Dr Bodhankar elected president of Commonwealth Association for Health and
Disability
Jan 30, 2013, 06.09AM IST TNN
NAGPUR: Well known city paediatrician Dr Uday Bodhankar has been elected as
president of the Commonwealth Association for Health and Disability (COMHAD)
that has 54 member nations. He says his focus during three year tenure would be
on improving facilities and public utilities for disabled population in the
country.

Bodhankar has been associated with COMHAD for 25 years and served as its
secretary general for last four years up to December 2012. He is the first
Indian to head the organization. COMHAD is an official collaborator of World
Health Organization and is actively involved in promoting health development,
exchange of technical expertise and inter-country training and education in
health in Commonwealth countries.

Dr MS Akbar, a Bangladeshi MP who was the president for the last term, was able
to bring down infant and maternal mortality rate in his country to the level of
any developed country. "His strategy was to introduce rigorous vaccination
drives for kids that included polio and pentavalent vaccines. He also promoted
breastfeeding and safe motherhood practices," he said.

"Though we have a large population of the disabled, no public place is
disabled-friendly. I hope to work in this direction, starting with our city and
gradually extending these changes elsewhere," said Dr Bodhankar. The government
may have several schemes for people with disability, but there is no awareness
of these among people, he added. "Disability becomes even more unbearable,
especially kids from poor backgrounds who are at times forced to beg on
streets. We aim to make things better for such kids," he added.

With thanks and regards

yesterday night, when I red this news I couldn’t believe as to which
abdul this news refered to. Because, this is really out of the
imagination. I could not gather the words to offer my deep condolence
for this untimingly demise of such a young, inspiring, energetic
person. Then I thought might be some other person who may not have
written any mails to access india since long and may be he is the
senior member than myself to access india. But when I saw the other
person’s replies refering to same abdul who studied in symbiosis and
recently been recruited by vipro, I really got shocked.

I have personally listened to his presentation at access india
convention and was witnessed to his smiling, cherished communication
skills and also his firm ideas on the topics of accessibility. When I
written few of mails regarding my distance studies through symbiosis
centre of distance learning and its problems on access india, he was
the person to make sure to answer my all difficulties and give
solutions to it. Also when I personally communicated with him via
email and expressed my difficulties in accounting subjects as I have
graduated from arts stream, his inspiration to teach me accounting was
very unique and assured me to contact him anytime as and when I have
any doubts. His way of inspiring the new comers was very encouraging.
Yet can not believe of this shocking news and I feel that he has left
behind so many questions amongst us to face the challenges in our life
with courage, confidence and devotion. He has set the example of doing
the right things at every moment without wasting any single secand as
life is too short.

I pray to god that his soul remain in peace and I give my deep
condolence to departed soul. May god give enough strength to come out
from this irrepairable loss to his family members.

[AI] A most unusual swayamvaram

2013-01-29 Thread JAYINFOTECH
A most unusual swayamvaram

On Sunday, a swayamvaram of the kind we have only heard of in ancient India
took place at a college hall in Tamil Nadu.

The participants were an unusual group of people. A Ganesh Nadar was present
at the heart-warming occasion.

Sswayamvaram is well entrenched in our ancient texts. There is the famous
one in the Ramayana, where Sita chooses her life partner, and in that other
venerable text, the Mahabharata, Draupadi gets to do the same.

Many centuries later, Prithviraj Chauhan gallops off with Sanyogita from her
swayamvaram in dashing style.

Recently, a most unusual organisation used this practice of choosing a
future life partner for its members. The Leucoderma Awareness Movement in
Chennai is founded by K Umapathy and now has 100,000 members.

According to Umapathy, who suffers from the condition himself, marriage is a
hurdle people like him face. Thus the decision to hold a swayamvaram for the
movement's members.

When he first announced the event, 500 people registered. He had to prune
the list down to 100 and then to 40 as funds and space was limited.

A condition where the pigmentation of the skin is affected, leaving
unsightly blotches on the face and other parts of the body, leucoderma is
unfortunately a visible condition and people who have it are unnecessarily
stigmatised or pitied.

The condition affects two per cent of the world's population. In India, the
figure is double, at four per cent of the nation's population -- Tamil Nadu
alone has 3.6 million leucoderma-affected people.

LAM does not accept donations in cash. So for this swayamvaram at the
National College hall in Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu, someone provided the food,
someone else provided the water, one person paid the subsidised rent and
T-shirts provided by the Life Insurance Corporation.

