About which teacher you are talking? R u talking about primary school teacher? Whatever it may be they can not refuse to appoint. [AI] Fix Windows fast
Christopher Null offers 21 solutions to the most common problems affecting Windows 7, Vista and XP Windows doesn't always work the way you want it to. The operating system (OS) has its own quirky methods of getting things done. And sometimes, it breaks down. Tweaking the OS and fixing such issues keeps consultants employed and magazines like PC Advisor in business. But not everything requires expert advice. With that in mind, we offer this collection of five-minute fixes - a broad range of tweaks, upgrades and how-tos for some of your PC's most aggravating problems. Share files between home PCs Time required: 5 minutes Homegroups is the easiest and fastest way to network Windows 7 PCs together. Open the Homegroups Control Panel on the PC from which you want to share the file. If a Homegroup doesn't already exist, click 'Create a Homegroup'. Choose the file types you'd like to share and click Next. You'll receive a password for the Homegroup. Make a note of it. Allow Windows to update everything then, on the other computer, open the Homegroups Control Panel. You should see the Homegroup you just created. Click 'Join now', then follow the wizard. To find shared files, look for your Homegroup in Windows Explorer's left pane. Other networked PCs will be listed there, and the shared files will appear on the right. Should you ever wish to change your Homegroup password, open the Homegroups Control Panel on a machine that's already in the group and click 'Change the password'. Access Mac files on a Windows 7 PC Time required: 2 minutes On the Mac, visit System Preferences, Network and click Advanced. Click the WINS tab. Change the 'Workgroup' setting to the same Workgroup your PCs use. If you're not sure of the name, you can find this setting in your PC's System Control Panel. Click Ok. Still in System Preferences, open Sharing and select the 'File Sharing' option. In the Shared Folders pane, select the folders you wish to share. In the Users pane, give rights to each folder as appropriate, assigning either 'Read Only' or 'Read Write' to the 'Everyone' group. Next, click Options and select the option to 'Share files and folders using SMB'. Click Done. In System Preferences, open Accounts. Click the padlock, then choose 'Guest Account' in the left pane. Select 'Allow guests to connect to shared folders'. For more details on sharing resources across a cross-platform home network, see the Extend Homegroups to all Troubleshooter on our DVD. Stop AutoPlay irritations Time required: 2 minutes You probably plug all kinds of devices into your PC. Each opens a Windows AutoPlay pop-up, which can quickly get annoying. To disable AutoPlay for an individual device, plug in the device and allow its drivers to install. The AutoPlay window will pop up. Close it by clicking the X. Disconnect the device, then plug it back in. The AutoPlay window will pop up again. Click 'View more AutoPlay options in Control Panel'. At the bottom of the screen, you'll see your newly connected device. Change 'Choose a default' to 'Take no action'. Click Save. This option will not be available the first time you connect a device, hence the requirement to plug in, disconnect and reconnect the device. To turn off AutoPlay for all devices, deselect 'Use AutoPlay for all media and devices' in the 'View more AutoPlay options' screen. Kill a stuck program Time required: 30 seconds If a program isn't responding, you can terminate it using the Windows Task Manager. Press Ctrl, Alt, Del. Choose Start Task Manager and select the Processes tab. To identify the offending process, click the Memory header to order the list by which process is using the most RAM. Chances are, your crashed application will be at or near the top of this list. Click the process that has died and choose End Process. Troubleshoot audio problems Time required: 5 minutes If your PC refuses to play sounds, try the following steps. First, reboot the PC. Ensure the audio isn't muted via hardware. Press any external mute buttons (such as on the keyboard), confirm the speakers are turned on, and turn the volume halfway up. Test it by playing a song. If that doesn't work, check Windows settings. Left-click the volume icon in the System Tray and verify the audio isn't muted and is turned up. Right-click the volume icon and choose 'Open Volume Mixer'. Ensure all options are on and turned up. If the internal speakers still aren't working, plug headphones into the audio jack and test again. If you can hear audio through the headphones, unplug them and continue troubleshooting the PC's speakers. Next, right-click the volume icon and choose 'Playback devices'. Confirm that your audio device has a green tick next to it. Click Properties and make sure that 'Use this device (enable)' is selected. If you still can't

