessible technology which
would enable a disabled to access the class room and the Library for
teaching learning purposes. We all are aware about the inaccessible
conditions prevailing in the class rooms and libraries of Colleges and
Departments of DU. In this context, this is an attempt to spread
awareness among the policy makers of DU to realize how the
potentiality of Disabled can play a very significant role in academic
excellence and the growth of an Institution.
The workshop will also provide exposure to the Disabled Teachers and
Students to the various available softwares and devices and their
importance in the teaching-learning process. These devices and
softwares are going to be displayed for the first time in DU. The wide
range of accessible media that will be exhibited in the workshop will
cover various disabilities.
The first half of the workshop will reflect upon the need and
relevance of modern technology for the vision impaired students and
teachers in teaching learning process. The second half of the workshop
will focus upon the Live demonstration of these devices and facilitate
the students and teachers to interact with the organizers to know
about these in detail. Having these devices through Enabling Units,
will certainly help the Disabled to build Resource Centre in their
Colleges and Departments which may go a long way in facilitating
accessible environment in these institutions.
We therefore appeal all the University fraternity to participate in
this important exercise so that we all can strive collectively towards
making University and the teaching-learning process in the University
accessible for all.

Looking forward to see you there.

With best regards.

Dear Rakesh,

Please change the title of the post. Airlines haven't started it now.
They have done it in the past also. you can put the title something
like
"continuation of discrimination against disabled by airlines",
Even after necessary fights, issuance of necessary circulars,
directions by competent authorities, etc. This only shows the gap
that continues to exist between rules and practice.

Stricter punishments to violators, awareness amongst the disabled
community about their rights, emphathetic staff , needs of the hour.

Subject: [AI] Cellular Signal booster

Hi

I need to know more about a device which boosts the cellular / wifi signal
indoors where the network conditions are poor and unreliable. Unfortunately,
I'm not too sure what is that thing called.

As my sis has recently moved to a house where there is virtually no cellular
network coverage because the house is located pretty much inside, I'm
exploring the options of getting this device for her. If feasible she can
go for it; or else may be she's better off getting a landline wired
telephone instead.

Thanks

Syed

[AI] Fw: A small question to you all in which you all can give your sudjestions.

sudjestions.

Dear Harish,

I was just referring to RFID being simple rather than it being complex. I have
failed to understand your usage of the word complex from the point of an extra
gadget. I was referring to a simple technical meaning.

As some one asked me to explain I am explaining in brief. RF or RFID is a
simple radio transmitter and receiver like our FM radio. Instead of audio on FM
data is sent over radio waves.

In a given scenario here the user uses the transmitter to send a req to
receiver the counter. And thus a message can be passed to the counter seeking
attention.

Specific usage in VI community is to locate baggage on a conveyor belt at
airports. Pls pardon me for referring the airport scenario as it is a sensitive
subject at the moment and I hope that this is just for the purpose of
understanding. Or may be used in any other identification system.

Such a solution costs no more than a few hundred rupees and is easily available
in the form of a key ring.

Regards,

Kiran S Deshpande.

What do you mean by pretending?
Aren't we blind?
By the way if there is strike for 5 or 6 day's then we have to check
out and find the place by our selves.
We can only get to know about the place by hitting each cornor.
So the best way to know the place is to use the white cane and trace
all the places in the Cafeteria.
But on a strike someone will be there.

Re: [AI] A small question to you all in which you all can give yoursudjestions.

2012-02-27 Thread akhilesh
Hi,
Very interesting question.
Ask the nearest sitting person to call the cafeteria staff. I've
applied this trick even in unknown places, and most of the time it
works. Share this issue with the canteen staff as well. Try to occupy
the nearest seat to the counter. During my college days, this “nearest
seat to the counter” farmula worked very well.

Thanks,

Hi Phen

In software development, one of the principle is KISS which stands for Keep It
Simple Silly.

There are 2 solutions I can think of readily:
1 Non technology- You say it is a crowded place, then there would be folks al
around, Excuse yourself that someone closest to you can hear you, tell him what
you want, that is all.

