[AI] Information about accessible crossword puzzles

2013-01-13 Thread payal
Hi,

As the subject says, I'm looking for sites where the crosswords are
accessible and can be played either online or downloaded and then played.
The sighted folk have many options, but do we? I have not tried working on
any of those. Apparently dictionary.com offers some but I couldn't manage
it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Payal

Re: [AI] Information about accessible crossword puzzles

2013-01-13 Thread Geetha Shamanna
Hi Payal,

The Spoonbill software site has a dedicated crossword page for blind gamers.
Visit
http://www.omninet.net.au/~irhumph/crosswords.htm
This page has links to several downloadable British-style cryptic crosswords
suitable for use with BG Crossword puzzle 1.0. Here is how BG Crossword
Puzzle works:
BG Crossword Puzzle 1.0 allows vision impaired and blind players to solve
Crossword puzzles downloaded from the Internet. As with all Spoonbill
Software's Blind Gamers games, it is self-voicing, obviating the need to use
your screen reader. For the benefit of vision-impaired players, the
crossword is presented in the normal crossword grid format. In addition, the
answer words and the clues are displayed in two lists which can be navigated
using the arrow keys on your keyboard. This pair of lists can be maximized
to fit your screen allowing the words to be more easily read.
Blind players also use the arrow keys to move up and down the list of words
and clues and can use the W key to speak the current word, or the C key to
speak the current clue. By default the across words and clues are presented
first. You can switch to a display of the down clues by hitting the D key on
your keyboard, and back to the across clues by hitting the A key.
There are many helpful features to make solving crosswords a pleasant
experience. May we suggest that you follow the Tutorial when first starting
up the program?

Here is how to order BG Crossword Puzzle 1.0:
When ordering games in the Blind Gamers series from Spoonbill Software, it
is important that you include the full name of each game you want to order.
For instance BG Cribbage 2.1. The BG in front of the game name indicates
that you want the blind accessible version of the game.
Send your request to Ian Humphreys, together with your full name and country
of residence to:
ga...@spoonbillsoftware.com.au
For example: My name is Karen Black from Ontario, Canada, please send the
following games...
If you want to order more than one game at a time, please include a list of
the games you would like in a single e-mail, rather than send a separate
e-mail for each game request.
IMPORTANT: Please allow up to four days for delivery. I only process orders
about twice a week to better manage my time and allow more time to develop
new games.

Hope this helps.
Geetha

Re: [AI] A site for bringing vi job seekers and employers together!

2013-01-13 Thread George Abraham
Agreed entirely. However, I would appreciate the efforts put in by the
people who are trying to organise jobs/opportunities for the VI.

My take is that the quality of education opportunities available for the VI
are the pits. Focus has to be on getting more quality VI job aspirants
into the job market. Our blind schools have to raise the bar. Maths and
science has to be taught. Expectations from our blind youth has to be
raised and greater discipline has to come in. Jobs will come ideally only
when we are worthy of them. People will start thinking differently only
when we get them to begin thinking differently.

Best,

Dear all,

I agree that a few such initiatives are being taken by people at different
levels. But the existing harsh reality is that most employers are not
willing to hire people with vision impairments and this is what I hear
every time from both individuals and organisations working in the area of
disability. This scenario is very true particularly in a city like Chennai
where the level of awareness about visual disability is very low. Please
note that I am not against anyone or any efforts made in the direction of
enhancing the job opportunities for the vision impaired segment. My only
question is that how much of these efforts produce fruitful results for
this group.

We must also take steps to make the employers strictly follow the
accessibility guidelines while designing their in-house software packages
because this will have a direct baring on the performance of a VI candidate
and if this not done so, the candidate's may not have a strong career in the

Hi Amar,

Many thanks for your feedback. Have you reported these issues to someone at
Microsoft or to your screen reader's manufacturer?

Hi Syed,

I will not argue the fact that accessibility guidelines help but if the
blind person kknows his technology, he can get around many barriers. Blind
people have to go beyond the basics of using their screen readers.

To add to what Pranav has said, my experience is that these issues can be
sorted out once we are on-boarded. Having said that, our first focus needs to
be improving quality of education and create more talented aspirants.

Re: [AI] Information about commercially available IAS Audio Notes

2013-01-13 Thread Mitra Jyothi
Hello Friends,
Yes, it is the same person Mr. Prakash Adnore. In fact, it is through
Habeeb's reference only, that he visited us.
The mp3 player is accessible by touch, but the audio files are there in
multiple folders, subject wise. The player does not have the feature to
announce the folder names. We'll just have to play it and find out which
file it is.
We can't add our own content, as there is no possibility of an external
memory card. The mp3 player is a small and simple A Tek mp3 player.
For more details about the player, catalogue of the topics included and
also some free video links, they have a website
http://civilservicesaudionotes.com/

We will keep you updated on the developments.

Thanks Regards,

Subject: [AI] Information about commercially available IAS Audio Notes

  Hello members,
We have come across a person who has prepared IAS Audio notes in MP3
player. It has more than 50 hours of notes for IAS, State Civil Services
and All India Competitive Exams (prelims and main). It includes General
Studies subjects on India and English paper Essays.
We have checked it and the recording quality is professional (prepared
 by
radio/ T V artists) and content has been prepared by a team of Senior
  Civil
Service Officers and Management Experts. Additionally, they will provide
more than 2 hours of Updates every month.
It has been packaged for commercial sale at 3150 rupees, along with the
  mp3
player. The memory card has been sealed and locked inside the player, so
  it
  can't be copied.
If there is a requirement from our community, we can try to negotiate
  with
  the person.
Those who are interested can write back to us offline.

  Thanks Regards,