[AI] Map data for Ovi maps
Hi all: As requested by few AI members, I downloaded the data for ovi maps day before using the map loader software in my computer. I connected a nokia c5 for the purpose, so believe as earlier it should work with ovi maps 3.03 3.04. The data shared an year ago was also reported to work with version 3.01. If someone experiments by using it with other versions, do share the results. Map downloader is inaccessible with jaws, and the data is free to use, so sharing this with all. Download link for the data: http://www.sendspace.com/file/j6tn10 Its a 254 MB .zip file called 'Ovi maps 3.03, 3.04 data for India 12 April 2012.zip'. Unzipping it would give you a folder of 311 MB. Sometime ago, I also downloaded 10 voices for the same versions which too are free. These have English (all), Hindi, Urdu voices and the beeps only option. Download link for the voices folder (zip file of 35 MB): http://www.sendspace.com/file/uaj9ud For those who would not know its utility and how to use it, having the map data offline in the phone not only saves GPRS costs, but also the map software responds faster during navigation etc. How to use: 1. Make sure the phone has the suggested Ovi Maps version. In few phones I have seen it the About page of Ovi maps, which is inaccessible to a screen reader. So take sighted assistance. 2. After downloading this file, unzip it in your PC. It has 16 folders. 3. Connect your phone to PC through USB in mass storage mode. 4. Using your computer browse to your memory card, CITIES, diskcache. Here you would find same 16 folders apart from other folders and files. But their total size would be less than 311 MB. In case the new data files do not work, as a fallback you might like to move the current 16 folders from your memory card to your computer. 5. Now copy the downloaded 16 folders of 311 MB in the diskcache folder in memory card. 6. Unplug your phone from the computer, open Ovi maps and search for cities/states you haven't searched or seen in it before. If it is working fine, which I believe it should, it should show those maps instantly without the need to download map data of those places using GPRS. To use the voices, follow the above directions again for this folder. Hope this helps. Pranay. Re: [AI] Map data for Ovi maps
Hi, Hozefa: Replacing your map data does not affect the places you have saved in favourites. But for other reasons its good to take its back up. You can do so by using the synchronise feature in favourites. For this you need to have an ovi account which you use to log in. This would be useful when you want to get your favourites back after formatting, or in a new phone. Srikanth: I do not know if it would work in BEL version of nokia phones. As mentioned I have seen its compatiblility in phones which have ovi maps 3.03/3.04, and Manish of Delhi reported it worked well with 3.01, which are not BEL versions. You will have to take your call if you want to experiment. thanks, Pranay. - Original Message - From: Hozefa Tambawala starh...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Saturday, April 14, 2012 3:59 PM Subject: Re: [AI] Map data for Ovi maps Thanks very much Pranay for this great contribution. Re: [AI] Map data for Ovi maps
Thanks Pranay. On 4/14/12, Pranay Gadodia pranaygado...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, Hozefa: Replacing your map data does not affect the places you have saved in favourites. [AI] 20 YEARS OF LINUX
The rise of mobility and the cloud could elevate Linux to a level of unprecedented dominance, reports Neil McAllister. Twenty years ago, when Linus Torvalds first announced his new operating system (OS) project to a Usenet discussion group, he had no way of knowing that his creation would become so popular. It's just a hobby, it won't be big and professional, Torvalds wrote on 25 August 1991. Torvalds had begun the project as a fun way to teach himself about the Intel 80386 processor and nothing more. His greatest ambition was merely to see it work. Today, Linux - as Torvalds OS kernel came to be called - is available for just about every modern processor architecture and many archaic ones. Its OSes can power every kind of device, from PCs, netbooks and smartphones to mainframes, supercomputing clusters and beyond. Linux has won the support of industry heavyweights, including Dell, IBM, HP, Novell and Oracle. Red Hat, one of the first commercial Linux vendors, now has a market capitalisation of 7.3 billion dollars. The past 20 years haven't always been easy. Linux has made a few enemies, Microsoft foremost among them. It has faced its share of challenges, both technical and legal, and there are more hurdles ahead. Nonetheless, as Linux enters its third decade, its opportunities have never been greater. Computing is changing, and Linux is not only benefiting from this change but enabling it. Thanks to a shift beyond the PC, Linux is poised