"Don't worry, everyone will get a chance. There will be a swayamvaram in
every district every three months," Umapathy assured the gathering.

At the 94-year-old college's large air-conditioned hall, 52 boys from the
National Service Scheme wearing T-shirts that read 'Leucoderma is not a
disease, heredity or contagious' had volunteered their services, together
with students from the Bishop College, Tiruchi.

There was an air of festivity as befits a swayamvaram. Parents, siblings,
nephews, nieces, all dressed in their colourful best, accompanied the
spouse-seekers.

Jyotsna got the event off to a good start with a Bharata Natyam performance,
followed by a boy who danced to the latest sensation 'Gangnam Style'.

The participants were then brought on stage and each one's age,
qualification, job, and salary was announced. Also mentioned, for reasons
unknown, was their blood group, height and weight.

Divya told us how she stopped going to church because people kept staring at
her. She has also stopped taking medicines. "It stops when I take the
medicine and starts the minute I stop. So what's the point?" she said of the
patches that signal this condition.

What do you want in your life partner? It's the question everyone asks.

The common answer was, "I want an understanding partner." The desire to be
understood was universal and endearing, from people who get little
understanding from a world that shuns anything different.

There were other, more familiar, demands too. One person wanted to marry
only a vegetarian, another said he was looking out for a widow.

And then there was a 43-year-old man who did not have leucoderma, but wanted
to marry someone who did. "I also have a shortcoming," he explained. "I
cannot see beyond 30 metres and I cannot read without glasses."

But there was one condition: She had to be a Brahmin; his parents wouldn't
accept anyone else, he said. Casteism was alive and kicking here too, it
seems.

There was the very moving explanation from a woman about why she was
present: "I am 31. I had an elder brother who registered my name for this
event. He had vowed that he would marry only after I was married. Twenty-one
days ago he died in an accident. The only reason I came here was because he
registered my name.

To prove that children of parents who have leucoderma do not get it,
Umapathy brought his children onto the stage. "I have leucoderma, but my
kids are fine," he announced.

Most of the participants were well educated and had good jobs. They were
teachers, professors, engineers; one was the general manager at a bank.
Salaries ranged from Rs 10,000 to Rs 40,000 a month.

Most of the men were over 30, but most of the girls were in their 20s.

Umapathy related a sad fact, "When this happens before marriage, it becomes
a problem. After marriage, when it afflicts the man, nothing happens. The
wife accepts it. But when the wife gets it, the husband ill-treats her. He
uses that as an excuse to have extra-marital affairs or even another
marriage."

The cruel reality of sexual inequality enacted here too. After everyone was
introduced on stage the participants mingled. Lunch and tea was served,
there was a

I have spoken with Abdul on many occasions. He often had intelligent and
unique queries, answers to which he sought with straight forward curiosity.
Always proactive and enthusiastic, his vision went beyond himself. A mind
always working at solving problems and seeking solutions, his death has
indeed robbed us of a source of energy and vision.

I deeply condole his death personally and hope his family find the strength

I met Abdul for the first time when he was a shy teenager at NAB Jamshedpur.
The next time I heard from him was when he was giving the Symbiosis entrance
exams from Bhubhaneshwar and needed help with the writer guidelines.
After getting into a BBA programme Abdul wanted to make his teachers
understand accessibility.

Then it was the enthusiastic Abdul inspiring his college mates and making a
great presentation at the Accessindia Convention in Ahmedabad 2008.
In 2011 I saw him as a courteous host at his hotel in Jamshedpur and a great
volunteer amd motivator to the kids at NAB Jamshedpur.
Last month I heard from Atul Sahay about his placement with Wipro and was so
proud to see the transformation.
Abdul was always shy, soft spoken, enthusiastic, helpful and had a yearning
to do something for his visually challenged community.
I can at this point only bow my head in grief and tears.
We did lose someone who mattered.

Yes, indeed shocking news. Like Kanchan and George mentioned, undoubtedly,
he was an unique person and who was always forefront to take initiatives.
We lost a great inspiration... May his soul rest in peace.

I am really shocked after reading this. Will miss my young and helping
friend a lot. When I lost my vision he was one of them who helped me
in overcoming that tromma. May his soul rest in peace. Some buddy

Re: [AI] Our own access india's friend Abdul Razique Khan passed away this morning.

2013-01-29 Thread Chetan Sharma
A Jamshedpur-based visually challenged youth is busy “opening the
eyes” of the people of Pune so that those who are disabled like him
can get a better life.