2 technology based- call the caterer on your mobile and confuse him a bit/ he
would be wondering why you are calling him inside the cateferia on mobile
.

If you want a still more complicated solution, you can consider RFID for that.

You can reply to messages and comments to a post directly from your email

Subject: [AI] This time not Geeha, but Tony kurian, was not given

Hi all,
Don't you think that it is our right that we can travel through the flight?

How we can ignore such kind of discriminations and insults?

Most of us are working on some important designations and also we can
have emergencies in our life and if at that time we will face this
issue then nothing will be worst then that.

I think, avinash is right when he is making such kind of quotations.
According to me we should fight against it and we should bring the
attention of all other people who are not aware of it. We also can
take the help of media people.

I may be wrong at this time but this is very sensitive issue and we
should take the step against it.

Regards,

Nazrulhuda Khan.

2012-02-27 Thread Kotian, H P

Harish.

Subject: [AI] A small question to you all in which you all can give your

Dear all,

I am working in Eastern condiments PVT LTD Kochi.
I wanted to ask one question.
That is when you are eating your food in the Cafeteria and in which
the server serves you the food and in which you feel that one of the
side dishes are dellicious and you want to take some more.
Now My question is If we want some more side dishes to be served How
can we do that when we are in a crouded place?
If we want to call the server how do we do it instead of shouting and
creating disturbance?
Is there any device which we can show a signal that we want somemore
or should we raise my hand's or is there some other way?
If there is some other device then please let me know I can at least
install that into my cafeteria in my company.
Hope that I can get some good sudjestions and hope that all have
understood my question.

No, gentle words cement dealings with gentle people.
further, you are taken for granted.
Disability is like caste in India.
people talk, write, lecture to abolish discrimination, but when it
comes to practice, they intentially forget their own prescriptions.
our methods can varry, but goal is the same to spread awareness, and
educate people about disability issues.
So just leave this here only, and get back to work.
Thank you.

Re: [AI] This time not Geeha, but Tony kurian, was not given ticket by Indigo, why? was told, he is blind

2012-02-27 Thread zoher

Why is it happens that rather than god the society makes us more disabled.

We have to face such incidence in every woks of our life. It so happens that
the government provides the facilities is also snatched from us.

I am a regular commuter of Indian railways. One day I went to by the ticket
for third a.c. the ticket staff was seating on the window, told “government
concession deta hay to mazzai karo” then I replied to him that at list I am
paying the money you people travel without any amount.

There is no reservation quota for VI. In Indian railways so many times I
have to travel in handicap bogy. But all the other peoples bribes the police
and guard and travel. In that bogy, one day, en engineer of the railway with
his entire family climbed in the bogy and bribed the guard and police man,
then that person asked my escort to get up to make seat himself comfortable,
but I told my escort not to get up. then I stood up and gave him the place
to seat. After this incidence the lady from their family created some place
for me. At that time I felt that in the bogy which is my right to seat, I
was at the mercy of other people.

What I used to do in my previous Office canteen that 1st I got oriented with
the entire place of Cafeteria and it's main Counter.
Whenever I wanted more food or dish, I used to go to the Counter and ask
them for the delivery. Later the waiters started to come to us to ask
whether we need some more dishes whenever we used to be on the table for
food.
I was in a habit to have my food or snaks along with my friends in my
previous Office and this is what I do in the current Office as well on most
of the occasions. If we have friends sitting with us while eating, we can
also ask them for more things that we need.
Just be familiar with the crowd and the canteen staff, managing in the
Cafeteria would not be that problem. Its a temporary difficulty which should
be resolved gradually as often as you go to Cafeteria. I am sure once the
people in your Office know about you, they would also help you in the
Canteen. And asking for assistance whenever and where ever you require, is
not a bad thing. I would not support the technique of Raising hand in the
crowd. Its not good in the Corporat environment.

Use them in an assertive manner, add the touch of your expression.