to become more than just an OS: it'll be one of the most transformative forces in computing history. The OS the internet built That Linux is helping to usher in a new computing age might come as a surprise to some. Linux has often been accused of following, rather than leading. Since 2003, the SCO Group has alleged that the open-source OS violates intellectual property relating to Unix, and it's true that much of Linux's early market share came at the expense of costly commercial Unix variants. Microsoft has also repeatedly claimed that Linux violates more than 200 patents. Yet Linux has been innovative from its inception. While commercial Unix variants ran on high-end systems based on reduced instruction set computer (Risc) processors, Torvalds designed his OS for Intel hardware, anticipating the trend toward low-cost x86 servers. And while Microsoft was famously slow to adapt to the internet, Linux has had the web at its core from the beginning. Torvalds has played a pivotal role throughout its existence and still co-ordinates each new kernel release - for example, it was he who dubbed a recent stable kernel Linux 3.0, despite it having no landmark features or incompatibilities. As one of the world's most successful open-source projects, Linux represents the contributions of countless programmers worldwide. Anyone can download it, inspect it, learn from it, modify it or use it, free of charge, and with no obligation other than to allow others to do the same - all thanks to the internet. Some contributors have been individuals, and many have hailed from educational institutions. In recent years, however, the game has changed. Commercial interests are now the most prominent actors in the Linux development process. Of the top 20 contributors to Linux 3.0, more than half were acting on behalf of their employers. Linux is everywhere The relationship between Linux and the internet has been mutually beneficial. Just as Linux development has benefited from the rise of the internet, so too has the internet prospered from Linux's evolution. Today, the open- source OS is everywhere. It powers web servers, email servers, file servers, databases and more. In fact, according to Linux Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin, you use it every time you surf the internet. For example, search engines have become the de facto home pages for most web users. Google leads the pack with 66 percent market share, and Google's servers run on Linux. So do most of Yahoo's, according to the Netcraft site survey. Even Microsoft Bing uses the Akamai content-delivery network, which runs on Linux. It's likely that none of these companies or their services would exist if it weren't for the massive scalability provided by low-cost Linux servers. Slow growth on the desktop Yet, as strong as Linux is in the data centre, it's notoriously weak on the desktop. Some PC and netbook vendors ship systems with Linux preinstalled, but sales of these are typically low. Many pundits have pointed to Linux's failure to displace Windows as evidence that it will never succeed as a client-side OS. But are they right? Where desktop Linux use can be measured, the OS seems to have found a niche among government agencies and large corporations, which typically enforce strict controls over employee

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Expert computing advice Chris Byers tackles readers hardware and software conundrums INSUFFICIENT RESOURCES Q Whenever I try to connect to the internet I get the error message 'C: backslash Program files backslash Internet Explorer.exe. Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. I'm using Windows XP and Internet Explorer (IE) 8.0. How do I fix this, please? Kirsty As the error suggests, Windows is struggling to run IE. This could be due to a lack of disk space, RAM or processing power. If you've previously been able to run IE without problems, try a little housekeeping using CCleaner ( tinyurl.com slash 673cywt). This will remove any temporary files from your browser, as it's possible that you've filled up the web cache. It will also delete other temporary files and your Recycle Bin contents, and clean up other parts of the operating system where clutter accumulates. If this doesn't help, use Task Manager to identify what's hogging system resources. Right-click the Taskbar and select Task Manager. Click the Performance tab for an indication of how hard your computer is working. Have a look at the CPU usage graph. Ideally, your CPU usage should be low when your system is idling (not running any programs). In the 'Physical Memory section you'll see how much memory (RAM) you have and how much is being used by your computer. You ought to have at least 1GB installed. If you have only 512MB, lack of RAM may be the cause of your problem. If you have plenty of RAM but the CPU usage is high, click on the Processes tab. This will show you the programs