Re: [AI] jaws help

2012-11-15 Thread Umesha Economics

dear Sunil,
one small correction, the capslock key does not work automatically as jaws
key in laptops. you have to configure it through jaws basics dialog.
what you said about jaws key is right. in addition: jaws key can be
configured to capslock, scrolllock, extended insert, numpad insert, or both
inserts through jaws configurations. then after, any key press involving
that key will be considered as jaws key + the other keys you press along
with. it is easier to change this assignment as per your hardware keypad
layout and comfort once for all key commands instead of changing each and
every key command assignment. that is why this difference. for a beginning
desktop user, jaws key and insert are one and the same.

yes,
the (insert) key and the (jaws key) is the same terms, jaws key
works with some other key combination that gives extra
functionality to the screen reader.
in desktops, the insert key works as the jaws key while in laptops
those dont has numaric keypad, the (caps lock) key works as jaws key.

Hi Rahul,

You can, in fact, draw tables and write formulae, irrespective of what
nature they are in some way or the other. Even if you feel that the
formula that you're trying to write cannot be produced on a computer
any how (which is indeed very rare), you can simply create a
convention for yourself, and put a note to that effect. I've been
using screen readers to take all my exams including Math. I do
understand that diagrams cannot be drawn on the computer. But, what
you can do is ask your writer to draw only the diagrams for you and
attach it to the hardcopy of your answersheet. This is what I propose
to do in my Board exams next year.

Regarding the scribe, I quite agree with Ajay.

These subjects require you to draw tables, graphs, write formulae in a

Do you think they will be willing to allow me to write theoretical

HI Rahul,

First of all, I suggest you contemplate using computer for writing the
exam. As you would be aware, Amar Jain from Mumbai has successfully
done it for law graduation.

coming to suggestions for a writer, I would prefer one who writes
correct spellings, even if the hand writing is not the best. I would
give my own example for this. I had just enough vision to write exams
till my post graduation. But I had one of the worst hand writings.
Yet I could score reasonably good marks. And with law being your
subject, you would have a few complicated spellings to dictate in
spite of the writers spelling knowledge. So, you wouldn't want to
dictate too many of them. Would you?

Hi all,

I hope you all are well and are having a wonderful Diwali.
As you might be aware, I am a law student and am currently in my
first

So, I'm having some trouble in deciding a writer for my first sem
exams.
There are 2 people amongst whom I have to choose.
One of them is a CA student and seems to be fairly okay, but her
handwriting isn't very clear.
The other person's handwriting is better, but she makes a lot of
spelling mistakes while writing and it's not feasible or possible for
me to dictate each and every tough spelling.

So, I would really like to hear what you all have to say about this
because many of you are far more experienced about these things than
I

am.
There's One more area where I require your valuable suggestions.
I have often noticed that writers sometimes do not write the exact
words that I tell them and sometimes write a similar-sounding word
without thinking that that word just doesn't fit into that sentence
or just scribble something illegible or miss some words altogether.
I do realise that it is only human and normal to make mistakes, but I
would still like to know your views about what I can do better to
reduce such mistakes.

Any other suggestions about time management while solving exams with
a

writer, etc would be deeply appreciated.

Rahul

Re: [AI] Complications with writers

2012-11-15 Thread Kartik Sawhney
Hi,

It actually depends what sort of formulae you want to write. For
instance, if I talk about the formulae that I deal with (in Physics,
Chemistry and Math), most of them can simply be written the same way
as any other text. Wherever I find that the formulae cannot be written
this way, I write it in an alternate manner and then, write a note
stating that the particular alternate symbol that I've used implies
the otherwise actual symbol.

For instance, consider this simplest illustration. Consider two finite
sets having four elements each. If I am to find the arithmetic mean of
the intersection of the two elements, I will simply write it as:

Let the two sets be A and B

To find the mean of the intersection of sets A and B

Let set C=A i B where i denotes intersection
Arithmetic mean=mean of elements in set C

Note that this usually works in most cases. I've also been able to
manage calculus (both differential and integral), vector algebra,
among other topics this way.

I'm sorry I'm not particularly sure of the content beyond class XII
Math and Science, and can't really give you a very detailed picture.
BTW, there are also software packages such as Latex etc. that can
enable you to achieve this.

I'm talking about the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), and
I will be taking the All India Senior School Certificate Examination
(AISSCE) (class XII Board Examinations) next year.

2012-11-15 Thread Pranav Lal
Dear all,

May I suggest you try to take practice tests on the computer? Try a term
exam or a class test. That should give you the confidence to do these exams
independently. You will not get the confidence to take exams independently
unless you take the plunge. If you have a home computer, try taking an exam
there with a timer. That is how I used to practice.

Before you ask, I have taken both kinds of exams; I started by using writers
and then switched to the computer when I was in b-school.

Missing words at times is human, but not substituting them with other words.
You should sternly deal with such commissions and better not take such scribes.
Generally, intelligent girls do not commit such mistakes.