[AI] Making our skies inclusive

2012-02-27 Thread Kotian, H P
Hello
Pasting a message, which did not get on the list.
Harish Kotian
Quoting:

The Hindu Sunday Magazine

Making our skies inclusive
JO CHOPRA

The Jeeja Ghosh episode makes the strongest case yet for inclusive education in
our schools. JO CHOPRA

Jeeja Ghosh being forced to disembark from a SpiceJet flight for which she had
paid and on which she was already seated is the most brilliant evidence yet for
why India's schools should be inclusive.
Jeeja has Cerebral Palsy. Her speech can be difficult to understand and she
requires assistance with baggage. She also heads the Advocacy unit at one of
India's finest institutions - the Indian Institute for Cerebral Palsy (IICP) in
Kolkata. She is highly educated, with advanced degrees in Social Work, one from
Leeds University in the UK, and has travelled widely for work and pleasure.
But on Sunday, Jeeja came up against deep-seated ignorance and fear in the form
of a pilot named Utprabh Tiwari. Captain Tiwari, who clearly never attended an
inclusive school and has no experience with the wide range of abilities and
limitations present in the human race, saw a passenger he couldn't make sense
of.
In his world - and you can't blame him because he is a victim of limitation
himself - Jeeja Ghosh was an unknown quantity and a potential hazard for the
safety of his flight. He behaved as he thought best, given his
responsibilities, and one can only feel pity for him. He may have known how to
fly a jet plane, but he lacked the most basic understanding of human
development, diversity, ways of moving, adaptation, determination and courage.
No space for difference
Unfortunately for all of us, Captain Tiwari got the same education most
children in India receive: it was, judging by the results, narrow, myopic and
highly conventional. It was an education which teaches children that everyone
should look and act the same.
Because Indian education is exclusive. Children with disabilities are welcome
only on paper. Ask any parent of a child with special needs. Ask any adult who
has survived the system. Ask Jeeja Ghosh.
Including children with special needs in mainstream classrooms is not only
their constitutional right, it is the only possible way to create the kind of
world we all want to live in.
Typical children who grow up in inclusive classrooms learn - at the very least
- that disability is nothing to be afraid of. They learn that people may look
different, yet can still be their friends. That a person who can't speak can
still communicate. That you can't judge a book by its cover and that everyone
has both strengths and weaknesses.
Special needs kids who grow up in inclusive classrooms learn to have higher
expectations for their lives. They stop apologising for their difficulties and
begin to allow themselves to dream about their futures rather than dread them.
They start to see their classmates as friends and allies rather than potential
tormentors. They discover that the world is not a cold and hostile place but a
place where people support and help one another.
Let's replay the Jeeja Ghosh story, this time with a pilot who had attended an
inclusive school - right from the age of three. There was a girl in his class
who had Down Syndrome and a boy in the class ahead of him who had Cerebral
Palsy. There was also a boy who was smarter than any of them and who could tell
you anything you needed to know about dinosaurs. It turned out later he had
Autism, but no one knew or cared then.
So there's the pilot standing just outside the cockpit, greeting the passengers
as they board. He sees Jeeja walking down the boarding ramp and he recognises
the distinctive CP gait. His heart lifts a little remembering the first friend
he ever had with CP - Roshan, Class One - and he gives Jeeja an extra broad
smile as he welcomes her to Flight 803 to Goa.
"Welcome aboard!" he says. "Any help we can offer you?" He checks her boarding
pass and sees that she is seated way back in Aisle 35. Though as the pilot,
seating arrangements aren't part of his job, he asks the head stewardess to see
if she can find a seat closer to the front so Jeeja doesn't have to walk so
far. "In Business Class if need be," he adds quietly.
Unforgettable
Sound unlikely? I will never forget the Irish steward on a British Airways
flight from Delhi to London who helped me board with my daughter Moy Moy who
has severe special needs - as he was leading us to our seats in Economy, he
noticed she was drooling and without a moment's hesitation, he wiped her chin
for her. As he settled us in our seats, he said, "I don't think you'll be
comfortable enough here. Let me see what I can do." A few moments later, he
returned and moved us into Business Class.
The man sitting next to us there, who had paid good money for his fancy seat,
could have objected or at least made us feel awkward and unwelcome but instead
he did everything possible to help us, including looking after Moy whe

[AI] Cellular Signal booster

2012-02-27 Thread SYED IMRAN

Thanks

Syed