and system operations running on your computer. The CPU and 'Memory Usage columns indicate the programs and services using the most system resources. Use a search engine to find out which program each service belongs to. Winword.exe is clearly a part of Microsoft Word, for example, but crss.exe isn't obviously a Windows system file. If you find that a process is taking up an inordinate amount of system resources and it's a program that you installed yourself, either close it within Task Manager (simply right-click the program icon and select 'End Process) or uninstall it. It's wise to reboot your PC first, however, since it may simply be a task the program is completing at that moment that's causing it to hog resources. If you still can't get IE to start, try using an alternative web browser, such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Apple Safari. SCREEN NO-SHOW Q My ViewSonic monitor refuses to display a picture. The LED blinks on and off for around 30 minutes, after which time the screen will often work following a restart. A local repair shop says there is nothing wrong with the hardware. Keith Sales The blinking LED indicates no signal to the monitor, and the problem could be as simple as your needing a new monitor lead. The cable pins and internal solder can become loose or cracked with no outwardly visible signs. If your monitor and computer both have more than one connection type, such as VGA and DVI, try using a different input method. Another option is to use a different power source for your monitor, particularly if a single plug is powering your PC and all its peripherals. Failing that, check your graphics card is seated correctly and that its connectors aren't bent or missing. WRONg WI-FI CONNECTION Q My wife's laptop and my internet radio happily talk to our Belkin N modem router on our wireless network, but my Windows XP PC insists on first connecting to a nearby unsecured BT network when waking from Hibernate mode. Sometimes it refuses to connect to our own network until I reboot the router. Anthony Hampson When your computer enters Hibernate mode it switches off the wireless card; on wake up it seeks out the networks it regards as the most accessible. Windows XP isn't the most wireless-friendly operating system, and it has problems correctly starting up hardware when waking from Hibernate. These issues have been fixed in Vista and Windows 7. As XP is no longer supported, you should consider upgrading the operating system (assuming your hardware is up to the task). You can get a copy of Vista Home Premium for just ukp45 at amazon.co.uk. In the meantime, change your settings to make your own wireless network the default, with no other networks available for connection. Open the wireless connection settings, right-click those you don't want to use and select Disable. Next, open the Control Panel and go to Network Connections. Right-click your wireless card and select the Wireless Networks tab. In the box marked 'Preferred networks, ensure your home access point appears at the top by highlighting it and clicking the 'Move up button as necessary. This will force Windows to look only to the preferred connection, ignoring the wireless connections you've disabled.

[AI] Expert computing advice:
YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Expert computing advice: Paul Monckton tackles readers hardware and software conundrums. INACCESSIBLE MSCONFIG Q. I altered some settings in Msconfig, and everything worked fine after a reboot. However, following an overnight shutdown, Windows began displaying the Blue Screen of Death (BSoD). I can't change the settings back as this occurs just before the option to boot into Safe mode appears. What can I do other than reinstall Windows? Julian Challenger A. Reinstalling Windows will resolve this problem, Julian. However, when you have a previously working system that will no longer boot into Safe mode, an alternative fix is to select 'Last known good configuration from the Windows Advanced Boot Options. If this menu isn't presented to you when the PC starts up, bring it up by pressing F8 as the system boots. If this doesn't work, try running Windows Startup Repair. Boot the PC from a retail Windows 7 installation or system repair disc if you have one. Alternatively, if your PC has a recovery partition, select 'System recovery options from Advanced Boot Options. Startup Repair will search your system for problems that may be preventing it from successfully booting up. Once the process is complete, click 'View diagnostic and repair details to see what it has done. EXTRA RAM NOT RECOGNISED Q. I have a two-year-old HP 550 laptop running Vista. I upgraded the 1GB of system memory to 4GB using two 2GB Crucial modules. Both the manufacturer and vendor stated that this was possible. Two BSoDs displayed the following error messages: 'Irql_not_less_or_equal and 'Pfn_list_corrupt. With just one 2GB module