Meet 23-year-old Abdul Razique Khan, a resident of Dhatkidih,
Jamshedpur, whose efforts to make a difference in the lives of
visually and physically challenged people and also the underprivileged
in Pune, where he is pursuing MBA, have been greatly appreciated by
one and all.

Abdul’s own story is one of arduous struggle — being a victim of
Marfan syndrome, he completely lost his eyesight in 2003 despite
prolonged treatment and several surgeries. But that did not stop him
from continuing a normal life as he went on to complete Plus Two from
DBMS English School (2007) and then pursued BBA from Symbiosis Centre
for Management Studies (2011) followed by MBA from Symbiosis Institute
of Business Management — both in Pune.

Along with studies, he also carries out social projects for the needy
and disabled. In fact, it was under his leadership that a funding
programme for underprivileged children was introduced during his stint
at Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies.

“I was made the head of the institute’s social club, Initiate, in
2010. I organised fund raising programmes for providing education to
underprivileged kids for two years. After I passed out last year, the
juniors took up the project,” said Abdul, who has come to his hometown
for a two-month summer internship with Tata Sons as part of his MBA
curriculum.

The youth’s stint at Tata Motors, where he was posted, ended on
Wednesday. He will go back to Pune on June 19.

The 23-year-old’s social work did not end once he left Symbiosis
Centre for Management Studies. In fact, he is credited with initiating
a campaign in Pune for providing access to visually challenged
children in educational and other prominent institutions.

“The campaign called Open Your Eyes was appreciated not only by those
in Symbiosis, but also by the people of Pune. As part of it, we
conducted accessibility study for the disabled at government and
public educational institutions and urged the authorities to admit the
differently abled under the Persons With Disability Act,” said Abdul.

He also started a forum, where visually challenged achievers can
interact with the parents of others of their ilk. “The idea is to get
inspiration and encouragement from those who have surmounted all odds
to succeed in life,” said Abdul, who took help of writers to appear
for examinations and uses screen reading software on his laptop.

He has also picked up the basics of braille at National Association of
Blind, Jamshedpur.

Currently, Abdul is working on a project for Mumbai-based organisation
Retina India, which aims at empowering the visually challenged through
a social platform. “I cannot divulge much about the project, but it
will certainly make life easy for people like me, irrespective of

NAB Bangalore for some training. We'll always remember and cherish that day.
I think he was using HP Compaq Presario V3500, with Nokia 6600 for GPRS

Re: [AI] Our own access india's friend Abdul Razique Khan passed away this morning.

2013-01-29 Thread George Abraham
This is indeed shocking! I knew Abdul personally. He was one of the most
positive human-beings I have known. I first interacted with him when he had
called the Eyeway helpdesk asking if he as a blind person can do an MBA and
if so how. I then had visited him at Pune where he was doing his BBA. He
had introduced me to the Head of his institution. He also along with Tausif
shared with me a film they had made for a project they did on inclusion. I
still have the film with me. Abdul was a dynamic person. He did not wait
for the World to include him, he took the initiative. I personally feel the
loss. We have not only lost a friend but an inspiration.

I met Abdul for the first time when he was a shy teenager at NAB
Jamshedpur.
The next time I heard from him was when he was giving the Symbiosis
entrance exams from Bhubhaneshwar and needed help with the writer
guidelines.
After getting into a BBA programme Abdul wanted to make his teachers
understand accessibility.

Then it was the enthusiastic Abdul inspiring his college mates and making a
great presentation at the Accessindia Convention in Ahmedabad 2008.
In 2011 I saw him as a courteous host at his hotel in Jamshedpur and a
great volunteer amd motivator to the kids at NAB Jamshedpur.
Last month I heard from Atul Sahay about his placement with Wipro and was
so proud to see the transformation.
Abdul was always shy, soft spoken, enthusiastic, helpful and had a yearning
to do something for his visually challenged community.
I can at this point only bow my head in grief and tears.
We did lose someone who mattered.

[AI] Another talking microwave oven

2013-01-29 Thread Prashant Ranjan Verma
Dear all,

I got the Sansung CE117ADV-B 32 litre microwave.

It has microwave, grill and oven and is the top of the line product from
Samsung.

It has voice guide which I found to be very useful for the visually
impaired.