Subject: [AI] Complications with writers

Hi all,

I hope you all are well and are having a wonderful Diwali.
As you might be aware, I am a law student and am currently in my first year.

So, I'm having some trouble in deciding a writer for my first sem exams.

So, I would really like to hear what you all have to say about this
because many of you are far more experienced about these things than I

Any other suggestions about time management while solving exams with a
writer, etc would be deeply appreciated.

Best,
Rahul

Re: [AI] Complications with writers

2012-11-15 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
I do not think writing note about one symbol implying another is a sound idea.
If you can write them with computer using some software you should write,
otherwise not.
I am not sure whether symbols of logic can be so written, though there must be
some way of reproducing them on computer.

And, friends, do not so despair of writers, there have been and are some nice
girls and guys who can write well and willingly so.

Regards,

The only reason why I am holding back as far as asking for permission

These subjects require you to draw tables, graphs, write formulae in a

Do you think they will be willing to allow me to write theoretical

2012-11-15 Thread Kartik Sawhney
Hello Sir,

Actually, the problem is that during public examinations (and also in
school examinations in my case), one is normally given a `scrubbed
laptop` simply having a word processor and nothing else. So, one
really can't use any software to reproduce symbols. Also, many of
these alternate ways of writing symbols that I am talking about are
approved by bodies that allow for the original symbols to be used. For
instance, in Organic Chemistry, there is branching in some molecules.
Since branching cannot be reproduced on a computer, the International
Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), which is mandated with
the responsibility of defining conventions and symbols, allows that
the group being branched being enclosed in parenthesis. Regarding
union, intersection and so forth, `u` is accepted generally. The only
concern that I sometimes have is what if the person checking the
answersheet does not read the note. But, I've not yet been able to
figure out a way to check this.

2012

Respected Sir,

Sub:     Right to equality for persons with disabilities - a proposal for
constitutional

Recognition - a humble submission for expeditious action-regarding:

We, on behalf of the Development and Welfare Association of the Blind (Andhra
Pradesh), in consultation with several other organisations and like-minded
individuals, hereby submit the following few lines for your kind enough
consideration and request you with humility to do the needful in the direction
of providing constitutional remedy to the historic injustice inflicted upon the
citizens with disabilities in our land of rich heritage and culture of
co-existence:

As his Excellency might be fully aware, nearly Three Crore Indians - 3% of our
population - are officially counted as people suffering from various
disabilities, visual-impairment, hearing-impairment and other locomotor
disabilities in particular. Ironically enough, a large proportion of this
population suffers gross negligence in the hands of our public institutions. It
is now estimated that nearly Fifteen Million visually-impaired and around
Sixty-four Million other disabled have been subjected to the cruelties of daily
life, and almost all of them are living without basic amenities such as food,
decent clothing, a shelter of their own and minimum education. At a time our
policy echelons are busy ensuring human rights for other marginalised groups,
SCs, STs and Women, here are the minuscule minority who live away in a shear
silence a life that falls below the standards any civilisation can ever think
of.

We hope his Excellency would agree with us in a candid admission that the
socio-economic backwardness of persons with disabilities in our country stems
from nowhere but our own constitution that fails to make any meaningful
provision for the rights of this scattered community. While Articles 14, 15 and
16 of the Constitution took extra-care to ensure the right of equality for all
citizens in India, with enough safeguards for such marginalised sections as
SCs, STs and OBCs through affirmative policy in education and employment,
persons with disabilities have been conveniently forsaken in this thwarted war
of vote-bank politics. Look at, for example, the speed with which Governments
in the recent past have moved swiftly and brought about 27% reservation for
OBCs in education and employment through the constitutional Amendment, and the
same swiftness that can be seen in the present regime's attempt to provide 33%
reservation for women through another
Constitutional Amendment. Persons with disabilities at times really feel let
down in the present political climate where every community with a sizeable
Vote-bank and social capital is frequently showered with all policy
concessions, whereas, persons with disabilities, who are a scattered minority
at best (with very little advantage for commanding vote-bank manoeuvring in a
given place), are never taken seriously by our majoritarian democracy.
Consequently, the real concerns of this

Re: [AI] Bala bolka query

2012-11-15 Thread mukesh jain
hello,
initially, by default the voices are set to 50% rate both for pitch
and speed. so you have to modify the said rate as per the choice best
suit you.

to test these voices i simply create one small document and then have
it red with balabolka voices and select the rate wich catches my
attraction.

to check whether any particular voice has been installed on my
machine, i have one free tool called text to speech program wich let
you know the voices output so that you can be sured about its
installation.

thanks,
mukesh.

Hi Kartik,

As regards the note, try making it visually different from the rest of the
text. Put it in a different font or, bold the text.

yes, you need to install the additional voices separately if its not
the part of the balabolka as i don't know what version of balabolka
you are using.

i will surely look for the link for merry and post the same as i have
downloaded long ago and have to pull out this link from my favorites
on my laptop.
thanks,
mukesh.