the laptop works fine, and I've checked that neither is faulty. I upgraded the chipset driver, but the only Bios update available on HP's site predated my purchase of the laptop. Please help. Ken Robinson A. HP's specification suggests the maximum memory capacity of 4GB may not apply to all laptops in the 500 series. Two different Intel mobile chipsets are used in this line-up: the Mobile Intel GLE960 Express, which supports Intel Celeron and Celeron M processors, and the Mobile Intel GME965 Express, which also supports Intel Core 2 Duo chips. Only the GME965 supports 4GB of RAM; the GLE960 is limited to 2GB of RAM. The memory appears to be working correctly in a 2GB configuration (check this by running Memtest, tinyurl.com slash 6f5txnr). However, we suspect you have a laptop that can't be upgraded beyond 2GB. GRAND PC DESIGNS Q. I want to build a Windows 7 64bit 'super-computer, but I don't know whether my chosen components will work together. I'd like to use an Intel Core i7-2600 processor, two 4GB Patriot Gamer 2 Series DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) RAM modules and an nVidia GeForce GT 220 graphics card. I have my eye on either an Asus P8P67 LE or Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4P motherboard, and have already selected a two-terabyte (2TB) Western Digital Caviar Green SATA-300 hard drive, a 10-speed Blu-ray drive and a 1,000W Rosewill PSU. Can you foresee any compatibility issues? Ayoob Elias. A. While we can't guarantee the compatibility of your chosen components without building the system ourselves, we can't see any obvious problems with the specification. However, we have a few suggestions. If you're using an Intel Core i7-2600 processor, the Gigabyte motherboard isn't suitable. Second-gen Core processors are supported only by Intel's Cougar Point chipsets, currently designated H61, H67, P67, Q67 and Z68. The Gigabyte's P55 chipset doesn't support your selected CPU. The Asus model will work fine, but the non-'LE version offers extra features and superior overclocking potential. Unless you're planning on overclocking the processor, the 1,000W PSU will be overkill. It will also increase energy consumption. A 600W or 750W model will be ample for your specification. And if you do plan to overclock, we recommend substituting the i7-2600 with an i7-2600K and considering an enhanced CPU cooler. CAMERA LENS COMPATIBILITY Q. I'd like to use a Nikon digital SLR telephoto lens with a Panasonic G10 Micro Four Thirds camera. Can I simply purchase a lens adaptor? June Spalding A. Without knowing the specific model of telephoto lens, it's not possible to say with certainty that it will be adaptable to the Micro Four Thirds format. However, the majority of Nikon SLR lenses can be used successfully with a suitable adaptor. You're unlikely to find comprehensive lists of which lenses work with which adaptors. Your best bet is to approach the manufacturer of the adaptor with your lens specifics or search online forums for someone who has tried the same combo. Among the Nikon lenses that aren't compatible are the G lenses, which have no aperture ring. The adapted lens will be

Dear Rambabuji, You may be aware that Government of Gujarat is denying appointment of blind persons as teachers for the Primary Schools. Despite this post being identified as reserved by the Ministry of Social Justice Empowerment for blind persons as per provisions of Sections 32 and 33 of PWD Act, 1995. It is truly unfortunate that Government of Gujarat should take such unjustified stand and deny right to employment as Primary Teachers to blind persons. I reuest all the members of forum to share the following information so that we may use the same as documentaly evidence; 1. Name of a blind person working as teacher in a Primary School 2. [AI] Fw: Youtube Downloader Problem
Hi friends, Sorry for reposting the same query for the third time. But I am still awaiting your kind attention on the following issue. So kindly do spare some of your time and definitely oblige with your expert suggestion. - Original Message - From: Dr. Yogesh Sharma Sent: Monday, April 09, 2012 4:47 AM Subject: Youtube Downloader Problem Hello friends, Wish you a pleasant summer! I am using Windows XP SP 3,Internet Explorer 8 and 80 GB hard disk. For the last some days, I have been facing a strange issue with Youtube Downloader 3.6. When I try to download a file, it starts downloading in the usual way, but after some time, the downloading fails, and I get a message saying: Such and such file 0 mb failed. (17), could not write to disk. Please check that you have enough space to download this file. When I check the properties of Drive C, I find that it has more than 1.25 GB of free space, whereas the size of the file is much smaller than that. But still I am not able to download the file and get the same message every time I start downloading through Youtube Downloader. Kindly oblige with your earliest expert guidance on this, since I am simply dying to download some real great stuff. With care and regards, Yogesh. Re: [AI] CCPD hearing