I think it is as accessible as the earlier specially designed Cook Magic
microwave from the USA. The only things it does not announce are the time
and power increments. But since the dial rotates in steps it is not to
difficult to set the time or power level even for a visually impaired.

It is currently selling at Rs. 16750 but availability is limited.

So, if you are planning to purchase an accessible microwave then I suggest
you go for this now. it was out of stock on Croma and flipkart. I ordered it
from snapdeal.com.

Thanks,

Prashant

Dear all,

Having followed the ongoing discussion on this topic so far, I would
like to add that the idea of having Braille stickers in trains as
initiated by the Indian Railways would not serve the purpose for the
vision impaired community and would only cause a lot of hassle in
running from one direction to another. Besides,The audio announcement
of the coach numbers is a simple and a easy solution for all. We must
provide our recommendations in this to the concerned authorities as
early as possible.

Sultana

Leprosy-cured Indians don't find jobs easily

India has 13 million people who have been cured of leprosy, but they still find
it hard to get a job due to the stigma attached to the disease. This, despite
the government making provisions for their employment, health experts and
activists say.

According to the experts, people cured of leprosy are covered under the
Disability Act and get one percent reservation in government jobs. In spite of
this, the majority of those cured are unable to benefit.

"Stigma is the major cause for such people not being able to benefit," Rajive
Raturi, who heads the Disability Rights Initiative (DRI) of Human Rights Law
Network, a nationwide collective of lawyers and social workers, told us.

He said when a person who has been cured of leprosy applies for a government
job, he has to produce the medical certificate. But their candidature gets
rejected when it is found that they suffered from leprosy.

"They are often rejected due to the fact that as soon as the doctors or any
person concerned sees leprosy as the cause of the disability, they ignore the
applicants," Raturi said, adding most of the people are thus forced to beg on
the streets or at religious places.

Another activist said that such people are already in such a precarious
condition that they don't know where to go for redressal.

According to Vinita Shanker, executive director, Sasakawa India Leprosy
Foundation, there needs to be a special category for former leprosy patients as
they have more health-related issues like recurrent joint pains and vision
problems after their cure.

"In India, under the Disability Act, leprosy-cured persons are categorised as
those with loco-motor disability. This is a deterrence as visual disability is
a major fallout of the disease," Shanker told us. The charitable trust was set
up by Yohei Sasakawa, chairman of the Nippon Foundation, in 2006.

According to Shanker, Sasakawa devoted all his professional life fighting
leprosy not only in Japan but all over the world.

"We have to fight stigma from society and change mindsets. These people are as
capable of working as any healthy person," Shanker said.

In order to correct this anomaly, a group of NGOs working in this field had
petitioned parliament in 2008 seeking amendment in certain laws, including the
Disability Act, which they consider as discriminatory against people cured of
leprosy.

According to P.K. Gopal, president of the International Association for
Integration, Dignity and Economic Advancement (IDEA), India, which is supposed
to have eliminated leprosy seven years ago, still records the highest number of
fresh cases globally.

Leprosy is a chronic disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae and
Mycobacterium lepromatosis. It is primarily a disease of the skin and nerves.
Skin lesions are the primary external sign. Left untreated, leprosy can be
progressive, causing permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs and eyes.

According to the World Health Organisation, 65 per cent of all new cases of
leprosy globally are from India.

The union health ministry's latest data shows that between April, 2010, and
March, 2011, India recorded 126,800 fresh cases of leprosy of which 12, 463
were children under the age of 15. Around 4,000 of these patients had
disabilities due to leprosy. Last year, 127,000 new cases were detected in
India.

India currently has about 54 percent of all the new leprosy cases in the world,
followed by Brazil with about 17 percent, then Indonesia with about seven
percent.

"Despite the fact that 13 million people have been cured so far, people still
attach a stigma to it," Gopal, who himself is leprosy-cured, told us.

The petition made to parliament included certain other discriminatory laws like
the Hindu, Muslim and Christian Marriage Acts which give a right of divorce to
a person whose spouse has leprosy.

Among other countries reporting more than 1,000 new cases in 2006 are Angola,
Bangladesh, China, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Myanmar,
Nepal, Nigeria, The Philippines, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.

It is estimated that probably at least three million people are living with
some permanent disability due to leprosy, although the exact figure is not
available.

Gopal said the government has to do something, like providing them vocational
training, to stop these people from returning to begging.

"They are needed to be treated equally and should not be subjected to
discrimination. Government should come out with some training programmes for
them so that they stop begging," Gopal added.