In my case initially IIM-K administration insisted for using 12th or 11th class student as scribe! Their argument was that an undergraduate who had read subjects like commerce will be able to assist visually impaired student. My argument was: how can school student explain me symbols and how can he write / draw such symbols notations on the answer sheet based on my verbal explanation? Moreover if exams of IIM-K are so easy that any undergraduate can write exam then what about the national repute of this institute? with regards Avneesh Singh On 13-04-2012 21:15, Prashant Ranjan Verma wrote: Dear Kartik, Was there any discussion on invigilation? I think the examining body should engage one invigilator for each visually impaired candidate who will keep an eye over the scribe and blind candidate to make sure that the scribe is not writing answers on his own. Even if some method of verifying certificates is established, the scribe can anyway help the candidate if he/she wants to. I think invigilation is the only answer and blind candidates should not be penalized in the fear of malpractice. Prashant -Original Message- From: young-vo...@googlegroups.com [mailto:young-vo...@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Kartik Sawhney Sent: 13 April 2012 18:22 To: young-vo...@googlegroups.com Cc: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: CCPD hearing Dear members, I wish to uprise all of you to yet another wonderful judgement passed by the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities. In this case, I had complained against the CBSE for non-provision of appropriate facilities for writing entrance examinations (All India Engineering/Architecture Entrance Examination). Actually, CBSE had laid down restrictive conditions regarding the eligibility of scribe, i.e. the scribe should be from Commerce/Humanities stream (without Mathematics). Of course, as is very much understandable that a scribe having no familiarity with Science will not even be able to read out the question properly, forget doing the rough work on my behalf. In this regard, IIT Delhi, CBSE-AIEEE Unit and Ministry of HRD were sent a notice for a hearing today. Representatives of IIT Delhi and CBSE attended the meeting. The following were the major decisions taken. 1. The Chairman, IIT-JEE 2012 stated that they were finding it difficult to implement the decisions that were taken, i.e. exempting the blind candidates from visual inputs. However, it was reinforced that the decision stands as it is, only the implementation will be further clarified in the next Joint Admission Board meeting slated to be held in August 2012. 2. It was clarified to him that the facility of extra time is applicable not only for subjective examinations, but also objective competitive examinations. Accordingly, he promissed to consider that too. 3. As regards scribe, it was pointed out that a scribe from Commerce/Humanities stream would not serve the purpose, and hence a scribe, one class lower than the stipulated eligibility for the examination, but of the same stream should be allowed. IIT pointed out that their rules provided for the institute to provide the blind or the physically disabled candidate with an appropriate scribe, and did not allow the candidate to bring his/her own scribe. However, I pointed out (siting other competitive examinations such as CLAT, CAT etc.) as to how externally provided scribes did not always work well for the blind candidates. However, he pointed out yet another apprhehension. He stated as to how at times, candidates misused this facility. He was concerned about the authenticity of the certificates submitted by the scribes which substantiated their eligibility for the exam. Nevertheless, he promissed to look into the matter, and this was duly noted in the judgement as well. 4. AIEEE agreed to follow the rules and norms laid down by the IIT Joint Admission Board. 5. These bodies have to notify the final procedure to the Office of the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities by September 2012. Friends, I was wondering if there is a way through which the authenticity of the certificates submitted by the scribe could be confirmed. Any suggestions? Any inputs will be highly appreciated, Regards, -Kartik Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] Map data for Ovi maps
hello what is the procedure to use ovi maps on our phone? On 4/14/2012 3:59 PM, Hozefa Tambawala wrote: Thanks very much Pranay for this great contribution. On 4/14/12, Srikanth Kanurisrili...@gmail.com wrote: do they work on Bel? On 4/14/12, Pranay Gadodiapranaygado...@gmail.com wrote: Hi all: As requested by few AI members, I downloaded the data for ovi maps day before using the map loader software in my computer. Pranay.
